SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. See Selected Works in the Exhibition to preview some of these important gifts.

SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

SUMMARY:Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asia Society’s seventieth anniversary\, Asia Society Museum presents Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Celebrating 70 Years of Asia Society and the Rockefeller Legacy. \nDisplaying seventy of the finest examples of Asian art in the United States drawn from Asia Society’s permanent collection\, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of bronzes\, ceramics\, and metalwork thoughtfully assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s by John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906-1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909-1992). John D. Rockefeller 3rd founded Asia Society in 1956 with the mission to promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States; the bequest of the collection to Asia Society in 1979 underscores the Rockefellers’ conviction that an aesthetic encounter with great works of art promotes deep cross-cultural understanding. \nWith highlights including spectacular Buddhist and Hindu sculptures\, and rare Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese ceramics\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon celebrates historic achievements in Asian art spanning more than two millennia. The exhibition foregrounds the transformative power of faith and the catalyzing potential of international trade in the creation of great works of art across Asia. \nBuddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon presents a special opportunity for museum visitors to experience the unparalleled quality of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Thrid Collection at its home at Asia Society Museum in New York City.

SUMMARY:Shu Lea Cheang\, LOVER LOVE
DESCRIPTION:LOVER LOVE\, a new commission for the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art by Shu Lea Cheang\, begins with a portal. A window is flung open and the gray wall of an apartment block dissolves into a turbulent\, overcast sky\, against which a smoky being is enveloped by a six-winged seraphim—an angel of the highest order. \nThis opening transition is both a gesture to Cheang’s longtime collaborator\, musician Aérea Negrot (1980–2023)\, who died by suicide\, and a marker of an entry into a hybrid space of documentation and imagination. For this film\, presented as a four-channel installation\, Cheang worked with eight intergenerational performers in Tucson\, Arizona\, all of whom contributed their own experiences\, narratives\, and dreams of and for trans and gender nonconforming life in today’s United States. \nThis collaboratively scripted film moves between physical and virtual space: between performances in a motel room\, a junkyard\, and city streets amid surrounding nature\, we can see desert plants blooming anthropomorphic appendages and souls escaping inhuman oppression to take transhuman flight. \nThe gallery’s four screens\, themselves portals to the film’s world\, can be shifted by viewers into and out of the path of each projector. Each movement triggers a segment of Negrot’s 2011 track “It’s Lover\, Love”—a dreamy\, minimalist meditation on the lingering traces of broken promises and vanished love. These aural and physical shifts create new compositions\, morphing the installation into an active landscape in which to navigate agency\, survival\, and intimacy in a time of escalating political precarity.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Siyan Wong: Make It 10 Cents
DESCRIPTION:Make it 10 Cents is a painting exhibition to raise awareness and to support a one-day pop-up redemption on May 26th in Chinatown. This pop-up simulates the passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill by redeeming all materials at the 10-cent rate. \nSiyan Wong’s paintings depict elderly low wage workers who collect cans to survive. Each of her social realist paintings\, in vibrant colors\, captures a fleeting moment that exudes the human experience of living – depicting lives whose efflorescence is held back by the politics of their days. Together\, they show the human spirit always venturing toward a better life. \nThrough these paintings\, she gives visibility to the work of the historically marginalized\, and puts a spotlight on the cans and bottles that end up in costly landfills that devastate our environment. The individuals appearing in her paintings are elderly Chinese immigrants in Chinatown and the Lower East Side who worked in garment factories\, restaurants\, and homecare before turning to rummaging for cans and bottles on the streets. \nWong states that\, “Art is only as powerful as the inspiration for actions that comes from it. ‘Make It 10 Cents’ is an art exhibition about doing right by our vulnerable population of elderly and working poor\, and to protect our environment that is experiencing rapid\, severe degradation driven in part by failure in policies.” \nLocation: Welcome to Chinatown\nRegular Hours: Monday to Friday: 10:00AM – 6:00PM\nDuration: April 14 – May 29\, 2026

SUMMARY:Theater: Indian Princesses (with Discount on May 17)
DESCRIPTION:Access $25 tickets Use Disount Code: JAANY for May 17 at 7pn show. \nIndian Princesses\nby Eliana Theologides Rodriguez\ndirected by Miranda Cornell \nn the summer of 2008\, five young girls of color and their white fathers attend a program designed to bond families through handmade activities\, camp-like adventures\, and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation. But where can these girls turn when the program sparks questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? Inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name\, Indian Princesses is a tender satire that explores the stories we tell\, the histories we omit\, and the truths that live inside us\, waiting to come out.

SUMMARY:Bangladesh Not "Bhaangadesh"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and beyond took actions during the 2024 mass uprisings against the quota system in place\, since 1972\, immediately after the birth of the country in 1971. Featuring articles such as printed international artworks by Bangladeshi artists\, handcrafted tools\, and relevant media\, the exhibition serves as a homage to learn\, reflect\, discuss\, and heal. \nBangladesh\, Not “Bhaangadesh” seeks to raise social (in)justice awareness through showcasing Bangladeshi artistic expression\, and persistent crimes against humanity from the summer of 2024–of government-implemented curfews\, with “shoot-on-sight” commands\, country-wide internet revoked\, houses raids\, innocent lives taken\, and unnecessary arrests made\, etc. After decades of corruption and nepotism\, Bangladeshi students stood up against the unjust quota system of prioritizing government positions rather than basing hiring on skill\, talent\, and merit–for descendants of ancestors prominent in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ed Young’s Bright Worlds
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, Ed Young (1931–2023) invigorated the world of children’s books through intimate storytelling\, inventive artistry\, and potent emotionality. This first U.S. retrospective features original artwork from 15 of his most significant projects—focusing on works drawn from his personal story and Chinese folktales—alongside a selection of his sketchbooks\, family photos\, and personal effects. \nYoung achieved distinction as a beloved storyteller and illustrator who challenged younger audiences with pictorial and moral complexity. He was a towering figure in children’s literature\, reaching wide audiences while earning the field’s top honors. His retelling of the Chinese “Little Red Riding Hood\,” Lon Po Po\, introduced generations of children to Chinese folklore and won the Caldecott Medal; he also received two Caldecott Honors for earlier works. Across his career\, he garnered numerous accolades\, including multiple selections for The New York Times’ “10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books” list. \nThe exhibition traces Young’s family life in Shanghai\, where he was the fourth youngest of five children. As a teenager\, he and his brother were sent to live in Hong Kong to flee the civil war in China. He immigrated to America for college\, eventually earning an art degree from the ArtCenter School in Los Angeles\, and then moved to New York. “I set out with $20 borrowed money in my pocket to bet my life in New York City\,” he wrote. After being laid off from an advertising studio\, he submitted sketches to children’s book publisher Ursula Nordstrom\, who hired him to illustrate The Mean Mouse and Other Mean Stories (1962)\, launching a career that would span over 100 books. \nHis most memorable projects were deeply personal. Ed Young’s Bright Worlds guides viewers through key moments of his life and oeuvre with original artwork from The House Baba Built (2011)\, about his childhood in Japan-occupied Shanghai; Voices of the Heart (1997)\, exploring Chinese culture through the relationship between writing\, image and his lifelong tai chi practice; My Mei Mei (2006)\, on adopting his daughters; and Bright World (2024)\, a book published posthumously in China\, meditating on the cyclical nature of life. \n“So many of us grew up on Ed Young’s art and storytelling\,” said Herb Tam\, MOCA’s Chief Curator. “This exhibition will reveal what went into crafting masterworks of the children’s book form. Visitors will be enchanted by his fluent handling of media—from pastel and cut paper to pen\, ink\, and collage—and inspired by his story as a resourceful immigrant striving to make his mark in a creative field.” \n“As a father of three\, I’ve seen firsthand how children’s books shape the way we see the world\,” said Michael Lee\, MOCA’s President. “The imagery and storytelling stay with us—they become part of our family conversations\, our imaginations\, and even the way we share stories later in life. It’s a special honor to explore the life and mind of Ed Young\, whose work has inspired generations. Through this exhibition\, we not only celebrate his extraordinary achievements but also revisit how deeply his art was shaped by his journey as a Chinese American—reflecting his early life in China and the graceful balance he found as a lifelong practitioner of tai chi.” \nEd Young’s Bright Worlds is part of MOCA’s Luminaries for America250\, a yearlong celebration of Chinese American historymakers at the Semiquincentennial. SUMMARY:Book: Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth will create a space dedicated to illuminating\, unpacking\, and strengthening understandings of cross-racial feminist connections as a tool for environmental and food justice. You will explore hands-on practices and healing modalities\, from gardening and composting to mutual aid and herbalism\, with contributors of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books\, 2025) and other practitioners in these spaces in order to facilitate deeper engagement within these intersections. The program will include a reading from the book\, panel discussion\, and nature walk. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSpeakers include:\nRosa Bordallo is a farmer advocate\, musician\, and native of Guåhan in the Mariånas. She currently resides in upstate NY on unceded land of the Oneida and Kanienʼkehá꞉ka peoples. Rosa credits her Chamorro upbringing for her commitment to political and cultural agitation and to Indigenous sovereignty and decolonial futures. Her essay\, “The Breadfruit Does Not Fall Far from the Tree” appears in the anthology\, We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books). She has released several albums and EPs as a solo artist and previously wrote and performed music as her alter ego\, Manett. \nEman Rashid is a Palestinian-American educator who teaches about Native American and endangered plants and wildlife. She’s also a media consultant with 10+ years in press rooms. A West Bank Native\, Eman now organizes across the nation for Palestinian dignity through Indigenous land stewardship\, education and activism across generations. \nTaylor Rae of Raeflower Holistics is an herbalist\, archivist\, and clayworker who is passionate about rekindling the land relationships of herself and her communities. After earning a B.A in Environmental Science from Northwestern University with a research concentration in pollination biology\, Taylor craved connection with land that cracked open the restrictive parameters set by western academia and offered space for reciprocity\, remembering\, and collaboration. Through her land practices\, Taylor aims to tell the stories of her lineage\, create safety in holistic care spaces\, combat the oppressive structures\, and support community in finding respite in the land once again. \nPista (any pronouns) is a queer South Asian herbalist\, educator and organizer currently based on occupied Lenapehoking land in so-called Queens\, NY. After many years of working in the tech industry\, Pista began composting at the start of the pandemic to re-center mutuality & living connections. Pista works now to compost systems\, beliefs & ideas that no longer serve communities in order to rebirth futures of greater reciprocity and care through connecting ancestral Earthwork with abolition. \nThis event is hosted by late-bloomer.info\, a community gardener\, cultural organizer\, and co-editor of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation. There will be a limited number of copies of the anthology available for sliding scale donation ($10-25 suggested). \nAccessibility Notes:\nThis event is being held at an outdoor community space with uneven grounds that are not easily traversable with wheelchairs or other walking devices. There no on-site bathroom\, and the nearest publicly accessible restroom is at a grocery store on the corner. Please plan accordingly and practice recommended public health measures including masking (especially those with respiratory or immune issues)\, testing negative pre-event\, and staying home if you feel unwell or have symptoms. \nThis project is a part of the What Can We Do? artist grant program\, presented by Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Special thanks to Council Members Christopher Marte and Sandra Ung. Programs serving cross-cultural solidarity and the Palestinian community are funded through a grant from the Ford Foundation for Social Justice. \n\n\n\nSt. John’s Place Renaissance Garden\n1642 St Johns Place\nBrooklyn\, NY 11233

SUMMARY:Conference: The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures
DESCRIPTION:Exploring grassroots power & Asian American futures in NYC after Zohran Mamdani’s historic election.\n\n\nThe recent election of Zohran Mamdani—the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor—marks a historic shift in New York City’s political landscape. This victory stands not only as a milestone for AAPI and Muslim representation but as a testament to the power of grassroots\, working-class organizing. While often characterized as the “Mamdani Moment\,” this campaign’s trajectory from just 3% in early polling offers a profound case study in the collective “social technology” of door-to-door engagement and the merging of diverse identities. \nBuilding from this watershed moment\, AAARI’s 2026 symposium\, The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures\, invites a deeper conversation about what such victories reveal—how they reshape understandings of Asian American identity\, highlight the intersections of class and race\, and chart evolving strategies for civic engagement in an increasingly polarized era.

Led by Chef An Nguyen Hawks\, who hails from Vietnam and has called New York City home since 2014\, and her husband Erik\, Sen Saigon reimagines the dishes that An grew up loving. Inspired by her own journey into veganism\, Chef An crafts meals that are as innovative as they are deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture. \nDoti \nDOTI (Daughters of Taiwan & Indonesia) is a food brand born from two cultures and a deep belief that the best meals bring people together. It started with one trip to Indonesia\, one unforgettable bite\, and a craving that couldn’t be shaken back in New York City. So they did something about it. DOTI is on a mission to bring the bold\, vibrant tastes of Asia\, and the joy that comes with them to the world. \n  \nRegister
