SUMMARY:Book Launch | To the Tune by Jee Leong Koh
DESCRIPTION:In To the Tune\, Jee Leong Koh asks Du Fu how poetry can take to the barricades\, discovering bracing answers from ordinary citizens\, media workers\, political organizers\, and protest songwriters. \nKoh’s new book juxtaposes a series of searching epistolary poems and a collection of poem-songs that forcibly and tentatively lurch into existence\, take on misguided titles\, and beg for music to set them chanting and marching. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJee Leong Koh is the author of STEEP TEA (Carcanet)\, named a Best Book of the Year by UK’s Financial Times and a Finalist by Lambda Literary in the USA. His hybrid work of fiction\, SNOW AT 5 PM: TRANSLATIONS OF AN INSIGNIFICANT JAPANESE POET\, won the Singapore Literature Prize in English fiction. Originally from Singapore\, Koh lives in New York City\, where he heads the literary non-profit Singapore Unbound. He is also the Poetry Editor of the Evergreen Review. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nJerrold Yam is a corporate lawyer and the author of three collections\, most recently Intruder (Ethos Books). His poems have appeared in Prairie Schooner\, Third Coast\, Hayden’s Ferry Review and Washington Square Review. In 2024\, he won the Cheltenham Poetry Prize and was a 2024 Writer-in-Residence at the UK’s National Centre for Writing. \nBrad Vogel is author of the poetry collections FIND ME IN THE FERAL POCKETS and BROAD MEADOW BIRD. His poetry has been set to music by multiple composers. Brad founded & coordinates NYC Poets Afloat\, an annual residency & reading series aboard ships in New York Harbor\, as well as the annual Gowanus Dawn Reading\, part of the Brooklyn Book Festival (10th annual performance on September 25th!). He leads programs at Brooklyn Museum\, NYU\, & Center for Fiction. Brad also serves on the Walt Whitman Initiative board and as the Director of Special Projects at Judgy Baby\, a new creative hub in Gowanus.

SUMMARY:Screening and Panel Discussion of Daughter of Shanghai

In 2006\, the Library of Congress selected Daughter of Shanghai for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry. \nThe screening of the 62-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion covering the making of the movie\, immigration and human trafficking\, and the stories of early Hollywood film icon Wong and of Ahn\, who was the son of famed Korean independence activist Ahn Chang-Ho. \nJudge Denny Chin and Professor Thomas Lee will be joined for the panel discussion by Jeff Yang\, author of The Golden Screen: The Movies That Made Asian America\, and Katie Gee Salisbury\, author of Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong. \nSpeakers \n\nJeff Yang:  Author of I Am Jackie Chan\, Once Upon a Time in China\, Eastern Standard Time\, RISE\, and THE GOLDEN SCREEN\nKatie Gee Salisbury: Author of Not Your China Doll\, a new biography of Anna May Wong\, Hollywood’s first Asian American movie star\n\nRemarks by \n\nHon. SUMMARY:Written Women: Lalleshwari
DESCRIPTION:Written Women is a monthly writers salon at Cordelia\, inviting you to respond to poems\, stories and myths written by and about women. \n\n\nEach month\, we’ll read and discuss a different text to inspire our own free-write session\, drawing from women’s stories of power\, madness\, sensuality\, tragedy\, queerness\, and insubordination. Time will be set aside at the end of each meetup for folks to share excerpts of what they’ve written. \nThis September\, we’ll read the work of Lalleshwari\, also known as Lal Ded\, a Kashmiri mystic from the early 14th century whose deceptivley simple verses deliver profound meditations on philosophy and spirituality\, all through the lens of the everyday. We’ll wander through her body of work\, crossing oceans\, riding horses\, and opening doors. Inspired by her contemplations on devotion\, destruction\, and bliss\, we’ll write our own pieces which reach to uncover the sacred in the mundane. \nWritten Women is led by poet\, movement artist and facilitator Katya Borkov. You can learn more about her work at http://www.everythingspills.studio\, or on instagram @everything.spills \nThis event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \nPainting featured in the banner by Kanayalal S Raina.\n\nPhotograph courtesy of Rebecca Foltin

SUMMARY:Book Launch: BAD THINGS HAPPENED HERE by Moniza Hossain
DESCRIPTION:This supernatural horror follows twelve-year-old Sam to his unsettling family home in Singapore. Perfect for fans of R.L. Stine! \n\n\n\n\nWe’re honored to welcome Moniza Hossain to The Twisted Spine on September 9 to celebrate the release of Bad Things Happened Here! Moniza will be joined in conversation by Clay McLeod Chapman (DEVIL INSIDE). \nAbout BAD THINGS HAPPENED HERE: \nLonely twelve-year-old Sam Wells has never known his mother. So when his maternal grandmother calls with a plane ticket to Singapore\, he hopes the trip will give him the answers he’s been looking for. But his imposing family home isn’t what he expected. His grandmother is a stranger. Spiders crawl over impassible mounds of hoarded mementos. The house is such a labyrinth that Sam can barely make his way through the boxes\, let alone find out anything about his mom. \nUntil he meets her ghost\, frozen in time at age twelve. \nSomething terrible happened when Priya Malhotra was just a schoolgirl in Singapore. Something twisted enough to keep her trapped. Something that might be happening again. Children are going missing as they did decades before in Sam’s eerily unsettling neighborhood . . . and the closer Sam gets to the terrifying truth that lurks within the haunted\, abandoned factory where the original crimes occurred\, the more it seems that Sam will be the next to disappear. \nTo save himself\, he’ll have to untangle the mystery. But if he does\, will he lose his mom forever? \nAbout the speakers: \nMoniza Hossain is a Singaporean author of Bengali descent who writes children’s books inspired by her South Asian heritage. SUMMARY:Offsite: Priya Parker: The Art of Fighting w/ America Ferrera

Additional copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.\nHome address is collected for contact tracing purposes; it will not be used otherwise.\nThe event will also be livestreamed for free on YouTube: https://youtube.com/live/0VU_pqs8EUE\nAs a reminder: If you are not feeling well\, please do not come to the event\, even if you have a ticket; email us and we’ll work it out.\n\nIf you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations\, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. \n \nA paradigm-shattering exploration of how we fight and how we build healthy conflict\, from the author of The Art of Gathering. \nWe say we want community. Successful teams. High-performing colleagues and workplaces. Dynamic friend groups. Yet many of us don’t understand the crucial element we need to forge long-lasting communities in our lives: healthy conflict. \nIn The Art of Fighting\, Priya Parker explains that we can’t form and grow effective relationships without a fight. She rejects the idea that conflict is abnormal or that good groups don’t fight. All groups change and evolve; indeed\, it’s because people disagree that good groups flourish. \nAs she did in the now-classic The Art of Gathering\, Parker draws on her far-reaching experience as a conflict facilitator\, her own detailed research\, and real-world examples to lay out the ways that people can identify disputes\, determine how to address them\, and what to do if they are insurmountable. Whether people disagree in the boardroom or the locker room\, on a playground or in church\, online or in person\, conflict is a part of life\, and understanding healthy conflict and how to harness its power is more important than ever. The Art of Fighting is a vital primer to help all of us understand how to do that. \n \nPriya Parker is a conflict facilitator\, strategic adviser\, and the author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters. Trained in the field of conflict resolution\, Parker has worked on race relations on American college campuses and on peace processes in the Arab world\, southern Africa\, and India. A graduate of MIT\, the Harvard Kennedy School\, and the University of Virginia\, she lives with her family in Brooklyn\, New York. \n \nAmerica Ferrera is an Oscar ® -nominated and Emmy ® -\, Golden Globe ® – and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning actress\, director\, producer and activist. Ferrera starred as ‘Gloria’ in the record-breaking BARBIE\, for which she garnered an Academy Award nomination. A longtime activist\, Ferrera co-founded Harness\, a community of artists\, influencers and grassroots leaders leveraging art and storytelling to power change\, and co-leads Poderistas\, a digital lifestyle community and non-profit organization\, built to inspire\, inform and affirm the Latina community. Ferrera serves as a Global Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM)\, through which she champions safe migration\, women’s rights\, and civic engagement.

SUMMARY:Alison Nguyen: "Prior Occupants" Artist Talk & Special Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the world premiere of Alison Nguyen’s High Line & CHANEL co-commission\, followed by a conversation with the artist. \n\n\nIn her compelling new film for High Line Originals\, co-commissioned with CHANEL Culture Fund\, Nguyen explores the obscure nuclear history of Westbeth Artist Housing’s building—the former headquarters for Bell Laboratories\, a research facility tied to the development of communication technologies and\, later\, the atomic bomb. Inspired by a severed fragment of the original High Line freight rail left embedded in Westbeth’s facade\, and the High Line’s own history of transformation\, Nguyen reflects on the historical narratives that persist—and those quietly erased—within sites of adaptive reuse. \nYou’re invited to the premiere of Nguyen’s new work Prior Occupants\, co-commissioned by High Line Art and CHANEL Culture Fund. Following the screening\, the artist will be joined in conversation by High Line Art Associate Curator\, Taylor Zakarin\, to discuss her practice and this exciting new work. \nPart of High Line Channel\, High Line Originals is High Line Art’s commissioning program for artists working in time-based media. This initiative invites emerging or underrecognized US-based artists\, nominated by a trusted group of contemporary curators\, to submit a proposal for a new video work that considers the context of the park in a meaningful way and will resonate with our diverse audience. \nHigh Line Originals launched in 2019 with Tourmaline’s Salacia\, which is now held in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. Other past commissions include Onyeka Igwe’s The Miracle on George Green (2021)\, and Alicia Mersy’s NYC Wisdom (2024). In 2025\, High Line Art partnered with CHANEL Culture Fund\, and together co-commissioned Frank WANG Yefeng’s Groundless Flower – ཨ (2025). \nAbout the Artist: \nAlison Nguyen (b. 1986\, Wilmington\, Delaware) is a visual artist working across video\, installation\, performance\, and sculpture. Using approaches of speculative fiction\, documentary research\, and embodied performance\, Nguyen creates works that reconsider how narratives operate within the individual\, the institution\, the archive\, and within the politics of cultural memory. \nNguyen lives and works in New York\, New York. Solo screenings and exhibitions of her work have been presented at Storefront for Art and Architecture\, New York\, New York (2026); Art Basel Hong Kong Encounters\, Hong Kong (2025); Murmurs\, Los Angeles (2024); Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, New York (2023); MIT List Center for Visual Arts\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts (2023); and e-flux\, Brooklyn\, New York (2023). Nguyen has participated in group exhibitions and screenings at the Busan Biennial\, Busan\, South Korea (2026); Kunsthalle Mechelen\, Mechelen\, Belgium (2026); Vienna Secession\, Vienna\, Austria (2024); EMAP x Frieze Seoul Film\, Seoul\, South Korea (2024); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea\, Seoul\, South Korea (2023); The Everson Museum\, Syracuse\, New York (2022); The Dowse Art Museum\, Lower Hutt\, New Zealand (2021); The International Studio & Curatorial Program\, Brooklyn\, New York (2019 & 2020); KAJE\, Brooklyn\, New York (2020); and Microscope Gallery\, Brooklyn\, New York (2017). \nShe has participated in film festivals around the world\, including Oberhausen International Film Festival\, International Shorts Online (2021); CPH:DOX\, Copenhagen\, Denmark (2021); Edinburgh International Film Festival\, Edinburgh\, United Kingdom (2021); Ann Arbor Film Festival\, Ann Arbor\, Michigan (2020); Open City Documentary Festival\, London\, United Kingdom (2019); Channels Festival International Biennial of Video Art\, Melbourne\, Australia (2019)\, and True/False Film Festival\, Columbia\, Missouri (2018); among others. \nNguyen has received residencies and fellowships from Pioneer Works\, New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellowship in Film/Video\, International Studio & Curatorial Program\, The Institute of Electronic Arts\, BRIC\, and Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center. She was a 2023-2024 Studio Fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program. \nPhoto Credit:\nAlison Nguyen\, Prior Occupants\, 2026 (still). Courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | The Chinese Lady by Bo Wang
DESCRIPTION:Pre-purchase your copy of the featured title to guarantee your signed copy! This helps ensure that everyone who wants a book goes home with one\, in case we sell out at the event.\n\nABOUT THE BOOK \n\n\n\n\n\nBo Wang’s gorgeous and immersive debut historical novel immortalizes the life of the first Chinese woman to be brought to the United States in the 1800s. \nLittle Sparrow\, Julia\, Afong Moy\, Madame Moy\, The Chinese Lady\, were her many names . . . but her true name has been lost to time. \nIn 1834 Afong Moy was brought to New York by two merchants as a live exhibit. Rising to fame as the first Chinese female in the United States\, she became an oddity among curios as Americans marveled at the opportunity to observe her astonishing little feet\, broken and bound to resemble lotuses. \nAs the story moves from 1820s Canton to P.T. Barnum’s American Museum\, to Gold Rush San Francisco\, three women introduce us to her many names. Her mother calls her Little Sparrow and sells her to a captain who sails her to New York. The captain’s wife names her Julia and “graciously” treats her as her own. And when she is shunted off to P.T Barnum\, her fellow human exhibitions call her China. Eventually arriving in San Francisco’s Chinatown\, she will at long last claim her name and her own story. \nCombining archival research and brilliantly imaginative storytelling\, Bo Wang masterfully fills in history’s gaps to weave a powerful narrative of survival in the face of hardship\, tragedy\, and betrayal. Told through the eyes of those around her; mirroring her life as an object on display\, until we finally see the world through her own eyes. \n\n\n\n\n\n ABOUT THE AUTHOR \nBo Wang was born in Cincinnati to Taiwanese American parents. Her childhood was peppered with stories of the Monkey King alongside those of Frog and Toad. A graduate of Sycamore Public Schools\, Bo holds an A.B. in history and literature from Harvard College. She now lives in Boston with her family. The Chinese Lady is her debut novel. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nAlice Evelyn Yang is a Chinese American writer from Norfolk\, Virginia. Her debut novel\, A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing\, was selected by booksellers as an Indie Next and Indies Introduce pick and longlisted for the Women’s Prize. She is the recipient of the 2023 Jesmyn Ward Prize from Michigan Quarterly Review\, and her work has been published in MQR\, The Rumpus\, and the Asian American Writers Workshop’s The Margins\, among others. She earned her MFA from Columbia University. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Book Club: Eileen Chang’s Time Tunnel
DESCRIPTION:Join the China Books Review book club this September to discuss Time Tunnel: Stories and Essays by Eileen Chang\, tr. Karen S. Kingsbury (New York Review Books\, October 2025)\, a collection of previously untranslated stories from Eileen Chang’s literary career. \nThirty years after her death\, Time Tunnel reaffirms Eileen Chang’s place as one of the 20th century’s finest writers. Spanning the entirety of her career\, from 1940s Japanese-occupied Shanghai to Hong Kong under British colonial rule\, then her final decades in America\, these stories showcase Chang’s enduring ability to illuminate the inner lives of people dislocated by vast historic and cultural shifts. The intricacies of lifelong friendships\, the clipped hopes of lovers and the subtle contortions of gender politics unravel with the same virtuosic skill and nuance that catapulted her to fame with novellas such as Lust\, Caution and Love in a Fallen City. We owe a debt of thanks to Karen S. Kingsbury and Jie Zhang\, not only for translating these remarkable stories into English\, but for proving that with Eileen Chang\, there are no marginal texts\, only hidden gems. \nRegister your spot by RSVPing at the link to the top right of this page. The book club is free\, but seats are limited so secure yours now! We ask that all book club members purchase and read your own copy of the book in advance if you’re joining. \nThe China Books Review book club is a bimonthly series of spirited literary discussions with like-minded readers\, hosted by our editors and featuring introductory context before freewheeling debate. We meet five times a year (Jan\, Mar\, May\, Sep\, Nov) to discuss the latest literature and nonfiction from or on the Sinophone world. If you’d like to be added to our invite list to be notified of future book club sessions\, just email us at info@chinabooksreview.com.

SUMMARY:Film: The Paper (纸)
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Artists on the Edge brings together five landmark films that reveal the fertile exchange between contemporary art and Chinese cinema from the late 1980s through the turn of the twenty-first century. \nThe Paper (纸)\nDing Jiancheng\, China\, 1993\, 62 min.\nIn Chinese with English subtitles. \nFollowed by a Q&A with Ding Jiancheng. \nAdapted from a short story by Su Tong\, one of China’s foremost contemporary novelists whose fiction inspired Raise the Red Lantern\, Ding Jiancheng’s The Paper is one of the most visually distinctive Chinese films of its era. Centered on an elderly maker of paper effigies and the young boy drawn into his world\, the film treats paper as both subject and method\, drifting between literature and cinema\, dream and reality\, color and monochrome. The result is a film in a constant state of transformation\, rooted in craft\, materiality\, and storytelling. Long believed to survive only in a single 35mm release print\, the film was digitized by the Asian Film Archive in 2021\, making this remarkable debut feature newly accessible to audiences. —Sam C. Mac \nDigital restoration courtesy of Asian Film Archive. \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.

SUMMARY:Film: The Crack (缝)
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Artists on the Edge brings together five landmark films that reveal the fertile exchange between contemporary art and Chinese cinema from the late 1980s through the turn of the twenty-first century. \nThe Crack (缝)\nLi Wake\, China\, 2000\, 101 min.\nIn Chinese with English subtitles. \nLong circulated only through underground screenings before its restoration by the Chinese Independent Film Archive\, Li Wake’s The Crack stands as one of the most significant rediscoveries of Chinese independent cinema. Drawing on his own experiences as a performance artist and contemporary artist\, this semi-autobiographical drama moves between 1966 and 1989\, tracing the psychological afterlives of two defining eras of modern Chinese history. Rejecting conventional realism in favor of a oneiric\, expressionist visual language\, Li constructs a world where ritual\, performance\, erotic obsession\, and historical memory collapse into one another. Arriving near the culmination of the first generation of Chinese independent filmmaking\, The Crack remains one of its boldest and most singular achievements. —Sam C. SUMMARY:Film: Beijing Bastards (北京杂种)
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Artists on the Edge brings together five landmark films that reveal the fertile exchange between contemporary art and Chinese cinema from the late 1980s through the turn of the twenty-first century. \nBeijing Bastards (北京杂种)\nZhang Yuan\, China\, 1993\, 88 min.\nIn Chinese with English subtitles. \nFew films capture the texture of early-1990s Beijing as vividly as Beijing Bastards. Blending documentary immediacy with improvised fiction\, Zhang Yuan’s sophomore feature film immerses viewers in the city’s emerging rock music scene\, and features two defining figures of Chinese rock music—Cui Jian and Dou Wei. Grainy\, restless\, and alive to the rhythms of performance\, the film helped establish a new cinematic vocabulary for a generation of Chinese filmmakers.\n—Sam C. Mac \nPreceded by: \nWhite Lines (白线)\nZhang Yuan\, China\, 1988\, 6 min.\nIn Chinese with English subtitles. \nMade while he was a student at the Beijing Film Academy\, Zhang Yuan’s White Lines offers a glimpse into the creative milieu that would shape a generation of Chinese contemporary art. Starring painters Liu Xiaodong and Yu Hong—who would later appear together as a brooding couple in Wang Xiaoshuai’s The Days (1993)—the film begins as a simple studio exercise before gradually slipping into performance\, dance\, and playful improvisation. Moving from apartment interior to rooftop\, canvas to city skyline\, it already reveals a young Zhang Yuan’s fascination with the porous boundary between work and play\, realism and performance. —Sam C. Mac \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.

SUMMARY:Film: Reverie on Old Shanghai (海上旧梦)
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Artists on the Edge brings together five landmark films that reveal the fertile exchange between contemporary art and Chinese cinema from the late 1980s through the turn of the twenty-first century. \nReverie on Old Shanghai (海上旧梦)\nChen Yifei\, China\, 1993\, 78 min.\nIn Chinese with English subtitles. \nReverie on Old Shanghai is the cinematic expression of the nostalgic visual language that made Chen Yifei one of the defining artists of China’s reform era. Dispensing with conventional narrative\, the film unfolds through a succession of exquisitely composed set-pieces inspired by the imagined Shanghai of the 1930s. With Chen himself drifting silently through these visions\, the film transforms the artist’s lifelong fascination with memory\, elegance\, and cultural history into a haunting meditation on the beauty—and impermanence—of the past. Recently restored in 4K for a rare retrospective screening in Shanghai alongside a major exhibition of Chen’s work\, the film deserves rediscovery by both admirers of his paintings and lovers of ethereal cinema.\n—Sam C. Mac \nA limited amount of complimentary tickets will be available to NYC college students with ID at the box office on the day of the screening.
