SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: We Are Chinatown: By Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya
DESCRIPTION:Created by artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya during her civic practice residency with Poster House\, in partnership with Welcome to Chinatown\, and presented by Pearl River Mart\, “We Are Chinatown: A Portrait Of Our Community Rising Through Labor And Love” is an intimate offering that presents a rich and multifaceted portrait of a neighborhood continuously evolving while deeply rooted in its history and cultural heritage. At the heart of the show is a large\, dynamic tapestry — a cascading collage of images\, memories\, poetry\, and threads that stretch across the gallery space\, symbolizing the interconnectedness of Chinatown’s past\, present\, and future. Complementing this work are sculptures\, each a reflection of the neighborhood’s textures\, objects\, and symbols. Reminders of the everyday resilience that sustains Chinatown. \nThis body of work also features a public art campaign of intergenerational portraits\, capturing the diverse faces of the community that will appear around the neighborhood. These portraits were created through intimate conversations with residents in their homes\, restaurants\, and shops\, preserving their personal histories and offering a window into the neighborhood’s enduring vitality. The portraits transcend individual likenesses\, instead capturing the shared experiences\, aspirations\, and challenges that define Chinatown as a living\, breathing space. \n“Amanda’s public work moved me at the darkest times during the pandemic\,” says Pearl River Mart President Joanne Kwong. “I was driving around the city for hours\, making deliveries for online orders\, checking on employees\, and donating PPE to hospitals. Seeing her bold and colorful work around the city gave me strength and a jolt of happiness and purpose\, and for that I am so thankful. “Now to be able to exhibit her work in our gallery is a privilege and an honor. Amanda is outspoken and daring as an artist. And this show\, though a bittersweet reminder of that difficult time\, is also joyous and hopeful in its celebration of the resilience of Chinatown.”

SUMMARY:Poetry as Solidarity\, Art as Constellation - Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW at the Guggenheim Museum for a generative poetry workshop led by Courtney Faye Taylor!\n\n\nIn collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum’s Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers exhibition\, AAWW is excited to present Poetry as Solidarity\, Art as Constellation\, a writing workshop led by Courtney Faye Taylor. This generative poetry workshop will explore multidisciplinary thinking\, collaborative writing\, and the through lines between Black and Asian experiences\, drawing on personal narratives\, history\, and visual art. Through prompts and in conversation with Rashid Johnson’s exhibition\, participants will pull and weave threads of solidarity\, creating a new constellation of written and visual work. Following the workshop\, participants will be invited to read their work in the Guggenheim Museum’s rotunda. Please reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for assistance if you are able to join but the registration price is prohibitive. \nThis workshop is part of an ongoing partnership between AAWW and the Guggenheim Museum that aims to focalize Black-Asian solidarity through poetry\, bringing together poets and artists whose work engages with themes of social alienation\, rebirth\, and cultural dialogue. \n__ \nAbout the Workshop Leader\nCourtney Faye Taylor is the author of Concentrate (Graywolf Press\, 2022)\, winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, the T.S. Eliot Four Quartets Prize\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and a finalist for the NAACP Image Awards\, the Lambda Literary Awards\, and other honors. Her writing and visual art can be found in Poetry\, The Nation\, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art online and elsewhere. Recipient of a 2024 MacDowell Fellowship in fiction and the 92Y Discovery Prize\, Courtney lives in Atlanta\, GA. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nFor nearly 30 years\, artist Rashid Johnson (b. 1977\, Chicago) has cultivated a diverse body of work that draws upon an array of disciplines such as history\, philosophy\, literature\, and music. This major solo exhibition highlights Johnson’s role as a scholar of art history\, a mediator of Black popular culture\, and as a creative force in contemporary art. \nAlmost 90 works—from black-soap paintings and spray-painted text works to large-scale sculptures\, film\, and video—will fill the museum’s rotunda\, including Sanguine\, a monumental site-specific work on the building’s top ramp with an embedded piano for musical performances. Additionally\, a dynamic program of events\, developed in collaboration with community partners across New York City\, will activate a sculptural stage on the rotunda floor. \nThe exhibition is organized by Naomi Beckwith\, the Guggenheim’s Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator\, and Andrea Karnes\, Chief Curator\, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth\, Fort Worth\, Texas\, with additional support from Faith Hunter\, Guggenheim Curatorial Assistant. \nLead support for Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers is provided by \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY\nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. SUMMARY:Book Talk: William Gow — Performing Chinatown: Hollywood\, Tourism\, and the Making of a Chinese American Community
DESCRIPTION:Roosevelt House\, along with the Asian American Studies Program\, is pleased to present a discussion with Dr. William Gow about his new book\, Performing Chinatown: Hollywood\, Tourism\, and the Making of a Chinese American Community. He will be joined in conversation by Dr. Charles Tien\, Director of the Asian American Studies Program and professor of political science at Hunter College.\n\n\n\n\nIn Performing Chinatown\, Gow examines how Chinese Americans in Los Angeles leveraged performances in Hollywood films and Chinatown tourist attractions to shape perceptions of race and national belonging during the Chinese exclusion era (1875-1965). Drawing on oral history interviews\, archival research\, and family collections\, the book traces the relationship between Los Angeles Chinatown and Hollywood\, demonstrating how everyday Chinese Americans used performance to shape dominant perceptions of Asian Americans. \nDr. William Gow is a community historian with the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and an assistant professor of Ethnic Studies at California State University\, Sacramento.
