SUMMARY:Broadway: Maybe Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® winner Darren Criss (Little Shop of Horrors) returns to Broadway alongside Helen J Shen in the new romantic musical comedy MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.  A New York Times Critics’ Pick \nInside a one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul\, Oliver lives a happily quiet life\, listening to jazz records and caring for his favorite plant. But what else is there to do when you’re a Helperbot 3\, a robot that has long been retired and considered obsolete? When his fellow Helperbot neighbor Claire asks to borrow his charger\, what starts as an awkward encounter leads to a unique friendship\, a surprising adventure\, and maybe even…love? \nWinner of the Richard Rodgers Award\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is the offbeat and captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty who discover that even robots can be swept off their feet. Helmed by visionary director and Tony Award® winner Michael Arden (Parade\, Once on This Island)\, with a dazzling scenic design by Dane Laffrey (A Christmas Carol) and book\, music\, and lyrics by the internationally acclaimed duo Will Aronson and Hue Park\, MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is a fresh\, original musical about the small things that make any life worth living.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Who is in our corner when we need help?\nWho do we call on when we are down?\nWho backs us up when we are cornered?\nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Through interviews and writings from the artists\, In Our Corner highlights these bonds and explores how artist collectives/organizations intersected and fostered connections. \nNovember 16\, 2024 – March 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, November 16\, 2024\, 3-5PM \nThink!Chinatown’s Studio – 1 Pike Street\, New York\, NY 10002 \nPhoto Credit “Untitled” by Sepp Seitz

SUMMARY:Theater: Cymbeline
DESCRIPTION:The National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO) will present an all-femme\, all-Asian American production of Cymbeline in New York City in January–February 2025. Cymbeline is one of Shakespeare’s final plays and is about the British king Cymbeline and his daughter\, Imogen. The production features a modern verse translation by Andrea Thome that brings the play’s language into the present. The director\, Brown-Fried chose an all-femme cast to examine gender identity\, performance\, masculine toxicity\, sexual politics\, and power.  \nIn a world shattered by tyranny and poisoned by misogyny\, Cymbeline tells the story of a young woman’s flight from despair to heroism as she rediscovers her lost siblings and brings order to a kingdom ruled by chaos. Performed by an ensemble of eleven women\, Cymbeline is a story of hope and rebirth in the unlikeliest of circumstances. \nCast: Amy Hill as Cymbeline\, Purva Bedi\, Annie Fang\, Anna Ishida\, Narea Kang\, Jennifer Lim\, KK Moggie\, Maria-Christina Oliveras\, Julyana Soelistyo\, Sarah Suzuki\, and Jeena Yi. \nCreative team: Stephen Brown-Fried as director\, Ant Ma as scenic designer\, Mariko Ohigashi as costume designer\, Yiyuan Li as lighting designer\, and Caroline Eng as sound designer.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: We Are Chinatown: By Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya
DESCRIPTION:Created by artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya during her civic practice residency with Poster House\, in partnership with Welcome to Chinatown\, and presented by Pearl River Mart\, “We Are Chinatown: A Portrait Of Our Community Rising Through Labor And Love” is an intimate offering that presents a rich and multifaceted portrait of a neighborhood continuously evolving while deeply rooted in its history and cultural heritage. At the heart of the show is a large\, dynamic tapestry — a cascading collage of images\, memories\, poetry\, and threads that stretch across the gallery space\, symbolizing the interconnectedness of Chinatown’s past\, present\, and future. Complementing this work are sculptures\, each a reflection of the neighborhood’s textures\, objects\, and symbols. Reminders of the everyday resilience that sustains Chinatown. \nThis body of work also features a public art campaign of intergenerational portraits\, capturing the diverse faces of the community that will appear around the neighborhood. These portraits were created through intimate conversations with residents in their homes\, restaurants\, and shops\, preserving their personal histories and offering a window into the neighborhood’s enduring vitality. The portraits transcend individual likenesses\, instead capturing the shared experiences\, aspirations\, and challenges that define Chinatown as a living\, breathing space. \n“Amanda’s public work moved me at the darkest times during the pandemic\,” says Pearl River Mart President Joanne Kwong. “I was driving around the city for hours\, making deliveries for online orders\, checking on employees\, and donating PPE to hospitals. Seeing her bold and colorful work around the city gave me strength and a jolt of happiness and purpose\, and for that I am so thankful. “Now to be able to exhibit her work in our gallery is a privilege and an honor. Amanda is outspoken and daring as an artist. And this show\, though a bittersweet reminder of that difficult time\, is also joyous and hopeful in its celebration of the resilience of Chinatown.”

SUMMARY:Wigs and Spaces of Intimacy: Korean Migration and the American Street
DESCRIPTION:An Afro Asia Series Program with Min Kyung Lee.  \nPresented by the Institute of Fine Art. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nREGISTER \nFollowing the Korean War\, the military government of South Korea supported industries to improve the dire post-war economic situation. Central to this strategy was to identify export goods that optimized local resources and knowledge\, and that targeted international markets. Among those exports were wigs\, and by the 1960s\, Seoul became the global center for wig manufacturing\, relying on its own female population for hair supplies and cheap labor. These wigs were exported to the US and specifically targeted the growing consumer market of African American women. Moreover\, wig stores were run by new Korean immigrants in urban neighborhoods that were in the process of becoming increasingly Black with white flight to the suburbs and red-lining practices. Parallel to the shifting racial and ethnic geographies in American cities\, South Korea also faced socio-political change in which the women toiling in wig factories started to protest their working conditions. Their political actions would eventually mark the beginning of the Korean democracy movement. This lecture by Professor Min Kyung Lee connects the migration stories of Koreans to those of African Americans\, focusing on their shared spatial practices in wig stores during the Cold War period in the US. \nMin Kyung Lee is associate professor and Chair of the Department of the Growth and Structure of Cities at Bryn Mawr College. Her recent monograph\, The Tyranny of the Straight Line: Mapping Modern Paris (Yale University Press\, 2024) studied the relations between mapping and architecture in nineteenth-century Paris. Her research in this area brings together histories of orthography and quantification with theories of modern architectural and urban representations. Currently\, her work\, Mapping Wigs and Plywood centers on histories of post-war Korean migration as well as developing archival methods with and by diasporic communities. She is a co-founder of the Architecture and Migration group of the European Architectural History Network\, supported by the New Directions Mellon Foundation Fellowship\, and affiliated with research groups at the Courtauld in London and the Kunsthistorische Institut in Florence. \n*This event will not be livestreamed or recorded. \n  \nAccessibility note: The Institute of Fine Arts provides reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities. SUMMARY:Our Laundry\, Our Town with Alvin Eng
DESCRIPTION:A talkback\, signing\, and live podcast recording.\n\n\nIn celebration of the recent Broadway revival of Our Town and the Lunar New Year\, The Drama Book Shop presents\, in association with Jay Michaels Global Communications\, “Our Laundry\, Our Town ” – A talkback\, signing\, and live podcast recording. Author/playwright Alvin Eng will be joined in conversation by Shoshana Greenberg from The Thornton Wilder Society. \n \nAbout the Book \nOur Laundry\, Our Town is a memoir that decodes and processes the fractured urban oracle bones of Alvin Eng’s upbringing in Flushing\, Queens\, in the 1970s. Back then\, his family was one of the few immigrant Chinese families in a far-flung neighborhood in New York City. His parents had an arranged marriage and ran a Chinese hand laundry. From behind the counter of his parents’ laundry and within the confines of a household that was rooted in a different century and culture\, he sought to reconcile this insular home life with the turbulent yet inspiring street life that was all around them––from the faux martial arts of TV’s Kung Fu to the burgeoning underworld of the punk rock scene. \n \nIn the 1970s\, NYC\, like most of the world\, was in the throes of regenerating itself in the wake of major social and cultural changes resulting from the counterculture and civil rights movements. And by the 1980s\, Flushing had become NYC’s second Chinatown. But Eng remained one of the neighborhood’s few Chinese citizens who did not speak fluent Chinese. Finding his way in the downtown theater and performance world of Manhattan\, he discovered the under-chronicled Chinese influence on Thornton Wilder’s foundational Americana drama\, Our Town. This discovery became the unlikely catalyst for a psyche-healing pilgrimage to Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China—his ancestral home in southern China—that led to writing and performing his successful autobiographical monologue\, The Last Emperor of Flushing. Learning to tell his own story on stages around the world was what proudly made him whole. \n \nAbout the Author \nALVIN ENG a native NYC author/playwright\, educator and acoustic punk raconteur and was recently named a New York Public Library 2024-25 Long-Term Fellow. During his NYPL Long-Term Fellowship he will research The Opium Wars/opium’s impact on the Chinese diaspora and NYC’s 1970s punk/counterculture for his second memoir/nonfiction book\, Urban Oracle Bones. This research will be undertaken through the dual prisms of author William S. Burroughs’ character\, “Johnny Yen”––immortalized in Iggy Pop’s song\, “Lust For Life”––and Eng’s grandfather’s opium overdose in NYC’s Chinatown. The book will be an expansion of his monologue/song stage work\, HERE COMES JOHNNY YEN AGAIN and companion piece to his memoir\, OUR LAUNDRY\, OUR TOWN. Other books: THREE TREES (Alberto Giacometti historical drama published by No Passport Press); Tokens? The NYC Asian American Experience on Stage (oral history/performance text anthology). Plays and performances seen Off-Broadway\, Paris\, Hong Kong and Guangzhou\, China. Honors include Fulbright Specialist Residency\, City University of Hong Kong; Visiting Professor MFA Creative Writing Program\, Queens College/CUNY; NYSCA/NYFA Fellowships. www.alvineng.com / @alvin.eng8 \n \nAbout the Moderator \nSHOSHANA GREENBERG is a lyricist\, librettist\, and theater journalist. She serves on the board of The Thornton Wilder Society and is also their newsletter editor and social media manager. Musicals: Lyrics for Days of Rage with Hyeyoung Kim and Lightning Man with Jeffrey Dennis Smith. Operas: Librettos for “The Community” with Kevin Cummines (named Best of 2019 by WQXR) and “Margaret” with Paulo Tirol\, both as part of the Opera Lab with NYU and American Opera Projects. Her songs have been heard at various venues from Lincoln Center to Joe’s Pub to the Duplex\, where she performed her one-woman show Not Coming Back. She was a Sokoloff Arts Fellow with Town Stages and Sokoloff Arts in 2018 and has written for American Theatre magazine\, The Interval\, and Women and Hollywood and served as a contributing editor for the musical theater publication\, Musical Theater Today. She also created and hosts the musical theater podcast Scene to Song and has an M.F.A. from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU and a B.A. from Barnard College. \n \nTHE THORNTON WILDER SOCIETY has the twofold purpose of supporting efforts which expand the literary legacy of Thornton Wilder and of encouraging projects which emphasize the timeless importance of literature and drama to world culture. The Thornton Wilder Society appeals to anyone who has an interest in the life and works of Thornton Wilder. The Society is international in its scope\, attracting Wilder fans\, scholars\, critics\, educators and theatrical professionals and amateurs from all over the world. The Society\, in short\, is of interest to all who love Wilder\, his work\, and his belief in the importance of art as a sustaining influence in the world. Penn State University Press publishes biannually the Thornton Wilder Journal containing scholarly articles\, reviews of significant productions\, pieces about Wilder’s life\, and other content of interest to Wilder scholars\, theatre artists\, educators\, and fans. We also keep members up to date on performances\, publications\, and Wilder-related events around the country via The Thornton Wilder Society Monthly Email. The Society has held three international conferences\, and sponsored panels at the annual American Literature Association conference. Our website makes available a wide range of resources for scholars\, teachers\, and theatre artists\, while our Facebook page keeps fans abreast of news and asks Wilder-related fun questions. Finally\, the Society periodically presents the Thornton Wilder Prize; past recipients include Russell Banks (2008)\, Robert MacNeil (2010)\, Rocco Landesman (2013)\, Paula Vogel (2015)\, and Donald Margulies (2018). \n \nWe kindly ask that you review the following information before reserving your spot: \nThis Eventbrite ticket is your reservation for the event. \nPlease note that the purchase of “Our Laundry\, Our Town ” ($18.95) or Alvin Eng’s play“Three Trees” (11.95) is required for entry. \nUpon arrival\, our team will direct you to the register to obtain your copy and complete your admission. \nThe store will begin welcoming guests at 7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Amitava Kumar Discusses My Beloved Life with Katie Kitamura
DESCRIPTION:An absorbing\, exceptionally moving novel that traces the arc of a man’s life\, an ordinary life made exceptional by the fact that he has loved and has been loved in turn. \nJadunath Kunwar’s beginnings are humble\, even inauspicious. In 1935 in a village near George Orwell’s birthplace\, Jadu’s mother\, while pregnant with him\, nearly dies from a cobra bite. When we see Jadu again\, he is in college\, meeting the Sherpa who first summited Everest and wondering what it means to be modern. As his life skates between the mythical and the mundane\, and as changes big and small sweep across India\, Jadu finds meaning in the most unexpected places. He befriends poets and politicians. He becomes a historian. And he has a daughter\, Jugnu\, a television journalist with a career in the United States—whose own story recasts the past in a new light. Piercing\, fleet-footed\, and undeniably resonant\, here is a novel from a singularly gifted writer about how we tell stories and write history\, how individuals play a counterpoint to big movements\, how no single life is without consequence. \nAmitava Kumar was born in Ara\, India\, and grew up in the nearby town of Patna. He is the author of the novel Immigrant\, Montana\, as well as several other books of nonfiction and fiction. He lives in Poughkeepsie\, New York\, and teaches at Vassar College. Photo credit Imrul Islam \nKatie Kitamura’s most recent novel is Intimacies. One of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021 and one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2021\, it was longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. The recipient of a Rome Prize in Literature and the Prix Litteraire Lucien Barriere\, her work has been translated into 21 languages and is being adapted for film and television. Her new novel\, Audition\, will be published in 2025.
