DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. As a completely volunteer-run organization\, we are so grateful for your financial support! \nwww.aajil.org \nwww.instagram.com/aajil_org/ \n \nYou will be able to access the link by signing into your Eventbrite and viewing links from Get Tickets or going the link under Location with View Event Details. \nApplication for our Formations Program ’25-’26 available now.

SUMMARY:Theater: GUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs
DESCRIPTION:Memoirs (Act 2) is the second act of GUT (굿)\, a three-act autobiographical hybrid/dance work and the fifth and final installment of Soomi Kim’s series exploring mortality in Korean and Asian American lives. Set between 1950s postwar Korea and present-day America\, Memoirs traces a poetic journey through grief\, fragmented memory\, and complicated love—asking: how can we let go when grief is a knot of longing and regret? \nGUT (굿) Act 2: Memoirs (a work in progress) brings together a stellar company of 4 AAPI performers led by director and co-developer Peter Kim. The piece was first developed at Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor residency in 2023 and continued its journey at BAM’s 2024 Artist Residency\, followed by the Mercury Store in 2025. This production is made possible by support from The NYC Women’s Fund for Media\, Music and Theatre by the City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment in association with The New York Foundation for the Arts. \nCreated by Soomi Kim. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Creating Kosher Chop Suey
DESCRIPTION:What happened when chop suey\, a Chinese dish with American roots\, encountered Jewish customers in New York at the turn of the century? A new Center for Women’s History installation in the Joyce B. Cowin Women’s History Niche sheds light on the vibrant\, gastronomic collaboration between two ethnic communities. From debates in the Yiddish press to the publication of  kosher Chinese cookbooks\, and from representations in fine art to restaurant ephemera\, the installation explores how Jewish and Chinese women\, with a shared love for food\, together introduced a new phenomenon in the 1960s: kosher Chinese cuisine. Curated by Shiyong Lu\, Mellon Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History and Public History\, and Anna Danziger Halperin\, Director for the Center for Women’s History.  \nImage: Gifford Reynolds Beal (1879–1956). Chinese Restaurant #1\, ca. 1930. DESCRIPTION:Join CNN’s Emmy Award-winning chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta for a conversation about the mystery of chronic pain\, and how to eliminate it from your life — and Gupta’s new book\, It Doesn’t Have to Hurt: Your Smart Guide to a Pain-Free Life. \nAre you one of the 52 million people who experience chronic pain in your day-to-day life? SUMMARY:Festival & Screening – 9-Man: 80 Years of Chinatown Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 80 years of 9-Man with an evening of food\, music\, and local vendors in the heart of Chinatown. This special community event honors the legacy of the game and the people who’ve built it—on and off the court. Whether you’re a longtime player or just discovering 9-Man\, come experience the culture and community that make it all possible. \nJoin us for a special outdoor screening of the award-winning documentary 9-MAN on Sunday\, August 31 at 7:30 PM in Columbus Park. \n9-MAN uncovers an isolated and unique streetball tournament played by Chinese-Americans in the heart of Chinatowns across the USA and Canada. Largely undiscovered by the mainstream\, the game is a gritty\, athletic\, chaotic urban treasure traditionally played in parking lots and back alleys and it is fiercely protected by a community of men who require that 2/3 of players are “100% Chinese.” In the 1930’s\, a 9-Man tournament was born. It emerged at a time when anti-Chinese sentiment and laws forced restaurant workers and laundrymen to socialize exclusively amongst themselves. Today it’s a lasting connection to Chinatown for a dynamic community of men who know a different\, more integrated world\, but still fight to maintain autonomy and tradition. \nPart of the The 80th North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament

SUMMARY:Who Is This Music For? Asian Diaspora\, Counterculture\, and Access
DESCRIPTION:A4 brings together Asian diasporic artists from experimental/countercultural music scenes and community leaders to discuss the lack of access Asian diasporic communities have to countercultural arts. Artists in the diaspora\, especially those who work within experimental and countercultural scenes\, often challenge traditional boundaries of genre and aesthetics. In doing so\, they often look inward towards their own cultural roots\, as well as practices from various other cultures. It is only natural then that Asian countercultural artists would wish to perform for an audience that would deeply understand the cultural implications of their transgressive work. \nYet in organizing around aesthetic ideologies\, countercultural music scenes and audiences\, especially in New York City\, exhibit a widening class and racial divide. The dominance of white curatorial spaces often distances Asian diasporic communities from artists and venues. Further\, who gets to be an artist within countercultures must also be critically examined. While arts movements often idealize working-class politics\, the level of professionalization of music writ large necessitates capital investment (in the form of schooling\, PR\, marketing\, agents/managers) to even consider becoming a working musician in any genre\, including countercultural ones. \nWho is countercultural music for? Who should countercultural music be for? How can we organize in a way that changes who this music scene is being developed by and for? Join us for a panel discussion on these questions\, the current state of the problem\, imagining better futures\, and more. \nPanelists include Che Chen\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and curator for Four One One; Amirtha Kidambi\, musician\, bandleader of Elder Ones\, educator\, and activist; Thanu Yakupitiyage\, also known as DJ Ushka\, who traverses genres across electronic club & bass music; and Shahana Hanif\, City Council Member for New York City’s 39th District. \nThe discussion will be co-moderated by Ravish Momin\, drummer\, producer\, and educator; and Leo Chang\, musician\, scholar of experimental arts\, and operations associate at A4. The evening will begin with a short performance by panelists Che Chen and Amirtha Kidambi\, followed by an hour of structured panel discussion. There will be time for Q&A and mingling following the panel. \nThe event is hosted by the Clemente\, a Puerto Rican and Latinx cultural space rooted in the Lower East Side. This event is open to all\, particularly performers\, community and arts organizers\, and cultural workers of all backgrounds. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. We suggest a $5 donation to go towards keeping A4’s programs free. \nAgenda:\n6:30-7:00 pm (30 min) – Performance\n7:00-8:00 pm (60 min) – Panel\n8:00-8:15 pm (15 min) – Q&A\n8:15-8:30 pm (15 min) – Mingling \nRecording: The panel discussion will be recorded and published on A4’s YouTube channel after the event.

Following the screening\, join us for a moderated conversation to explore the film’s themes\, creative impact\, and cultural context. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts and continue the dialogue during a casual networking reception afterward. \nDon’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in the world of bold cinema and meaningful connections. Wilhelmina is a 28-year-old overworked medical resident living in Manhattan with no social life. Her widowed mother\, Ma\, cannot understand why her desirable daughter spends all her time at work. Ma\, meanwhile\, appears to be a traditional ChineseAmerican woman still under the thumb of her ultra-strict father. That Wilhelmina and her mother are both products of the very insular\, traditional (and\, yes…gossipy) Chinese-American community in Flushing\, Queens makes the usual family ties even tighter. \nA true love letter to New York City\, SAVING FACE is told with a great deal of warmth and humor\, as everyone tries to sort out their emotions and fulfill their obligations…to themselves and to each other\, while all along acknowledging their not-so-secret lives and trying to “save face.” \nIt was the first Hollywood movie that centered on Chinese Americans since The Joy Luck Club (1993). \nStarring: Michelle Krusiec\, Joan Chen\, Lynn Chen \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:00 PM. Explore the film’s deeper meanings and behind-the-scenes context before engaging in further discussions with fellow attendees over beverages. \nABOUT New York Asian Film Festival \nThe New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s premier event showcasing the very best in new Asian cinema. Held annually in July at Film at Lincoln Center and various venues across New York City\, NYAFF is celebrated for its bold\, diverse\, and dynamic programming. \nThe festival highlights a wide spectrum of films—from emerging voices to masterful auteurs—spanning genres such as cutting-edge blockbusters\, independent treasures\, and groundbreaking works. \nAs a vital platform for Asian filmmakers\, NYAFF fosters cross-cultural dialogue and champions the innovation\, creativity\, and richness of Asian storytelling on a global stage.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Ed Park: An Oral History of Atlantis with Mira Jacob - Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:A deadpan\, wildly imaginative collection of stories that slices clean through the mundanity and absurdity of modern life\, An Oral History of Atlantis is the newest collection of short stories from Ed Park\, the author of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize–winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Same Bed Different Dreams. \n\n\nIn this utterly original collection\, characters question the fleetingness of youth and art\, reckon with the consequences of the everyday\, and find solace in the absurd\, the beautiful\, and the sublime. Throughout\, Ed Park deploys his trademark wit to create a world both strikingly recognizable and delightfully other. All together\, these fifteen stories have much to say about the meaning—and transitory nature—of our lives. And they are proof positive that Ed Park is one of the most insightful and imaginative writers working today. \nIn this conversation with Mira Jacob\, presented in collaboration with Yu & Me Books\, Ed Park discusses his latest book. \n* An Oral History of Atlantis will be available for sale at the venue. The author will sign books after the program.

SUMMARY:Theater: Destination Undefined
DESCRIPTION:A futuristic sci-fi play in NYC—robots\, memory cubes\, and a society that forgot what it meant to be human. \nSynopsis/ \nFive AI researchers from the Human Research Institute discover a mysterious Memory Cube buried in a long-forgotten Gold Vault beneath Manhattan. It contains something unimaginable: a living record of human consciousness from the year 2051. \nAs they decode the fragments\, a lost cyborg world begins to emerge — AI units fight for voting rights\, chip-enhanced humans scramble to survive a collapsing system\, and hidden secrets pulse beneath the vault’s rusted doors. Above ground\, a civilization built on algorithms begins to collapse. Below\, the last defenders of a relic economy are trapped with more questions than answers. \nBut the deeper the researchers dive\, the more unstable the memory becomes. Is this just a simulation of the past — or a warning from it? \nDestination Undefined is a genre-bending sci-fi absurdist play about trust\, identity\, and the cost of being human in a world that no longer knows what that means.

SUMMARY:REPLAY] Foundations 2025: "Modernity" and Institutional Racism
