SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

SUMMARY:AAPI Art and Power Intersect: Creative Media for Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Hear from artists who uplift AANHPI voices\, help inform our communities\, and advocate for our rights through their work at this virtual event on Friday\, May 30th 2 PM – 3 PM ET. As we close out Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM)\, we reflect on how AAPI women and gender expansive people use diverse media to empower our communities and inspire acts of resistance\, throughout history and today. We’ll discuss the power of art in movements and why this is especially resonant with and critical for AAPI communities. Panelists will discuss how AAPI artists are using their platforms to change the world; the idea that art is intrinsically “political”; and the history of art in movement work. There will be time for Q&A at the end of the panel. Please register to be able to submit questions.\n\n\nPanel: \n\nNatalie Bui\nJanet S. Kim\nAmanda Phingbodhipakkiya

SUMMARY:Photo Exhibit: The Lams of Ludlow St
DESCRIPTION:The Lams of Ludlow Street\nThomas Holton \nBAXTER ST is pleased to present The Lams of Ludlow Street\, a solo exhibition by photographer Thomas Holton\, presented as part of the organization’s Mid-Career Initiative. Spanning over two decades\, this deeply personal body of work chronicles the evolving lives of a single Chinese-American family in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, offering an intimate exploration of identity\, belonging\, and the everyday moments that shape our understanding of home. \nSince 2003\, Holton has immersed himself in the life of the Lam family\, capturing both the private and public dimensions of their world with an unfiltered\, empathetic lens. What began as an artistic inquiry into his own Chinese heritage has evolved into a lifelong commitment to storytelling—one that reflects the complexities of family\, migration\, and cultural hybridity in contemporary America. \nA lifelong New Yorker of mixed Chinese and American descent\, Holton has long grappled with a sense of detachment from his Chinese roots. His photographic journey with the Lams became both a creative and personal act of connection\, a way to bridge the gaps in his own identity through the lens of another family’s experiences. The resulting images document adolescence\, marriage\, resilience\, and the quiet\, unscripted moments that define family life. \nPresented at a time when Chinatown\, like many immigrant communities\, faces profound social and economic shifts\, The Lams of Ludlow Street serves as both a visual archive and a meditation on what it means to belong. Holton’s images remind us of the power of long-term storytelling—of what it means to bear witness to time\, change\, and human connection. \nPhoto credit: Thomas Holton

SUMMARY:Community Archives: Preserving & Protecting AAPI History
DESCRIPTION:Fewer than 25% of all Asian Americans say they are familiar with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history. Today\, as immigrant communities face renewed threats to their rights and safety\, the teaching and study of U.S. history remains a cultural flashpoint. \nHow do AAPI-led community archives preserve and protect forgotten AAPI history\, and protect community stories from being lost? How are community archivists navigating a changing funding climate\, and how can general-interest in-language and community news outlets partner with AAPI community archives to contextualize today’s changing political landscape and to engage their audiences? \nJoin us for a special discussion and interactive workshop with Filipino American\, Japanese American\, and South Asian American community archivists\, as we commemorate AAPI Heritage Month. \n————————- \nThe Asian Media Initiative (AMI) is the first national program dedicated to building visibility and sustainability in in-language and community-based news media for and by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.
