SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever exhibition at The New York Public Library to explore the history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to NYC\, Niyū Yūrk highlights how the city has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers\, while celebrating their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. From Little Syria in Manhattan to Yemeni bodegas in Brooklyn\, from Armenian and Arab nightclubs along Eighth Avenue to community music festivals on Atlantic Avenue\, and from women’s activism and advocacy groups to experimental composers and playwrights like Halim El-Dabh and Reza Abdoh\, the exhibition shows how these rich stories are preserved within NYPL’s collections. \nNiyū Yūrk explores the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City\, from the first waves in the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition highlights how New York City has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers. It also emphasizes their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. \nThrough an array of materials—including local newspapers\, rare books\, archival documents\, prints\, artists’ books\, photographs\, music records\, and film—the exhibition showcases how these voices have been preserved and presented. Niyū Yūrk creates a dynamic dialogue across time\, illustrating the evolving nature of MENA migration to the city as well as the Library’s role in documenting this history. While reflecting on new directions in collecting practices\, it also aims to address gaps in those practices and envision a more inclusive archival future. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library and curated by Hiba Abid\, Curator for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

DESCRIPTION:Jesse Appell and This Was Funnier in China book cover \nJoin us for an evening of laughter\, storytelling\, and cultural insights with bilingual comedian and author Jesse Appell\, to celebrate the launch of his new book\, This Was Funnier in China. As part of his book tour\, he brings his new English-language comedy show\, This Show Was Funnier in China\, to Asia Society. The show blends humor with personal stories from his life as a Chinese comedian’s apprentice\, along with selected readings from the book. \nHis journey began with a Fulbright Fellowship to Beijing\, where he apprenticed under Master Ding Guangquan to learn the traditional Chinese comedy art of Xiangsheng (相声) — a traditional Chinese comedic art form known for its witty dialogue\, wordplay\, and rapid-fire banter between performers. Often compared to Western stand-up or sketch comedy\, Xiangsheng has been a cornerstone of Chinese humor for centuries. Over the next decade\, Jesse became a key figure in China’s modern comedy scene\, appearing on popular TV shows like Huan Le Xiju Ren (欢乐 喜剧人) and creating viral content that has garnered over 500 million views worldwide. \nFollowing the show\, stay for an engaging audience Q&A and discussion about comedy\, culture\, and what it means to find humor across borders. \n$15 Members\, $25 Nonmembers. SUMMARY:Trans Caribbean: Queer and Trans Arts\, Rights\, and Activism
DESCRIPTION:Co-organized by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and The Latinx Project at NYU. Co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality (CSGS)\, Hemispheric Institute\, Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, and the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD). \nDETAILS & REGISTRATION \nAs trans rights and embodiment are under attack in the United States\, trans activists and legal activists are advancing a broad trans rights agenda across the Caribbean. Colombia’s proposed Ley Integral Trans\, for instance\, aims to protect the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals\, while ensuring their full equality and participation in all areas of society. Meanwhile\, like millions of others\, queer and trans people in the Caribbean have historically lived across and beyond national boundaries. Our invited guests discuss their experiences of advocating for trans rights\, sustaining creative practice\, and convening community while crossing gendered\, legal\, and geographic boundaries. The conversations will be accompanied by two performances that illustrate the complexity of living life across boundaries. \nThe first panel\, focused on the struggle for rights\, recognition\, and equality in Colombia\, stages a conversation between Liga de Salud Trans activists Juli Salamanca Cortés and Yoko Ruiz and their artistic collaborators\, photographer Camila Falquez and author Cesar Vallejo. Moderated by Professor Bel Olid (University of Chicago). \nThe second panel examines the Trans Caribbean through its artistic\, social\, and legal movements through a conversation with advocate and program strategist Dane Lewis\, interdisciplinary artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes (LaBoriVogue)\, installation and performance artist Carlos Martiel\, and Black Trans Liberation activist Qween Jean. Moderated by Professor Leo Douglas (NYU Liberal Studies). This panel threads together experiences that cross Cuba\, Jamaica\, Haiti\, Puerto Rico\, and the United States. \nThe closing reception features performances by poet Suzanne Persard\, poet Darrel Alejandro Holnes\, and artist Edrimael Delgado Reyes. Persard is published in the poetry anthology I Will Not Go: Translations\, Transformations\, and Chutney Fractals (Kaya Press\, 2024)\, and Holnes is published in When Language Broke Open: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Black Writers of Latin American Descent (University of Arizona Press\, 2023). \nAccessibility note: This event is free and open to the public with RSVP. The building has a wheelchair ramp and elevator. For any questions or to notify us of additional accommodation requests\, please email clacs@nyu.edu at least a week prior to the event. \nImage: Samantha Siagama\, Trans-Indigenous Leader. As a 22-year-old in Spring 1968\, he came to the United States with only $8 in his pocket to do graduate studies in Operations Research/Computer Science at Cornell. He built a 39-year career at the global Fortune 500 specialty materials company Rohm and Haas\, where he retired as Chairman and CEO in April 2009. \nOver his career\, he has served as a director at 15 public companies across a wide range of industries\, including Hewlett Packard\, DuPont\, Arconic/Howmet\, Delphi/Aptiv\, Airgas\, Tyco and Avantor. She also led the development of Facebook’s first mobile ad product for apps and its mobile ad network\, in addition to building the company’s games business and its payments platform\, including Facebook Pay. Named by PaymentsSource as one of the most influential women in payments and one of Business Insider’s most powerful female engineers\, Deb has worked in the tech industry for over 18 years. SUMMARY:“Archival Interregnum: Caste\, Sexuality\, Indenture\,” A Lecture by Anjali Arondekar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Comparative Approaches to the Literatures of Africa\, the Middle East\, and the Global South (CALAMEGS) 2025-26 Lecture Series. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, NYU Department of Social & Cultural Analysis\, and Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality at NYU. \nRSVP \nWhile Mauritius remains the place from which my questions emerge\, it is also an area impossible\, a geo-epistemology that confounds histories of sexuality and caste in/and South Asia and the broader Indian Ocean world.  Indenture is the archival interregnum—especially in Mauritius—where our attachments to counter-archives\, origin-stories\, run amuck. If archives of indenture are flooded with markers of identification that suture presence to labor\, what happens to the labor of caste and sexuality that lives unaccounted within economies of such enumeration? How do we think histories of indenture outside settled archival forms\, outside technologies of historical recuperation\, where we historicize not to materialize absence\, but to speak to the weight of our historical anchors? How do we couple the abundance of historical reading with the oceanic voyages of indenture\, caste and sexuality? Caste and sexuality here are not tracked through acts/practices that might return us to identitarian forms; rather I read archival records of caste and sexuality against the settlement and lure of reproductive futurities. \nAnjali Arondekar is Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation Presidential Professor of Feminist Studies\, University of California\, Santa Cruz. She was the founding director\, Center for South Asian Studies\, 2020-24. Her research engages the comparative poetics and politics of sexuality\, caste\, and historiography\, with a focus on South Asia and the broader Indian Ocean world. She is the author of two award-winning monographs: For the Record: On Sexuality and the Colonial Archive in India (Duke University Press\, 2009\, Orient Blackswan\, India\, 2010); and Abundance: Sexuality’s History (Duke University Press\, 2023\, Orient Blackswan\, 2023). Arondekar’s third book-in progress\, entitled\, Oceanic Sex: Archives of Caste and Indenture\, couples the archival forms of indenture with the oceanic voyages of caste and sexuality. \n  \nAccessibility note: This event is free and open to the public with RSVP. The venue is located on the ground level and is accessible with two sets of automatic doors. For any accommodation requests\, please email amb10317@nyu.edu.
