SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever exhibition at The New York Public Library to explore the history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to NYC\, Niyū Yūrk highlights how the city has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers\, while celebrating their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. From Little Syria in Manhattan to Yemeni bodegas in Brooklyn\, from Armenian and Arab nightclubs along Eighth Avenue to community music festivals on Atlantic Avenue\, and from women’s activism and advocacy groups to experimental composers and playwrights like Halim El-Dabh and Reza Abdoh\, the exhibition shows how these rich stories are preserved within NYPL’s collections. \nNiyū Yūrk explores the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City\, from the first waves in the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition highlights how New York City has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers. It also emphasizes their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. \nThrough an array of materials—including local newspapers\, rare books\, archival documents\, prints\, artists’ books\, photographs\, music records\, and film—the exhibition showcases how these voices have been preserved and presented. Niyū Yūrk creates a dynamic dialogue across time\, illustrating the evolving nature of MENA migration to the city as well as the Library’s role in documenting this history. While reflecting on new directions in collecting practices\, it also aims to address gaps in those practices and envision a more inclusive archival future. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library and curated by Hiba Abid\, Curator for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Transtrack
DESCRIPTION:Transtrack transforms the idea of a train platform into a multisensory space where the voices of elderly immigrants recount life journeys\, weaving an immersive landscape of sound\, vibration\, and oral history. The work amplifies overlooked immigrant voices—honoring those whose labor\, like the immigrants who built the transcontinental railroad\, remains absent from history. \nAlong a line of vibrating speakers\, memories ripple like passing trains. As the noise fades\, gentle voices recall landscapes that shaped their journeys. This shifting soundscape reflects the emotional terrain of immigration\, where the past is never still and stories unfold like landscapes passing a train window. Inside the space\, a waiting area invites new recordings\, connecting elders and younger generations through shared storytelling. \nBuilding on Phunsombatlert’s community centered practice and ongoing exploration of oral immigration histories gathered from local elders\, the exhibition invites participants from diverse backgrounds to share memories of landscape and migration\, fostering moments of cross-cultural connection. More than an artwork\, Transtrack is a living archive—preserving immigration memory through movement\, sound\, and presence. \nTransmitter is currently open 1–6pm on weekends and by appointment.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS - Over Hills and Valleys
DESCRIPTION:Over Hills and Valleys is a musical imagination of the shared history of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music and its people.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is pleased to welcome back resident artist Benjamin “saxofshaolin” Chin for a special concert of Over Hills and Valleys: An Imagination of the Shared History of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican Music. \nOver Hills and Valleys is a musical imagination of the shared history of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music and its people. Accompanied by Grammy-nominated Reggae producer\, Andre “Dretegs” Hawthorne\, the duo will perform a set of original music and covers that will trace the migration patterns of the Hakka Chinese from Southeast Asia to the Caribbean to New York City. In addition\, the pair will discuss and share behind-the-scenes footage of the writing and recording process of the project. Join us for this unique afternoon concert that brings together the resonant traditions of Hakka Chinese and Jamaican music in a one-of-a-kind cultural encounter. \n“Over Hills and Valleys” is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n \nABOUT Benjamin “saxofshaolin” Chin\nBen Chin\, aka saxofshaolin\, is the confluence between East and West. As a saxophonist\, composer\, and bandleader\, he seeks to merge the musical lineages of his upbringing. He fuses American\, South East Asian\, and Afro-Caribbean music and creates music that sounds like a dance between the ancestors of the three traditions. This is not only an effort to experiment with music but also to find common ground between far-flung cultures. It’s an approach that has developed\, instinctually\, from his experience as an immigrant and a Hakka Chinese\, a nomad by blood. His music is simultaneously traditional and contemporary. Equally aggressive and tasteful. Always danceable and spiritual. \nOutside of saxofshaolin\, Ben is a part of a handful of music and food startups in New York City. Whether it’s via Resonator\, QNA\, Moonlite\, or Bagel Joint\, he integrates his love of culture into every project\, product\, or piece of food. \nBen Chin is a 2024 Artist-in-Residence at the Museum of Chinese in America\, and Google Next Gen Policy Leader.

Winners of the auction will also be able to pick up their pieces at that time. If you can’t join us\, you can still bid on the MOONSquare auction remotely here. The proceeds will be shared between T!C and the artists\, so this is an incredible opportunity to support as well as learn more about our community!  \nTo cap off the year we will be serving tangyuan\, a sweet and warming traditional treat eaten to celebrate Dongzhi (the Winter Solstice). We’d love to see you all and wish our friends & neighbors a happy holiday before our studio goes into hibernation!

Rather than prescribing solutions or policy\, this event focuses on storytelling as a catalyst for empathy\, understanding\, and change — illuminating the realities many families live with quietly and the collective work still left to be done. For this special session\, Yadi partners with meditation teacher Michel Pascal\, whose gentle guidance and occasional live vocal elements create a serene\, multi-sensory environment. \nParticipants are invited to pause\, breathe\, and step into the program from within\, becoming part of a shared ritual of presence\, quiet observation\, and embodied awareness. \nNotes: \n\nThis session will be gently documented through photos and videos.\nImages may include wide shots of the group and close-ups of the artistic process.\nSelect images may be used by the artist for non-commercial artistic purposes.\nIf you prefer not to be photographed\, please let our team know at check-in and we will gladly accommodate.\n\nAbout Yadi Liu \nYadi Liu is a New York–based visual artist and the founder of Armat\, an artist-led initiative exploring how contemporary ritual\, perception\, and Eastern philosophy can shape shared cultural experiences. A Society of Illustrators Gold Medalist\, Liu works with fluid linework and abstraction to examine ideas of presence\, transformation\, and the unseen dimensions of human experience. \nHer live drawing practice integrates projected photography with real-time mark-making\, creating images that gradually obscure and reveal participants’ forms. Through this process\, Liu investigates the shifting boundary between the visible and the interior\, inviting audiences to witness “inner states” as evolving\, communal artworks. \nLiu’s work has been presented in public settings in New York’s Chinatown\, in experimental workshops with graduate students at FIT (SUNY)\, and in cross-disciplinary collaborations that bridge contemporary art with wellness and community engagement. Through Armat\, she continues to expand visual ritual as a participatory art form rooted in civic\, cultural\, and contemplative spaces. \nAbout Michel Pascal \nMichel Pascal is an internationally respected vocalist\, author\, and meditation teacher whose work combines contemplative practice with the immersive power of sound. For nearly a decade\, he has performed annual concerts at Carnegie Hall\, where his distinctive style\, often described as “The Medicine Voice”\, creates resonant environments for collective calm. His programs have been presented at the Rubin Museum of Art\, the NYC Mayor’s Office and other cultural and civic institutions. \nPascal trained for fifteen years in Himalayan contemplative traditions\, developing voice-based techniques centered on grounding\, visualization\, and emotional steadiness. He is the author of more than twenty books on stress reduction and mindfulness. \nHis trauma-informed programs for veterans\, first responders\, and justice-involved communities\, including collaborations with the Amity Foundation\, have been recognized for their measurable impact on stress and well-being. Across performance\, wellness\, and public settings\, Pascal’s voice functions as a stabilizing instrument for collective presence. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet?
