He has been involved in multiple media adaptations of his work\, including the short story “Good Hunting\,” adapted as an episode in Netflix’s animated series Love\, Death + Robots; and AMC’s Pantheon\, adapted from an interconnected series of short stories. “The Hidden Girl\,” “The Message\,” and “The Oracle” have also been optioned for development. Liu previously worked as a software engineer\, corporate lawyer\, and litigation consultant. He frequently speaks at conferences and universities on topics including futurism\, machine-augmented creativity\, the history of technology\, and the value of storytelling. Liu lives with his family near Boston\, Massachusetts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlex Shvartsman (moderator) is the author of The Best of All Possible Planets (2026)\, Kakistocracy (2023)\, The Middling Affliction (2022)\, and Eridani’s Crown (2019). Over 150 of his stories and his translations from Russian have appeared in Analog\, Asimov’s Clarkesworld\, F&SF\, Nature\, Reactor\, Strange Horizons\, and several Year’s Best volumes. He won the WSFA Small Press Award for Short Fiction\, and was a three-time finalist for each the Canopus Award for Excellence in Interstellar Fiction and the BSFA Award. For a brief\, glorious moment one of his stories was in development as a live action TV series. He has edited nearly twenty anthologies\, including the long-running Unidentified Funny Objects series\, as well as The Digital Aesthete\, The Cackle of Cthulhu\, Humanity 2.0 and many more.. SUMMARY:Curator’s Talk: Strolling Together in the World of Chinese Art
DESCRIPTION:Join three expert art historians in unraveling China Institute Gallery’s anniversary exhibition\, China Institute Gallery at 60\, 1966–2026: Selections from Three Millennia of Chinese Art. Bringing decades of collective expertise\, the speakers will recount the multifaceted stories and messages embedded within these works. They will unpack their ancient history\, whether as objects of private scholarly treasures or as public assertions of dynastic power\, while also remarking on their modern history in the Gallery’s 122 past exhibitions over the past 60 years. \nThe presentations will span a wide variety of media\, featuring classical paintings and ceramics alongside garden rocks\, jades\, and other small objects that recreate the complete sensory tapestry of Chinese cultural life. \nThrough three keynotes and a panel discussion\, the cherished tradition of scholarly dialogue will be revived. We invite you to stroll alongside our curators\, to observe\, admire\, and contemplate these works in intimate detail. \n\nKeynote One: “Pursuit of the Afterlife”\nSpeaker: Dr. Annette Juliano 朱安耐\nFor the ancient Chinese\, the pursuit of the afterlife meant ensuring the deceased’s transition to another realm. This required anticipating their needs and correctly preparing the tomb.  An ancient sage summarized the process: the deceased were treated “as though dead and yet still alive\, as though gone and yet still present.” Well-cared-for ancestor spirits meant good fortune for living. Neglected spirits turned into implacable ghosts. My discussion will center around the enormous creativity this pursuit inspired in Chinese culture – making objects for the tomb\, such as mingqi (clay spirit objects). I will incorporate objects from the exhibition as well as from other sources. \n\nKeynote Two: “The Scholar’s World”\nSpeaker: Dr. David Ake Sensabaugh 江文苇\nOver the past six decades\, China Institute has held many exhibitions that have introduced the world of the Chinese scholar. I will concentrate on just a few works from exhibitions on gardens\, rocks\, books\, and seals. These were all subjects of groundbreaking exhibitions\, and we are fortunate to have been able to reassemble several works from those exhibitions. I will discuss paintings from the Ming dynasty depicting gardens and rocks; rocks from the Qing dynasty; rare books published in the late Ming dynasty; and hardstone seals and books of seal impressions from the early Qing dynasty. All of them open up aspects of life in traditional China. \n\nKeynote Three: “What Makes a Great Chinese Painting?”\nSpeaker: Dr. Alfreda Murck 姜斐德\nChina Institute Gallery at 60 has fifteen excellent paintings on display. They range in date from the Southern Song (12th–13th century) to a few months ago. They range in size from small fans to a hanging scroll two and a half meters tall. Selected to represent ten exceptional exhibitions\, many of these paintings exhibit the factors that make for a great work of art. I will talk about five factors that make a painting compelling. Most of my examples come from paintings in the exhibition; a few are from other sources. Full disclosure – these are subjective judgments but based on years of studying and admiring Chinese paintings.

This is the rousing inside story of their movement—and the way it spawned an anti-worker backlash now reshaping the industry. \nAfter Donald Trump’s election in 2016\, the tech industry sprang into action to oppose his right-wing agenda\, with workers and CEOs alike joining mass mobilizations against the new president’s anti-immigrant policies. But it wasn’t long before the tech bosses started to fall in line with the new administration. \nIn response\, tens of thousands of tech workers protested against their own employers for betraying the progressive values that once defined the industry—including organizing against military contracts\, walking out to protest sexism\, and even launching a wave of union drives. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed for those who are interested in Nihon Buyo (Traditional Japanese Kabuki Dance) and are considering joining our 8-week Nihon Buyo Workshop. \nThis 90-minute workshop is an introductory class where you will have the opportunity to experience and explore some of the movements of Japanese traditional dance (Nihon Buyo). \nUnlike modern dance\, which often features outward\, energetic\, and fast-paced movements\, Nihon Buyo is characterized by inward\, subtle\, and quiet movements. The mind must move along with the body\, requiring concentration\, awareness\, and an understanding of the movements. \nThis workshop is recommended for anyone interested in exploring this style of movement\, as well as those who are considering joining the 8-week beginner workshop series starting in October. \nDuring the workshop\, you will have the opportunity to experience and learn what will be taught in the full course. A provocative\, erotic neo-noir starring Christopher Walken in one of his most over-the-top performances\, Wild Side indulges in a rapacious world of power\, sex\, crime and money. Walken’s paranoid Bruno\, a notorious money launderer\, is the subject of an undercover sting operation that pulls in Anne Heche’s banker-turned-high-class prostitute\, who in turn becomes enraptured with Bruno’s elegant wife (Joan Chen). SUMMARY:Between China and the West: Gu Hongming’s Cultural Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:Few figures in modern Chinese intellectual history have generated as much fascination and controversy as Gu Hongming (1857–1928). His extraordinary life\, lived across cultures and civilizations\, continues to raise profound questions about cultural identity\, intellectual tradition\, and the relationship between China and the West. As discussions of global order and intercultural dialogue take on renewed urgency\, revisiting Gu Hongming’s life and thought offers a timely opportunity to reflect on the historical encounters between China and the wider world. \nThe Renwen Society of China Institute is pleased to present an online lecture by Dr. Chunmei Du\, Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Lingnan University\, Hong Kong\, on September 12\, 2026 (8:00–9:30 PM EDT). Based on her newly published Chinese book\, Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey (Qishi Yilü: Gu Hongming Huanxiang Ji\, 2026)\, the lecture offers a fresh perspective on one of the most intriguing figures in modern Chinese history. \nGu Hongming (1857–1928) remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese intellectual history. Born in British Malaya and educated in Europe\, he stunned many by remaking himself as a loyal supporter of the Qing dynasty and a devoted defender of Confucianism. He championed monarchy and Confucian morality\, even defending practices such as footbinding and the queue\, while proclaiming the superiority of the “spirit of the Chinese people” over modern Western civilization. Seen by many of his Chinese contemporaries as an ultraconservative\, he nonetheless rose to prominence in the West as a prophetic voice from the East \nToday\, as shifting geopolitics revive debates about “the West versus the Non-West\,” Gu Hongming’s reflections feel strikingly contemporary. His critique opens up space for intercultural dialogue from a perspective that is at once insider and outsider. His legacy also speaks to ongoing efforts to reimagine “authentic” Chinese culture as a powerful vehicle for projecting global soft power. \nPublished in 2026 by Social Sciences Academic Press\, the Chinese edition of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey traces Gu’s intellectual and psychological journey against the sweeping currents of global history. Following this “cultural amphibian” across geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries\, the book explores his lifelong search for belonging. It brings to life a trickster-sage who moved restlessly between worlds\, never fully at home in either. That in-between existence shadowed him with personal loss\, yet it also gave him the distinctive voice that carried his ideas into global civilizational debates. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Du will draw on her research and the writing of Gu Hongming’s Eccentric Chinese Odyssey to reexamine Gu Hongming’s intellectual world and his lifelong search for cultural belonging. Through the story of this remarkable “cultural amphibian\,” she will explore how Gu crossed geographical\, cultural\, and racial boundaries while navigating between civilizations\, and how his complex legacy continues to illuminate questions of intercultural understanding\, dialogue\, and identity in today’s world.

An Assistant Professor of Art at the University of California\, Irvine\, Wendy’s Subway published the first collection of Mira’s writing\, The Book of Na\, in 2022. \nCici Wu is a New York based artist who was born in Beijing and grew up in Hong Kong. Reducing filmmaking to its most humble and elemental components\, she creates drawings\, objects\, videos\, and installations which extend the imaginative and structural premises of cinematic language across a wide range of media. She has exhibited at major art events 36th Biennial de São Paulo (2025)\, Asian Art Biennale\, Taiwan (2024)\, and the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale\, South Korea (2021). Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at 47 Canal\, New York (2026\, 2021\, 2018); the Rockbund Art Museum\, Shanghai (2025)\, Scheusal\, Berlin (2024)\, Empty Gallery\, Hong Kong (2023\, 2019)\, Hordaland Kunstsenter\, Norway (2023); and has participated in group exhibitions at MoMA PS1 (2026)\, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (2026)\, Palais de Tokyo\, Paris (2025)\, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (2024)\, the Drawing Center\, New York (2023\, 2020)\, CAPC Musée d’art Contemporain de Bordeaux (2022)\, Para Site\, Hong Kong (2020\, 2018)\, among others. She has organized exhibitions and screenings at 99 Canal\, New York (2025)\, Giorno Poetry Systems\, New York (2024)\, M+\, Hong Kong (2023)\, among others. She will have her third solo exhibition on view at 47 Canal\, New York from September to November. \nVictoria Sung is the Phyllis C. Wattis Senior Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA)\, where she oversees the museum’s long-standing MATRIX series of contemporary art and works with artists to create exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs. Recent projects include solo shows with Amol K Patil\, Lee ShinJa\, Sin Wai Kin\, Duane Linklater\, Kenneth Tam\, and Yee I-Lann.
