SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

SUMMARY:Climate: Premal Shah and Kinari Webb: Small Dollar\, Big Impact - Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:The climate doesn’t care where emissions cuts come from; what matters is that the world transitions to renewable energy quickly and cheaply. If it’s significantly cheaper to install solar panels in India than on a rooftop in California\, then isn’t that where they should be built? \nIn 2005\, Premal Shah co-founded Kiva.org\, a global anti-poverty effort that has loaned more than $2 billion for low-income entrepreneurs in 80 countries. He recently applied a similar microfinance model to climate\, creating renewables.org\, with the goal of leveraging small amounts of money for the greatest impact. \nKinari Webb saw a similar opportunity in rain forest communities around the world. Currently\, less than 1 percent of climate finance goes to these communities\, yet transferring funds directly to the local people with the greatest stake in preserving their land can have outsized impact. \nWhere does the climate dollar go furthest? Join Climate One’s Greg Dalton for an illuminating and encouraging conversation with Premal Shah and Kinari Webb.

SUMMARY:Asian American Psychological Association Convention in Denver\, CO
DESCRIPTION:In Resistance\, We Find Liberation. In Community\, We Find Joy.\nIt’s hard to find joy in the midst of activism and resistance\, and yet our movements depend on holding onto joy – together. Resistance is not just about struggle; it is also about healing\, connection\, and the radical act of embracing joy. Our organization seeks to uplift both resistance and joy\, honoring the ways they sustain each other in our collective work. This year’s theme\, “In Resistance\, We Find Liberation. In Community\, We Find Joy\,” brings together our shared commitments to activist scholarship\, collective healing\, and community empowerment. It invites us to explore the ways that joy fuels our resistance\, sustains our activism and scholarship\, and strengthens our communities. As we engage in a long-term struggle against oppression\, we must also create spaces for celebration\, renewal\, and hope. This theme highlights our presidential mission of embracing the full spectrum of our experiences\, recognizing that joy is not merely a byproduct of liberation but an essential part of the process itself. \nWe invite our community of psychologists\, researchers\, scholars\, practitioners\, community workers\, healers\, elders\, and students to share their expertise\, scholarship\, and journeys in navigating these interwoven forces. We document so much pain\, yet joy remains an underexplored and radical force in our work. This convention is an invitation to remember joy\, to reclaim it\, and to embrace it as an integral part of our resistance. As the saying goes… \nIf you want to run fast\, run alone. If you want to run far\, run together. \n

SUMMARY:MOCA CINEMA - Dancing Home 跳進部落的孩子
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Home is a heartfelt documentary tracing the artistic journey of world-renowned Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava.\n\n\nDancing Home is a heartfelt documentary tracing the artistic journey of world-renowned Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava\, a member of one of Taiwan’s Indigenous tribes\, whose work is deeply rooted in nature and indigenous heritage. Presented by the Museum of Chinese in America\, the film follows Bulareyaung’s return to his hometown in Taitung\, Taiwan\, where he found renewal at a time of personal and professional uncertainty. \nA graduate of Taipei National University of the Arts and former dancer with the legendary Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, Bulareyaung later received an Asian Cultural Council fellowship to study in New York in 1998. He went on to choreograph for internationally acclaimed companies\, including the Martha Graham Dance Company. \nIn 2015\, supported by the Luo Manfei Dance Grant\, he founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company—offering a space for indigenous youth\, many without formal training\, to explore contemporary dance. Dancing Home captures their shared journey of self-discovery\, as these young performers reconnect with their roots and\, in doing so\, help Bulareyaung reconnect with his own. \nThe screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Bulareyaung\, focusing on his artistic experiences in New York and his lifelong commitment to uplifting Indigenous communities through dance. \n*This 90-minute documentary is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles. \nThis program is supported by Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York. \n \nABOUT Bulareyaung Pagarlava\nBorn in the Jialan Village in Taitung\, Taiwan\, Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava’s name means “happy warrior.” \nHe dreamed of becoming a dancer at the age of 12\, choreographed his first piece while studying at Taipei National University of the Arts\, and later joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, performing solo works on tours around the world. In 1998\, he received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to study in New York. His choreography has been featured by esteemed companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company in the U.S.\, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, and Cloud Gate 2 in Taiwan. He has also been invited to perform at prestigious international venues\, including the Vancouver Winter Olympics Arts Festival\, the Vail International Dance Festival in the U.S.\, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. His works have been praised internationally for their “wild originality\, humor\, sensuality\, and surprise—making modern dance irresistible.” \nIn 2010\, while taking a curtain call hand-in-hand with the Martha Graham dancers at Lincoln Center\, Bulareyaung thought to himself\, “How wonderful it would be to be holding hands with my own people.” That wish became a mission. In 2015\, he returned to his hometown in Taitung and founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company (B.D.C.). Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities and rooted in a landscape between mountains and sea\, B.D.C. empowers local youth who love to dance. Through the exploration of voice and movement\, the company develops a unique vocabulary of indigenous contemporary dance.

Our studio also hosts educational events and workshops on print and publishing-related topics throughout the year. \nOur work aims to center the book as a form of art\, rather than a vehicle for art. Projects begin from a thoughtful engagement with source content\, and are informed by our ongoing research and experimentation in print\, materiality\, and fabrication. \nSmall Editions’ books are held in publicly accessible collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Museum of Modern Art\, The Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Brooklyn Museum\, The Walker Art Center\, Harvard University\, Yale University\, RISD\, and MICA\, among others. \nSuperblooom* (stylized with three o’s and an asterisk) is a Vietnamese multimedia collective of Vietnamese-Americans helping to foster a dialogue on the Vietnamese/Asian diaspora and the Global South through photography\, text\, mixed media\, and design. Through this collective\, we are cutting through the media\, the noise\, the lies\, the myths\, and adding to the conversation of Southeast Asian artistry. We are here to connect\, create\, and inspire a superblooom. \nCalipso Press is a risograph studio\, publishing platform\, and artistic collective founded by Eva Parra and Camilo Otero. Established in 2015 in Cali\, Colombia and currently based between Cali and New York\, Calipso explores publishing as a site for research\, collaboration\, and critical imagination. \nCalipso’s practice centers on the book as a space for experimentation and conversation\, treating printed matter not only as a format but as a methodology. From 2015 to 2022\, Calipso hosted a residency program dedicated to expanded publishing and print-based inquiry\, welcoming artists\, writers\, and researchers to develop projects that blur the boundaries between disciplines\, formats\, and geographies. \nCalipso Press has participated in international art book fairs including the New York Art Book Fair\, UNFOLD Shanghai\, Libros Mutantes Madrid\, and Rrreplica México\, and has curated contemporary art and publishing projects such as Post-Digital Mimeography (Colombia Biennial\, 2016)\, No Room for Books (Brazil\, 2017)\, and soft revolution (Madrid\, 2014). \nLucky Risograph is an Asian and Hispanic-owned print press and design studio based in DUMBO\, Brooklyn. Since our establishment in 2019\, we have continued incorporating the eco-conscious\, accessible\,and affordable nature of risograph printing into our everyday practice. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAAAinA’s general programming and operations are funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, the Vilcek Foundation\, and other foundations and individuals.

Locke \nChairman and Member of the Committee of 100 \nFormer Governor of Washington State\, Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to China \n▦ Moderator: \nPeter Young\, CEO\, Young & Partners\, Committee of 100 Member and Board Member\, Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \n▦ Time: \n6:00 pm Eastern Time \nThe interview will be moderated by Peter Young\, Committee of 100 member and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program. The broadcast will be 45 minutes long. \n▦ Speaker Bios: \nGary T. Locke \nChairman and Member of the Committee of 100 \nFormer Governor of Washington State\, Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to China \nAmerican born Gary Locke is the son of a Chinese immigrant and an American politician\, attorney\, and former diplomat from the State of Washington\, he has had a long and distinguish political career and record of defending human rights. Locke served as the 21st governor of Washington from 1997 to 2005\, where he was the first Chinese American governor as well as the first Asian American governor in the continental U.S. During the Obama administration\, Locke served as Secretary of Commerce from 2009 to 2011\, and as Ambassador to China from 2011 to 2014\, the first Chinese American to serve in the role. He is a graduate of Yale University and received a law degree from Boston University Law School. \nWhen asked if there is place for Asian Americans in politics\, Locke had this to say: “I think our native cultures have emphasized respect for and care of our elders\, but also focusing on education. But my overall response is that Asian Americans are part and parcel of the great success of America. Our grandparents came over in the 1800s to work on the railroads\, work the lumber camps\, goldmines\, worked in the canneries\, farmland that most people thought could never raise a crop\, worked as merchants in cities that were just emerging. They fought in world wars\, died for our freedoms and our liberties. Asian Americans have given our blood\, sweat and tears to the communities and to this country. There’s a prosperity that we on the west coast enjoy. So much of the prosperity and progress of the western states is because of the blood\, sweat and tears of Asian Americans. From doing the dirty work to fighting in our world wars and contributing to our society now as doctors\, researchers\, people in high tech\, as innovators\, in all different professions. We have every right\, indeed a responsibility\, to help set the policies that will move our communities and our nation forward.” \n▦ Moderator and Chair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \nPeter Young \nCEO\, Young & Partners \nCommittee of 100 Member and Board Member \nChair of the Committee of 100 Conversations Program \nPeter Young is CEO of Young & Partners\, a boutique investment banking firm focused on the life science and chemical industries. SUMMARY:Author Talk The Midnight Shift by Cheon Seon-Ran
DESCRIPTION:A bestseller in Korea\, The Midnight Shift by Cheon Seon-Ran is a biting\, fast-paced vampire murder mystery exploring queer love and the consequences of loneliness. \nWhen four isolated elderly people die back-to-back at the same hospital by jumping out of the sixth-floor window\, Su-Yeon doesn’t understand why she’s the only one at her precinct that seems to care. But her colleagues at the police force dismiss the case as a series of unfortunate suicides due to the patients’ loneliness. But Su-Yeon doesn’t have the privilege of looking away: her dearest friend\, Grandma Eun-Shim\, lives on the sixth floor\, and Su-Yeon is terrified that something will happen to her next. \nAs Su-Yeon begins her investigation alone\, she runs into a mysterious woman named Violette at the crime scene. Violette claims to be a vampire hunter\, searching for her ex-lover\, Lily\, and is insistent that a vampire is behind the mysterious deaths. Su-Yeon is skeptical at first\, but when a fifth victim jumps from the window\, her investigation reveals the body was completely drained of blood. Desperate to discover the cause of the deaths\, Su-Yeon considers Violette’s explanation-that something supernatural is involved. \nA gripping mystery\, The Midnight Shift overflows with commentary about societal isolation and loneliness\, the sharp knife of grief\, and the effects of marginalization. \nIn this episode of Author Talks\, Cheon Seon-Ran discusses her career in Korea and the English translation of her novel.

DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Beating Heart Baby\, an immersive novel following three estranged high schoolers who are pulled into a video game to pursue the disappearance of their friend\n \nThree years ago\, Elle (the “E” in the self-proclaimed L.O.V.E. Club) disappeared from Calendula\, an affluent Chinese American suburb in inland California.
