SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

SUMMARY:[REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS: Hyphen Reunion with Co-Founders Melissa Hung and Bernice Yeung
DESCRIPTION:A celebratory event for Hyphen readers\, contributors\, and community members to reconnect and share stories!\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) warmly invites you to an insightful conversation with Melissa Hung and Bernice Yeung\, co-founders of Hyphen magazine. Established in 2002 as a direct response to the closure of A. Magazine\, Hyphen emerged from the collective vision of a new generation of Asian American voices. \nMelissa Hung and Bernice Yeung\, friends since their college days at Northwestern University\, were deeply saddened by the shuttering of this influential publication. Determined to address this void\, they convened a gathering of writers and scholars—including Chris Fan\, Claire Light\, and Oliver Wang—in San Francisco. From this pivotal meeting\, the concept of Hyphen magazine was born. Its name symbolizes the intersectionality of identities and the connections within the Asian American community. Hyphen challenged stereotypical portrayals of Asian Americans by skillfully blending rigorous investigative journalism with creative and offbeat cultural coverage. \nFollowing the discussion\, a reunion reception will provide an opportunity for Hyphen readers\, contributors\, and community members to reconnect\, share stories\, and explore MOCA’s special exhibition\, Magazine Fever: Gen X Asian American Periodicals: \nIn the 1980s and ’90s\, as Asian American identity transformed from a radical vision born of political agitation into a broadly recognized demographic\, how did ethnic magazines reflect this new consciousness? Magazine Fever surveys a surge of Asian American magazine publishing during the multicultural era including A. Magazine\, AsiAm\, AsianWeek\, Audrey\, Giant Robot\, Hyphen\, Jade\, KoreAm\, Rice\, Transpacific\, YOLK\, and others. Through magazine publishing\, a vital form of mass media in the 1990s\, Asian Americans editorialized issues central to their lives and depicted themselves in ways that were unimaginable before. Magazine Fever presents stories of Generation X magazines–how they were founded and sustained; how they captured the essence of multiculturalism and Generation X paradigms\, and how they impacted the ways Asian American identity is understood today. \nAbout Melissa Hung \nMelissa Hung is a writer and journalist. She is the founding editor in chief of Hyphen and served in leadership roles at the independent magazine for more than a decade. Melissa writes about immigrant communities\, culture\, food\, disability\, grief\, and more. Her essays and reported stories have appeared in NPR\, Vogue\, Longreads\, and the anthologies Body Language and Disability Intimacy. A 2024 Sewanee Scholar\, she is at work on a collection of creative nonfiction about her mother and inheritance. She grew up in Houston\, Texas\, the eldest child of Chinese immigrants. \nAbout Bernice Yeung \nBernice Yeung is a co-founder and former board member of Hyphen\, and has contributed to Asian American media outlets such as A. Magazine and public radio’s “Pacific Time.” Currently\, she’s the managing editor of the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Before that\, she was a reporter for ProPublica and “Reveal” from The Center for Investigative Reporting. The author of In a Day’s Work: The Fight to End Sexual Violence Against America’s Most Vulnerable Workers\, Bernice’s work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The New York Times and PBS Frontline. She grew up in San Jose\, California\, to immigrants from Hong Kong.

SUMMARY:Nurturing a Positive Racial Identity in Asian American Children (Saturday)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2 hour workshop to learn\, discuss\, and share stories about growing a positive racial identity in Asian American children!\n\n\n**Due to low registration\, Saturday’s workshop is canceled. Please register for Thursday evening’s workshop. \n \nWhat does it look like to raise an Asian American child with a positive racial identity and sense of self? How do I talk about race\, ethnicity\, and nationality? What about racism and microaggressions? \nJoin us for a 2 hour workshop as we explore how to cultivate a positive racial and ethnic identity for Asian American children. Along with learning about children’s racial and ethnic socialization development\, we’ll be sharing stories\, reflecting on our own racial identities\, and using exciting resources from EmbraceRace’s new toolkit on raising Asian American children! \nThis workshop is for any caregiver that plays a meaningful role with an Asian American child or children\, either at home\, in the classroom\, or other spaces. Parents\, guardians\, educators\, and all caregivers welcome. \nThe workshop will be led by Andrea Huang and Maryam Zahid. Andrea identifies as Chinese American and is the Community Building Manager for EmbraceRace\, where she facilitates and oversees classes\, cohorts\, and workshops. Maryam identifies as a South Asian first-generation immigrant and is the Senior Communications Manager for EmbraceRace. \nWe use the term Asian American inclusively\, so that means East Asian Americans\, Southeast Asian Americans\, South Asian Americans\, multiracial / biracial and multiethnic Asian Americans\, and adoptees from Asia. This workshop and toolkit does not focus on children of Pacific Islander heritage or Southwest Asian Americans / Middle Eastern ethnicities\, as their racial identity experiences often differ significantly from Asian American children. \nPricing & Logistics \nThanks to our generous donors\, the participation cost is $100\, with a sliding scale payment option of $50 to $150. If the cost is prohibitive\, please contact us at earlychildhood@embracerace.org for scholarship. Due to the intimate nature of our workshops and discussion involving minors\, we do not record our workshops and do not offer recordings post-session. \n**Registration fees are per participant\, not per family unit. \n**Please note that registration is non-refundable and non-transferable. \n**Certificates of Completion available upon request. \nQuestions? Reach out to us at earlychildhood@embracerace.org.

SUMMARY:Queens Poetry symposium: A Celebration of Asian-American Poetry and Poetics

SUMMARY:De-escalation 101: Finding Your Protest Role
DESCRIPTION:Explore themes of respect and dignity of all people\, intervention vs. self care\, and collective safety when it comes to protests/organizing.\n\n\nDe-escalation 101: Finding Your Protest Role \nJoin us on Thursday\, July 3nd at 5PM PST / 8PM PST! \nIn a time where we’re protesting for justice from a place of love\, we’re asking the question\, “How can our movements open hearts?” when each of us is indispensable…and insufficient \nThere’s a lot to protest about and we need more people empowered to play their role to sustain our movements. You may want to go to a protest or vigil or march but feel scared or unsure on how to show up. Are protests inherently violent? Can nonviolence really create change? What would I do if a counter-protestor starts yelling in my face? How can I be centered when I am face to face with an officer in riot gear? Wherever you are in these questions\, there is a role for you to be part of creating a more just and loving world. \nIn this one hour training\, we will explore the orienting themes of respect and dignity of all people\, intervention vs. self care\, and collective safety when it comes to protests and organizing. \nMeet Our Instructor; Angela Kim is a Visionary Organizing and Kingian Nonviolence facilitator-trainer working towards a world where we have increased capacities to sit with our own and each other’s complexities. Angela stewards community containers where participants can share grief\, practice conflict skills\, and be co-opted into emergence inspired by the erotic\, the intuitive\, the divine\, and the more-than-human.

SUMMARY:A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart by Nishant Batsha
DESCRIPTION:Nishant Batsha’s expansive and poignant novel of love\, radical ambition\, and intellectual rebirth set at the dawn of World War I.\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation with author Nishant Batsha to celebrate his new book\, the extraordinary story of a marriage caught at the intersection of radical politics and everyday life. He’ll be speaking with Executive Director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop Jafreen Uddin\, followed by a signing. \nThis event is co-presented by AAWW. \nPLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come\, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. \nCan’t attend? Order your signed copy (please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). \n\n\n\nAn expansive and poignant novel of love\, radical ambition\, and intellectual rebirth set at the dawn of World War I \nAt a party near Stanford University’s campus in 1917\, Cora Trent\, a graduate student raised in the rugged mining towns of the American West\, meets Indra Mukherjee\, an Indian revolutionary newly arrived in California. Indra is grieving the recent loss of a friend and unsure of the place violence has in the cause of national liberation\, while Cora is seeking a new life that stays true to her aspirations as a writer and an idealist. They spark an instant connection\, and their passionate romance deepens as they attend protests alongside anticolonial dissidents and socialize with eccentric thinkers in Berkeley and Palo Alto. All the while\, Indra awaits orders from a mysterious German spymaster. \nCora and Indra quickly marry\, even as the United States is drawn into the conflict in Europe and wartime patriotism begins to give way to increasing intolerance. When news of arrests threatens their future together\, they are forced to flee to New York City with the hope that they can avoid the attention of the British and American authorities. Trying to find footing in their new life\, Cora and Indra must reckon with divergent ambitions that challenge the foundations of their hasty marriage—and their freedom. \nProfound\, immersive\, tenderly written\, and with finely wrought characters drawn from the forgotten archives of American history\, A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart is an extraordinary story of a marriage caught at the intersection of radical politics and everyday life. \n\n\n\nNishant Batsha is the author of the novel Mother Ocean Father Nation\, named a finalist for a 2023 Lambda Literary Award and listed as one the best books of 2022 by NPR\, among other honors. He lives in Buffalo\, New York\, with his family. \n\n\n\nJafreen Uddin is Executive Director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, a national literary nonprofit dedicated to amplifying Asian and Asian diasporic storytelling. She is the first woman to lead the organization since its founding in 1991. She previously served as Deputy Director of Development for Special Events at PEN America and as Events Manager with the Brennan Center for Justice. Jafreen regularly supports and volunteers her time with a number of arts and social change organizations\, including serving on the Steering Committee for LitNet and as a Literary Council Member for the Brooklyn Book Festival.
