SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. SUMMARY:A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart by Nishant Batsha
DESCRIPTION:Nishant Batsha’s expansive and poignant novel of love\, radical ambition\, and intellectual rebirth set at the dawn of World War I.\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation with author Nishant Batsha to celebrate his new book\, the extraordinary story of a marriage caught at the intersection of radical politics and everyday life. He’ll be speaking with Executive Director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop Jafreen Uddin\, followed by a signing. \nThis event is co-presented by AAWW. \nPLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come\, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. \nCan’t attend? Order your signed copy (please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). \n\n\n\nAn expansive and poignant novel of love\, radical ambition\, and intellectual rebirth set at the dawn of World War I \nAt a party near Stanford University’s campus in 1917\, Cora Trent\, a graduate student raised in the rugged mining towns of the American West\, meets Indra Mukherjee\, an Indian revolutionary newly arrived in California. Indra is grieving the recent loss of a friend and unsure of the place violence has in the cause of national liberation\, while Cora is seeking a new life that stays true to her aspirations as a writer and an idealist. They spark an instant connection\, and their passionate romance deepens as they attend protests alongside anticolonial dissidents and socialize with eccentric thinkers in Berkeley and Palo Alto. All the while\, Indra awaits orders from a mysterious German spymaster. \nCora and Indra quickly marry\, even as the United States is drawn into the conflict in Europe and wartime patriotism begins to give way to increasing intolerance. When news of arrests threatens their future together\, they are forced to flee to New York City with the hope that they can avoid the attention of the British and American authorities. Trying to find footing in their new life\, Cora and Indra must reckon with divergent ambitions that challenge the foundations of their hasty marriage—and their freedom. \nProfound\, immersive\, tenderly written\, and with finely wrought characters drawn from the forgotten archives of American history\, A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart is an extraordinary story of a marriage caught at the intersection of radical politics and everyday life. \n\n\n\nNishant Batsha is the author of the novel Mother Ocean Father Nation\, named a finalist for a 2023 Lambda Literary Award and listed as one the best books of 2022 by NPR\, among other honors. He lives in Buffalo\, New York\, with his family. \n\n\n\nJafreen Uddin is Executive Director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, a national literary nonprofit dedicated to amplifying Asian and Asian diasporic storytelling. She is the first woman to lead the organization since its founding in 1991. She previously served as Deputy Director of Development for Special Events at PEN America and as Events Manager with the Brennan Center for Justice. Jafreen regularly supports and volunteers her time with a number of arts and social change organizations\, including serving on the Steering Committee for LitNet and as a Literary Council Member for the Brooklyn Book Festival.

She has a well-paid job\, a nice boyfriend\, and plans to marry and move into a luxury high-rise apartment. She’s wanting for nothing–until her childhood best friend\, Luo Wenyu\, comes whirling back into her life after a decade in California with seemingly everything–a successful career as an influencer\, a millionaire American fiancé\, and a bespoke mansion in the Beijing suburbs–throwing Lian’s own reliable choices into high relief. \nAs the two women rekindle their friendship\, Wenyu reveals a shocking secret about a past love that pushes Lian to question her own relationship. A few neighborhoods away\, aging architect Song Chen is forced to confront his own past and the dissolution of his marriage as he’s tasked with building Wenyu’s dream home. And when the dark side of Wenyu’s enviable life emerges and threatens everything Lian and Wenyu have built for themselves\, they must make a choice between the stable known and the frightening unknown that may have devastating and unexpected consequences. \nIn girlhood memories and karaoke afternoons in Xidan Square\, in aspirational YouTube channels and billboard ads\, in private hotel rendezvous and secret WeChat messages\, Claire Jia’s debut novel is a love letter to friendship; a powder keg of impossible\, interwoven desires; a siren song that explores why\, even as it destroys us\, we always want more. \n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Joe Abriatis \nClaire Jia is a writer from Illinois. Her work has appeared in the New York Times Modern Love column\, The Rumpus\, Reductress\, and more. She writes for television and video games\, including the 2024 Peabody Award-winning We Are OFK. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Tracy Slater\, author of the new book Together in Manzanar: The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp\, and Densho Content Director Brian Niiya. \nTogether in Manzanar tells the fascinating and little-known story of prominent labor and antifascist activists Elaine Yoneda\, the child of Russian Jewish immigrants\, and her husband Karl\, a Kibei who had cut his union organizing teeth in Hiroshima before returning to California. This new narrative history follows the Yonedas as they navigate forced removal and incarceration during WWII\, bringing with it a series of painful choices and conflicting loyalties\, upheavals and violence\, and a quest to survive with their children safe\, their family whole\, and their ethics intact.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Pornsak Pichetshote\, J. Holtham\, Michael Lee Harris and Michael Walsh (The Horizon Experiment)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a discussion with the creative team behind the critically acclaimed comic anthology\, The Horizon Experiment\,  a collection of five one-shots by some of the most celebrated names in comics\, literature\, TV\, and film\, providing pilots for new series featuring a Chinese James Bond\, a Muslim exorcist\, a reverse Indiana Jones\, East African werewolves living in Miami\, and an Evil Dead for black nerds! \nAuthor Bios  \n \nPornsak Pichetshote started his career as a Thai-American rising star editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint\, his books being nominated for dozens of Eisner awards — from the award-winning Daytripper to critical darling Sweet Tooth. He left Vertigo to become an executive in DC Entertainment’s media team\, where he started and oversaw DC’s TV department. His critical and commercial horor book Infidel marked his first major work as a comics writer. His current work with Image Comics is the Eisner- and Harvey-winning The Good Asian\, which he’s currently adapting for television with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. \n \nJ. Holtham is an American screenwriter\, best known for his work on TV shows such as Cloak and Dagger\, Jessica Jones\, and Supergirl. He recently broke into Marvel Comics with Bishop- War College\, and is bringing back fan favorite nineties character\, Night Thrasher\, for his first solo series in 30 years. \n \nAfrican-American cartoonist Michael Lee Harris is one of indie comics’ most singular voices. A jack of all trades\, he is the creator\, writer\, and artist of Black Hitler and Choco Leche while also illustrating such eclectic and distinct titles as The Black Wraith\, Berlin\, and 1945: The True Untold Story in his unique style. \n \nIn 2013\, Michael Walsh broke into comics with the Image Comics book series COMEBACK. Shortly after\, Michael contributed art on a follow-up comic to the hit television series The X-Files for IDW. Then\, in the following years\, he worked primarily with Marvel Comics on superhero properties such as Spider-Man\, The Avengers and the X-Men. He also adapted the Star Wars film The Last Jedi as a comic book mini-series. And created art for the DC/Dark Horse crossover event comic\, Black Hammer/Justice League. \nIn 2021\, Michael returned to creator-owned comics\, creating the hit ongoing Image series THE SILVER COIN and the viral webcomic The Sleep Stories. In 2022\, he released his middle-grade fantasy original graphic novel The Oates & The Elphyne\, published by Humanoids BIG. \n\n\n\n\nAssistive Listening and ASL\nASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. Today\, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches\, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members\, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag\, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe\, how the community can continue to grow\, and more broadly\, what it means to be Indigenous. \nIn Nothing More of This Land\, Lee weaves his own story and that of his family into a panoramic narrative of Indigenous life around the world. He takes us from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the icy Alaskan tundra\, the smoky forests of Northern California to the halls of the United Nations\, and beyond. Along the way he meets activists fighting to protect their land\, families clashing with their own tribal leaders\, and communities working to reclaim tradition. \nTogether\, these stories reject stereotypes to show the diversity of Indigenous people today and chart a way past the stubborn legacy of colonialism. \n  \nJoseph Lee is an Aquinnah Wampanoag writer based in New York City. He has an MFA from Columbia University and teaches creative writing at Mercy University. His writing has been published in The Guardian\, BuzzFeed News\, Vox\, Electric Literature\, High Country News\, and more. He was a Margins Fellow at the Asian American Writers Workshop and a Senior Indigenous Affairs Fellow at Grist. He has won multiple awards from the Indigenous Journalists Association for environmental coverage\, health coverage\, and beat reporting and this book was awarded a 2024 Silvers Grant for Work in Progress. Follow him on X at @JosephVLee and on Instagram at @Joseph.V.Lee. \nLeslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters\, The Recovering\, and The Empathy Exams; the collection of essays Make It Scream\, Make It Burn\, a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award; and the novel The Gin Closet\, a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. She writes regularly for The New Yorker and her work has appeared in many places including The New York Times\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, and the New York Review of Books.
