SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The New York Sari: A Journey Through Tradition\, Fashion\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:The New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City and how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress. \nThe New York Sari centers the sari as an essential part of the cultural fabric of New York City\, using it as a metaphor for the ways in which the individuals who wear and create saris have straddled tradition\, culture\, and modernity in their work\, art\, and lives. The exhibition tells the stories of who wears saris\, the relationship between saris and identities\, and how they’ve evolved over time. \nThe New York Sari showcases the deep influence that South Asians have had on the culture of New York City from the Gilded Age to the present day\, beginning with the little known history of Coney Island’s first theme park and culminating with the vibrant communities that are home to the South Asian diaspora today. Offering a unique history of migrant communities and gender in New York City\, the exhibition explores how individuals have drawn strength from tradition while looking clearly towards a bolder future of inclusion and progress.

SUMMARY:Theater: From Trinity to Trinity
DESCRIPTION:Amaterasu Za\, New York’s only bilingual Japanese-English theater company\, presents the New York premiere of From Trinity to Trinity\, a powerful one-woman play based on the autobiographical writings of Kyoko Hayashi\, a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. The play follows Hayashi’s 1999 pilgrimage to the Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the bomb that changed her life was first tested.\n\nPerformed by acclaimed actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars)\, this one-woman play is adapted from an English translation of Hayashi’s book by Eiko Otake (of Eiko & Koma). Ako’s performance—enhanced by evocative imagery and soundscape — offers an intimate yet universal meditation on trauma\, resilience\, remembrance\, and the stories nations tell themselves.\nOn August 9th\, 1945\, fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Kyoko Hayashi was sent to work at the Mitsubishi Munitions Factory and miraculously survived the blast only to endure radiation sickness and its painful after-effects for the next 73 years. Hayashi started writing in 1962 and became a leading literary voice for the Hibakusha\, those who survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. She published dozens of books\, articles\, stories\, and poems\, and won multiple literary awards. \nHer moving autobiographical short work\, From Trinity To Trinity\, about her 1999 pilgrimage to Trinity Site in New Mexico\, where the atomic bomb that would define her life was first tested\, was published in 2000 and translated into English by Eiko Otake of the performance artist duo Eiko & Koma (Station Hill Press\, 2010). In 2009\, Eiko reached out to the NY-based actress Ako (Shogun\, God Said This\, Snow Falling on Cedars\, and the founder of the Amaterasu Za theater company in NYC) suggested she perform it as a one-person play. It has been performed only twice\, in workshops at New York Theater Workshop in 2009 and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2010. They say that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it\, but how you remember the past and whose eyes you are seeing it through are just as important. \nIn this\, the 80th anniversary year of the 1945 atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, which coincides with the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps throughout Germany that same year\, we are reminded of humanity’s boundless capacity for cruelty and destruction. Those who survived these catastrophes came away with perspectives that some expressed in art and others in literature or advocacy. Their voices were powerful\, and they deserve to be heard and even amplified again and again in this time when the news\, sadly\, seems to be filled once again with stories of violence\, indifference\, and nationalism. \n\nPerformed in English with Japanese subtitle translation.\nRunning time: approximately 45 minutes.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: hapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project
DESCRIPTION:In 2001\, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked — What are you? After photographing more than 1\,200 people\, the project culminated in the landmark book and exhibition Kip Fulbeck: Part Asian\, 100% Hapa\, which toured throughout the U.S. A new exhibition Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project\, revisits some of the original subjects two decades later. How do they look now? How have their views on their own identity changed? \nDerived from the Hawaiian word for “half\,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. The exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. The 2020 Census showed that 10% of the population identified as multiracial\, almost tripling from ten years before. In Hapa.me\, Fulbeck presents a nuanced portrait of change and growth within this broad identity by focusing on individual faces and voices. \nOriginating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles\, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects\, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. A central reading table encourages visitors to flip through Hapa.me artist’s books for a fuller archive of the project. This exhibition is a homecoming of sorts for Fulbeck: MOCA was one of the first museums to exhibit the Hapa Project and it has remained a fixture of our permanent exhibition which explores over 200 years of the experiences of Chinese in America. \nhapa.me: 25 Years of the Hapa Project and related programs are made possible with generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council; Bloomberg Philanthropies; and is funded by a grant from the New York City Tourism Foundation. \nAbout the Artist \nKip Fulbeck has exhibited and performed in over 20 countries and throughout the U.S. He is the author of six books including Part Asian\, 100% Hapa; Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; and Hapa.me – 15 Years of The Hapa Project\, and the exhibition artist of Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. He teaches as a Distinguished Professor of Art at the UCSB\, where he received the Faculty Diversity Award and the Distinguished Teaching Award\, and has been named an Outstanding Faculty Member five times.

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: Xyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home
DESCRIPTION:Picnic\, 2022. Courtesy of the artist. \nOctober 4 – November 2\, 2025\nFlux IV\, 56-21 2nd Street\nOpen Saturdays\, 12:00 – 6:00 pm or by appointment \nFlux Factory is pleased to present The Diaspora is Home\, a solo exhibition by Xyza Cruz Bacani. This exhibition presents photographs of the Asian American diaspora\, from portraits in living rooms to scenes of community gatherings\, food traditions\, and religious practices. Installed within a living room environment\, Bacani’s work evokes belonging and cultural continuity\, transforming the gallery into a space of warmth\, reflection\, and collective memory. The Diaspora is Home runs from October 4 – November 2\, 2025 with an opening reception on Saturday\, October 4\, accompanied by the presence of community members who appear in the photographs\, sharing food they have prepared\, and a tea demonstration by Anna Ye. \nThe Diaspora is Home invites you into the lived experience of immigrants in Queens. When we leave our motherlands\, we take more than our belongings. We bring our languages\, flavors\, the strength of our ancestors\, and resilience forged in hardship. Leaving is never simple. Arriving is a different story. We carry the pains of separations; traumas that we can still taste in our mouths. We learned to find joy in our small victories\, pride in our survival\, and accept the scars of migration as beauty in building anew. This exhibition traces these dualities: joy and struggle\, memory and reinvention. \nDeveloped through visits to homes and close engagement with community members\, Bacani’s works reflect an intimate process of trust and reciprocity. The accompanying living room installation mirrors the spaces in which the photographs were taken\, creating a familiar and welcoming environment. By inviting visitors to gather\, sit\, and reflect\, the installation transforms Flux IV into a site of hospitality and shared presence\, underscoring the centrality of home within the diasporic experience. Each work in The Diaspora is Home speaks to the search for home\, the courage to remain visible\, and the tenderness of community. In today’s world\, where immigrants are portrayed negatively and our existence is questioned daily\, we choose to tell our own stories. \nJoin us on this journey. Bring your own stories. Together\, we honor the spaces between us\, find  our home in the diaspora where kindness grows\, hope lives\, and celebrate our undeniable existence. \nXyza Cruz Bacani: The Diaspora is Home is presented as part of the artist’s 2025 NYSCA Fellowship. Special thanks to Fujifilm US\, Martin Kaminer\, and the Tim Hermann Charitable Family Foundation for their support. \nAbout the Artist\nXyza Cruz Bacani (b. 1987\, the Philippines) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist and writer based in New York. Her experience as a second-generation domestic worker in Hong Kong informs her practice and engagement in less visible\, erased\, and underreported world events. Her works explore migration\, transnational identity\, climate change\, and labor. Bacani received her M.A. in Arts Politics at New York University. She has been recognized as one of Asia Society’s Asia 21 Young Leaders\, Artpil 30 Under 30 Women Photographers\, Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Asia\, and BBC’s 100 Women of the World. SUMMARY:Hiyoku: Wings That Fly Together | Taiko Concert with Discount
DESCRIPTION:Join OMNY Taiko for an unforgettable evening of powerful rhythm\, heartfelt storytelling\, and communal spirit.\n\n\nHiyoku: Wings That Fly Together | TAIKO CONCERT\nDiscount code “potluckasianamerica” for 15% off tickets. \nIn Chinese and Japanese poetry and art\, the mythical hiyoku bird has just one wing—it can only fly when it finds its other half and the two work together in harmony. In this concert\, OMNY Taiko explores this theme of connection and the beauty of individual voices resonating\, not in unison\, but in mutual support. Our strength lies in celebrating our differences—our unique bodies\, expressions\, and rhythms—and having them enrich our performances\, our collaborations\, and our community. \nThrough thunderous storms\, delicate weavings\, and joyful celebrations\, each piece in Hiyoku traces the journey of individuals coming together in sound and spirit. We aim to share energy\, trust\, and support not only amongst the performers\, but to you in the audience as well. This is a concert about flying higher because we lift one another—wing to wing\, heart to heart. \nThis year\, OMNY Taiko will be joined by New York Taiko Aiko Kai as our special guests! \nJoin us at the Brooklyn Music School on October 4th for an unforgettable evening of drumming that blends traditional Japanese rhythms with our New York roots. This in-person event will start at 6:00 PM EDT\, doors open at 5:30 PM. We can’t wait to see you there! \nNote: Tickets may be available at the door\, depending on availability. \n– —– \nAbout OMNY Taiko \nOMNY Taiko is a vibrant\, tight-knit community drumming group striving to share the art of taiko drumming with people and communities across the New York City area through inclusive\, accessible performances\, classes\, and workshops. \nAs a form of rhythmic and artistic expression\, taiko allows individuals to convey emotion and energy\, and to connect with others through music. OMNY Taiko emphasizes the communal aspect of ensemble drumming: \n\nbringing people together to create music as a group\nfostering a sense of community and belonging\nproviding opportunities for collaboration and teamwork\n\nOne of our primary goals is to become emblematic of the energy of New York City\, reflecting the story of a seed born on the concrete streets and blossoming into a vibrant community with the strength and tenacity of a city that never sleeps.

SUMMARY:Community Webinar – NYS Language Access Rights and Resources
DESCRIPTION:The New York State Office of Language Access (OLA) works to ensure meaningful language access in government services and programs for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). OLA supports state agencies in complying with language access laws\, develops resources and training\, and promotes equitable access to critical information and services for all New Yorkers. Roughly 42% of AAPI New Yorkers are limited English proficient\, which affects their ability to participate in community health programs and continue receiving the health care they need. SUMMARY:Panel: San Francisco Opera: The Monkey King (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:This program features a unique public affairs arts conversation between Chinese-born composer Huang Ruo and Matthew Shilvock\, who is in his tenth season as San Francisco Opera’s general director. \nThe Monkey King (猴王悟空)\, by Huang Ruo and American librettist/playwright David Henry Hwang\, conducted by Carolyn Kuan\, is of topical interest as an action hero story with moments of peace and reflection. The Monkey King centers around the mythic hero from China’s classic novel Journey to the West. A monkey born from a stone becomes the ruler of the monkeys and challenges the gods of the seas and heavens in a bid for immortality. SF Opera is producing the world premiere\, performed in English and Chinese\, uniting the disciplines of opera\, dance and puppetry. \nThe Monkey King‘s blended production is not your grandmothers’ traditional opera! It’s also a 2024 blockbuster video game Black Myth: Wukong. \nMusical theatre audiences are familiar with Broadway’s acclaimed Tony award winning M. Butterfly team\, which was also led by Ruo and American librettist/playwright David Henry Whang and conductor Carolyn Kuan. \nDescribing a technique he calls “dimensionalism\,” Ruo uses a “musical voice which draws equal inspiration from Chinese folk\, Western avant-garde\, rock and jazz (Mimakos\, 2011).” Of Monkey King\, he says\, “In our new opera\, which blends cultural traditions with a spectacular multidisciplinary production\, I hope to bring this Eastern superhero to life and shine a hopeful light that will always appear in any turbulent time.” \nShilvock announced that The Monkey King\, opening November 14 at War Memorial Opera House\, reflects SF Opera’s commitment to global storytelling that makes a difference. He notes that “It’s indicative of artistry that affirms the Bay Area as one of the great cultural centers of the world.” \nOur moderator will be Cole Thomason-Redus\, vice chair of the Arts Member-led Forum\, and educational content curator for San Francisco Opera.

SUMMARY:Hetty Lui McKinnon on Cookbook: Linger\, with Emma Straub
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brooklyn Heights Library to hear Hetty Lui McKinnon discuss her new book Linger with Emma Straub \n“[My] culinary life began with salad. A charred broccoli salad\, to be specific. Crispy florets tossed with chickpeas and cooling mint\, flecked with red chilli pepper and zested lemon peel\, bathed in a garlicky caper oil. That salad inspired me to consider possibilities. It ultimately led me here.” \nFrom her salad-delivery days in Sydney to her current career as a food writer and bestselling cookbook author in New York\, Hetty Lui McKinnon has long known the power of salads to connect and create community. Salads are meant to be shared; they are what you bring to a gathering of friends or family\, the ultimate comfort food. \nWith Linger\, Hetty has come full circle. Rather than delivering salads to members of her community\, this time\, she has invited friends into her home\, to share salads\, sweets and stories around her dining room table. Linger documents these intimate gatherings\, with vegetable-laden\, loosely seasonal menus enjoyed and photographed in real time. \nThese salads are not just piles of leafy greens—they are beautiful\, rich creations. In fact\, one of McKinnon’s salad rules is that salads don’t always have to have leaves. Another salad rule? Anything can be a salad. \nWith over 100 inventive recipes for meal-worthy salads\, smaller bites and simple sweets\, Hetty invites you to become a part of an unforgettable shared experience of community\, food and friendship. \n\nHetty Lui McKinnon is a Chinese Australian cook and food writer. She is the author of five bestselling cookbooks\, including her genre-defining Community; Neighborhood; Family; To Asia\, With Love; and\, most recently\, Tenderheart\, which won a James Beard Award and an IACP Award in 2024. Hetty is a regular contributor to New York Times Cooking and ABC Lifestyle and writes the popular weekly newsletter To Vegetables\, With Love. Born and raised in Sydney\, she now resides in Brooklyn\, New York. \nEmma Straub is the New York Times bestselling author of six books for adults: the novels This Time Tomorrow\, All Adults Here\, The Vacationers\, Modern Lovers\, Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures\, and the short story collection Other People We Married. She is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and her work has been published in more than 20 languages. Emma and her husband own Books Are Magic\, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn\, New York.
