SUMMARY:Making or Faking Chinatown? Representing People\, Place and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Illustration by John Lee \nOn view July 18–October 2024\, Think!Chinatown is proud to present Making or Faking Chinatown? Representing People\, Place and Culture\, a thought-provoking urban planning-focused exhibition exploring the unresolved debate of cultural representation in Chinatown’s built environment through extensive research\, photographs from Chinatowns across North America\, and artwork by artist John Lee. The exhibition is co-curated by T!C Director Yin Kong and architectural historian Kerri Culhane\, and designed with fwd | A+U\, Farzana Gandhi Design Studio\, and Pentagram as part of Van Alen Institute’s program Design Sprints. \nIn 2024\, the NYC Economic Development Corporation launched the Chinatown Connections project which includes the redesign of Kimlau Square and creation of a “Chinatown Welcome Gateway”. This city project has reignited the conversation about cultural representation. In Chinatowns around the world\, gateways\, known as paifang–along with lanterns\, dragons and the ubiquitous color red–present a generic notion of Chinese culture for public consumption. Are these stereotypes or symbols of Chinatown? This exhibition explores the range of placekeeping and placemaking strategies in Chinatowns\, from everyday life to the staged production of culture. \nGallery hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays\, 3-6PM Chinatown!Studio (1 Pike St).

SUMMARY:See What I Wanna See
DESCRIPTION:“See What I Wanna See”\, a musical by Michael John LaChiusa\, is based on three short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. The story unfolds like a classical Japanese screen painting\, opening each act with a prologue inspired by Kesa and Morito\, a pair of fatally contentious lovers. The first act\, set in 1951\, follows a murder in Central Park from contradicting perspectives where everyone’s truth may be a lie. Act two centers on a priest in 2002\, wavering in his faith and creating a hoax about a miracle. His ruse attracts attention; however\, the result is something he hadn’t bargained for. \nOOTB’s production of “See What I Wanna See” features an all-AAPI cast of actors and elements inspired by traditional Asian theater practices\, bringing LaChiusa’s Americanized adaptation into conversation with the Asian-American experience. \nWords and music by Michael John LaChiusa \nDirected by Emilio Ramos\nMusic Direction by Adam Rothenberg\nChoreographed by Paul McGill \nPerformance Times: Vary by date \n

SUMMARY:The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Dan Lie\, Memory Stick ou Pau de Memória\, 2015. (Image: Edouard Fraipont) \nThe Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the region from the 1940s to the present. Focusing on postwar and contemporary art\, the exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists from fourteen countries working in a range of artistic mediums including painting\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, and video\, to shed light into strategies and themes that resonate across a wide array of Asian diasporic practice throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. \nThe exhibition embraces and performs the multiple and interrelated meanings embedded in the notion of appearance\, inspired by Japanese Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura’s 1975 print by the same title. From acts of appearing and becoming visible—including different types of apparitions—to the idea of impressions and physical resemblance\, artists in the show grapple with the complexities of negotiating (in)visibility\, revisiting and remaking family archives and stories\, and engaging and reconfiguring spiritual practices. The show also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy linked to language\, the senses\, and the body in the context of the Americas’ postwar art. \nConceived as an appearance in and of itself\, the show sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences and artistic trajectories of Asian diasporic subjects and collectives across Latin America and the Caribbean\, casting them as both grounded in their particular context and constitutive of broader transnational histories. \nTo accompany the show\, we will present a series of public programs and publish a catalogue. \nThis exhibition is co-curated by Tie Jojima\, associate curator and manager of Exhibitions at Americas Society in New York\, and Yudi Rafael\, independent curator and researcher based in São Paulo\, Brazil.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries.\n\nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.\n\n\nLegacies features works – paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and new media\, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history\, cultural studies\, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation\, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities\, political horizons\, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.\n\nIn addition to aesthetic concerns such as figuration\, abstraction and materiality\, the exhibition tracks how these artists addressed migration\, displacement\, racism\, cultural autonomy\, Western imperialism\, societal violence\, and representations of sexuality and gender through the decades.\n\nLegacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.\n\nThe exhibition also features newly commissioned installations\, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film\, Fresh Kill (1994).\n\nFilmmaker Rea Tajiri presents an assemblage sculpture that expands on her groundbreaking History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige (1991)\, a meditation on her family history and Japanese and Japanese American internment during World War II.\n\nOrganized by Howie Chen\, Curator at 80WSE\, Jayne Cole Southard\, PhD.\, CUNY\, and christina ong\, PhD. \n \nProduced by Jon Huron\, 80WSE.  Gini Yu Pei Lee\, Curatorial Assistant. Gracia Brown and Daniella Occhineri\, Research Assistants. Kate Edelson\, Exhibition Registrar.\n \nThe exhibition’s presentation is made possible by Teiger Foundation.  \n\nSpecial thanks for the support of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, Squid Frames\, CHENZO.STUDIO\, and Fales Library and Special Collections. Equipment provided in part by Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.\n\n\nImage credit:  Bridge Magazine Vol. 1 No. 6. New York: Basement Workshop\, 1972

SUMMARY:Broadway: Yellow Face
DESCRIPTION:Discount 30% off with code: AANHPI \nTony Award® winner and three-time Pulitzer finalist David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will make his Roundabout debut with the Broadway premiere of Yellow Face\, his hilarious is-he-or-isn’t-he comedy of identity\, show business\, and (perhaps) autobiography. Starring Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet).  \nInspired by real events\, the playwright’s fictionalized doppelgänger protests yellowface casting in Miss Saigon\, only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his own play. This Obie Award-winning and Pulitzer finalist play is a laugh-out-loud farce about the complexities of race.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of Emerging South Asian Short Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of short story collections by Aruni Kashyap and Puloma Ghosh\, in conversation with writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Aruni Kashyap’s short story collection The Way You Want to Be Loved and Puloma Ghosh’s short story collection Mouth! Aruni and Puloma will be joined by writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim\, who will moderate their conversation following their readings. \nAbout Mouth \nIn this debut collection\, Puloma Ghosh spins tales of creatures and gore to explore grief\, sexuality\, and bodily autonomy. Embracing the bizarre and absurd\, Mouth stretches reality to reach for truth. \n“Desiccation” follows a teen figure skater with necrophiliac fantasies who is convinced the other Indian girl at the rink is a vampire. When a woman returns to Kolkata in “The Fig Tree\,” she can’t tell if she is haunted by her dead mother or a shakchunni — or both. “Nip” bottles up the consuming and addictive nature of infatuation\, while “Natalya” is a hair-raising autopsy of an ex-lover. In “Persimmons\,” a girl comes to terms with her own community sacrifice. \nFull of fangs and talons\, Mouth lays bare the otherwise awkward and unmentionable with a singular sharpness. Through surreal and captivating prose\, Puloma Ghosh delves into otherworldly spaces to reimagine ordinary struggles of isolation\, longing\, and the aching desires of our flesh. \nAbout The Way You Want to Be Loved \nIn agile and frank prose\, The Way You Want to Be Loved tells the stories of queer\, displaced lives from India’s Northeast\, an underrepresented region in English fiction. A hybrid cast of characters represents the common people in these thirteen stories\, whether western-trained academic or village sorcerer\, army soldier or local politician\, homeward-bound son or dutiful daughter-in-law. They wrestle with diasporic melancholia\, the social pressures of familial duty\, and the search for their own personhood\, even as they live in a world where personhood is continually compromised and reshaped under oppressive forces larger than themselves. Aruni Kashyap offers up a powerful critique of the malfunctioning democracies of India and the US\, deftly balancing devastation and tragedy with a darkly humorous tone that has readers questioning their laughter. \nAt its core\, The Way You Want to Be Loved explores what it means to love\, desire\, and long for life under the duress of everyday and state-sanctioned violence and discrimination. \n__ \nAruni Kashyap is the author of The Way You Want to be Loved (Gaudy Boy 2024)\, the novels The House With a Thousand Stories (Penguin 2013)\, and How to Date a Fanatic (Harper Via 2026) . Along with editing a collection of stories called How to Tell the Story of an Insurgency\, he translated two novels from Assamese to English\, published by Zubaan Books and Penguin Random House. Recipient of a Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship\, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, the Faculty Research Grants in the Humanities and Arts Program\, the Arts Lab Faculty Fellowship\, and the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing to the University of Edinburgh\, his poetry collection\, There is No Good Time for Bad News\, was nominated for the 58th Georgia Author of the Year Awards 2022\, a finalist for the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize\, and the Four Way Books Levis Award in Poetry. His translations have been nominated for the Armory Square Prize for South Asian Literature in Translation 2023 and VOW Book Awards 2024. He also writes in Assamese and is the author of a novel called Noikhon Etia Duroit and three novellas. He is an Associate Professor of English & Creative Writing and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Georgia\, Athens. \nPuloma Ghosh is a fiction writer based in Chicago whose work has appeared in One Story\, CRAFT Literary\, Cutleaf\, and other publications. SUMMARY:The Role of Art & Cultural Organizing in Justice Movements
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore how art and cultural organizing play a crucial role in driving forward justice movements!\n\n\nThe Role of Art & Cultural Organizing in Justice Movements \nArts and cultural organizing have played central roles in our justice movements. For many artists and cultural workers art serves as a spark to ignite action\, counter erasure\, challenge invisibility and counter dominant narratives while shaping a future. Art offers a place for healing\, visioning and a space for radical imagination that is critical during times of great despair. During this webinar\, artists and cultural workers will be discussing the role of art and culture work for our social justice movements during a time of crisis/genocide. \nAbout the speakers: \nArshia Fatima Haq (born in Hyderabad\, India) works across film\, visual art\, performance\, and sound\, through counter-archives and speculative narratives\, and is currently exploring themes of indigenous and localized knowledge within the context of Sufism. Her projects have been presented nationally and internationally at museums\, galleries\, nightclubs\, and in the streets\, and have been featured at the Broad Museum\, LA; LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions); the Hammer Museum\, LA; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Tucson; Station Museum of Contemporary Art\, Houston; Onassis Stegi\, Athens; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris; Pacific Film Archive\, Berkeley; Toronto International Film Festival; and NPR; among others. Haq is the founder of Discostan\, a collaborative club-based project\, radio show and record label drawing from the cultural production of South and West Asia and North Africa and their diasporas. She has produced radio programming for Dublab and KCRW and currently hosts and produces a monthly radio show on NTS. Haq received an MFA in Film and Video from California Institute of the Arts. \nRekoil Chafe Born in Vikhroli\, Rekoil Chafe is one of the “OG” Lyricist and Music Producers of Mumbai’s Hip-hop scene and has been making music for almost a decade now. Rapping in English\, Hindi & Marathi\, his music features lived experiences\, abstract and metaphorical concepts\, and assertion of his identity as an Ambedkarite Buddhist—often addressing issues that his community\, independent artists and freelancers face through bars\, schemes and satirical bits. An ex-core member of a Thane based organisation “The Hip-Hop Movement” (THHM)\, Rekoil contributed to the planning and organizing first of many Hip-Hop events in the blooming stage of the Indian Hip-Hop circuit. He has produced for several Indian Hip Hop Favourites including producing & engineering singles for MTV Hustle Fame Gravity\, Shah Rule from Gully Gang & Gully Boy Movie roster\, Farhan Khan\, Kidshot\, Kr$na and many more. \nSeema Hari is a non-binary engineer\, multihyphenate artist\, producer and activist focused on annihilating colorism\, casteism and queerphobia through their work. They co-produced the internationally acclaimed short film ‘Sheer Qorma’ with director Faraz Arif Ansari\, which has traveled to over 250 film festivals and won 76 awards – including awards at the prestigious BAFTA Qualifying FRAMELINE Film Festival (San Francisco)\, the Academy Award qualifying Out on Film (Atlanta). They also co-created and acted in ‘Closer’\, a musical short film made with musician Khanvict and director Anjali Nayar which won the ‘Prism Prize’ Audience award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. They have acted in various music videos for international acts like Young The Giant\, Sunny Jain\, Love Fame Tragedy\, Racquel Jones etc. and in the feature film Anxious which will be releasing soon.Seema also DJs focusing on blending south asian sounds and rhythms into music from around the world. They have played at festivals internationally and love bringing people together through the unifying power of music and dance. \nKey questions we will discuss: \nIn what ways do art and cultural work play a critical role in our social justice movement work? \nWhat are examples of ways art and culture work connects us to legacies of healing and liberation that preserve traditions that are invisiblized or lost? \nWhat ways do art and culture counter dominant narratives? \nIn what ways does art and culture work serve as a catalyst to action? \nWhat is the artists role in a time of genocide? \n \nNote: While this event is free to the general public\, we encourage those from caste privileged backgrounds to donate to our caste equity work.
