SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever exhibition at The New York Public Library to explore the history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to NYC\, Niyū Yūrk highlights how the city has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers\, while celebrating their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. From Little Syria in Manhattan to Yemeni bodegas in Brooklyn\, from Armenian and Arab nightclubs along Eighth Avenue to community music festivals on Atlantic Avenue\, and from women’s activism and advocacy groups to experimental composers and playwrights like Halim El-Dabh and Reza Abdoh\, the exhibition shows how these rich stories are preserved within NYPL’s collections. \nNiyū Yūrk explores the often overlooked history of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) immigration to New York City\, from the first waves in the late 19th century to the present. The exhibition highlights how New York City has shaped the lives\, identities\, and creative practices of MENA communities\, artists\, and writers. It also emphasizes their enduring contributions to the city’s cultural landscape and place in global culture. \nThrough an array of materials—including local newspapers\, rare books\, archival documents\, prints\, artists’ books\, photographs\, music records\, and film—the exhibition showcases how these voices have been preserved and presented. Niyū Yūrk creates a dynamic dialogue across time\, illustrating the evolving nature of MENA migration to the city as well as the Library’s role in documenting this history. While reflecting on new directions in collecting practices\, it also aims to address gaps in those practices and envision a more inclusive archival future. \nThis exhibition is organized by The New York Public Library and curated by Hiba Abid\, Curator for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

SUMMARY:Charlene Kaye: Comedy and Music
DESCRIPTION:Charlene Kaye – Friday\, January 16 – 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n\n\nWelcome to the unhinged\, razor-sharp\, fluorescent universe of Charlene Kaye: guitar god\, internet legend and “Breakout Comedy Star” according to Rolling Stone Magazine. Known for her countless viral videos such as “Every Taylor Swift Song” (100M views and counting)\, this new show is the follow-up to “Tiger Daughter: Or\, How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame.” That show played to sold-out runs at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, and will soon be filmed as her first comedy special. \nWhile Tiger Daughter was a vulnerable story about Charlene’s relationship with her Chinese Tiger Mother\, this new show is a madcap musical revue about being a menace to society as a queer Asian guitar shredder. From her previous life as a folk singer-songwriter\, to shredding guitar in Darren Criss’ internet sensation Team StarKid\, to that time she started an epic feud with a restaurant by giving them a one-star review\, to starting endless gender flipped cover bands like Guns N’ Hoses and Labiahead (her all-female Guns N’ Roses and Radiohead cover bands\, respectively). You’ll be rolling in your seats\, you’ll learn a lot about how music works\, and you might even confuse her for Bobby Lee. Anything is possible! \n\n\n7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show \n$15 advance / $20 at the door GA (mixed seated / standing) \nAges 21+ \n\n\nFAQ\nAll Advance and Door tickets are Mixed Seating and Standing. Seating is limited. \nWhen you arrive\, simply check in at the door by providing the name of the ticket purchaser to claim your Will Call tickets. \nOnly Credit and Tap to Pay are accepted for ticket sales at the door. \nMost other questions answered here.

A variety of textures\, shapes\, colors\, and materials will be available for participants to mix\, layer\, and arrange into their own imaginative creatures. \nDesigned for curious makers and math lovers of all ages\, this hands-on workshop invites participants to learn\, play\, and discover how math\, culture\, and creativity come together. Best for ages 6-12. Older and younger siblings are welcome. Book signing and purchase will follow the reading! \nSCHEDULE \n\nThe MOCACREATE drop-in arts & crafts will run from 2 – 4 PM.\nThe MOCAKIDS Meet & Greet with Chi-Hoon and Juniper will start at 2:30 PM.\n\nThis event is FREE with museum admission! Reservations are encouraged. MOCA Family Level Members should enter their promo code to access complimentary tickets. \nAbout Juniper and the Red Swoosh: \nJuniper\, a nine-year-old girl with a vision impairment\, sets out to Corn Market to buy kernels to make popcorn. In front of the market\, she encounters a red creature that is swooshing out with a bag of coins totaling 100 cents. \nJuniper works with Ms. Maize\, the shop owner\, to remediate the theft. Along the way\, Juniper uses her 3D-Click™ abacus to keep track of the coins she retrieves and teaches readers how to add using the abacus. \nThis interactive book provides step-by-step instructions for readers to follow Juniper as she sets her abacus to tally the coins. \nAbout Chi-Hoon Kim and Juniper Eisenberg: \nJuniper Eisenberg \nJuniper is a brave\, fun-loving explorer. Her favorite subject is math and she enjoys using her abacus to solve problems about money. She loves all colors except orange and has a soft spot for pigs and goats. When she is not coming up with jokes\, you can find her practicing her parkour moves. Juniper lives in New York City with her parents. \nChi-Hoon Kim \nChi-Hoon is Juniper’s mother and an academic who holds a PhD in anthropology with a concentration in food studies. She embarked on the adventure to learn Braille and other non-visual skills when Juniper was born. Her mission is to raise awareness about accessible tools and accommodations to empower children with vision impairments. \nWhat is the 3D-Click™ abacus? \nAn abacus is an ancient calculation device used around the world. It features a frame holding an arrangement of slidable beads on rods. It is a tool that helps people visually and tactilely add\, subtract\, multiply\, and divide numbers. Just as typically sighted people use pen and paper to solve math problems\, those with vision impairments can use an adapted abacus. The multi-modal book\, Juniper and the Red Swoosh features a universally designed 3D printed abacus called the 3D-Click™. With our collaborators Mountain Lakes Public Library Makerspace and Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired\, we reimaged the abacus with access in mind to modernize and expand the reach of the abacus. The innovative “click and bump” rod design of the 3D-Click™ locks in the counting beads and provides haptic and auditory feedback. These unique features support foundational math literacy skills such as number sense\, number bonds\, and place value. \nPaint\, build\, craft\, and collage with us! Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists\, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month. MOCACREATE workshops are designed with families in mind\, but all are welcome! \nYu Rong is a painter and product designer. She was born in Sichuan and currently lives in New York City\, where she is a teaching artist at the Hope Garden Center and at MOCA. She received her BFA in Product Design and MFA in Painting at Parsons School of Design and NYSS\, but has been practicing art ever since she was a child. You can learn more about her here: www.yurong.work! \nMOCACREATE & MOCAKIDS Meet & Greets are supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts under Governor Kathy Hochul’s Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. \nGeneral Admission \n\nAdults: $10\nSeniors (over 55): $5\nStudents (with valid ID): $5\nVisitors with disabilities: $5\n\nBook online in advance to receive $2 discount for adults. \nReserve Here \nFamily Level Member Admission: FREE \nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:The Story Collider: Unspoken - Stories About Science
DESCRIPTION:True\, personal stories about science\n\n\nThe Story Collider is a storytelling show dedicated to bringing true\, personal stories about science to audiences around the world. Each month we bring five storytellers to the stage to tell their stories of how science impacted their lives in touching\, funny\, and interesting ways. \nJoin us for an evening of stories about science that is not talked about enough\, from mental health to infertility. Spend the evening with 5 stories that need to be heard\, at Caveat\, NYC! \nHosted by Diana Li and Paula Croxson at Caveat NYC. Doors at 6:30pm. Show starts at 7:00pm. \nIn person and livestreamed. Early bird tickets available until until January 19\, 7:00pm. \nStories by:\nDenise Cai\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai\, which is ironic since her last science class was high school biology. Her two biggest regrets are not trying out for the cheerleading team and not starting antidepressants sooner. Both helped shape her path toward understanding how our past experiences guide who we become. She studies how the brain organizes and integrates experiences so memories can inform future choices\, and how this process changes with trauma or aging. Denise co-developed open source Miniscopes\, (tiny head-mounted microscopes) that let researchers watch neurons interact in real time. Using these tools\, her lab has shown that memory systems are not tidy photo albums. They are more like chaotic group chats that constantly link\, relink\, and reshape our identities. Denise is passionate about fostering curiosity\, creativity\, and community. She believes that real scientific breakthroughs arise when diverse perspectives are welcomed and empowered. She still suspects she would have made a great cheerleader. \nDr Zakia Ghafari is an author\, consultant\, and captivating storyteller. An immigrant from Afghanistan\, she weaves powerful narratives of resilience\, womanhood\, and reinvention. Blending science and soul\, she inspires audiences to embrace change\, celebrate strength\, and transform life’s challenges into fuel for a vibrant\, empowered future. \nClare McCormack\, PhD\, is an assistant professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on women’s mental health in pregnancy and the peripartum\, and challenges the “mommy brain” construct. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding interactions between brain\, biology\, and the environment in shaping adaptation to parenthood. Her recent work is among the first to use brain MRI during pregnancy to examine neuroplasticity at the transition to parenthood and its implications for maternal and infant health. \nDr. Kibby McMahon is a licensed clinical psychologist\, researcher\, and digital health entrepreneur who’s obsessed with the emotional complexities of relationships. She earned her BA from Columbia University and her PhD in clinical psychology from Duke University\, where her NIMH-funded research focused on how regulating our own emotions helps us connect more deeply with others. She has held research and clinical roles at Duke University Medical Center\, Columbia University\, Weill Cornell Hospital\, and the Max Planck Institute. Dr. Kibby is a family caregiver and breast cancer survivor- experiences that reshaped how she understands vulnerability\, resilience\, and what it means to care for others while holding yourself together. These threads came together when she co-founded KulaMind\, a digital mental health company that supports loved ones of people with mental illness through evidence-based skills\, coaching\, and AI-powered tools. She also hosts the podcast “A Little Help for Our Friends\,” which explores the invisible emotional labor of loving someone who is struggling with mental health or addiction. She lives in New York with her tornado of a son\, a fluff of a dog\, and a partner-in-crime husband. \nAnnie Tan is an educator\, activist\, writer and storyteller from Manhattan’s Chinatown. Annie’s work has been featured in Huffington Post\, New Republic\, PBS’ Asian Americans\, RISK! and twice on The Moth Radio Hour on NPR. Annie is writing a memoir about connecting with her immigrant parents despite not sharing a common fluent language. Find more at annietan.com.

SUMMARY:Film: Standing Above The Clouds followed Q&A with director Jalena Keane-Lee
DESCRIPTION:Standing Above the Clouds highlights the movement to protect Mauna Kea through the intergenerational stories of women in three Native Hawaiian families as they stand for the sacred mountain. The film follows teacher and community organizer Pua Case and her two daughters — artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores — who have been called to stop the telescope since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions and court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests\, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.

It is not just a show — it is a movement. A monthly showcase in the heart of Midtown Manhattan\, steps away from Times Square\, designed for audiences who crave bold storytelling\, sharp perspective\, and the raw energy of international voices. \nThe show reflects the momentum of global comedians who have changed the landscape of comedy — Hasan Minhaj\, Andrew Schulz\, Nimesh Patel\, Ali Wong\, Russell Peters\, Vir Das\, Hari Kondabolu\, Zarna Garg\, Jimmy O. Yang\, Aparna Nancherla\, Aakash Singh\, and more. Comedy fans search phrases like “shows like Hasan Minhaj\,” “brown comedy in NYC\,” or “stand-up comedy similar to Russell Peters\,” and Laughing Lassi appears because the DNA of the show is exactly that — smart\, multicultural storytelling rooted in immigrant experience and identity. \nWhy Laughing Lassi Matters\nMost comedy lineups in Manhattan look the same: similar voices\, similar perspectives\, similar punchlines. \nLaughing Lassi is different. \nAt Laughing Lassi\, comedians talk about: \n\nImmigrant parents who negotiate everything\nMarrying outside your culture\nConfusing dating rules in America\nBeing brown in corporate America\nNavigating two identities at once — “American enough” but also “brown enough”\n\nFrom Bollywood jokes to crowd work about spicy food to diaspora humor that hits at your soul\, these comedians deliver observational humor\, storytelling comedy\, dark humor\, and clean comedy depending on the night. \nMany audience members discover Laughing Lassi while searching: \n\ncomedy near me\nNYC date night ideas\nunique NYC experiences\ncomedy shows tonight NYC\nthings to do in NYC this weekend\nfun things to do in Manhattan\nbest nightlife in NYC\n\nOthers find it while specifically looking for a: \n\nsouth asian standup comedy show\nindian standup comedy show in new york city\npakistani standup comedy show\nbangladeshi standup comedy show\ndesi standup comedy show in new york city\nsouth asian standup comedy show in new jersey\n\nOr when searching generic NYC entertainment terms: \n\nstandup comedy show\ncomedy show\nstandup comedy show new york city\nlive standup comedy show in new york city\ncheap comedy tickets new york\nbest comedy show in manhattan\nbest standup comedy show in new york city\n\nLaughing Lassi ranks because it is genuinely what people are searching for. \nNYC Is Ready for This Comedy Era\nNew York City has always been the proving ground of comedy. Every great comedian hustles through Comedy Cellar\, Comedy Cellar NYC\, Comedy Cellar New York\, Gotham Comedy Club\, and eventually dreams of performing at iconic venues like Radio City Music Hall\, just like the tours of Hasan Minhaj’s The King’s Jester and Act Your Age. \nBut Laughing Lassi fills a gap that no traditional comedy club was addressing. \nFor the first time in NYC: \n\nBrown people are not just the audience.\nBrown comedians are the headliners.\n\nThe laughter in that room hits differently\, because finally the stories being told onstage reflect the people sitting in the crowd. \nMore Than a Show: It’s a Cultural Touchpoint\nLaughing Lassi is not just entertainment — it is a cultural gathering. \nAudience members describe it as: \n\n“brown community therapy”\n“brown TED Talk\, but funnier”\n“Bollywood meets Andrew Schulz crowd work”\n“Hasan Minhaj energy with Russell Peters nostalgia”\n\nSouth Asian humor blends seamlessly with NYC nightlife\, making the show a go-to destination for: \n\nfriend groups looking for something new\,\ncouples searching for date night ideas NYC\,\nsolo newcomers searching comedy near me\,\ntourists exploring things to do in New York City\,\nbrown singles hoping to meet other South Asians.\n\nLaughing Lassi regularly draws diverse crowds from: \n\nManhattan\nWest Village\nBrooklyn\nQueens\nNew Jersey\nLong Island\n\nThis show is becoming the official South Asian culture event NYC didn’t know it needed. \nA Community That Represents Millions\nLaughing Lassi is the only show where an audience member can shout: \n“Say something in Bengali!” \n…and three comics on the lineup actually can. \nIt is the only show where: \n\nA Pakistani comedian roasts a Bangladeshi guy sitting in the front row\,\nAn Indian comic compares aunties to CIA interrogators\,\nA Filipino American jokes about being mistaken for South Asian\,\nA Korean American explains why brown parents and Korean parents are the same — just different spices.\n\nLaughing Lassi is a multicultural comedy night with global flavor. \nWhat Makes Laughing Lassi SEO-Powerful\nBecause it includes phrases people actively search: \n\ncomedy cellar nyc\ncomedy shows nyc\ncomedy club nyc\ncomedy club new york\nnyc comedy club\nbest comedy show in west village\nsouth asian comedy nyc\ndesi standup comedy show new york city\nindian comedians nyc\npakistani comedy show nyc\nbangladeshi comedy show new york\n\n…and NYC tourism search terms: \n\nlive comedy near times square\nlast minute tickets NYC\ngroup activities NYC\nweekend events NYC\n\nLaughing Lassi naturally ranks. \nSearch engines see Laughing Lassi associated with high-value keywords like: \n\ncrowd work comedy\nstorytelling comedy\nimmigrant humor\ndiaspora jokes\nmulticultural comedy\n\nThis helps Google\, Instagram\, YouTube\, TikTok\, and Eventbrite connect Laughing Lassi with searches for “shows like Hasan Minhaj” or “brown comedy NYC.” \nLaughing Lassi is the Future of Comedy\nLaughing Lassi is becoming the cultural home for the next generation of comedians — the ones who will headline Netflix specials\, late-night shows\, and eventually sell out Radio City Music Hall. \nBecause the future of comedy is not one voice. \nIt’s many. \nAnd they’re all on this stage. \nCall to Action:\nFollow the journey on Instagram: @LaughingLassi\nCome see the show that everyone is talking about — the one critics and audiences call: \n“The best standup comedy show in Manhattan.” \n“The funniest Desi comedy show in New York City.” \n“If Hasan Minhaj and Russell Peters had a baby — it would be Laughing Lassi.” \nTickets sell out fast.\nSeats are limited.\nAnd every month is a completely new lineup.

SUMMARY:Asian Americans & Nature - Virtual Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a collaborative workshop exploring the ways Asian Americans relate to nature through reflections on migration\, labor\, and place!\n\n\nAsian Americans & Nature \nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 3rd at 5PM PST / 8PM EST for our next People’s School for Justice session! \nThis will be a collaborative workshop exploring the ways Asian Americans relate to nature through reflections on migration\, labor\, and place! \nHow have Asian Americans historically been positioned in relationship to nature? What new relationships to our environment can we create? How might we question settler urges to own and commodify nature – what new ways of inhabiting the earth are possible? \nParticipants will come together to reflect on the landscapes and everyday environments that shape Asian American lives. Thinking expansively about both “Asian America” and “nature\,” and centering lived experience\, we will explore how migration\, family history\, and place influence our relationships with our environment. \nNo prior knowledge needed. We will begin with short grounding/framing\, historical context\, and case studies around Asian American relationships to nature drawn from my scholarly research\, and then move through guided prompts and shared conversation. Looking forward to being in community with you. ❤️ \nMeet the Facilitator \nK Yin (they/them/ta) is a writer and scholar. They are currently a PhD student in American Studies at Brown. Broadly\, they have interests in and teach on Asian American art\, race and ethnic studies\, and the environment. Their research explores 19th-century visual archives alongside contemporary Asian American art and performance. \nThey were raised between Sonoma County and Zhejiang. They love leaf-wrapped foods of all kinds (tamales\, zongzi\, etc.). You can find their culinary creations at congee_baby on Instagram. \n

SUMMARY:Noguchi’s New York
DESCRIPTION:In 1922\, Isamu Noguchi first moved to New York—a city that would remain his on-again\, off-again home for the remainder of his life. Though he was an avid traveler who built meaningful connections and temporary homes around the world\, Noguchi always returned to New York. It was here that he created some of his most iconic artworks and imagined countless others. \nThis exhibition examines Noguchi’s deep and dynamic relationship with New York City\, exploring how its material\, cultural\, social\, and political landscape indelibly transformed his artwork and thinking\, and how he in turn transformed the city. It also highlights Noguchi’s unflagging attempts to give back by sculpting communal spaces for exploration and play—efforts often thwarted\, most notably by the influential NYC Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. \nNoguchi’s New York encompasses more than 50 works\, including sculptures\, project models\, photographs\, and archival materials. The exhibition also brings to life Noguchi’s visions for unrealized playgrounds and playground equipment through a series of hand-painted animated films by Jack Cunningham and Nicolas Ménard of Eastend Western. \nOrganized on the 40th anniversary of The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum\, this exhibition celebrates the Museum itself as one of Noguchi’s most profound gifts to this city he called home. \nPhoto credit: Isamu Noguchi\, 1980
