SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

DESCRIPTION:Register to view the workshop recording\, taking a deep dive into understanding systemic racism and global “modernity.”\n\n\nInstitutional Racism and “Modernity” (Recording) \nThis session recording takes a deep dive into understanding systemic racism\, with a focus on institutional racism as the historical engine of global “modernity.” \nAll are welcome. We offer these trainings in order to equip you with histories and critical frameworks that can deepen the work of antiracism in your lives and in your communities. This three-part series intentionally integrates what is often left out of general racial justice education: AAPI experiences and decolonial values. They represent our beliefs and values as an organization and are the foundation for organizing emergent community-led labs for mutual care\, community-building\, collaboration and innovation. \nThe facilitator for this series is AAJIL’s founder and Co-Executive Director\, Dr. Sandra So Hee Chi Kim. She is an adjunct professor of race and ethnic studies at Cal State LA and a visiting scholar in USC’s Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. Her research explores the intersections of race\, global coloniality\, migration\, and culture. Her articles have appeared in Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, Korean Studies\, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture\, and Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. She is currently working on a book manuscript entitled The Kinship of Empires: Transpacific Coloniality and Korean Historical Trauma. \nThe Asian American Justice + Innovation Lab (AAJIL) is a community racial justice incubator committed to education\, community-building\, and innovation for promoting justice\, radical love\, and emergence. \nAll workshop donations go directly towards covering AAJIL’s operating costs. Locke \nChairman and Member of the Committee of 100 \nFormer Governor of Washington State\, Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to China \n▦ Moderator: \nPeter Young\, CEO\, Young & Partners\, Committee of 100 Member and Board Member\, Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \n▦ Time: \n6:00 pm Eastern Time \nThe interview will be moderated by Peter Young\, Committee of 100 member and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program. The broadcast will be 45 minutes long. \n▦ Speaker Bios: \nGary T. Locke \nChairman and Member of the Committee of 100 \nFormer Governor of Washington State\, Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to China \nAmerican born Gary Locke is the son of a Chinese immigrant and an American politician\, attorney\, and former diplomat from the State of Washington\, he has had a long and distinguish political career and record of defending human rights. Locke served as the 21st governor of Washington from 1997 to 2005\, where he was the first Chinese American governor as well as the first Asian American governor in the continental U.S. During the Obama administration\, Locke served as Secretary of Commerce from 2009 to 2011\, and as Ambassador to China from 2011 to 2014\, the first Chinese American to serve in the role. He is a graduate of Yale University and received a law degree from Boston University Law School. \nWhen asked if there is place for Asian Americans in politics\, Locke had this to say: “I think our native cultures have emphasized respect for and care of our elders\, but also focusing on education. But my overall response is that Asian Americans are part and parcel of the great success of America. Our grandparents came over in the 1800s to work on the railroads\, work the lumber camps\, goldmines\, worked in the canneries\, farmland that most people thought could never raise a crop\, worked as merchants in cities that were just emerging. They fought in world wars\, died for our freedoms and our liberties. Asian Americans have given our blood\, sweat and tears to the communities and to this country. There’s a prosperity that we on the west coast enjoy. So much of the prosperity and progress of the western states is because of the blood\, sweat and tears of Asian Americans. From doing the dirty work to fighting in our world wars and contributing to our society now as doctors\, researchers\, people in high tech\, as innovators\, in all different professions. We have every right\, indeed a responsibility\, to help set the policies that will move our communities and our nation forward.” \n▦ Moderator and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \nPeter Young \nCEO\, Young & Partners \nCommittee of 100 Member and Board Member \nChair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \nPeter Young is CEO of Young & Partners\, a boutique investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. SUMMARY:Author Talk The Midnight Shift by Cheon Seon-Ran
DESCRIPTION:A bestseller in Korea\, The Midnight Shift by Cheon Seon-Ran is a biting\, fast-paced vampire murder mystery exploring queer love and the consequences of loneliness. \nWhen four isolated elderly people die back-to-back at the same hospital by jumping out of the sixth-floor window\, Su-Yeon doesn’t understand why she’s the only one at her precinct that seems to care. But her colleagues at the police force dismiss the case as a series of unfortunate suicides due to the patients’ loneliness. But Su-Yeon doesn’t have the privilege of looking away: her dearest friend\, Grandma Eun-Shim\, lives on the sixth floor\, and Su-Yeon is terrified that something will happen to her next. \nAs Su-Yeon begins her investigation alone\, she runs into a mysterious woman named Violette at the crime scene. Violette claims to be a vampire hunter\, searching for her ex-lover\, Lily\, and is insistent that a vampire is behind the mysterious deaths. Su-Yeon is skeptical at first\, but when a fifth victim jumps from the window\, her investigation reveals the body was completely drained of blood. Desperate to discover the cause of the deaths\, Su-Yeon considers Violette’s explanation-that something supernatural is involved. \nA gripping mystery\, The Midnight Shift overflows with commentary about societal isolation and loneliness\, the sharp knife of grief\, and the effects of marginalization. \nIn this episode of Author Talks\, Cheon Seon-Ran discusses her career in Korea and the English translation of her novel.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: The L.O.V.E Club by Lio Min
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Beating Heart Baby\, an immersive novel following three estranged high schoolers who are pulled into a video game to pursue the disappearance of their friend\n \nThree years ago\, Elle (the “E” in the self-proclaimed L.O.V.E. Club) disappeared from Calendula\, an affluent Chinese American suburb in inland California. Soon afterward\, Liberty and Vera (“L” and “V”) moved away\, leaving O alone with her grief\, abandonment\, and confusion. . . until Liberty and Vera return for their senior year of high school. \nThough the L.O.V.E. Club’s three remaining members once bonded as outcasts and gamers\, they can’t pick up the pieces of their friendship. But the girls are drawn back to their old clubhouse\, where they discover\, loaded for them to play\, a new game created by none other than the missing Elle. \nOne click\, and Liberty\, Vera\, and O are ported into Morning Glory\, an ever-evolving botanical fantasy coded with their lived experiences\, complicated history\, and repressed insecurities. Unbeknownst to the others\, O can’t remember the events surrounding Elle’s disappearance—but within the game\, Elle has sent O a cryptic hint about Morning Glory’s real nature. \nWhile Liberty and Vera defeat increasingly sinister bosses\, O grapples with the secret knowledge that her deepest wish\, to reunite with Elle\, might just come true. But as the girls progress through Morning Glory\, O begins to wonder how well she actually knew any of her former best friends and if she’s ready to confront the hard truths—and dangerous revelations—about Elle in her returning memories. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nLio Min is the acclaimed author of Beating Heart Baby\, a long-time music reporter\, and a fullmetal optimist. They live in Oakland\, California\, and write toward the future. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nKazimir Lee has lived for almost equal amounts of time in Malaysia\, the UK\, and the US. He left Vertigo to become an executive in DC Entertainment’s media team\, where he started and oversaw DC’s TV department. His critical and commercial horor book Infidel marked his first major work as a comics writer. His current work with Image Comics is the Eisner- and Harvey-winning The Good Asian\, which he’s currently adapting for television with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. \n \nJ. Holtham is an American screenwriter\, best known for his work on TV shows such as Cloak and Dagger\, Jessica Jones\, and Supergirl. He recently broke into Marvel Comics with Bishop- War College\, and is bringing back fan favorite nineties character\, Night Thrasher\, for his first solo series in 30 years. \nAfrican-American cartoonist Michael Lee Harris is one of indie comics’ most singular voices. A jack of all trades\, he is the creator\, writer\, and artist of Black Hitler and Choco Leche while also illustrating such eclectic and distinct titles as The Black Wraith\, Berlin\, and 1945: The True Untold Story in his unique style. \n \nIn 2013\, Michael Walsh broke into comics with the Image Comics book series COMEBACK. Shortly after\, Michael contributed art on a follow-up comic to the hit television series The X-Files for IDW. Then\, in the following years\, he worked primarily with Marvel Comics on superhero properties such as Spider-Man\, The Avengers and the X-Men. He also adapted the Star Wars film The Last Jedi as a comic book mini-series. And created art for the DC/Dark Horse crossover event comic\, Black Hammer/Justice League. \nIn 2021\, Michael returned to creator-owned comics\, creating the hit ongoing Image series THE SILVER COIN and the viral webcomic The Sleep Stories. In 2022\, he released his middle-grade fantasy original graphic novel The Oates & The Elphyne\, published by Humanoids BIG.

SUMMARY:Family Storytelling Workshop By Natalia Nakazawa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a storytelling experience rooted in myth\, imagination\, and family legacy.\n\n\nArtist Workshop: Family Storytelling \nSunday\, August 17\, 2025 | TBD \nJoin us for a storytelling experience rooted in myth\, imagination\, and family legacy. We’ll read the ancient Japanese tale of Urashima Taro\, a story dating back to the 8th century about a fisherman whose life is forever changed after meeting a magical princess in the form of a turtle. Inspired by this myth\, families will have the chance to imagine themselves as a 10\,000-year-old yokai\, the minogame\, a mystical being who has witnessed centuries of human experience. \nIntergenerational Storytelling: \nReflect on the wisdom passed down through generationWhat is something you learned from your ancestors? How has that knowledge shaped who you are today? What is your vision for a sustainable future? What do you hope to pass on to your children? \nArt-Making: Collagraph Printing: \nTogether\, we’ll create collagraph prints of woven patterns on Tyvek\, merging ancestral memory with tactile expression. \nAbout Natalia Nakazawa: \nNatalia Nakazawa (b. 1982\, Charlotte\, NC) is a Queens-based interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans painting\, textiles\, and social practice. As a child of Latin American (Uruguayan) and Asian (Japanese American\, Yonsei) diasporas\, she draws on complex cultural legacies to explore identity\, migration\, and storytelling. Through collaborative\, community-driven projects\, Nakazawa blurs the boundaries between education\, activism\, and art\, inviting collective participation. Her jacquard textiles incorporate images from open-access museum collections\, often highlighting historical moments of cultural exchange. These works serve as tactile archives; places to critically engage with memory. \nAbout the Fellowship: \nThe Socrates Annual Fellowship and exhibition reflects Socrates’ founding commitment to artistic experimentation and excellence\, while also nurturing artists’ careers. Artists are selected through an open call and receive financial support\, access to Socrates’ outdoor studios and technical support\, and inclusion in a Park-wide exhibition. Since 2001\, 279 artists have participated with many subsequently receiving further commissions for public art projects. The Socrates Annual Fellowship & Exhibition is one of the Park’s longest running programs and is an important training ground for early career artists to gain experience creating art in the public realm. \nThis year’s Fellowship will respond to the theme “Up/rooted\,” which explores the complexities of uprooting species for long-term sustainability and resilience. The term “uprooted” evokes the tension between dislocation and resilience. “Up” signifies the act of lifting away\, while “root” refers to the hidden systems below the ground—anchoring life and absorbing essential nutrients. This duality invites us to reflect on the implications of relocation and adaptation\, exploring how when done thoughtfully it can foster new growth and understanding. In what ways can we foster regeneration while acknowledging and mitigating the losses within our ecological and social landscapes? How might we navigate the delicate balance between ecological preservation and community needs to create a more resilient future?

And until she found herself at the mercy of a predatory colleague\, Yona was one of their top representatives. Now on the verge of losing her job\, she’s given a proposition: take a paid “vacation” to the desert island of Mui and pose as a tourist to assess the company’s least profitable holiday. \nWhen she uncovers a plan to fabricate an extravagant catastrophe\, she must choose: prioritize the callous company to whom she’s dedicated her life\, or embrace a fresh start in a powerful new position? An eco-thriller with a fierce feminist sensibility\, The Disaster Tourist introduces a fresh new voice to the United States that engages with the global dialogue around climate activism\, dark tourism\, and the #MeToo movement.
