SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries.\n\nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.\n\n\nLegacies features works – paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and new media\, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history\, cultural studies\, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation\, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities\, political horizons\, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.\n\nIn addition to aesthetic concerns such as figuration\, abstraction and materiality\, the exhibition tracks how these artists addressed migration\, displacement\, racism\, cultural autonomy\, Western imperialism\, societal violence\, and representations of sexuality and gender through the decades.\n\nLegacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.\n\nThe exhibition also features newly commissioned installations\, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film\, Fresh Kill (1994).\n\nFilmmaker Rea Tajiri presents an assemblage sculpture that expands on her groundbreaking History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige (1991)\, a meditation on her family history and Japanese and Japanese American internment during World War II.\n\nOrganized by Howie Chen\, Curator at 80WSE\, Jayne Cole Southard\, PhD.\, CUNY\, and christina ong\, PhD. \n \nProduced by Jon Huron\, 80WSE.  Gini Yu Pei Lee\, Curatorial Assistant. Gracia Brown and Daniella Occhineri\, Research Assistants. Kate Edelson\, Exhibition Registrar.\n \nThe exhibition’s presentation is made possible by Teiger Foundation.  \n\nSpecial thanks for the support of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, Squid Frames\, CHENZO.STUDIO\, and Fales Library and Special Collections. Equipment provided in part by Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.\n\n\nImage credit:  Bridge Magazine Vol. 1 No. 6. New York: Basement Workshop\, 1972

SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Who is in our corner when we need help?\nWho do we call on when we are down?\nWho backs us up when we are cornered?\nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Through interviews and writings from the artists\, In Our Corner highlights these bonds and explores how artist collectives/organizations intersected and fostered connections. \nNovember 16\, 2024 – March 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, November 16\, 2024\, 3-5PM \nThink!Chinatown’s Studio – 1 Pike Street\, New York\, NY 10002 \nPhoto Credit “Untitled” by Sepp Seitz

SUMMARY:YELLOW: An Open Mic Centering Asian Voices
DESCRIPTION:YELLOW is a monthly open mic centering Asian voices. Zoom TBA.\n\n\n“In the West\, yellow’s unsavory status went back centuries…The color grew to represent envy\, jealousy…duplicity…and cowardice. \nYellow was a contemptible color in the Western imagination\, and it fit snugly with the Western idea of the Oriental human being\, especially as he became a threat first to the American workingman\, then to the chaste American woman\, and finally to Western civilization itself. \n– Excerpts from “Big Little Man” by Alex Tizon \n  \nFor Asians\, yellow represents soil & earth\, life\, resistance\, courage\, rebirth\, revolution\, & unity. \nWe are reclaiming and rewriting all narratives that undermine the richness and complexity of Asian individuals\, cultures\, traditions\, & longing. Join us in amplifying and celebrating Asian heritage with song\, dance\, poetry\, performance\, & discourse. \nFor a peek into the power & creativity of some of our Asian artists\, delight in our gift bag from CommemorASIAN: Shame is Not Ours to Keep (performances are marked in the caption). \nThere is no need to sign up to perform. Anyone can perform as long as they are amplifying Asian voices\, artists\, & experiences. SUMMARY:Music: ZHU at Terminal 5
DESCRIPTION:EMW Presents: ZHU @ Terminal 5! Zhu will perform a 2 Hour Ball Drop set with support by Maahez\, One True God\, SOHMI. Ring in 2025 with an optional VIP 3-hour open bar 10PM – 1AM. With his sleek synth melodies\, billowing basslines\, and undeniable hooks\, the GRAMMY-nominated artist ZHU creates tracks that are as sexy as they are sinister. Though many know ZHU as a producer and DJ\, he’s much more than that: he’s also a singer\, performer\, instrumentalist\, and\, importantly\, a songwriter and filmmaker\, two facets he delves into for his ambitious new album and film GRACE. ZHU first made his presence known to the world with his 2014 single\, “Faded\,” which was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 2015 Grammy Awards. He stamped his spot with his genre-blurring 2016 debut\, GENERATIONWHY. He only continued to evolve with subsequent projects like RINGOS DESERT (2018)\, DREAMLAND 2021 (2021)\, Musical Chairs Mixtape (Vol. 1) (2022) and Days Before Grace EP (2023)\, a prologue to Grace.

SUMMARY:MOCACREATE: Dream Big! Vision Boards with Teaching Artist Yu Rong
DESCRIPTION:Start the new year off right by designing a personalized vision board! \nStart the new year off right by designing a personalized vision board! Magazine designers use vision boards to find the perfect look and feel for their magazine— something that is visually appealing\, draws readers in\, and reflects the content of the articles. We can use our vision boards to envision our goals and dreams for the year ahead. What color palette embodies your hopes for 2025? What words can motivate you? What new things do you want to try? Whether you want to master new recipes\, excel in a sport\, or read a record number of books\, a vision board can keep you on track and inspired. \nPaint\, build\, craft\, and collage with us! Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists\, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month. MOCACREATE workshops are designed with families in mind\, but all are welcome! \nFREE! RSVP optional\, but appreciated. \nYu Rong is a painter and product designer. She was born in Sichuan and currently lives in New York City\, where she is a teaching artist at the Hope Garden Center and at MOCA. She received her BFA in Product Design and MFA in Painting at Parsons School of Design and NYSS\, but has been practicing art ever since she was a child. SUMMARY:MOCA PRESENTS - Threads of Home\, A Participatory Theatre Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Explore “home” during Lunar New Year in Threads of Home\, an immersive theater workshop with personal reflections.\n\n\nDuring the Lunar New Year\, family reunions can be moments we eagerly anticipate—or seek to avoid. The concepts of “family” and “home” mean vastly different things to each of us. How do we then celebrate the Lunar New Year? What might a reunion dinner look like? Director Zhenyu Meng (PhD in Theatre and Film Studies from the Shanghai Theatre Academy) collaborates with SpArkling Theatre Studio to present New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Gene Frankel Theatre from January 17 to 19. \nThe Museum of Chinese in America is delighted to host Director Zhenyu Meng and the production team for a participatory theater workshop\, Threads of Home. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to glimpse the creative process behind the production\, using Chekhov’s acting techniques. Participants will step into the floor plan of a typical northern Chinese household and reflect on their personal experiences. Through guided theatrical activities\, participants will engage in an immersive exploration of “home\,” where every detail — from props to dialogue to imagined memories — carries intentional meaning. This workshop is open to general public and will be conducted in English. \n  \nABOUT Zhenyu Meng \nZhenyu Meng is a performance instructor\, theatre director\, and PhD candidate in Theatre and Film Studies at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. A researcher and practitioner of the Michael Chekhov Technique. She is temporarily based at the CUNY Graduate Center doing acting training method research. Her directorial works include Requiem\, The Blue Bird\, Forever Young\, To Be Or Not To Be\, and Classic of Mountains and Seas\, among others. Frequently featured in the Shanghai International Arts Festival. \nABOUT SpArkling Theatre Studio \nFounded in January 2024 by Annora Dong (董语柔) and Sophia Zhu (朱婕宁)\, SpArkling Theatre Studio was born from the creative synergy and unique resonance between their distinct artistic sensibilities. The two founders first met at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Experimental Theatre Wing. Drawing inspiration and creative energy from diverse places such as New York and Shanghai\, SpArkling is dedicated to illuminating people and the world through avant-garde experimental theatre and physical theatre forms. The studio’s core mission is to transcend cultural boundaries through art\, fostering profound human connections and advancing cross-cultural artistic exchange on the international stage. \nABOUT New Year’s Eve Dinner \nOn New Year’s Eve\, an ordinary northern Chinese family gathers to welcome the arrival of the New Year. Yet\, what lingers in the air is not celebration\, but unspoken tension and heavy silence. The story unfolds within the close quarters of a cramped two-bedroom apartment\, where every piece of furniture and every crack in the walls\, bears the weight of lingering emotions and unresolved conflicts that bind and divide the family. The show will be bilingual in both Mandarin Chinese and English with a corresponding introduction and explanation of each scene. The story is depicted through visual pictures. Audiences with all backgrounds and cultures are welcome. \nFor show information\, please visit: http://www.genefrankeltheatre.com/now-playing.html

But how can Ba Noi know what Mai’s wearing when Ba Noi is losing her eyesight?
