SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

SUMMARY:Documentary: Slumlord Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:NY Theatrical Premiere: Documentary: Slumlord Millionaire \nDOC NYC 2024 Audience Award Winner \nSpecial Q&As after some screenings \nRent in Manhattan\, NYC has reached $5000\, surpassing the median rent nationwide. Experts predict it will only climb. As rents increase\, some landlords have become more aggressive in pushing long-term tenants to leave their homes. Landlords ignore repairs\, turn off heat and gas\, and refuse to eliminate vermin. Their goal? To make apartments so uninhabitable\, residents are forced out. The landlord can then deregulate the apartment\, charging market rate\, raking in higher profits. These actions drive up costs in the already unaffordable market and displace families who make up the fabric of the neighborhood\, changing communities forever. Slumlord Millionaire follows the stories of the Bravo family who have been in a legal battle with their landlord for 15 years; Janina Davis\, a former supermodel trying to reclaim her home after a deed theft scam; Ren Ping Chen\, a resident of Chinatown who fears his historic community may disappear after the construction of four luxury towers; and Moumita Ahmed whose city council campaign was viciously targeted by real estate developer billionarires. Each story is a David vs. Goliath-type battle that exposes the human toll of gentrification. \nDirected by Steph Ching & Ellen Martinez 2024 86 min\nProduced by Ellen Martinez\, Steph Ching and Nicole Tsien U.S. English\, Spanish\, Mandarin\, Cantonese

SUMMARY:Community Action: Resist the U.S. Census Bureau Reclassification
DESCRIPTION:Join us for resource sharing and letter-writing to your local reps and media outlets as a call for action against unjust reclassification!\n\n\nThis is a virtual event; Zoom information will be emailed to attendees closer to the date! \nCommunity Action: Resist the U.S. Census Bureau Reclassification \nDid you know? The U.S. Census Bureau is using the MARC (Modified Age and Race Census) data files to reclassify folks who selected “Some Other Race” or multiple race categories without our consent. The data doesn’t lie; the number of people who identify as two or more races has decreased from 33.8 million to14.6 million… while those identifying as white increased by 40.5 million. \nGather with community to condemn the unjust use of the MARC data files to reclassify data collected in the U.S. 2020 Census. This will be an interactive\, virtual event where folks will actively participate in gathering contact information for their local representatives and media outlets as well as writing letters for a call to action against the MARC method. \nAbout the Facilitator: Dante Comet (She/Her) is a racial justice advocate based in the unceded\, ancestral lands of the Munsee tribe of the Lenni Lenape people known as Lenapehoking (colonially known as Manhattan\, New York).\nShe is currently part of AAJIL’s Core Team and facilitates a Community Lab called Mixed Asian Multitudes. Her passions lie in exploring “mixed” Asian advocacy and identity as well as building bridges for shared liberation.

SUMMARY:Tracing Your Chinese Roots Across Borders – The Canadian Connection for US Families
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Canada had its own version of the Chinese Exclusion Act\, similar to the one passed in the United States in 1882? \nJoin us for a fascinating talk with Linda Yip\, Accredited Genealogist®\, as she explores how both countries restricted Chinese immigration — and what that means for family history research today. \nThe Canadian government kept detailed records on every Chinese immigrant\, but for many years\, these records were hard to access. Linda has spent years working to make these records available to the public. \nShe’ll also share helpful tips on how to research your Chinese ancestry across both Canadian and U.S. borders. \nThis webinar will be recorded and available to registrants.
