SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever exhibition at The New York Public Library to explore the history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to NYC\, Niyū Yūrk highlights how the city has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers\, while celebrating their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. From Little Syria in Manhattan to Yemeni bodegas in Brooklyn\, from Armenian and Arab nightclubs along Eighth Avenue to community music festivals on Atlantic Avenue\, and from women’s activism and advocacy groups to experimental composers and playwrights like Halim El-Dabh and Reza Abdoh\, the exhibition shows how these rich stories are preserved within NYPL’s collections. \nNiyū Yūrk explores the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City\, from the first waves in the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition highlights how New York City has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers. It also emphasizes their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. \nThrough an array of materials—including local newspapers\, rare books\, archival documents\, prints\, artists’ books\, photographs\, music records\, and film—the exhibition showcases how these voices have been preserved and presented. Niyū Yūrk creates a dynamic dialogue across time\, illustrating the evolving nature of MENA migration to the city as well as the Library’s role in documenting this history. While reflecting on new directions in collecting practices\, it also aims to address gaps in those practices and envision a more inclusive archival future. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library and curated by Hiba Abid\, Curator for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:Art Exihibition – In Transit\, In Formation (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together four artists—Kakyoung Lee\, Buhm Hong\, Hong Seon Jang\, and Sun You—whose practices unfold between movement and becoming. Transit functions as a condition of passage through time\, labor\, and cultural frameworks\, while formation describes processes through which forms and identities take shape without closure. Working across sculpture\, installation\, animation\, and video\, the artists operate within these open-ended conditions\, occupying a dual state: always en route\, and at the same time\, becoming something else. \nThese four artists share more than a generational proximity. Based in New York and shaped by contemporary Korean diasporic conditions\, they have remained in ongoing dialogue for over a decade—observing one another’s practices\, exchanging questions\, and developing their work independently\, yet in close awareness of one another. The exhibition emerges from a sustained familiarity\, where distinct practices have evolved over time along parallel trajectories.

Filled with culinary storytelling\, The Diaspora Spice Co. Cookbook highlights these farmers and their spices with profiles and evocative photography\, plus 85 recipes for simple\, seasonal\, and powerfully delicious meals. \nCEO and founder Sana Javeri Kadri and recipe writer Asha Loupy realized that eating with the people who grow our spices unveils a whole new dimension in our cooking. For instance\, the Mir family\, who works all year to grow and harvest their saffron\, shared not only their technique for blooming the vibrant spice and how to make sure every thread is fully utilized\, but their unforgettably delicious dishes. Adapted for a global pantry\, these recipes share the warmth of true South Asian home cooking at its truest and tastiest\, starting with chutneys & pickles\, snacks\, and veggies\, traveling through to mains from the sea and from the land\, rice and breads\, and ending with drinks and desserts. \n  \nSana Javeri Kadri is the founder of Diaspora Spice Co\, a direct trade spice company building a radically equitable\, sustainable\, and more delicious spice supply chain. Born and raised in Mumbai\, India\, in a big\, mixed-up Muslim-Jain-Hindu family where food was the great unifier. She founded Diaspora Spice Co. in 2017 with a bold vision and a shoestring budget. Since then\, it has grown exponentially\, now working with more than 150 regenerative farms across India and Sri Lanka\, paying $3.1 million directly to farm partners over the past 6.5 years\, and bringing 27 single-origin spices and 13 bestselling blends to the world. With over 125\,000 customers globally and products stocked in 525+ retail stores across the US and UK\, the company is reshaping the spice trade—one fair\, flavorful\, and transparently sourced spice at a time. Sana currently splits her time between Mumbai\, India\, and Menlo Park\, California\, continuing to push for a food system that values the farmers and flavor at its foundation. \nAsha Loupy is an Oakland-based food writer\, recipe developer\, and co-author of The Diaspora Spice Co. Cookbook. She worked in the specialty food industry—from cheesemonger to grocery buyer—for over a decade before joining Diaspora Spice Co. in 2020\, where she served as Recipe Editor for 5+ years. She has contributed to cookbooks like Dan Pashman’s Anything’s Pastable and Joe Yonan’s Mastering the Art of Plant-Based Cooking\, in addition to publications like Bon Appétit\, Food52\, The Kitchn\, The Washington Post\, and Epicurious. You can also find Asha’s recipes in her weekly Substack newsletter\, From Head to Table\, and her forthcoming solo cookbook\, Dinner Season (out Fall 2027). \n  \nSamah Dada is a New York City–based recipe developer\, food photographer\, and the blogger behind Dada Eats. Drawing from her Indian heritage and inspired by the foodscapes of London\, California\, and New York\, she is the host of Cooking with Samah Dada on the Today show’s digital channel.

SUMMARY:Theater Performance: Dear John
DESCRIPTION:It’s 2011\, and a recent college graduate is trying to move out of her mom’s house (with little hope and no prospects) when she receives a message from a mysterious stranger named John on Facebook. Dear John is a solo show based on a true story about what happens when a long-absent father finds his not-quite-adult daughter through a social networking website. Weaving together Facebook DMs\, recorded interviews\, and anecdotes of growing up undocumented in New York’s Chinatown\, Dear John is a coming of age story delightfully told by writer and performer Rachel Lin about the ways we try (and fail) to reach each other\, over and over again.

SUMMARY:Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a CE workshop for affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans.\n\n\nTitle: Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy \nSubject: Affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans. \nCourse Description: “Queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans are a rich\, vibrant\, and diverse community\, yet\, are marginalized within multiple contexts. Anti-Arab\, anti-immigrant\, and cisheteronormative structural norms and policies in the United States intersect with intense cultural and religious beliefs about the incompatibility of sexual and gender diversity and Arab/SWANA identity” (Alsamadi\, 2025\, p.1). Consequently\, queer Arab/SWANA Americans may seek psychotherapy for support in managing stress related to intersectional oppression and disenfranchisement (Alsamadi\, 2025; Chaney et al.\, 2020; Habhab\, 2018; Ikizler & Szymanski\, 2014; Khatib et al.\, 2023). \nThe unique needs of this population are rendered invisible in psychology training programs and continuing education programming. As such\, this workshop will teach attendees (1) relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities; (2) common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans; and (3) how the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind (KRHM; Adames et al.\, 2023) therapeutic approach is relevant to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans. The workshop will conclude with a collaborative case example where attendees will apply the KRHM therapeutic approach to a composite clinical case of a queer second-generation Arab/SWANA American client. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will identify relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities.\nParticipants will identify common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\nParticipants will describe the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind therapeutic approach and its relevance to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\n\nPresenter Bio: \nDr. Nadia Alsamadi is a queer and nonbinary Palestinian American clinical psychologist\, educator\, and speaker in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area. Dr. Alsamadi is the founder of Beyond the Binary Psychotherapy and Consulting\, PLLC\, where they collaborate with LGBTQ+\, Arab/SWANA\, BIPOC\, and first/second generation immigrant clients to explore issues related to anxiety\, identity\, culture\, oppression\, and empowerment. They support their clients and collaborators in drawing strength and pride from their identities and culture\, resisting false dichotomies\, and reclaiming their own narratives. As a dynamic and engaging speaker\, they build relationships with individuals and organizations to deepen cultural humility\, critical consciousness\, and compassion for the complexity of the human experience. \nYou will also be eligible to earn 3.0 Continuing Education Credits if you hold a New York State License as an LMHC\, LCSW\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMFT\, LPsyAn (LP)\, or Psychologist. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0300\, licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0114\, licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0124\, and licensed psychoanalysts #P-0071. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0793. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0262. \nPlease Note: This training will not be recorded and the attendance list will only be shared with the presenter.

SUMMARY:Join Potluck Asian America at a Performance of Chinese Republicans with Reception & Talkback - $20 Tickets
DESCRIPTION:Join Potluck Asian America at a special community performance of Chinese Republicans with a pre-show reception catered by Jing Fong and a post-show conversation with Alex Lin and the cast!  $20 Tickets!\nChinese Republicans is a biting new satirical drama from Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Playwright Alex Lin and Award-Winning Director Chay Yew. \nThree high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs\, as they’ve done for decades. But the group is jolted when Katie\, a bright-eyed 24-year-old new to the workforce\, joins to navigate the world of corporate finance. As each of the women attempts to steer Katie towards what they’re certain is best\, they’re forced to grapple with how much they already have and are willing to sacrifice to climb the corporate ladder. \nShifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern capitalism\, this world premiere production explores themes of assimilation\, intergenerational conflict\, and gender politics in the workplace—all with unflinching wit and empathy. Chinese Republicans is a new play from a thrilling new American voice and tells a truly American story. \nThis performance includes a “pay what you wish” option starting at $20. Availability is limited and we encourage early RSVPs. \nCast: Jennifer Ikeda\, Ben Langhorst\, Jully Lee\, Jodi Long\, Anna Zavelson \nHarold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre\, Laura Pels Theatre\, 111 West 46th Street\, New York\, NY

Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, NYU Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality\, and NYU Department of Art & Public Policy. \nRSVP (open to the NYU community) \nWhere the scholar’s body is often obscured in preference for their mind\, evacuating the body from academic labor is a luxury rarely available to queer people of color. This talk explores the possibilities of self-fashioning in the academy for minoritarian subjects. Tracing his trajectory across various intellectual projects—queer South Asian nightlife\, global drag\, representations of the aunty—Kareem Khubchandani explores the co-constitutive relationships between research\, teaching\, and artistry\, between ethnography\, analysis\, pedagogy\, and performance. \nKareem Khubchandani is the author of the award-winning books Decolonize Drag and Ishtyle: Accenting Gay Indian Nightlife. He is also co-editor of the Lambda Literary-nominated Queer Nightlife\, guest editor of Text and Performance Quarterly’s “Critical Aunty Studies\,” and associate editor for GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies. Kareem is Associate Professor of theater\, dance\, and performance studies at Tufts University and FO Matthiessen Visiting Associate Professor of Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Harvard University. His new book\, Lessons in Drag: A Queer Manual for Academics\, Artists\, and Aunties is now out from Brandeis University Press. \nHosted by XE Faculty Fellow Alisha Cherian. \nNYU campus access guidelines: This is an in-person event\, open to the NYU community only. Registration is required. \nAccessibility note: This venue is located on the fourth floor and is accessible via elevator. SUMMARY:Book Talk: The Complex: Karan Mahajan with Keith Gessen (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Follow the illicit liaisons\, political ambitions\, and mortal betrayals of one prominent Delhi family in a sweeping novel from National Book Award finalist Karan Mahajan. \nThe Complex: The sons and daughters of SP Chopra\, one of India’s political architects\, live together in a sprawling Delhi complex\, vying for influence in a family shaped by the great man’s legacy. By the late 1970s\, the still-young nation is on the brink of transformation\, and the Chopras are scrambling to define their own futures. Sachin Chopra leaves for America\, followed by his bride\, Gita\, eager to forge a life beyond the pressures of the family compound. Yet Delhi keeps pulling them back—even as Sachin’s predatory uncle\, Laxman\, hounds Gita. A man of restless ambition\, Laxman ascends through the ranks of a rising Hindu nationalist movement\, caught between his political aspirations and his personal transgressions. As India erupts in violence and long-buried secrets come to light\, the embattled Chopras must reckon with the cost of power\, the weight of tradition\, and the shifting nature of love and allegiance. \nKaran Mahajan worked on The Complex during his 2018-2019 Fellowship at the Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. He will discuss his book with writer Keith Gessen. \nTo join this event in-person | Please be sure to register for an In-Person Ticket.
