SUMMARY:The Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Dan Lie\, Memory Stick ou Pau de Memória\, 2015. (Image: Edouard Fraipont) \nThe Appearance: Art of the Asian Diaspora in Latin America & the Caribbean is the first exhibition in New York City to center the artistic production of the Asian diaspora in the region from the 1940s to the present. Focusing on postwar and contemporary art\, the exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists from fourteen countries working in a range of artistic mediums including painting\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, and video\, to shed light into strategies and themes that resonate across a wide array of Asian diasporic practice throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. \nThe exhibition embraces and performs the multiple and interrelated meanings embedded in the notion of appearance\, inspired by Japanese Brazilian artist Lydia Okumura’s 1975 print by the same title. From acts of appearing and becoming visible—including different types of apparitions—to the idea of impressions and physical resemblance\, artists in the show grapple with the complexities of negotiating (in)visibility\, revisiting and remaking family archives and stories\, and engaging and reconfiguring spiritual practices. The show also addresses abstraction as a formal strategy linked to language\, the senses\, and the body in the context of the Americas’ postwar art. \nConceived as an appearance in and of itself\, the show sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences and artistic trajectories of Asian diasporic subjects and collectives across Latin America and the Caribbean\, casting them as both grounded in their particular context and constitutive of broader transnational histories. \nTo accompany the show\, we will present a series of public programs and publish a catalogue. \nThis exhibition is co-curated by Tie Jojima\, associate curator and manager of Exhibitions at Americas Society in New York\, and Yudi Rafael\, independent curator and researcher based in São Paulo\, Brazil.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit - Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001)
DESCRIPTION:Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) is an expansive survey of rarely-seen artwork and archival material by artists that constitute and exceed “Asian American\,” a label denoting a cultural and national identity invented in 1968. Utilizing an interdisciplinary and research-driven praxis\, Legacies uncovers how artists of Asian descent have historically negotiated identity in America as a set of situated practices and institutional structures amidst transnational diasporas\, racial phantasms\, and political imaginaries.\n\nPresenting over 90 artists and collectives\, Legacies is the first institutional survey exhibition focusing on artists of Asian descent who were based in New York City.\n\n\nLegacies features works – paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and new media\, among other mediums – that serve to complicate the idea of defining “Asian American art” as singular and static through the lens of art history\, cultural studies\, and sociology. Recognizing that “identity-based” categories of art are bound to the dominant racial ideology and political narrative of a nation\, the exhibition instead focuses on a multiplicity of subjectivities\, political horizons\, and artistic expressions to interrogate life in America.\n\nIn addition to aesthetic concerns such as figuration\, abstraction and materiality\, the exhibition tracks how these artists addressed migration\, displacement\, racism\, cultural autonomy\, Western imperialism\, societal violence\, and representations of sexuality and gender through the decades.\n\nLegacies also constellates three key artist collectives and organizations: Godzilla: Asian American Art Network; the Basement Workshop; and Asian American Arts Centre. All three organizations were artistic\, social\, and political hubs for diasporic Asian artists in New York that intersected with other marginalized communities.\n\nThe exhibition also features newly commissioned installations\, including a large-scale Washington Square Windows installation by new-media artist Shu Lea Cheang connected to the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking film\, Fresh Kill (1994).\n\nFilmmaker Rea Tajiri presents an assemblage sculpture that expands on her groundbreaking History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige (1991)\, a meditation on her family history and Japanese and Japanese American internment during World War II.\n\nOrganized by Howie Chen\, Curator at 80WSE\, Jayne Cole Southard\, PhD.\, CUNY\, and christina ong\, PhD. \n \nProduced by Jon Huron\, 80WSE.  Gini Yu Pei Lee\, Curatorial Assistant. Gracia Brown and Daniella Occhineri\, Research Assistants. Kate Edelson\, Exhibition Registrar.\n \nThe exhibition’s presentation is made possible by Teiger Foundation.  \n\nSpecial thanks for the support of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU\, Squid Frames\, CHENZO.STUDIO\, and Fales Library and Special Collections. Equipment provided in part by Lower East Side Ecology Center and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.\n\n\nImage credit:  Bridge Magazine Vol. 1 No. 6. New York: Basement Workshop\, 1972

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Avani Patel: Connection
DESCRIPTION:Connection is a solo exhibition by Avani Patel\, presented at Evercore’s New York City offices. \nExcerpt from Patel’s artist statement: \n“Art has been an integral part of my life since I was young. I used to go to the theater with my sister for her rehearsals and dance shows. Seeing the colorful costumes\, flowing dresses and festivity of these moments made me feel joyful; I felt as though the colors were speaking to me…I often draw and paint things that I see in my everyday surroundings\, personal experiences\, and memories. I use mark-making and repetition as tools to signify change in nature\, the passage of time\, and the retention and rejection of memory. My work often takes the form of visual studies and drawings that I work on for months as a time. This process helps me understand colors and patterns\, which then allows me to transfer my ideas to large-scale paintings and public projects.” \nFor inquiries\, please email info@cueartfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Who is in our corner when we need help?\nWho do we call on when we are down?\nWho backs us up when we are cornered?\nIn Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond explores the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery\, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years. These relationships range from recently made friendships to lifelong partnerships and even marriage: Kathleen Foster joins Ching Ming Cheung; Charles Luce joins Helen Oji; Howardena Pindell joins Arlan Huang; Shellyne Rodriguez joins Tomie Arai; and Arleen Schloss joins Nina Kuo. To highlight AAAC’s collection and its ongoing solidarity-building\, In Our Corner presents five works by non-Asian American artists from the collection\, Columbia Fiero\, Kitty Katz\, Donald Lipski\, Eva Mantell\, and Sepp Seitz. As the hosting institution for In Our Corner\, Think!Chinatown’s commission of Black Gotham’s Grand Rising and its inclusion in the show demonstrates the organization’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with communities of color. Through interviews and writings from the artists\, In Our Corner highlights these bonds and explores how artist collectives/organizations intersected and fostered connections. \nNovember 16\, 2024 – March 2025 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, November 16\, 2024\, 3-5PM \nThink!Chinatown’s Studio – 1 Pike Street\, New York\, NY 10002 \nPhoto Credit “Untitled” by Sepp Seitz

DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW and graduate students from Sarah Lawrence College to explore the ever-deepening connection between creative practice and community\n\n\nThe Asian American Writers’ Workshop is proud to host this special event\, which brings together graduate students from Sarah Lawrence College who have been exploring an ever-deepening connection between creative practice and community building. At the heart of their commitment to self-expression and engagement with the wider world\, each writer will share new poetry and illuminate outreach projects in-progress. Join us for an inspiring evening of art and action\, reflection and celebration. \n__ \nAditi Narayan hails from India by way of Dubai\, UAE. Her international upbringing has greatly influenced the meanderings in her writing\, as she continues to experiment with voice and push boundaries in her work. She gravitates toward storytelling that not only ponders the extraordinary in the ordinary\, but also explores the complexities and contradictions of what makes us human. While she is a second-year Fiction student in the MFA Writing program at Sarah Lawrence\, her writing wanders in the realms of poetry\, speculative fiction and creative nonfiction. When Aditi is not agonizing over her words (or procrastinating\, depending on how you look at it)\, she is either watching Only Murders in the Building (sparking her own true crime obsession)\, curating her – twenty-fifth? – Spotify playlist of angsty throwbacks\, or finding excuses to show pictures of her dogs. \nBriana Martin is a Bronx Native and first-generation college student. She is currently an MFA student in the Writing program at Sarah Lawrence College. In her free time\, Briana enjoys traveling\, working with plants\, taking naps\, and resting her mind\, body\, and soul. \nChanice Cruz is originally from Brooklyn\, NY but credits Richmond \,VA for introducing her to the slam poetry world and expanding a love for storytelling. She is currently an Open Mic coordinator at Kew & Willow Books in Queens NY and is the co-host for a Latin-x bookish podcast called The Poet and the Reader. Her poems have been published in several literary magazines. She is currently getting her MFA in Poetry at Sarah Lawrence. \nFatimahzahra Nusairee is a writer and photographer from Maryland. She is currently an MFA candidate at Sarah Lawrence College studying poetry. \nJessica Fiorillo is a writer and photographer. For nearly ten years she covered food and travel\, her work appearing in Bon Appetit\, Food & Wine\, Food52\, Self\, Elizabeth Street\, Edible Manhattan\, The Daily Meal and PopSugar. She has a B.A. in psychology from Brown University\, an MBA from UC Berkeley\, and is a Randall Jarrell Fellow in the creative writing MFA program at Sarah Lawrence College. She lives in New York City. \nJulia Kebuladze is a New Jersey native and drives like one. She has always enjoyed playing the violin\, dancing in various unprofessional forms\, eating meals made by her Ukrainian and Georgian grandmothers\, connecting with people / animals / places\, and writing about all of the above and beyond. At the University of Pittsburgh\, she studied writing & music in the city between three rivers she loves deeply\, and now lives in Manhattan as she pursues her MFA in Writing at Sarah Lawrence College. She is still most proud of winning “Best Delegate” at her eighth grade Model UN. \nLilyan LeaVesseur is a writer and artist from Chicago\, IL and Encinitas\, CA. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing at Sarah Lawrence College. \nMarisa Viola is pursuing her MFA in fiction at Sarah Lawrence College. Her background includes work in theater and film as a director\, actor\, and producer. She lives in the woods with her wife\, dog\, and cat\, and regularly hosts backyard visits from bears\, owls\, foxes\, and other beings. \nSamyukta Raghavan is a 21-year old writer based in New York. \nShivani Mutneja is a second-year student in the Creative Writing MFA program at Sarah Lawrence College. Her poems and prose have appeared in Nether Quarterly\, Jellyfish Review\, Two Serious Ladies\, and decomp Journal among others. She is also the Associate Fiction Editor at The Bombay Literary Magazine. \nR. A. Villanueva is the author of two poetry collections: A Holy Dread\, winner of the Alice James Award (forthcoming in 2026) and Reliquaria (University of Nebraska Press\, 2014)\, winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize. Born in New Jersey\, he lives in Brooklyn. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITYAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. We are located on the 6th floor of 112 W 27th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues)\, there is an elevator that will take you directly to our office. To protect our friends with chemical sensitivities\, AAWW is a fragrance-free space. Masks are required for audience members for all AAWW events; if you forget yours\, one will be provided for you. We have three commercial grade air purifiers\, and a quiet room in the back should you need some space from the crowd. Please reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for additional accessibility requests\, including ADA accessible bathrooms\, chairs with added back support\, and beyond. This space is for YOU!

SUMMARY:What Is Cultural Appropriation?
DESCRIPTION:In recent headline news\, actor Simu Liu called out a boba tea company for cultural appropriation saying “There’s an issue of taking something that’s very distinctly Asian in its identity and quote-unquote ‘making it better\,’” \nThe comment generated a lot of feedback from consumers who then chimed in to add their thoughts on what cultural appropriation\, especially in food\, actually means. \nJoin us for a lively discussion with Bay Area brand founders on what their thoughts are on cultural appropriation. \nAbout the Speakers \nOlivia Chen\, co-founder and CMO of Twrl Milk Tea\, is a creative entrepreneur passionate about community building\, storytelling and marketing. An expert in guerrilla marketing\, Olivia has a proven track record in developing brand stories with focus on optimizing messaging\, effective marketing mix\, and maximizing sales conversion. She is passionate about creating positive change and growth while sharing her Taiwanese culture and traditions\, especially Boba Milk Tea\, with the world. Chen holds a B.S. from University of California\, Berkeley\, Haas Business School and an MBA/MA from University of Pennsylvania\, The Wharton School and The Lauder Institute. She led global and domestic product marketing teams at Estee Lauder (Clinique\, Donna Karan Cosmetics\, and Origins) and is a former publicist for Amazon and New York Times bestselling authors. In her spare time\, Olivia is an avid baker and bento creator. \nAruna Lee\, a South Korean native and former Buddhist nun\, founded Volcano Kimchi in 2014 in the heart of San Francisco. Specializing in vegan\, organic kimchi and Korean-inspired fermented foods\, Volcano Kimchi reflects Aruna’s passion for sustainability\, health\, and community. Rooted in her deep values\, Aruna emphasizes high-quality\, eco-friendly ingredients to craft wholesome\, flavorful ferments. Beyond food\, her work is about connection—nurturing a sense of togetherness through the shared love of nourishing meals. Volcano Kimchi isn’t just a business; it’s Lee’s way of promoting health\, sustainability\, and community\, one delicious jar at a time. \nJaneen and Rodrigo Cruz\, the husband-and-wife team behind Kuali. They say: “Our story is rooted in love—for each other\, for our culture\, and for the flavors that remind us of home.” Janeen\, the daughter of Mexican immigrants from El Ejido Hermosillo\, Baja California\, and Rodrigo\, who grew up in the bustling heart of Mexico City\, met over a shared passion for food and tradition. For Rodrigo\, the kitchen is a sacred space where he reconnects with his mamá\, Mely\, and relives memories of México with every dish. It’s where he recreates the vibrant salsas he grew up with—the same flavors that captured Janeen’s heart. As a first-generation Mexican-American\, she hadn’t tasted anything like it: a salsa that truly tasted like México. “In 2020\, with the world at a standstill\, we felt inspired to bring the soulful\, authentic taste of Mexico to the U.S. We couldn’t find anything that captured the bold\, unapologetic flavors we cherish\, so we started Kuali right here in our kitchen in Oakland. Now\, we’re thrilled to share that taste with you\, a taste that makes you say\, ‘esto es México.’ For us\, salsa is life. It’s more than just a condiment; it’s the heart of our table\, our heritage\, and our everyday meals. When you open a jar of Kuali salsa\, you’re tasting the magic that brings us together—our culture\, our story\, and the passion we pour into every batch.” \nModerator: Michele Meow

SUMMARY:From Past Prejudice to Present Policy: The Impact of Land Ownership Exclusion Laws on Diverse Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join Committee of 100 and APA Justice for an insightful discussion on the troubling resurgence of alien land laws — historically discriminatory policies that are reemerging in state legislatures across the U.S. Originally designed to prevent non-citizens\, particularly those from AAPI communities\, from owning property\, these laws are now being reframed as safeguards to national resources. We will discuss whether these laws properly address national security concerns or whether they are merely a pretext that infringes upon civil rights and liberties under the guise of protection. \nOur panel of legal experts and advocates will delve into the history of alien land laws\, examine their renewed impact on vulnerable communities and discuss key cases\, including a bill recently introduced in Florida. Whether you’re a policymaker\, legal professional\, journalist\, or concerned citizen\, this event is essential for anyone committed to upholding justice and equity in America.

SUMMARY:Cold War Memories and Asian American Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will explore how Asian Amer. subjectivity is conditioned by histories and ongoing realities of U.S. imperialism in Asia.\n\n\nCold War Memories and Asian American Poetry\nIn this session we will explore how Asian American subjectivity is conditioned by histories and ongoing realities of U.S. imperialism in Asia. Focusing in particular on the long afterlives of U.S. militarism in Korea and Southeast Asia from 1945-1975\, we will read and discuss four short poems by contemporary Asian American writers of Korean\, Vietnamese\, Hmong\, and Lao descent\, all of whom grapple with intergenerational memories of imperial violence in their homelands. This session will involve discussion among participants. \nOur instructor\, Adhy Kim (He/They)\, is an assistant professor in the Literatures in English Department and Asian American Studies Program at Cornell University. They are broadly interested in how Asian/American literature intersects with multiple imperial histories across Asia\, the Pacific\, and North America.
