SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Theater: The Latehomecomer: Performance & Book Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:Literature to Life is a performance-based literacy program that presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of American literary classics. Now\, in partnership with NYPL and the World Literature and Arts Festival\, Literature to Life brings The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang to the stage at Bronx Library Center.\n\nThis  memoir is Kao Kalia Yang’s tribute to her remarkable grandmother whose spirit held them all together. Winner of a PEN USA Literary Award for Nonfiction and Minnesota’s Book Award and Readers Choice Award\, it is the first memoir written by a Hmong-American to be published with national distribution. A Hmong written language was not taught or used until the 1950s\, so author Kao Kalia Yang plays a large role in bringing the culture into the realm of literature.\n\n\nThe Story \nTold with the immediacy of the author as a young girl\, born in the Ban Vinai Refugee camp in Thailand\, Kao Kalia arrives in the United States when she is six. The story follows her journey from a quiet\, reticent student struggling to speak English while facing racial discrimination\, to a self-empowered young woman claiming her voice to tell the untold story of her people. \nIn Performance \nAccomplished Hmong actress and traditional Flower Singer\, Gaosong Heu\, brings this powerful\, personal story to life\, with her musical talent and knowledge of Hmong culture. The performance tells a universal story of immigration\, through the specific lens of this ancient culture inextricably bound to the history of the war in Vietnam. \nFree Books: Plus\, pick up a free copy of The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang! Giveaway books will be available while supplies last. All giveaways are first come\, first served and limited to one per person.\nThis event will take place in person.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Symposium on "Healing During Uncertainty: Asian American Mental Health"
DESCRIPTION:This symposium explores how identity\, culture\, history\, and systemic factors shape mental health in Asian communities. \nThe Asian American / Asian Research Institute’s 2025 symposium\, co-organized with NYU Steinhardt\, explores the intersections of identity\, culture\, history\, and systemic factors in shaping mental health experiences within Asian and Asian American communities. Centered around three key themes\, the symposium aims to address both longstanding and emerging challenges while equipping attendees with insights and practical strategies to advance mental health support. \n\n\nBuilding on the spirit of AAARI’s 2004 conference on “Asian American / Asian Studies: Aspects of Social Interaction\,” this event fosters collaboration between mental health professionals\, students\, and early-career practitioners\, while promoting meaningful discussions on policy implications and systemic change. It also reflects on past efforts and paves the way for a more inclusive\, culturally responsive approach to mental health\, benefiting both current and future generations. Despite challenges in institutionalizing Asian American studies\, CUNY has been a hub for vibrant activism and creative interventions to support AAPI students and communities. \nBy bridging research\, clinical practice\, and community engagement\, the symposium will address race-based trauma and foster partnerships to drive impactful change\, with workshops\, discussions\, and advocacy efforts aimed at advancing AAPI mental health across clinical\, organizational\, and policy levels. Join us for a day of reflection\, connection\, and action to shape the future of mental health within Asian and Asian American communities. \nThemes: \n\nYouth Mental Health: Addressing the mental health needs of Asian and Asian American youth\, with particular attention to cultural expectations and identity development.\nIdentities and Belonging: Exploring how diverse identities shape mental health experiences\, resilience\, and belonging within Asian and Asian American communities by navigating multiple identities\, challenging stereotypes\, and finding affirmation within their communities.\nMigration and Mental Health: Investigating the mental health impacts of migration\, acculturation\, and the challenges of navigating new environments.\n\nLuncheon Keynote Speaker: \n\nMimi Khúc\, Writer\, Scholar\, and Co-Editor of The Asian American Literary Review\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora on Displacement\, Creativity\, & Otherness
DESCRIPTION:Fifty years since the Fall of Saigon\, writers examine the legacies of displacement and creativity that have shaped the Vietnamese diaspora.\n\n\nDVAN\, the Creative Writing MFA Program at the New School\, Poets & Writers\, and The Brooklyn Rail\, with support from the Authors’ Guild and AAWW\, present Viet Thanh Nguyen with Cathy Linh Che\, Lan Duong\, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud\, and Monique Truong. \nFifty years since the Fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War\, our panel will discuss two new books about the legacies of displacement and creativity that have profoundly shaped Vietnamese communities worldwide. The Cleaving is an unprecedented collection edited by Pelaud\, Duong\, and Nguyen\, featuring 37 Vietnamese writers on their complex ties to their homeland. To Save and To Destroy: Writing As An Other is a deeply personal and analytical meditation by Viet Thanh Nguyen on the role of literature in shaping solidarity and addressing historical wounds. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: \n\nThis event is mixed seated/standing. Seating is limited and will be first come\, first served.\nRSVP is encouraged but not required.\nDoors open at 6 pm.\nCan’t attend? Order your signed copy of The Cleaving or To Save and to Destroy (please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout).\n\n\n\n\nViet Thanh Nguyen is the author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Sympathizer and of Nothing Ever Dies\, a finalist for the National Book Award. A recipient of the MacArthur Foundation and Guggenheim fellowships and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, Nguyen is Aerol Arnold Chair of English and Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He is the first Asian American member of the Pulitzer Prize Board. Born in Vietnam\, Nguyen arrived in the United States as a child refugee with his parents and grew up in San Jose\, CA\, where his family opened the city’s second Vietnamese grocery store. He lives in Pasadena\, CA. His most revent book is TO SAVE AND TO DESTROY: Writing as an other. \n\n\nCathy Linh Che is a writer and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of Becoming Ghost (Washington Square Press\, 2025)\, Split (Alice James Books) and co-author\, with Kyle Lucia Wu\, of the children’s book An Asian American A to Z: a Children’s Guide to Our History (Haymarket Books). Her video installation Appocalips is an Open Call commission with The Shed NY\, and her film We Were the Scenery won the Short Film Jury Award: Nonfiction at the Sundance Film Festival. \n\n\nLan Duong is Associate Professor in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Treacherous Subjects: Gender\, Culture\, and Trans-Vietnamese Feminism\, coeditor of Troubling Borders: Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora\, and cowriter of Departures: An Introduction. Dr. Duong’s second book project\, Transnational Vietnamese Cinemas and the Archives of Memory\, examines Vietnamese films across history and across several institutional and community-oriented sites. Her book of poems\, Nothing Follows\, was published by Texas Tech University Press in 2023. She is a founding member of the Critical Refugee Studies Collective. \n\n\nIsabelle Thuy Pelaud is a professor at SF State University interested in the role of race and war in shaping identity and cultural productions. She wrote the very first book on Vietnamese American literature titled This Is All I Choose To Tell: History and Hybridity in Vietnamese American Literature and co-edited the award winning book Troubling Borders: An Anthology of Art and Literature by Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora. After growing up in France\, she moved to the United States where she earned her doctorate from UC Berkeley and spent her career identifying the unique barriers facing Vietnamese American writers prior and after writing a book. Her academic work has been featured in The Cambridge History of Asian American Literature\, Themes in Contemporary North American Fiction\, Journal of Asian American Studies\, The Asian American Literary Review\, Amerasia Journal\, and Michigan Quarterly Review. She is now working on her creative writing. \nAs an Ethnic Studies Scholar\, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud devoted her life to rectifying the systemic and cultural barriers she identified in her scholarships. To this aim\, she co-founded with Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen a non-profit organization called the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN.org). For almost two decades Nguyen and Pelaud created\, through this organization\, opportunities for diasporic Vietnamese writers to be nurtured and empowered\, and for their work to be more visible. In three years for exemple\, they helped publish 18 books. Their last book The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora that they co-edited with Lan Duong is the direct result of their activist and academic works. This collection of dialogues shows with utmost clarity that their fight is absolutely needed and is highly relevant to American culture. \n\n\nBorn in Saigon\, South Vietnam (now Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam)\, Monique Truong came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975. She’s a novelist\, essayist\, children’s picture book author\, and librettist. Her novels are The Sweetest Fruits (Viking\, 2019)\, Bitter in the Mouth (Random House\, 2010)\, and the national bestseller The Book of Salt (Houghton Mifflin\, 2003). Her children’s picture book Mai’s Áo Dài (Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books\, 2025) is co-written with Thai Nguyen and illustrated by Dung Ho. Along with Barbara Tran and Khoi Luu\, she’s a contributing co-editor of Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry & Prose\, 25th Anniversary Edition (Texas Tech University Press/DVAN Series\, 2023). A graduate of Yale College and Columbia Law School\, she’s a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Princeton University’s Hodder Fellowship\, Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award\, Bard Fiction Prize\, and John Dos Passos Prize for Literature\, among other honors. \n\n\n\nThe first and only book to gather the voices and perspectives of Vietnamese diasporic authors from across the globe. \nEdited by Isabelle Thuy Pelaud\, Lan P. Duong\, and Pulitzer Prize–winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen\, The Cleaving brings together Vietnamese artists and writers from around the world in conversation about their craft and how their work has been shaped and received by mainstream culture and their own communities. This collection highlights how Vietnamese diasporic writers speak about having been cleaved—a condition in which they have been separated from\, yet still hew to\, the country that they have left behind. \nComposed of eighteen dialogues among thirty-seven writers from France\, Indonesia\, Kyrgyzstan\, Canada\, Australia\, Israel\, and the United States\, the book expands on the many lives that Vietnamese writers inhabit. The dialogues touch on family history\, legacies of colonialism and militarism\, and the writers’ own artistic and literary achievements. Taken together\, these conversations insist on a deeper reckoning with the conditions of displacement. \nFeatured writers: Hoai Huong Aubert-Nguyen\, Amy Quan Barry\, Doan Bui\, Thi Bui\, Lan Cao\, Cathy Linh Che\, André Dao\, Duy Đoàn\, Lan P. Duong\, Dương Vân Mai Elliott\, Le Ly Hayslip\, Matt Huynh\, Violet Kupersmith\, Thanhhà Lại\, Vincent Lam\, T.K. Pham\, Aimee Phan\, Abbigail Nguyen Rosewood\, Bao Phi\, Dao Strom\, Kim Thúy\, Paul Tran\, Monique Truong\, Minh Huynh Vu\, Ocean Vuong \n\n\n\nFrom the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Sympathizer (now an HBO series) comes a moving and unflinchingly personal meditation on the literary forms of otherness and a bold call for expansive political solidarity. \nBorn in war-ravaged Vietnam\, Viet Nguyen arrived in the United States as a child refugee in 1975. The Nguyen family would soon move to San Jose\, California\, where the author grew up\, attending UC Berkeley in the aftermath of the shocking murder of Vincent Chin\, which shaped the political sensibilities of a new generation of Asian Americans. \nThe essays here\, delivered originally as the prestigious Norton Lectures\, proffer a new answer to a classic literary question: What does the outsider mean to literary writing? Over the course of six captivating and moving chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial. \nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen’s craft and weaves in the haunting story of his late mother’s mental illness. Nguyen unfolds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\, Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, until aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and politics. What is a writer’s responsibility in a time of violence? Should we celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless—or do we confront the forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the burdens and pleasures of the “minor” writer in any society? Unsatisfied with the modest inclusion accorded to “model minorities” such as Asian Americans\, Nguyen sets the agenda for a more radical and disquieting solidarity with those whose lives have been devastated by imperialism and forever wars. \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Arts Writing concentration of The New School’s MFA Creative Writing Program. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is funded in part by Poets & Writers through public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council.

SUMMARY:Discovery within Tradition: Kimono\, Dance and Music
DESCRIPTION:Japan Performing Arts\, Inc. has been producing “Discovery within Traditions: Kimono\, Dance & Music” as one of our continuing series of Free\n\n\nFor this season (Spring 2025)\, we are featuring “Aizome” dye and “Washi” paper culture from Tokushima Prefecture\, the home of Awa Odori dance. \nNote: \nJPA’s “Discovery within Traditions: Kimono\, Dance & Music – Spring 2025” is our annual Free Public Program. There will be 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm shows (i.e twice on the show date). \nThe doors open at 2:40pm (for the 3pm show) and at 6:10pm (for the 6:30pm show) \nIn order to ensure the seat availability (the theater capacity is limited up to160seats)\, please make sure to make your booking via Eventbrite. Without a booking\, you may not be able to enter the theater. The seats are going to be assigned by first-come\, first-served basis\, so with your booking\, we recommend you to come to the theater early. \nThe show is roughly divided into the parts of: Nihon Buyo\, Kimono Culture\, and Awa Odori. Each has its core cultural values that are important in Japanese culture. The show will explain such essential details. \n\n\n\n\nFor Nihon Buyo\, classical dance pieces of “Seigaiha\,” “Kanda Matsuri\,” and “Ayame Yukata” will be shown together with the explanations of subtle movements of the female dancers in “Ohikizuri” costume. Nihon Buyo is a very unique dance. One of the reasons is the costume of Kimono. If without the costume\, the movements and the dance form could look extremely ridiculous or unnatural. JPA has been aiming to explain such Nihon Buyo details as much as possible. \n  \n\n\n\nFrom about three years ago\, JPA has been giving spotlight on one of the characteristics of kimono costume\, which we have been calling as “Kimono: Tradition of Sustainable Fashion” explaining the eco-friendly aspects of Kimono culture. Many amazing hand-craftsmanship techniques are involved in the art of Kimono. JPA has been paying attention to the lack of succession issues for such craftsmanship in Japan\, so our activities include the introduction of these impressive traditional techniques. At this show\, we will introduce Tokushima Prefecture’s proud “Japan Blue” color “Aizome” dye and “Washi” paper also from Tokushima. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTokushima Prefecture has one of the largest dance festivals in Japan: “Awa Odori.” It is not simply a dance for a festival\, but it is one of the “Bon Odori” dances that are rooted in a Buddhist ritual in the mid-summer season all over Japan. There are “Bon Odori” dances that are commonly danced all over Japan as well as ones very specific from the localities. “Awa Odori” is one of the very unique dances from Tokushima Prefecture. \n  \n\n\nWe’re thrilled to share that Nodoka Yamamura\, a contemporary washi artist born in Tokyo and now based in Tokushima\, will be exhibiting her beautiful works – featuring AIZOME (Indigo)\, SAKURA (Cherry Blossoms)\, and her signature “NODOKA” patterns – outside the venue entrance. Artworks will be available for purchase. She will also be performing in the Awa Odori dance during the event-don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience her artistry in both visual and performance forms! \n\n\n\nThis is a two-our show. There will be a desk at the first floor of Symphony Space theater. Please show your booking confirmation at the desk and enter Leonard Nimoy Theater downstairs. \nSee you at the theater!!
