SUMMARY:Works & Process Presents Minnesota Opera: The Many Deaths of Laila Starr
DESCRIPTION:Works & Process presents The Many Deaths of Laila Starr\, a performance from the Minnesota Opera by Kamala Sankaram and Minita Gandhi on Monday\, October 12\, 2026 at 7PM at the Peter B. Lewis Theater\, 1071 Fifth Avenue\, New York\, NY\, 10128. Tickets start at $15 and can be purchased at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/guggenheim/3515/event/1476994. \nWitness the transformation of BOOM! Studios’ acclaimed graphic novel The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V. and Filipe Andrade into a vivid and transporting tale for the operatic stage by composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Minita Gandhi. Commissioned and developed by Minnesota Opera’s groundbreaking New Works Initiative\, the opera explores the blurred boundary between divine and human through the lens of magical realism when the goddess of Death is cast down to Earth to live as a mortal named Laila Starr. \nAhead of the world premiere in Saint Paul join Ram V.\, Sankaram\, Gandhi\, and members of the opera’s creative team––including director Mary Birnbaum\, scenic designer Mimi Lien\, costume designer Oana Botez\, and choreographer Rohit Gijare––for a conversation about their collaborative process\, interwoven with cast members performing excerpts. Infused with elements of Konnakol\, Raga\, and EDM\, this fantasy on purpose and impermanence unfolds with both kinetic energy and striking clarity\, as a god made mortal begins to see the world––and life itself––through fresh eyes. All are invited to continue the conversation at a reception in the rotunda. \nMinnesota Opera’s New Works Initiative is a groundbreaking commissioning program aimed at invigorating the operatic canon with an infusion of contemporary works. Launched in 2008\, it has resulted in the premiere of nine new operas including Silent Night\, The Shining\, Doubt\, Edward Tulane\, The Song Poet\, and more. The initiative is centered around a six-person creative cohort of three composers and three librettists who work in different pairings to collectively create three full-scale operas\, three chamber operas\, and three song cycles. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is the second opera from the current cohort—composers Kamala Sankaram\, David Hanlon\, and B.E. Boykin and librettists Minita Gandhi\, John de los Santos\, and Harrison David Rivers—to premiere\, following Boykin and Rivers’ My Name is Florence in January 2026.

SUMMARY:The Orchestra Now Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:As the finale of the ninth season of the China Now Music Festival\, The Orchestra Now tells the story of the Chinese laborers who carved the Transcontinental Railroad out of the Sierra Nevada in the 1860s. Men of Iron and the Golden Spike is a large-scale symphonic oratorio by composer Zhou Long. It is a story of grit and sacrifice that history books have largely left out. This monumental work returns to the stage in New York City after its premiere during the 2019 China Now Music Festival and features a large orchestra\, 120 choristers\, and vocal soloists. \nPaired with it is the US premiere of Chasing the Sky\, a five-movement symphonic suite by Li Shaosheng that turns its gaze upward\, tracing humanity’s dream of reaching the stars\, which explores our enduring fascination with the skies and the journey of space exploration. The piece traces the relationship between ancient imagination\, scientific discovery\, and contemporary innovation. \nPerformers:\nJindong Cai\, conductor\nLucy Fitz Gibbon\, soprano\nZiqi Wang\, mezzo-soprano\nYi Li\, tenor\nYue Wu\, baritone\nAndrew Munn\, bass ‍ \nThe Orchestra Now\nChina Now Chorus \nPhotography by Patrick Li

SUMMARY:America-bound: Lin Huiyin & Liang Sicheng
DESCRIPTION:Over a century ago\, Lin Huiyin (Phyllis Lin) and Liang Sicheng crossed the Pacific to study at the University of Pennsylvania. Their years in the United States broadened their intellectual horizons and profoundly shaped their later contributions to Chinese architectural history\, architectural education\, urban planning\, and the preservation of China’s built heritage. \nOn October 10\, China Institute’s Renwen Society marks this remarkable chapter in their lives with a lecture by Dr. Sidney Wong and Ms. Annie Liang-Zhou. Together\, they revisit the formative years that helped shape two of the most influential figures in modern Chinese architecture. \nThe presentation also examines Lin and Liang’s enduring intellectual connections with American architects\, scholars\, and institutions during the 1930s and 1940s\, highlighting the reciprocal exchange of ideas that enriched both countries. Drawing on original archival research from the University of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia\, Dr. Wong will present newly uncovered documents\, photographs\, and historical records that illuminate this formative period in their lives and reconstruct the remarkable network of people\, places\, and ideas that surrounded their American experience. \nBringing together original archival research with perspectives on historic preservation and family legacy\, the lecture offers fresh insight into the transnational experiences that shaped Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng’s careers\, their enduring intellectual legacy\, and the continuing relevance of their work for cross-cultural exchange and heritage preservation today. \nIn-Person Bilingual Lecture (English & Chinese)

SUMMARY:Otaku Oratorio 2 - Otaku Choir's 2026 Fall Concert
DESCRIPTION:Otaku Oratorio 2: I set out to save the world\, but it turns out the world’s greatest threat is a kid who calls me mom. What happens when an anime concert decides it wants to tell an entire story? \nOn Friday\, October 9\, the Otaku Choir returns with Otaku Oratorio 2\, an original live concert experience combining choral music from anime and video games with voice acting\, hand-drawn artwork\, manga-inspired visuals and a full-length story unfolding on screen. \nAt the center of the story is Usagi Kitadani\, a young soldier growing up in the shadow of a father remembered as one of humanity’s greatest heroes. As she and her friends prepare to enter a world shaped by military power\, old conflicts and a history everyone seems to understand differently\, Usagi begins to discover that the story she inherited may not be the whole story. \nAnd then a mission to the dark side of the Moon changes everything. \nPerformed by the NYC-based Otaku Choir alongside a cast of voice actors\, Otaku Oratorio 2 brings together the music and visual language of anime\, JRPGs\, visual novels and tokusatsu in a concert built for the people who grew up loving them. Music from series and games including Digimon\, Sailor Moon\, Elfen Lied\, Final Fantasy XIV\, NieR and more becomes part of the storytelling rather than a traditional concert setlist. \nIt’s funny\, dramatic\, strange\, heartfelt and a major step forward from the first Otaku Oratorio. \nJoin us at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music on Friday\, October 9\, during New York Comic Con weekend. \nGeneral Admission: $20\nPay-What-You-Can tickets are also available.

SUMMARY:One-Night-Only Reading of SANCTUARY CITY
DESCRIPTION:Producers Level Forward and Colt Coeur have announced a one-night-only benefit reading of Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok’s Sanctuary City starring Lola Tung (“The Summer I Turned Pretty\,” Hadestown)\, Daniel Bravo Hernández (Romeo and Juliet) and Kyle Beltran (“American Rust\,” A Case for the Existence of God). The October 9 reading\, to be directed by Caitlin Sullivan\, will benefit RAICES\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes migrant justice for immigrant\, refugee and asylum-seeking people and families. The reading will be performed at New York Theatre Workshop\, the original producer of the premiere production in 2020. \nSanctuary City takes place in a post-9/11 Newark\, NJ\, where two teenagers who were brought to the United States as children become one another’s sanctuaries. When G becomes naturalized\, she and B hatch a plan to marry so that he may legally remain in the country and pursue the future he imagines for his life. But as time hurtles on and complications mount\, the young friends find that this act challenges and fractures the closest relationship either has ever had. \nProceeds from the evening will benefit RAICES\, supporting their legal and social services work and cultivating welcoming communities that uphold collective democratic freedom. Tickets start at $79.
