SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. See Selected Works in the Exhibition to preview some of these important gifts.

SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

SUMMARY:Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asia Society’s seventieth anniversary\, Asia Society Museum presents Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Celebrating 70 Years of Asia Society and the Rockefeller Legacy. \nDisplaying seventy of the finest examples of Asian art in the United States drawn from Asia Society’s permanent collection\, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of bronzes\, ceramics\, and metalwork thoughtfully assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s by John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906-1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909-1992). John D. Rockefeller 3rd founded Asia Society in 1956 with the mission to promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States; the bequest of the collection to Asia Society in 1979 underscores the Rockefellers’ conviction that an aesthetic encounter with great works of art promotes deep cross-cultural understanding. \nWith highlights including spectacular Buddhist and Hindu sculptures\, and rare Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese ceramics\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon celebrates historic achievements in Asian art spanning more than two millennia. The exhibition foregrounds the transformative power of faith and the catalyzing potential of international trade in the creation of great works of art across Asia. \nBuddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon presents a special opportunity for museum visitors to experience the unparalleled quality of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Thrid Collection at its home at Asia Society Museum in New York City.

SUMMARY:Shu Lea Cheang\, LOVER LOVE
DESCRIPTION:LOVER LOVE\, a new commission for the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art by Shu Lea Cheang\, begins with a portal. A window is flung open and the gray wall of an apartment block dissolves into a turbulent\, overcast sky\, against which a smoky being is enveloped by a six-winged seraphim—an angel of the highest order. \nThis opening transition is both a gesture to Cheang’s longtime collaborator\, musician Aérea Negrot (1980–2023)\, who died by suicide\, and a marker of an entry into a hybrid space of documentation and imagination. For this film\, presented as a four-channel installation\, Cheang worked with eight intergenerational performers in Tucson\, Arizona\, all of whom contributed their own experiences\, narratives\, and dreams of and for trans and gender nonconforming life in today’s United States. \nThis collaboratively scripted film moves between physical and virtual space: between performances in a motel room\, a junkyard\, and city streets amid surrounding nature\, we can see desert plants blooming anthropomorphic appendages and souls escaping inhuman oppression to take transhuman flight. \nThe gallery’s four screens\, themselves portals to the film’s world\, can be shifted by viewers into and out of the path of each projector. Each movement triggers a segment of Negrot’s 2011 track “It’s Lover\, Love”—a dreamy\, minimalist meditation on the lingering traces of broken promises and vanished love. These aural and physical shifts create new compositions\, morphing the installation into an active landscape in which to navigate agency\, survival\, and intimacy in a time of escalating political precarity.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Siyan Wong: Make It 10 Cents
DESCRIPTION:Make it 10 Cents is a painting exhibition to raise awareness and to support a one-day pop-up redemption on May 26th in Chinatown. This pop-up simulates the passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill by redeeming all materials at the 10-cent rate. \nSiyan Wong’s paintings depict elderly low wage workers who collect cans to survive. Each of her social realist paintings\, in vibrant colors\, captures a fleeting moment that exudes the human experience of living – depicting lives whose efflorescence is held back by the politics of their days. Together\, they show the human spirit always venturing toward a better life. \nThrough these paintings\, she gives visibility to the work of the historically marginalized\, and puts a spotlight on the cans and bottles that end up in costly landfills that devastate our environment. The individuals appearing in her paintings are elderly Chinese immigrants in Chinatown and the Lower East Side who worked in garment factories\, restaurants\, and homecare before turning to rummaging for cans and bottles on the streets. \nWong states that\, “Art is only as powerful as the inspiration for actions that comes from it. ‘Make It 10 Cents’ is an art exhibition about doing right by our vulnerable population of elderly and working poor\, and to protect our environment that is experiencing rapid\, severe degradation driven in part by failure in policies.” \nLocation: Welcome to Chinatown\nRegular Hours: Monday to Friday: 10:00AM – 6:00PM\nDuration: April 14 – May 29\, 2026

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Michael Luo with Qian Julie Wang | Strangers in the Land: Exclusion\, Belonging\, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Author and journalist Michael Luo sits down to discuss his lauded narrative history Strangers in the Land: Exclusion\, Belonging\, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America with best-selling author and civil rights lawyer Qian Julie Wang. \nThis event will take place in person and online at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor. \nIn Strangers in the Land\, award-winning journalist Michael Luo tells the story of a people who\, beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century\, migrated by the tens of thousands to a distant land they called Gum Shan––Gold Mountain. Americans initially welcomed these Chinese arrivals\, but\, as their numbers grew\, horrific episodes of racial terror erupted on the Pacific coast. Federal lawmakers enacted legislation aimed at excluding Chinese laborers from the country\, the first time the United States barred a people based on their race. The Chinese became the country’s earliest undocumented immigrants: hounded\, counted\, suspected\, surveilled. \nIn 1889\, while upholding Chinese exclusion\, Supreme Court Justice Stephen J. Field characterized them as “strangers in the land.” Only in 1965 did America’s gates swing open to people like Luo’s parents\, immigrants from Taiwan. Today there are more than twenty-two million people of Asian descent in the United States and yet the “stranger” label\, Luo writes\, remains. Drawing on archives from across the country and written with style and sweep\, Strangers in the Land is a revelatory and unforgettable American story. \nTo join the event in person | Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events\, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance\, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time\, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program. \nTo view the livestream | Whether you’re attending in person or online\, you must register with your email address. You will need a device with audio and/or video and an internet/cellular connection to view the livestream.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Extravagant Camp: The Queer Abjection of Asian America (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eng will discuss his newly released book\, Extravagant Camp: The Queer Abjection of Asian America. He will also be joined in conversation by current CRAASH member and Hunter College student\, Alvi Chowdhury. An audience Q&A and book signing to follow. \nWhat happens when we take the predominantly tragic and heroic narratives of Asian American historical violence and recast them in a queerer\, more irreverent light? Eng contemplates this question by amplifying multiple valences of the term “camp\,” addressing both the camps as biopolitical sites of confinement and the campy as an aesthetic mode of queer expressiveness. The book talk spotlights how campy performances that imaginatively restage canonical scenes of camps throughout Asian American history: Chinese railroad labor\, Japanese American incarceration\, Vietnam War refugee resettlement\, and counterinsurgency camps across US imperial entanglements in the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Mona Tewari in conversation with Chelsea Abdullah for BURN THE SEA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the release of BURN THE SEA by Mona Tewari\, as she is joined in conversation with Chelsea Abdullah.\n\n\nJoin us for the release of BURN THE SEA by Mona Tewari\, as she is joined in conversation with Chelsea Abdullah. Your ticket includes a signed copy of the book. \n** We kindly ask attendees to please avoid wearing scented products (such as perfumes or colognes) as they can trigger Mona’s chronic illness. ** \nBURN THE SEA : \nA lush historical fantasy that reimagines the Portuguese attacks on South India in the 1500s and the fierce real-life queen’s story\, Burn the Sea is an electrifying exaltation of female power and the value of freedom. \nTo protect her homeland\, one queen must fight her people’s historic enemy—once and for all. \nAbbakka Chowta never expected to be queen. The youngest of Ullal’s two rajkumaris\, Abbakka has spent years in rigorous combat training to become her sister’s blade. But when the monstrous Porcugi attempt to lay claim to Ullal\, Abbakka’s world—and fate—are upended. The Porcugi—giant half-men\, half-snakes who attack from the sea—haven’t been seen in Ullal since their failed invasion more than fifty years ago. But now\, they’re back with vengeance and a choice: pay their tithes or suffer total devastation. Soon\, Abbakka’s definitions of strength\, subterfuge\, and statecraft are put to the test. Will marriage to a neighboring king give her the resources she needs to protect her people . . . or will she watch her homeland be crushed beneath the waves of would-be colonizers? \nABOUT MONA TEWARI: \nMona Tewari lives with her husband\, two daughters\, and dogs in thebeautiful Berkshires of New England. After graduating from Caltechwith degrees in biology and philosophy\, she completed dental school\,residency\, and a master’s degree at UCSF. She joined a fantasticpediatric dental practice where she thought she’d be for a long time\,but life had other plans. \nWhen health issues forced her to stop practicing\, Mona turned to writing fiction. She has long been fascinated by the way that narratives create the lens through which we see our legends and histories and how these views shape our present. Plus\, as the daughter of two immigrants from India\, Mona didn’t see herself much in popular media while growing up\, and she is determined to show her daughters that they belong in every world. \nABOUT CHELSEA ABDULLAH: \nChelsea Abdullah is the award-winning author of The Sandsea Trilogy\, an epic fantasy series that begins with The Stardust Thief. An American-Kuwaiti writer born and raised in Kuwait\, she grew up listening to stories about mysterious desert creatures and wily (only sometimes likable) heroes.Consumed by wanderlust\, she has put down roots in various states. After earning her MA in English at Duquesne University\, she moved to the East Coast\, where she currently lives. When not immersed in her own fictional worlds\, she spends her free time playing video games\, doodling characters\, and hoarding books she doesn’t have the shelf space for.

SUMMARY:CryptoAI Summit 2026: The Singularity is Here?
DESCRIPTION:CryptoAI Summit 2026 is the premier forum exploring the strategic convergence of AI and Blockchain\, organized by Bitpush and China Institute of America. In 2026\, as speculation gives way to utility\, we move beyond the noise to examine the AI revolution. The summit dissects global competition\, the recalibration of market valuations\, and the structural tensions between unprecedented efficiency and the systemic “bubbles” of rapid automation. Simultaneously\, the summit deconstructs the maturing Crypto landscape. We analyze the evolution of institutional market cycles and the definitive shift toward real-world adoption and on-chain financial logic. By bridging these two forces\, the summit investigates whether the union of AI and Crypto is a fundamental necessity for decentralized intelligence or a critical alignment for the next era of global digital infrastructure. \nCI members can receive a complimentary ticket with code CIFREE. SUMMARY:Beyond Borders: Highlighting Immigration Stories
DESCRIPTION:New York City\, a city founded by immigrants\, has been shaped and enriched by generations of newcomers across the five boroughs. Each story of immigration is deeply personal and unique; at the same time\, many immigrants share core experiences of settling in a new place. Finding community\, speaking a second language\, navigating institutions and paperwork\, staying connected to culture—these experiences shape the lives of countless people who call the city home. \nThis event brings together authors Karla Cornejo Villavicencio\, Grace M. Cho\, and Ruben Reyes Jr. in conversation with author and journalist Maria Hinojosa to explore modern stories of immigration. They’ll discuss the connections between their work\, navigating the world of publishing\, and how immigrant stories can speak to our moment.

SUMMARY:Moving Objects: Modes of Conveyance & the Making of Global Asias
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU and Pennsylvania State University’s Global Asias Initiative. \nThe Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU and Pennsylvania State University’s Global Asias Initiative are pleased to present “Moving Objects: Modes of Conveyance & the Making of Global Asias\,”  a one-day symposium at NYU and a Convergence feature for a special issue of the journal Verge: Studies in Global Asias. “Moving Objects” examines  the varied modes of conveyance and the material infrastructures that facilitate the movements of people\, cultural objects\, and materials\, by which Global Asias come into existence. \nWhat are the objects\, vehicles\, and vessels of migration\, circulation\, and exchange that connect Asians to one another and to others? What are the platforms and material environments through which Global Asias are built? How do cultural and political representations of such moving objects serve to make diasporic passages possible? How are such passages re-routed with the arrival of new modes and technologies of travel and transit?
