SUMMARY:Chasing Dreams: US-China Music Forum
DESCRIPTION:The US-China Music Forum: Chasing Dreams commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States; it highlights two major musical works that focus on the sacrifices and contributions of Chinese Americans\, featuring a panel discussion and live operatic excerpts. Join Huang Ruo\, Su Wei and Jindong Cai in a vibrant discussion on how music captures the emotion and power of history\, what the “American Dream” means to them\, and how they envision music and performance illuminating stories that have been neglected. The discussion will be followed with a Q&A and a reception. This is part of the China Now Music Festival\, created to deepen understanding of Chinese culture through orchestral\, operatic\, and chamber music performances. The theme\, Chasing Dreams\, reminds us that the pursuit of dreams is a shared human experience that connects us all. \nThe Festival is centered on two major musical works that focus on the sacrifices and contributions of Chinese Americans. The opening concert\, on October 2 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall\, features “The Rift”\, a chamber opera by Chinese American composer Huang Ruo and playwright David Henry Hwang. The work tells the compelling story behind Maya Lin’s iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial and explores themes of identity and reconciliation. The festival concludes on October 11 at the Rose Theater\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, with Zhou Long‘s “Men of Iron and the Golden Spike”. This large scale symphonic oratorio honors the thousands of Chinese laborers who built the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. The performance will feature an 80-piece orchestra\, a 120-voice chorus\, and six vocal soloists.

SUMMARY:Anh Vo: Tỳ Bà Hành…But Alas There Was No Music
DESCRIPTION:FourOneOne presents “Anh Vo: Tỳ Bà Hành…But Alas There Was No Music”\, a rare opportunity to experience this quintessential piece from the endangered northern Vietnamese chamber music form ca trù\, which has not been performed publicly in its entirety since 1945. \nTỳ Bà Hành is the latest installment in performance artist Anh Vo’s ongoing dialogue with ca trù\, which traces its origins to royal courts and rituals of the 9th century. Banned in the 20th century by the Communist government because of its perceived associations with elitist antiquity\, prostitution and opium culture\, very few knowledgeable ca trù practitioners now exist. Despite its inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009\, teachers and apprentices still must navigate generational gaps in oral transmission and adapt new ways of reconstructing this extraordinary and fragile tradition. Yet ca trù persists\, austere and trance-like\, built on intricate poetic meters and the striking interplay of female voice\, lute and drum. \nVo began to study ca trù in 2024. Together with their teachers\, one of whom sings and beats the poetry’s intricate metric structures on a section of bamboo (phách)\, and the other on the đàn đáy (3-string long necked lute)\, Vo will give an unabridged performance of Tỳ Bà Hành (琵琶行 Pipa Song) by the Chinese poet Bai Juyi. A Tang dynasty poem that probes the parallel feelings of exile and loss of status experienced by a demoted government official and an aging female musician\, the entire poem takes roughly 50 minutes to perform. But even amongst the most educated scholars and practitioners of ca trù\, few have the knowledge to attempt the piece in its entirety. \nVo’s part in the performance will be the “spectator” (in the ca trù tradition\, often a scholar or connoisseur of the art) who strikes a trống chầu (praise drum) in praise (or disapproval) of the singer’s performance. Vo’s connection to the work is personal; their great-grandmother was a ca trù singer on Khâm Thiên street in Hanoi\, once notorious for its singing houses\, opium dens\, and intimate entanglements between art and sex work. Vo’s great-grandmother was eventually bought out of the singing house by their great-grandfather to be his second wife—a fact that echoes the life of the courtesan musician in Bai Juyi’s poem\, who is married to a merchant in her later years. \nEven though Vo had never heard the music in person\, when they did finally encounter ca trù\, it was not as a neutral “heritage form.” They understood that the music’s virtuosity and refinement were historically inseparable from the lives of the women whose artistry unfolded within colonial economies of pleasure and precarity. \nBased in Brooklyn and Hanoi\, Anh Vo is a Vietnamese choreographer and writer working in the expanded field of performance. Their practice mobilizes the naked body in its variations to make explicit the entanglement of power and ghostly forces that cut across flesh. Their work emerges from the unlikely lineage convergences between Downtown New York experimental performance\, Hanoi performance art\, and Vietnamese folk ritual practices. Vo is indebted to Miguel Gutierrez’s unapologetic queerness and amorphous excess\, Moriah Evan’s speculative commitment to the depth of interiority\, Julie Tolentino’s durational poetics of intimacy\, Tehching Hsieh’s existential sense of time\, and Ngoc Dai’s guttural sonic landscape of postwar Vietnam.

SUMMARY:2026 Korea on Screen: House of the Seasons (장손)
DESCRIPTION:The Korean Cultural Center New York proudly presents Peafowl as part of its Korea on Screen series—a year-long screening series celebrating the depth and diversity of Korean cinema. Through feature films\, documentaries\, short films\, and independent productions\, the series aims to broaden access to and appreciation of Korean cinema in New York City. \nOh Jung-min’s House of the Seasons begins on a sweltering summer day as three generations of a family gather at their hometown in Daegu for an ancestral memorial rite. Seong-jin’s father has inherited and now runs the family tofu factory\, with other family members helping with the business. What at first appears to be a harmonious family gathering gradually begins to unravel after the memorial rite\, as differing perspectives and long-standing tensions come to the surface. In the midst of the growing conflict\, Seong-jin makes a startling declaration: he has no intention of taking over the family business. Following the lives of this three-generation family with a calm and restrained gaze\, Oh Jung-min reflects on what disappears and what is passed on to the next generation. \nHouse of the Seasons premiered at the 28th Busan International Film Festival\, where it won three awards: the KBS Independent Film Award\, the Aurora Media Award\, and the CGK Award. The film was recognized for its nuanced portrayal of multigenerational family life\, Korean tradition\, and generational conflict. \nTicket: FREE (RSVP REQUIRED)\n * RSVP and seating are first come\, first served.\n* Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.\n* Your tickets will be released to the standby line 10 minutes before the show\, so we recommend you arrive early to secure your seats.

SUMMARY:Book Talk | Mud on the Moon by Nita Noveno
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE BOOK \nMUD ON THE MOON is a hybrid memoir that weaves a daughter’s journey of discovering her Filipino immigrant father’s hidden past with imaginative storytelling\, offering a look into migration\, identity\, and the intergenerational legacies that shape who we are.  \n\n\n\nBorn in Southeast Alaska\, Nita Noveno traces the legacy of her father\, who arrived in the US in 1928 as part of a wave of Filipino men seeking better opportunities through manual labor in agriculture and other industries. The book alternates between Nita’s coming-of-age story and imagined chapters of her father’s life\, revealing the gaps and silences that lie between their experiences. With a blend of personal and historical imagery\, Mud on the Moon offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Filipino immigrants in America. It is a meditation on how family\, memory\, and identity are shaped by the stories we inherit\, both spoken and unspoken\, across generations. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNita Noveno is the recipient of the 2024 Women’s Prose Prize from Red Hen Press for her hybrid memoir Mud on the Moon\, published in August 2026. Publishers Weekly calls it “a moving blend of autobiography and imagination” and “an auspicious first outing.” A graduate of the MFA Creative Writing Program at The New School\, her creative nonfiction and hybrid work has appeared in MĀNOA\, Hippocampus\, The Margins\, and elsewhere. She teaches creative nonfiction\, composition\, and literature at the Borough of Manhattan Community College\, City University of New York\, and is the founder\, curator\, and host emeritus of Sunday Salon\, a long-running reading series in New York City. The child of immigrant parents from the Philippines\, she grew up in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska and now lives in Queens\, NY. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nNina Sharma’s work has appeared in outlets such as The Los Angeles Times\, The New Yorker\, Harper’s Bazaar and Electric Literature. Her debut personal essay collection is The Way You Make Me Feel: Love in Black and Brown(Penguin Press 2024). The Washington Post praises\, “Sharma’s debut is remarkable for its daring\, how unafraid it is to eschew rosy visions of racial solidarity.” Nina received her MFA in writing from Columbia University’s School of the Arts and has been awarded residencies from Vermont Studio Center and  St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency. Nina is formerly the Programs Director at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and with Quincy Scott Jones she co-created Blackshop\, a column that thinks about allyship between BIPOC people\, featured on Anomaly. A two-time Asian Women Giving Circle grantee for her workshop\, “No Name Mind: Stories of Mental Health from Asian America\,” she currently teaches at Barnard College and the Manhattanville University MFA in writing program. She is a proud co-founder of the comedy troupe Not Your Biwi Improv.

SUMMARY:Rea Tajiri's "History and Memory: For Akiko and Takashige"
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Rea Tajiri blends interviews\, memorabilia\, and a pilgrimage to the camp where her mother was interned\, ruminating on the difficult nature of representing the past – especially a past that exists outside traditional historic accounts. More than simply calling attention to the gaps in the story of the Japanese American internment\, this important film from 1991 raises questions about collective history; questions that prompt Tajiri to daringly re-imagine and re-create what has been stolen and what has been lost. This 30-minute documentary short will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and choreographer Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nComplimentary drinks and popcorn will be served! \nHosted by the Wythe Hotel Art Program. Curated by Benjamin Akio Kimitch. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM.\nScreening begins at 7:00 PM\, followed by Q&A. \nWythe Hotel Screening Room\n80 Wythe Ave\, Brooklyn\, NY\, 11249 \n(Please use the downstairs speakeasy entrance on Wythe Avenue) \nCapacity is limited. From the fevered anti-communism of the McCarthy era to the boardrooms of New York\, the corridors of Washington\, and the glittering excess of Studio 54\, Cohn emerges as a charismatic\, manipulative\, and sinister presence. Bird and Goldmark’s meticulous research and gripping storytelling trace the making and unmaking of a man whose divisive influence deeply impacted the workings of the US for years to come.

SUMMARY:Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal
DESCRIPTION:A book talk with author Sandip Roy \n\n\nJoin NYU’s Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality for a book talk with author Sandip Roy on Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal: The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator \nAs the last great female impersonator of Bengali theater\, Chapal Bhaduri—known as Chapal Rani—once held audiences spellbound in the jatra tradition\, where men became goddesses and heroines. But when women finally took their place on stage\, Chapal found himself exiled from the world he had ruled. In this groundbreaking biography\, Sandip Roy captures the rise and fall of a performer whose art was inseparable from his identity. \nTold in Chapal’s own voice and interwoven with evocative fictional vignettes\, Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal brings to life Kolkata’s golden age of theater and the resilience of a man who refused to disappear. Through decades of research and deeply personal interviews\, Roy crafts a moving portrait of gender and belonging. \nSandip Roy is a writer\, columnist and podcaster currently living in Kolkata. He is a columnist for Mint Lounge\, the Hindu and the host of the Sandip Roy Show on Indian Express. His weekly audio dispatches from Kolkata have been airing on public radio KALW in San Francisco since 2012. His work has appeared in publications like the New York Times\, BBC\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, NPR\, the Times of India\, Firstpost\, Huffington Post\, Conde Nast Traveller and other publications. He has been part of anthologies like Out! Stories from the New Queer India\, The Phobic and the Erotic\, Q&A: Queer in Asian America\, Men on Men 6\, Because I Have a Voice\, Story-wallah!\, House Spirit: Drinking in India and Cat People. For more than a decade\, Roy was editor of Trikone\, the world’s oldest magazine on LGBTQ+ South Asian issues. His first novel is Don’t Let Him Know. His latest book is Chapal Rani\, the Last Queen of Bengal – The Life and Times of a Female Impersonator. \nCopies of the book will be sold at the event. The talk will be followed by a catered reception and refreshments. \nNYU campus access guidelines: Registration is required. Non-NYU guests may be asked to present a government-issued photo ID. NYU guests must present their NYU ID. \nAccessibility note: This venue has an elevator and is accessible for wheelchair users. There are single-stall\, all gender restrooms available. SUMMARY:Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken
DESCRIPTION:The Tenth Edition of JLF New York continues at the National Arts Club with two blockbuster events. \n\nJLF New York @ NAC \nWith hundreds of thousands of spectators worldwide\, and mini-festivals from Houston to Doha\, India’s iconic Jaipur Literature Festival is known as “the greatest literary show on Earth” (Tina Brown). \nIn conjunction with the Asia Society and the Center for Fiction\, NAC will host the tenth edition of JLF New York\, an international edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival —which celebrates conversation\, bold ideas and exceptional storytelling\, in the voices of speakers ranging from novelist Alka Joshi and curator Sonya Rhie Mace to Oppenheimer biographer Kai Bird. \nSession 1 at 11 a.m. \nPahari Paintings: Art and Stories – Sonya Rhie Mace in conversation with Molly Emma Aitken \nBetween the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries\, the Pahari kingdoms of the northwestern Himalayas created a luminous world of painting—intimate\, expressive and richly coloured. In this richly illustrated session\, celebrated curator Sonya Rhie Mace explores a remarkably dispersed collection that offers new ways of seeing these works. Moving beyond questions of attribution\, the conversation with art historian and professor Molly Emma Aitken\, traces artists\, patrons and practices across regions\, revealing a shared visual culture shaped by movement and exchange. \n\nThis event occurs in person. RSVP does not guarantee entry. Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.
