SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History. \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: Xyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home
DESCRIPTION:Picnic\, 2022. Courtesy of the artist. \nOctober 4 – November 2\, 2025\nFlux IV\, 56-21 2nd Street\nOpen Saturdays\, 12:00 – 6:00 pm or by appointment \nFlux Factory is pleased to present The Diaspora is Home\, a solo exhibition by Xyza Cruz Bacani. This exhibition presents photographs of the Asian American diaspora\, from portraits in living rooms to scenes of community gatherings\, food traditions\, and religious practices. Installed within a living room environment\, Bacani’s work evokes belonging and cultural continuity\, transforming the gallery into a space of warmth\, reflection\, and collective memory. The Diaspora is Home runs from October 4 – November 2\, 2025 with an opening reception on Saturday\, October 4\, accompanied by the presence of community members who appear in the photographs\, sharing food they have prepared\, and a tea demonstration by Anna Ye. \nThe Diaspora is Home invites you into the lived experience of immigrants in Queens. When we leave our motherlands\, we take more than our belongings. We bring our languages\, flavors\, the strength of our ancestors\, and resilience forged in hardship. Leaving is never simple. Arriving is a different story. We carry the pains of separations; traumas that we can still taste in our mouths. We learned to find joy in our small victories\, pride in our survival\, and accept the scars of migration as beauty in building anew. This exhibition traces these dualities: joy and struggle\, memory and reinvention. \nDeveloped through visits to homes and close engagement with community members\, Bacani’s works reflect an intimate process of trust and reciprocity. The accompanying living room installation mirrors the spaces in which the photographs were taken\, creating a familiar and welcoming environment. By inviting visitors to gather\, sit\, and reflect\, the installation transforms Flux IV into a site of hospitality and shared presence\, underscoring the centrality of home within the diasporic experience. Each work in The Diaspora is Home speaks to the search for home\, the courage to remain visible\, and the tenderness of community. In today’s world\, where immigrants are portrayed negatively and our existence is questioned daily\, we choose to tell our own stories. \nJoin us on this journey. Bring your own stories. Together\, we honor the spaces between us\, find our home in the diaspora where kindness grows\, hope lives\, and celebrate our undeniable existence. \nXyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home is presented as part of the artist’s 2025 NYSCA Fellowship. Special thanks to Fujifilm US\, Martin Kaminer\, and the Tim Hermann Charitable Family Foundation for their support. \nAbout the Artist\nXyza Cruz Bacani (b. 1987\, the Philippines) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist and writer based in New York. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever exhibition at The New York Public Library to explore the history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to NYC\, Niyū Yūrk highlights how the city has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers\, while celebrating their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. From Little Syria in Manhattan to Yemeni bodegas in Brooklyn\, from Armenian and Arab nightclubs along Eighth Avenue to community music festivals on Atlantic Avenue\, and from women’s activism and advocacy groups to experimental composers and playwrights like Halim El-Dabh and Reza Abdoh\, the exhibition shows how these rich stories are preserved within NYPL’s collections. \nNiyū Yūrk explores the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City\, from the first waves in the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition highlights how New York City has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers. It also emphasizes their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. \nThrough an array of materials—including local newspapers\, rare books\, archival documents\, prints\, artists’ books\, photographs\, music records\, and film—the exhibition showcases how these voices have been preserved and presented. Niyū Yūrk creates a dynamic dialogue across time\, illustrating the evolving nature of MENA migration to the city as well as the Library’s role in documenting this history. While reflecting on new directions in collecting practices\, it also aims to address gaps in those practices and envision a more inclusive archival future. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library and curated by Hiba Abid\, Curator for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

SUMMARY:The Immigration and Nationality Act 60 Years Later: The Making of Modern New York City (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as Roosevelt House and the Tenement Museum host a discussion to mark the 60th anniversary of the Immigration and Nationality Act\, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 3\, 1965. Lifting the restrictive 41-year-old national origins quotas\, the law—also known as The Hart-Celler Act—ushered in a new era of immigration\, and laid the groundwork for the formation of modern New York City. \nModerated by Hunter College professor of sociology Margaret Chin\, this discussion will feature sociologist and Hunter College professor emerita Nancy Foner\, history professor Mae Ngai\, and former New York City demographer Joe Salvo. The panel will consider both how the new law impacted the city and the nation at the time of its signing\, and how it continues to impact the national conversation on immigration to this day. \nMargaret M. Chin is Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department at Hunter College and a Faculty Associate of both Roosevelt House and the Asian American Studies Center. She is the author of Sewing Women: Immigrants and the New York City Garment Industry; Stuck: Why Asian Americans Don’t Reach the Top of the Corporate Ladder; and\, with Syed Ali\, The Peer Effect: How Your Peers Shape Who You Are and Who You Will Become\, which she appeared at Roosevelt House to discuss. \nNancy Foner is a Distinguished Emerita Professor in the Hunter College Department of Sociology\, and former Roosevelt House Faculty Associate. She is the author of One Quarter of the Nation: Immigration and the Transformation of America\, which she discussed in 2022 Roosevelt House program; Strangers No More: Immigration and the Challenges of Integration in North America and Western Europe; From Ellis Island to JFK: New York’s Two Great Waves of Immigration; and One Out of Three: Immigrant New York in the Twenty-First Century. \nMae M. Ngai is Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and professor of history at Columbia University. She is the author of Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America; The Lucky Ones: One Family and the Extraordinary Invention of Chinese America; The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes and Global Politics; and the forthcoming Nation of Immigrants: A Short History of an Idea. \nJoe Salvo is a former chief demographer at the New York City Department of City Planning. He is also a former director of the department’s population division\, which provides population estimates and projections for infrastructure\, capital\, and policy planning. SUMMARY:Rediscovering Saint Malo: The First Permanent Asian American Settlement
DESCRIPTION:Explore the fascinating history of St. Malo\, Louisiana\, the first permanent Asian settlement in the United States\, established as early as 1763. Contributing to the thriving fishing industry\, Filipino sailors settled the swamps of St. Malo\, but very few sources from the perspective of Filipinos exist. The workshop will demonstrate the ways to utilize poetry as a medium to learn about St. Malo while also analyzing and evaluating outsider accounts of Saint Malo to unearth the truth of the settlement. Educators will leave the workshop with new historical insights and classroom-ready activities to teach about Asian Americans’ enduring role in shaping the United States. Perfect for lessons on immigration\, colonization\, and early American life\, this session sheds light on an important yet often overlooked chapter of our shared past. \nFacilitator: Rachael Richard\, TAAS Ambassador \nFree and open to all. Professional Development hours awarded. \nThis event is brought to you by Teach Asian American Stories and AAPI New Jersey.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by the NYU Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nAlvin K. Wong (University of Hong Kong) joins the NYU Center for the Study of Gender & Sexuality for a discussion about his new book Unruly Comparison Queerness\, Hong Kong\, and the Sinophone (Duke University Press\, 2025). \nThe book examines queerness in Hong Kong through a transdisciplinary analysis of Sinophone literature\, cinema\, visual culture\, and civil society. Moving beyond Eurocentrism in queer theory and China-centrism in area studies\, Wong frames Hong Kong as a model for global comparison by theorizing a method of unruly comparison—acknowledging the incommensurability of cultural texts and queer figures across different temporal and spatial locations. Here\, unruly comparison positions Hong Kong as an undefinable time-space that troubles historicist\, colonial\, and China-centric renderings of the city as merely a site of British colonial legacy\, Chinese rule\, or global capital. Wong analyzes queer interracial desire in World War II; a cinema of gay male cosmopolitanism; queer intimacy among migrant workers; trans visuality and legality; cross-border sex work; and the queer diaspora of Hong Kong after the 2019 protests. Through Wong’s readings\, Hong Kong becomes a queer region of racial\, gender\, and sexual incommensurability. By foregrounding the friction\, asymmetry\, and perverse juxtapositions of unruly comparison of Hong Kong with the Sinophone world\, Wong reframes key debates in queer theory and East Asian studies. \nA limited number of free copies will be available at the event. \nAlvin K. Wong is assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong. He is also the Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Globalization and Cultures. His research covers Hong Kong literature and cinema\, Sinophone studies\, queer theory\, and transnational feminism. His book Unruly Comparison: Queerness\, Hong Kong\, and the Sinophone is published by Duke University Press in 2025. He has also published in journals such as Journal of Lesbian Studies\, Gender\, Place & Culture\, Culture\, Theory\, and Critique\, Cultural Dynamics\, Continuum\, Diacritics\, Journal of Chinese Cinemas\, Interventions\, and Screen. He also coedited the volume Keywords in Queer Sinophone Studies (Routledge\, 2020). Alvin is the editor of the journal Continuum and Chair of the Society of Sinophone Studies. \nNYU campus access guidelines: This is an in-person event\, open to the public. Registration is required. \nAccessibility note: This venue has an elevator and is accessible for wheelchair users. There are single-stall\, all gender restrooms\, and a lactation room available. SUMMARY:Dance: Of Dishes and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Of Dishes and Dreams is a new evening-length creation choreographed by Spring 2024 Baryshnikov Arts residency artist Keerati Jinakunwiphat. Inspired by her experiences growing up in a family-run Thai restaurant\, Jinakunwiphat explores service\, synergy\, and the balance between order and chaos. Set to an original score by Quaba Ernest and Bryndon Cook\, the piece evokes the energetic pulse of kitchens and home-cooked meals. The evening’s visual landscape will be designed by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya\, incorporating traditional textiles\, sculpture\, and domestic objects. Together\, the dancers transform an everyday space into a sphere of healing and belonging\, driven by themes of lineage\, community\, and the American Dream. \n“It’s rare for a young artist to emerge so quickly with a distinctive choreographic voice\, but Keerati has that confidence\, vision\, and originality. So what if her colleagues don’t know she exists\, or her friends won’t stop lecturing her about the three-year ‘situationship’ she’s in? It’s not like she’s starving. \nBut something is wrong\, and while the people around her seem to have all the right words\, nobody can articulate what they want from each other. As obstacles mount and the easy-going persona Muskan has built starts to crumble\, she is forced to face a question that’s been quietly burning at the back of her mind: Why did her family move to America so abruptly? \nWarm\, funny\, and sharply observed\, Ghost Chilli is a story about trying to find honest relationships in an isolating world\, and the weight we unwittingly carry. \n‘A rich coming-of-age story full of punchy and astute observations about everyday relationships‘ COSMPOLITAN \n‘By turns witty\, compassionate\, and toe-curling.
