SUMMARY:Transpacific Chinatowns in Rural Wyoming: The Archaeology of Chinese Labor\, Racial Violence\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:The Evanston and Rock Springs Chinatowns were constructed by the Union Pacific Railroad Company after 1869 as they needed labor for the railroad and coal mines. At the same time\, Chinese laborers were scapegoated for white unemployment\, which culminated in the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Newspapers emphasized that Chinese laborers\, mostly men\, were “heathens” who sent remittances to family in China. Within this context of anti-Chinese sentiment\, a fight broke out between white and Chinese coal miners on September 2\, 1885 and white miners led a mob that burned the Rock Springs Chinatown and murdered at least 28 Chinese residents. The Almy community of Chinese coal miners were robbed and driven out with the massacre survivors to the Evanston Chinatown. This talk discusses preliminary results from archaeological collaboration with Dr. Dudley Gardner and Chinese American descendants on the Wyoming Chinatowns\, which provide tangible insight into silenced histories of Chinese immigrant labor\, transpacific migration\, and racial exclusion.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Taiwanese? by Eric Sze
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \n\n75 recipes tell the story of Taiwanese cuisine\, with essays\, itineraries\, and stunning photography that explore Taiwan’s vibrant food culture. \n\n\nAn exhilarating exploration of Taiwanese food in all its complexity and deliciousness\, with over 70 recipes.     \nEric Sze\, a chef and restaurateur in New York City\, explores what makes Taiwanese food so multi-faceted and idiosyncratic with co-author Elyse Inamine. He travels back to Taiwan to unpack the dishes he grew up eating in Taipei\, like Lu Rou Fan and Oyster Omelet\, as well as gives an inside look at the method and madness behind the recipes he’s made in restaurants\, at pop-ups\, and at home in New York City\, like Beef Noodle Soup Ragù and Mochi Gnocchi with Chili Oil Pumpkin Puree. \n\nA new take on Taiwanese cuisine: Eric combines his deep knowledge of Taiwanese cuisine with his experimental approach to cooking\, creating dishes that he calls “authentically inauthentic.”\nPersonal storytelling: Follow Eric’s journey from a food-obsessed kid in Taipei to his evolution into a chef and restaurateur in New York City. \nArmchair travel: Discover the best bowls of Lu Rou Fan in Taipei and beyond\, as well as essays and itineraries that transport you to the island’s incredible food scene.\nStunning visuals: Photography by Alex Lau captures the kinetic energy of Taiwan’s beer houses and bustling markets and Eric’s pop-ups and restaurants in New York.\n\nTaiwanese? is a rowdy celebration of the richness and depth of Taiwanese food\, in all its contradictions and complexities. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nEric Sze is the chef and co-owner of Wen-wen and 886 in New York City. Born and raised in Taipei\, Eric taught himself how to cook—and in turn learned about where he comes from\, where it’s going\, and how all that forms him. In 2021\, he was recognized as an Eater New Guard and later received two stars for Wenwen from the New York Times. Now Eric is publishing his first cookbook (this one!)\, and you can follow him through @esze.e on TikTok\, Instagram\, and YouTube as he continues to explore and examine Taiwanese food.\nHeadshot by Alex Lau. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nElyse Inamine is a writer and editor in New York City. Previously\, she was the restaurant editor Bon Appétit\, where she first collaborated with Eric on a hot pot primer that was nominated for a James Beard media award. These days\, Elyse writes for the New York Times\, TASTE\, Food & Wine\, and Bon Appétit\, and is working on a couple more cookbooks (you can follow her on Instagram at @elyseinamine). Once she found out about this cookbook\, she immediately texted Eric to ask if he had a co-author—and the rest is history.\nHeadshot by Heami Lee.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Film and the Power of Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening & Conversation: The Bengali\nPart of the #UnderOurSun Impact Campaign \nRSVP Link: https://forms.gle/LKw1uFY6jUvQcP9H6 \nJoin for an evening of film\, conversation\, and community at Turkevi Center (Turkish House) to explore the stories you inherit\, the identities you carry\, and the unexpected connections that shape the world. \nIn The Bengali\, named one of Nonfics’ Top 20 Documentaries\, director Kavery Kaul takes an American woman to India to uncover her grandfather Shaik Mohamed Musa’s past. He was one of the early group of men who arrived in the late nineteenth century and married African American women. Her unlikely quest triggers a boldly different encounter between East and West. A personal search becomes a deeper journey into culture\, memory\, and identity\, breaking barriers and building bridges\, revealing how histories travel\, and families form across unexpected places. \nThe Bengali has inspired the @Under.Our.Sun impact campaign\, a digital storytelling movement that invites everyone to share their own cultural heritage and lived experience. Through in-person screenings\, lively panel discussions\, and digital storytelling\, the campaign sparks timely conversation about migration and belonging. \nThe Alliance of Women Film Journalists calls The Bengali “a lyrical and poetic documentary that shows how stories and presumptions can change\, forging connections that are rich and real — not just to the past\, but to the world at large.” \nProgram\n5:30 PM — Reception\n6:00 PM — Film Screening\n7:15 PM — Conversation & Audience Q&A \nFeaturing\nKavery Kaul\, Director\, The Bengali\nGordon Tapper\, President\, Give Them a Hand Foundation\, Former Section Chief\, United Nations\nModerated by Bedatri D. SUMMARY:The 2046: A World of Wong Kar Wai
DESCRIPTION:The Red Pavilion presents The 2046: A World of Wong Kar Wai\, a chamber ensemble experience inspired by the films of Wong Kar Wai. Led by Victor Lin\, the music draws from In the Mood for Love\, 2046\, Days Of Being Wild\, and related works\, shaped by the understated\, recurring motifs that define his cinematic language. \nBuilt on restrained\, cyclical phrasing\, the ensemble moves through slow waltzes and suspended harmonies\, where small shifts in texture carry emotional weight. The sound is intimate and deliberate\, connecting what remains physically separate but emotionally intertwined.  As the music unfolds\, it becomes a point of convergence – where memory\, distance\, and longing gather just beneath the surface\, giving voice to what cannot be expressed openly. \nBring your would-be lover\, your lover’s lover\, or come as your wistful self.\nJust remember: Love is all a matter of timing.\n \n\nWalk-ins welcome pending availability. 2 Drink Minimum per person for table service. 21+ ID Required. SUMMARY:Works & Process Presents Minnesota Opera: The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
DESCRIPTION:Works & Process presents The Many Deaths of Laila Starr\, a performance from the Minnesota Opera by Kamala Sankaram and Minita Gandhi on Monday\, October 12\, 2026 at 7PM at the Peter B. Lewis Theater\, 1071 Fifth Avenue\, New York\, NY\, 10128. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/guggenheim/3515/event/1476994. \nWitness the transformation of BOOM! Studios’ acclaimed graphic novel The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V. and Filipe Andrade into a vivid and transporting tale for the operatic stage by composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Minita Gandhi. Commissioned and developed by Minnesota Opera’s groundbreaking New Works Initiative\, the opera explores the blurred boundary between divine and human through the lens of magical realism when the goddess of Death is cast down to Earth to live as a mortal named Laila Starr. \nAhead of the world premiere in Saint Paul join Ram V.\, Sankaram\, Gandhi\, and members of the opera’s creative team––including director Mary Birnbaum\, scenic designer Mimi Lien\, costume designer Oana Botez\, and choreographer Rohit Gijare––for a conversation about their collaborative process\, interwoven with cast members performing excerpts. Infused with elements of Konnakol\, Raga\, and EDM\, this fantasy on purpose and impermanence unfolds with both kinetic energy and striking clarity\, as a god made mortal begins to see the world––and life itself––through fresh eyes. All are invited to continue the conversation at a reception in the rotunda. \nMinnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative is a groundbreaking commissioning program aimed at invigorating the operatic canon with an infusion of contemporary works. Launched in 2008\, it has resulted in the premiere of nine new operas including Silent Night\, The Shining\, Doubt\, Edward Tulane\, The Song Poet\, and more. The initiative is centered around a six-person creative cohort of three composers and three librettists who work in different pairings to collectively create three full-scale operas\, three chamber operas\, and three song cycles. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is the second opera from the current cohort—composers Kamala Sankaram\, David Hanlon\, and B.E. Boykin and librettists Minita Gandhi\, John de los Santos\, and Harrison David Rivers—to premiere\, following Boykin and Rivers’ My Name is Florence in January 2026.

SUMMARY:The Orchestra Now Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:As the finale of the ninth season of the China Now Music Festival\, The Orchestra Now tells the story of the Chinese laborers who carved the Transcontinental Railroad out of the Sierra Nevada in the 1860s. Men of Iron and the Golden Spike is a large-scale symphonic oratorio by composer Zhou Long. It is a story of grit and sacrifice that history books have largely left out. This monumental work returns to the stage in New York City after its premiere during the 2019 China Now Music Festival and features a large orchestra\, 120 choristers\, and vocal soloists. \nPaired with it is the US premiere of Chasing the Sky\, a five-movement symphonic suite by Li Shaosheng that turns its gaze upward\, tracing humanity’s dream of reaching the stars\, which explores our enduring fascination with the skies and the journey of space exploration. The piece traces the relationship between ancient imagination\, scientific discovery\, and contemporary innovation. \nPerformers:\nJindong Cai\, conductor\nLucy Fitz Gibbon\, soprano\nZiqi Wang\, mezzo-soprano\nYi Li\, tenor\nYue Wu\, baritone\nAndrew Munn\, bass ‍ \nThe Orchestra Now\nChina Now Chorus \nPhotography by Patrick Li
