SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980

DESCRIPTION:Buy tickets from $39 using code CR39.\nComing to Roundabout Theatre this winter\, Chinese Republicans is a biting new satirical drama from Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Playwright Alex Lin and Award-Winning Director Chay Yew. \nThree high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs\, as they’ve done for decades. But the group is jolted when Katie\, a bright-eyed 24-year-old new to the workforce\, joins to navigate the world of corporate finance. As each of the women attempts to steer Katie towards what they’re certain is best\, they’re forced to grapple with how much they already have and are willing to sacrifice to climb the corporate ladder. \nShifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern capitalism\, this world premiere production explores themes of assimilation\, intergenerational conflict\, and gender politics in the workplace—all with unflinching wit and empathy. SUMMARY:A Legacy Continued: Recent Acquisitions to the Asia Society Museum Collection
DESCRIPTION:A Legacy Continued features recent acquisitions received from Sandra Ferry Rockefeller and Hope Aldrich in honor of their parents\, John D. Rockefeller 3rd and Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller. These gifts were originally part of Mr. and Mrs. Rockefeller’s personal collection\, and this display celebrates their homecoming. These pieces complement other works within the museum collection\, some of which are included in this exhibition. Together\, they offer greater opportunities for comparative studies among them. \nTwo Chola bronze statues of Hindu deities from Hope Aldrich—a Shiva and a Satyabhama—add to the already magnificent group of Indian Chola bronzes in the collection. From Sandra Ferry\, two lovely gilt bronze Chinese Buddhist statues augment the museum’s existing Chinese Buddhist sculptures\, while the addition of three Thai works furthers the collection’s strength in Southeast Asian sculpture. See Selected Works in the Exhibition to preview some of these important gifts.

SUMMARY:Busy\, Busy Towns: Moving Images of a Changing Asia
DESCRIPTION:This selection of works from the Asia Society Museum Collection explore how rapidly evolving cultural\, political\, and ecological issues have shaped urban landscapes across contemporary Asia\, and in particular China\, Indonesia\, and Taiwan. The exhibition presents seven works featuring the artists Song Dong\, Chen Shaoxiong\, Tromarama\, and Chen Chieh-jen. The innovative range of styles implemented to produce these moving images—through stop-motion animation of woodcuts\, ink painting\, or embroidery—among other methods\, speaks to the creative depth and diversity of the region. The artists explore the dynamic energy of cities\, whether fueled by consumerism and gentrification or by collapsing industries and environmental degradation. Actively reflecting on the regeneration of cityscapes and the subsequent impact on urban lives\, these works initiate a renewed dialogue with the current exhibition\, (Re)Generations: Rina Bannerjee\, Bryon Kim\, and Howardena Pindell amid the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection.

SUMMARY:Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Asia Society’s seventieth anniversary\, Asia Society Museum presents Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Celebrating 70 Years of Asia Society and the Rockefeller Legacy. \nDisplaying seventy of the finest examples of Asian art in the United States drawn from Asia Society’s permanent collection\, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of bronzes\, ceramics\, and metalwork thoughtfully assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s by John D. Rockefeller 3rd (1906-1978) and his wife Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller (1909-1992). John D. Rockefeller 3rd founded Asia Society in 1956 with the mission to promote greater knowledge of Asia in the United States; the bequest of the collection to Asia Society in 1979 underscores the Rockefellers’ conviction that an aesthetic encounter with great works of art promotes deep cross-cultural understanding. \nWith highlights including spectacular Buddhist and Hindu sculptures\, and rare Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese ceramics\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon celebrates historic achievements in Asian art spanning more than two millennia. The exhibition foregrounds the transformative power of faith and the catalyzing potential of international trade in the creation of great works of art across Asia. \nBuddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon presents a special opportunity for museum visitors to experience the unparalleled quality of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Thrid Collection at its home at Asia Society Museum in New York City.

SUMMARY:The DeGrasse Family of New York City (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Prithi Kanakamedala will present on their project examining the life of George DeGrasse and his family\, who lived on land in New York City donated by Aaron Burr in the early nineteenth century. DeGrasse\, listed as being born in Calcutta\, India\, and often claiming to be Burr’s former servant\, becomes the focus of a reevaluation in light of new research suggesting Burr may have had a secret Black and Indian family in the Caribbean. This work explores the possibility that the DeGrasse family represents an early Indo-Caribbean presence in New York\, and will culminate in a digital site and book chapter as part of a broader book project.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of exchanges emerging from the exhibition “To time\, to distance” curated by Tamara Khasanova and Junho Peter Yoon.\n\n\nAAAinA is proud to share an evening of presentations and conversations emerging from the group exhibition\, To time\, to distance\, featuring artists Alisa Berger\, Daria Kim\, Luiza Pârvu\, and Toma Peiu. The exhibition highlights reflections by these artists on their belonging to and relationship with Koryo-saram communities (Корё-сарам\, 고려사람). Within the global Korean diaspora\, Koryo-saram occupies a distinct position as an identity formed in the aftermath of the forcible deportation of Koreans living in the Russian Far East to Central Asia in the 1930s. \nStarting with the history of Koryo-saram\, the program frames diaspora as a site of ongoing negotiations\, frictions and innovations. With research-based presentations\, field notes\, and artist talks\, the evening will reflect on how legacies of forced migration unfold across space and time\, challenging the issue of continuity. These ideas are explored not as static or linear trajectories\, but as kinetic conditions that continually reshape one’s relation to self and collective belonging. Following presentations by writer and curator Sophia Park and artists Alisa Berger\, Daria Kim\, and Toma Peiu\, the artists will join for a conversation moderated by Park. \nTo time\, to distance is co-curated by Tamara Khasanova and Junho Peter Yoon and will be on view at AHL Foundation from March 26 – April 25\, 2026. For more information and viewing hours\, please visit ahlfoundation.org. \nBios: \nAlisa Berger was born in 1987 in Makhachkala\, Republic of Dagestan\, and raised in Lviv\, Ukraine and later Essen\, Germany. It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n\n“Say something in Bengali!” \n\n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassiCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n\n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n\n\n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n\n\n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \n\nTickets sell out fast.Seats are limited. And every month is a completely new lineup.

DESCRIPTION:In their pursuit of a perfect life and a perfect marriage\, a couple enrolls in a revolutionary AI system called Perfect Life\, a device that promises certainty\, compatibility\, and lasting love. \nBut instead of fixing their relationship\, the system begins to excavate it—dragging buried memories\, unresolved conflicts\, and unlearned lessons back to the surface. As the AI rewinds\, analyzes\, and reconstructs their past\, the couple is forced to confront a difficult truth: perfection cannot move them forward until they understand what they’ve been avoiding. \nA darkly humorous and emotionally piercing exploration of love\, choice\, and accountability\, The So-Called Perfect Life asks whether intimacy can ever be optimized—and whether a future together is possible without first facing the mess of being human. \nPlaywright: Patrick Lee \nCo-Directors: Patrick Lee & Wing Lo \nTicket Prices: Early Bird $21.80\, Seniors $13.48 \n  \nAbout The Four Seas Players\nTHE FOUR SEAS PLAYERS was founded by Dr. Joanna Chan\, Ms. Sun Fu Lo\, Dr. Leo Yam\, and Mr. Chung Lo in October 1970 in New York City’s Chinatown\, as a community outreach program for young people and recent immigrants. Its purpose is to promote a spirit of harmony and cooperation through artistic involvement and to nurture an interest in and appreciation for the dramatic arts\, especially in the tradition of Chinese culture and its relationship with the Western art form as seen in New York. The name “Four Seas” represents the first two Chinese characters in the ancient saying: “Within the four seas\, all men are brothers.”

SUMMARY:Movie: Project Hail Mary with Theater Takeover Tuesday & Potluck Asian America
DESCRIPTION:Potluck Asian America is joining forces with the community-based Theater Takeover Tuesdays crew to screen the new movie Project Hail Mary. \nTheater Takeover Tuesdays is a grassroots moviegoing group organized by Julie Huang and friends that brings communities together to support films\, particularly those connected to Asian and Asian American actors\, writers\, directors\, and creators. The gatherings began during the SAG-AFTRA strike\, when artists could not promote their work in the usual ways and people were eager to reconnect after years of COVID isolation. \nEveryone buys their own ticket\, showing up simply to support the film and the artists behind it. After the screening\, the audience often gathers in the theater lobby for a group photo or short video to capture the moment. \nFrom time to time\, actors\, writers\, directors\, stunt performers\, and others connected to the film stop by to meet the audience. The dream is to bring artists and communities together in a joyful\, authentic way while encouraging more organizations to join the effort and help fill theaters through the simple act of showing up. \nTuesday\, March 31\nJoin us for the 6:30 PM showing at Regal Essex Crossing\nTickets: $7.99 (+ $2 handling fee) \nTicket note:\nTickets are $7.99 if purchased at the theater (no booking fee). Regal adds a $2 fee for app purchases. If anyone reaches out trying to sell tickets\, we recommend ignoring and purchasing directly through Regal.\nPlease ignore strangers trying to sell you their extra ticket and purchase directly through Regal.\nCheck out this video on how you can get your Regal Crown Club tix for this price! https://youtube.com/shorts/T0LEbd1_LHY \nHappy Hour before the movie at 5:00: La Caverna\, 122 Rivington Street \nProject Hail Mary:  Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns\, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.
