SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Propaganda\, Communication and Empire: Western Intervention in Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Propaganda\, Communication and Empire: Western Intervention in Afghanistan (Routledge\, 2025) interrogates the mediatized politics of western intervention in Afghanistan\, to gain a deeper understanding of the occupation within the broader transition toward a multipolar global order. \nAccurate histories of western interventions and regional realities are often obscured or even eclipsed in the accounts of western mainstream media\, which\, if anything\, tend to rue the withdrawals and lionize the suffering of returning troops. This volume investigates the state’s role in the dark underbelly of the shortsighted interventionist media narrative\, as well as the dehumanizing portrayals of people living in the Afghanistan–Pakistan region. \nChapter themes: \n\nCritically evaluates the narrative of the Global War on Terror\, as well as the wars launched after 9/11 that destabilized the Middle East.\nContextualize developments in Afghanistan with a historical framework that will problematize linear narratives that are mobilized in support of interventions.\nRe-present specific aspects of the geopolitical and humanitarian consequencea that have eluded mainstream media workers\, including journalists and Hollywood moviemakers.

SUMMARY:More Than a Meal: Celebrating Korean Food and Community
DESCRIPTION:This panel features moderator and freelance journalist Hannah Bae\, Chef Jae Jung\, and food writer James Park as they dive into the history of Korean food and its impact on New York. The Koreatown neighborhood has humble origins dating back to the 1980s and now dominates 32nd Street in midtown from 6th Avenue all the way to Madison Avenue. This neighborhood has served as the cultural epicenter for Korean culture to spread throughout New York. As much as Korean culture has affected New York\, New York culture has done the same in kind. This can be seen  in how Korean food has been popularized in NYC. This panel will explore the impacts of these collaborating cultures\, and the ways they are different\, unique\, complimentary\, and contradictory.

SUMMARY:NEA Big Read: Interior Chinatown Discussion and Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore themes in Interior Chinatown and begin your own scripted story inspired by the novel.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) presents its 2024-25 NEA Big Read initiative\, featuring Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu\, a National Book Award winner. \nThis April\, join us for an engaging book discussion and writing workshop led by educator Alice Fung. This interactive program will explore literary appreciation and feature a dynamic writing activity inspired by the novel. Participants will discuss themes of family history\, the immigrant experience\, and storytelling as a means of addressing real-world challenges. All attendees will receive a FREE copy of Interior Chinatown. This event is open to all\, and no prior writing experience is required. \nCentered around the theme Where We Live\, MOCA has been hosting a series of free\, multidisciplinary public programs including talks and community events with artists\, performers\, and scholars. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. \nAbout Interior Chinatown \nWillis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son\, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day\, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant\, where Black and White\, a procedural cop show\, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here\, too\, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it? \nAfter stumbling into the spotlight\, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known\, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown\, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal\, exploring the themes of pop culture\, assimilation\, and immigration—Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu’s most moving\, daring\, and masterful novel yet. \nAbout Charles Yu \nCharles Yu is the author of four books\, including his latest\, Interior Chinatown\, which won the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction\, was shortlisted for the Le Prix Médicis étranger\, and longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. He has received the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Award\, been nominated for two Writers Guild of America awards for his work on the HBO series Westworld\, and has also written for shows on FX\, AMC\, Facebook Watch\, and Adult Swim. His fiction and non-fiction have appeared in a number of publications including the New Yorker\, the New York Times magazine\, the Atlantic\, Wired\, Time and Ploughshares.

DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Roohi Choudhry’s Outside Women\, featuring Mona Eltahawy and Yashica Dutt\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a powerful celebration of Roohi Choudhry’s incandescent debut novel Outside Women\, a sweeping\, century-spanning story of feminist resistance\, radical kinship\, and migrant solidarity. \nChoudhry will be joined by Mona Eltahawy (The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls) and Yashica Dutt (Coming Out as Dalit) for an evening of readings and conversation on building transnational feminist community and writing toward justice. Together\, these three writers—whose work has shaped movements across borders—will reflect on the themes of Outside Women: finding courage in sisterhood\, defying silence across generations\, and the revolutionary possibilities of standing together. \n__ \nSet in South Africa\, Pakistan\, and New York City\, Outside Women weaves together the lives of Sita\, an indentured laborer in 1890s Durban\, and Hajra\, a Pakistani scholar in exile a century later\, each forced to reckon with the cost of fighting for a stranger. Lyrical\, gripping\, and deeply tender\, Outside Women is “riveting… an incisive story of how change happens” (Publishers Weekly) and a radiant exploration of what it means to risk everything for liberation. \nDon’t miss this urgent and electric evening with three of the boldest feminist voices writing today. \n__ \nRoohi Choudhry was born in Pakistan and grew up in southern Africa. She holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan and is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship and residencies at Hedgebrook and Djerassi. She worked as a researcher in criminal justice reform and public health\, wrote for the United Nations\, and facilitates creative writing workshops for interfaith groups\, schools\, libraries\, and community organizations. Her stories and essays have appeared in Ploughshares\, Callaloo\, Longreads\, and the Kenyon Review. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.\nFind out more at roohichoudhry.com. \nMona Eltahawy is a feminist author\, commentator and disruptor of patriarchy. Her latest book is an anthology on menopause she has edited called Bloody Hell! And Other Stories: Adventures in Menopause from Around the World. Her first book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (2015) targeted patriarchy in the Middle East and North Africa and her second The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls (2019) took her disruption worldwide. Her commentary has appeared in media around the world and she is founder and editor-in-chief of the newsletter FEMINIST GIANT. \nYashica Dutt is the award-winning author of Coming Out as Dalit\, an internationally acclaimed journalist and among the leading global voices on caste. Dutt’s work has been published in the New York Times\, Foreign Policy and The Atlantic\, and she has been featured on the BBC\, The Guardian and PBS Newshour. Her writing has been part of Pen America’s India at 75 anthology that featured prominent Indian writers looking back on India’s history in its 75th year of independence\, and a collection titled Our Freedoms: Essays and Stories from India’s Best Writers. Coming Out as Dalit was published in the South Asian subcontinent in 2019\, and a revised and the updated edition was released by Beacon Press in 2024. It is an enduring best-seller and is currently part of the curriculum in over 50 colleges and universities worldwide\, including Harvard University\, UC Berkeley\, and UC Davis. Dutt is currently working on her second book on caste in the United States\, also commissioned by Beacon Press. She graduated from Columbia Journalism School \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. SUMMARY:Theater: The Latehomecomer: Performance & Book Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:Literature to Life is a performance-based literacy program that presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of American literary classics. Now\, in partnership with NYPL and the World Literature and Arts Festival\, Literature to Life brings The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang to the stage at Bronx Library Center.\n\nThis  memoir is Kao Kalia Yang’s tribute to her remarkable grandmother whose spirit held them all together. Winner of a PEN USA Literary Award for Nonfiction and Minnesota’s Book Award and Readers Choice Award\, it is the first memoir written by a Hmong-American to be published with national distribution. A Hmong written language was not taught or used until the 1950s\, so author Kao Kalia Yang plays a large role in bringing the culture into the realm of literature.\n\n\nThe Story \nTold with the immediacy of the author as a young girl\, born in the Ban Vinai Refugee camp in Thailand\, Kao Kalia arrives in the United States when she is six. The story follows her journey from a quiet\, reticent student struggling to speak English while facing racial discrimination\, to a self-empowered young woman claiming her voice to tell the untold story of her people. \nIn Performance \nAccomplished Hmong actress and traditional Flower Singer\, Gaosong Heu\, brings this powerful\, personal story to life\, with her musical talent and knowledge of Hmong culture. The performance tells a universal story of immigration\, through the specific lens of this ancient culture inextricably bound to the history of the war in Vietnam. \nFree Books: Plus\, pick up a free copy of The Latehomecomer by Kao Kalia Yang! Giveaway books will be available while supplies last. All giveaways are first come\, first served and limited to one per person.\nThis event will take place in person.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: "The Monkey King in Chinatown" by AAPI Comic Book and Graphic Novel Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Monkey King is the epitome of tricksterdom. First appearing in the 14th-century Chinese novel\, “Journey to the West\,” the character born as Sun Wukong embodies rebellion\, individualism\, and daring. He’s also the inspiration behind the stunning works in this exhibition. \nCurator Jerry Ma’s modern Monkey King idea began with his first exhibition at Pearl River Mart\, A CHINATOWN ODYSSEY (which inspired his graphic novel). This solo show was his reimagining of the mythical creature and his legendary cohorts on adventures — and misadventures — throughout NYC’s Chinatown. \nThis new exhibition\, featuring the works of eight renowned AAPI comic book and graphic novel artists\, furthers those adventures. The pieces reimagine the simian folk hero as everything from a punk rocker to a dancing king to a ferocious b-baller. They place him in iconic Chinatown spots\, like Columbus Park with its Chinese chess enthusiasts\, the Canal Street subway station (complete with pizza rat)\, a lively dim sum eatery\, and the Transfiguration Church and beloved Hop Kee restaurant. \nThey connect the past with the present\, bringing a Chinese legend into a Chinese American community\, and beyond. They make him part of that community. Eating\, dancing\, playing\, and laughing alongside its members. \nThe exhibition also features the artists’ works from their careers as comic book and graphic novel artists\, and is accompanied by installations in Chelsea Market and the outdoor tables of the Meatpacking District. Both framed and unframed prints are available for purchase. \nThe featured artists: \n\nBernard Chang\nSean Chen\nCliff Chiang\nSoo Lee\nHoward Ma\nJerry Ma (curator)\nJerome Opeña\nKimberly Wang

The poetry collection uses persona\, speculation\, and the golden shovel form as a means of moving Vietnamese voices from the periphery to the center. The speaker’s disownment raises questions about the challenges of using parents as poetic subjects\, telling familial stories to a broader public\, and the meaning of forgiveness. \nCathy Linh Che is a Vietnamese American writer and multidisciplinary artist. She is the author of Split\, winner of the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America and the Best Poetry Book Award from the Association of Asian American Studies\, An Asian American A to Z: A Children’s Guide to Our History\, and Becoming Ghost. SUMMARY:Symposium on "Healing During Uncertainty: Asian American Mental Health"
DESCRIPTION:This symposium explores how identity\, culture\, history\, and systemic factors shape mental health in Asian communities. \nThe Asian American / Asian Research Institute’s 2025 symposium\, co-organized with NYU Steinhardt\, explores the intersections of identity\, culture\, history\, and systemic factors in shaping mental health experiences within Asian and Asian American communities. Centered around three key themes\, the symposium aims to address both longstanding and emerging challenges while equipping attendees with insights and practical strategies to advance mental health support. \n\n\nBuilding on the spirit of AAARI’s 2004 conference on “Asian American / Asian Studies: Aspects of Social Interaction\,” this event fosters collaboration between mental health professionals\, students\, and early-career practitioners\, while promoting meaningful discussions on policy implications and systemic change. It also reflects on past efforts and paves the way for a more inclusive\, culturally responsive approach to mental health\, benefiting both current and future generations. Despite challenges in institutionalizing Asian American studies\, CUNY has been a hub for vibrant activism and creative interventions to support AAPI students and communities. \nBy bridging research\, clinical practice\, and community engagement\, the symposium will address race-based trauma and foster partnerships to drive impactful change\, with workshops\, discussions\, and advocacy efforts aimed at advancing AAPI mental health across clinical\, organizational\, and policy levels. Join us for a day of reflection\, connection\, and action to shape the future of mental health within Asian and Asian American communities. \nThemes: \n\nYouth Mental Health: Addressing the mental health needs of Asian and Asian American youth\, with particular attention to cultural expectations and identity development.\nIdentities and Belonging: Exploring how diverse identities shape mental health experiences\, resilience\, and belonging within Asian and Asian American communities by navigating multiple identities\, challenging stereotypes\, and finding affirmation within their communities.\nMigration and Mental Health: Investigating the mental health impacts of migration\, acculturation\, and the challenges of navigating new environments.\n\nLuncheon Keynote Speaker: \n\nMimi Khúc\, Writer\, Scholar\, and Co-Editor of The Asian American Literary Review\n\n\n\n\n
