SUMMARY:AAIFF Film: Before the Moon Falls (with discount)
DESCRIPTION:This film will be screened in-person only. A Q&A will follow the screening.  The Asian American International Film Festival is the nation’s first and longest running festival of its kind and the premier showcase for the best independent Asian\, Asian diaspora and Pacific Islander cinema \nPotluck Asian America readers can use promo code AAIFF49_NYCAAR for 20% off all ticket \nFor eight years\, director Kimberlee Bassford had been crafting an intimate portrait of Sia Figiel\, a groundbreaking Samoan writer celebrated worldwide as the first to give voice to the struggles of Samoan girls and women. She and her team had followed Figiel’s triumphs and hardships\, from literary stardom to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder\, and had nearly completed the film when tragedy struck. \nWhat emerges is a searing exploration of mental illness in all its complexities. Deeply nuanced and human\, the film is at once a compelling tribute to one woman’s extraordinary life and a reckoning with the devastating consequences of what happens when care for mental health is inconsistent or absent. \nContent warnings: death\, self-harm/suicide\, sexual violence\, violence \n\nKimberlee Bassford is a documentary filmmaker from Hawai‘i who advances equality and social justice by spotlighting stories of girls and women of color\, Asian American and Pacific Islander cultural identity\, and mental health. Her feature documentary BEFORE THE MOON FALLS has won six juried awards including Best Documentary at CAAMFest\, Best Feature at the DOCUTAH International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the Festival International du Film documentaire Océanian (FIFO).

SUMMARY:Masters of Sleep Launch Party with Jianan Qian\, Alyssa Asquith & Na Zhong
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the launch of Masters of Sleep and Other Stories! \nAccent Editions is delighted to celebrate the publication of Masters of Sleep and Other Stories by Zhu Yue. Please join translators Jianan Qian @jianan_qian and Alyssa Asquith @alyssajasquith \, along with editor Na Zhong @sweetmedicine_nz \, for an evening of conversation exploring Zhu Yue’s uncanny\, witty\, and unforgettable fiction. Together\, they will discuss the collaborative process of translation\, the book’s literary world\, and what it means to bring one of China’s most distinctive contemporary voices to English-language readers. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. \nOriginally published in China in 2006\, Zhu’s stories take the reader on a mind-bending\, wildly imaginative journey where eccentric and magical characters embark on quests\, confront paradoxes\, travel to distant planets\, master esoteric arts\, fall in love\, and escape death. \nA gloriously innovative and versatile writer\, Zhu Yue playfully interrogates many so-called “Western” ideals and values: What is the value of invention if it has no practical use? How much of ourselves are we willing to sacrifice for wealth and greatness? And to what extent is a person’s physical existence a sufficient expression of their individuality? \nPoster: Jingyi He

SUMMARY:Images of America: Chinese in Tehama County
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar on Images of America: Chinese in Tehama County with Jessica Chew. During the California Gold Rush\, Red Bluff emerged as one of Northern California’s most important transportation hubs. Called the “head of navigation” on the Sacramento River\, travelers\, merchants\, miners\, loggers\, and agricultural workers journeyed here and continued north in California\, seeking their fortunes. Chinese immigrants established a thriving Chinatown that served as a center of economic development providing lodging for seasonal workers\, employment opportunities\, banking\, and correspondence services that linked laborers to their families in China. \nJessica will share insights from her research into her family history\, uncovering historical records\, newspaper archives\, family photographs and recording oral history interviews. She will describe how forgotten family stories were pieced together to illustrate the history of Red Bluff’s Chinatown. Her presentation will demonstrate how genealogy research can help bring forgotten communities back to life\, preserve stories before they are lost\, and reconnect families with a shared heritage spanning more than 150 years. \nDate: Saturday\, August 8\, 2026\, Time: 10:00 AM (US Pacific Time)/ 1PM EST \nVenue (online): Zoom \nJessica Chew is the founder of the Helen and Joe Chew Foundation and the only grandchild of Joe You Chew\, a Chinese American born in Red Bluff\, California’s Historic Chinatown in 1921. As a sixth generation Chinese American whose family immigrated to America in 1865 as herbalist’s physicians\, Jessica is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Red Bluff’s Chinatown and its importance as the last steamboat stop on the Sacramento River during the Gold Rush.

SUMMARY:Film: A Tale of Two Sisters (장화\, 홍련)
DESCRIPTION:A Tale of Two Sisters (장화\, 홍련)\nDirector: Kim Jee-woon \nFriday\, August 7th\, 2026 at 9:00 PM \nSynopsis: In a remote rural village\, at the end of a quiet country road lined with wildflowers\, stands a solitary Japanese-style wooden house. By day\, the house is picturesque enough to seem as though the sound of a piano might drift from its windows. But when darkness falls\, it takes on a chilling and ominous presence. \nIt is in this house\, steeped in an unsettling atmosphere\, that two beautiful sisters\, Su-mi and Su-yeon—neither quite children nor adults—begin living with their elegant yet emotionally volatile stepmother. From the day they move in together\, a terrifying family ghost story begins to unfold. \nAfter returning home from a lengthy stay in Seoul for treatment\, the sisters are warmly welcomed by their stepmother\, Eun-joo. Despite her apparent affection\, the girls clearly feel uneasy around her. From their very first day back\, strange occurrences begin to plague the household. Family members experience disturbing visions and suffer from recurring nightmares. \nDetermined to care for her younger sister and her father\, Moo-hyeon\, in place of their deceased mother\, Su-mi takes on the role of protector. Su-yeon\, who bears a striking resemblance to her late mother\, lives in constant fear. Tensions quickly escalate between the sensitive and unstable Eun-joo and the two sisters\, while their father remains a passive observer of the growing conflict. \nAs Eun-joo’s emotional instability deepens and fear begins to consume the household\, Su-mi struggles desperately to protect her sister. Meanwhile\, a series of increasingly bizarre and terrifying events unfolds throughout the house… \nTickets: Free (RSVP Required)

SUMMARY:AAIFF Film: Love Massacre 4K Restoration
DESCRIPTION:This film will be screened in-person only. Asian American International Film Festival is the nation’s first and longest running festival of its kind and the premier showcase for the best independent Asian\, Asian diaspora and Pacific Islander cinema \nPotluck Asian America readers can use promo code AAIFF49_NYCAAR for 20% off all ticket \nSet in the United States and written by Joyce Chan\, LOVE MASSACRE follows college student Ivy (Brigitte Lin) as she tries to help her friend Joy\, who is depressed and delirious after a breakup. Ivy soon becomes involved with Joy’s married brother\, Chu Chung. Suffering from a hereditary mental illness\, Chung eventually spirals into violence as he breaks into Ivy’s dormitory and goes on a killing spree. \nThis unsettling\, visually striking Hong Kong New Wave gem — thanks to William Chang’s debut as art director — exudes an experimental spirit\, uses bold colours to express emotion on screen\, and transforms Lin’s image as the golden girl of Taiwanese romantic dramas. \nContent warning: blood/gore\, death\, self-harm/suicide\, violence \n\nPatrick Tam started his career in television at TVB. The first feature film he directed was THE SWORD (1980)\, an innovative wuxia film that helped usher in the era of the Hong Kong New Wave. His knack for visual flair continued to flourish in LOVE MASSACRE (1981)\, NOMAD (1982)\, and FINAL VICTORY (1987). He was awarded Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Hong Kong Film Awards for AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (2006).

SUMMARY:Book Talk | The Hyphenated Life by Dr Han Ren
DESCRIPTION:For readers of Permission to Come Home\, Minor Feelings\, and Pleasure Activism\, an insightful guide for “hyphenates” seeking to better understand themselves and help others understand them\, too. \nWhat does it mean to live a hyphenated life? \nSo many folks are forced to toggle across the multiple layers of who they are\, and across the diverse spaces they occupy. They may be children of immigrants\, 1.5 gen\, of color; they may be disabled\, neurodivergent\, or queer. Regardless of how they identify\, they exist in an in-between space while also trying to fit into the dominant culture. With a foot in multiple worlds\, belonging fully to none\, it can be hard to figure out where they fit in. \nDr. Han Ren\, licensed psychologist and a hyphenate herself\, seeks to offer solutions for those with intersectional identities to fully express who they are in any and every environment. The Hyphenated Life is an intersectional\, inside out excavation of how existing in marginalized bodies affects the ways folks show up in dominant culture and predominantly white spaces. \nOffering tools\, stories\, conversations\, solutions and insights\, this book will resonate with anyone who is navigating the intricacies of their multicultural identity development. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nHan Ren\, PhD\, is a hyphenated professional: licensed clinical and school psychologist\, speaker\, educator\, and content creator. She is also a 1.5-generation Chinese-American immigrant\, neurodivergent mind\, mother\, partner\, and only child. Dr. Ren holds a doctorate in Child Clinical and School Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin\, a Master of Education in Special Education from the University of Houston\, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan. She was an adjunct professor at UT Austin and a former pre-K special educator. Han lives in Austin\, Texas\, where she co-leads Pivot Psychology Austin\, a group private practice. \nIN CONVERSATION WITH \nKimmy Wu\, MHC\, MA is a NYC-based psychotherapist\, writer\, and founder whose work lives in the hyphenated spaces—between cultures\, identities\, and ways of belonging. Born and raised in Taiwan\, and now rooted in New York City\, she brings an embodied understanding of what it means to hold multiple worlds at once without dissolving the tension between them. Her clinical practice centers on narrative\, relational\, and anti-oppressive frameworks\, with a particular focus on intimacy\, identity\, and the slow work of reclaiming wholeness across fractured contexts. She writes about these themes on her Substack\, Between Living & Dreaming\, and is the founder of Thirdspace\, a relational technology company dedicated to exploring the depth possible in close relationships. She comes to The Hyphenated Life not just as a clinician\, but as someone who has lived the intersections the book highlights—and has spent years helping others find language for it.

SUMMARY:Webinar: State of AAPIs in US and NYC Reports
DESCRIPTION:Unlock the Findings in our Live Webinar \nTo learn more about what comes next for AAPIs across NYC’s five boroughs and identify opportunities for collaboration\, join us for a webinar on Thursday\, August 6 at 8am PT/11am ET. Hosted by Shamina Singh\, TAAF Board Member and Founder and President of the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth\, we’ll dive into how to turn the findings into solutions. Kindly RSVP to events@taaf.org. \nTAAF Launches State of AAPIs Research Series to Shed Light on the Lived Experiences of AAPIs\nTAAF launched the State of AAPIs research series\, beginning with a national report to set a baseline of the lived experiences of AAPIs across the country and paired with a first-of-its-kind\, borough-level primary data analysis of AAPIs in New York City. TAAF will draw on these findings to convene leaders across sectors and drive solutions through the TAAF Cities initiative. \nThe State of AAPIs national report offers an in-depth look at how AAPIs are navigating economic insecurity\, safety concerns\, and feelings of belonging across the country. According to a nationally representative survey of 1\,500 AAPI adults:  https://taaf.org/our-work/state-of-aapis-national-report \n\n51% struggled to save money or build financial security in the past 12 months\, a figure that rose to 60% or higher among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI)\, Vietnamese\, and Korean respondents.\n31% struggled to access safe and stable housing and 30% received government or community assistance in the past year\, with nearly as many (28%) reporting difficulty accessing those benefits.\nMore than half adopted avoidance behaviors\, such as carrying identification or avoiding certain places out of fear of bias from police or immigration officials\, rising to 62% among Vietnamese respondents.\n\nThe State of AAPIs New York City report presents a borough-level analysis of the experiences and needs of AAPIs in the city. TAAF surveyed 1\,400 AAPI residents across all five boroughs and found: https://taaf.org/our-work/taaf-nyc#state-of-aapis-report \n\n59% struggled to save toward a financial future\, and 50% worried about affording essentials like food\, housing\, and utilities\, in the past year.\nMore than 1 in 3 AAPIs (37%) experienced adverse treatment in the past year in their borough\, including: being insulted or called names; being harassed or threatened; being victim to physical attack; and being unfairly stopped\, searched\, questioned or abused by police.\nMore than 1 in 4 AAPIs said they faced challenges related to voting (27%)\, accessing immigration services (28%)\, and everyday communication due to language barriers (29%) in the past year.\n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Description: \nJoin NYSEAN and Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU for a talk by George B. Radics\, senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Radics will discuss his new book\, Emotional Filipinos The American Myth of the Lazy Native and Islamic Separatism in the Philippines. \nAbout the Book: \nEmotional Filipinos documents how in the first half of the twentieth century\, the United States attempted to build a colony in the Philippines in its own image—one fraught with racist notions of what it means to be civilized\, developed\, and worthy of self-rule. I argue that these imported notions of race and modernity left a profound imprint on the nation. Moreover\, with the menacing rise of Islamic “terrorism\,” political polarization\, populism\, xenophobia\, and isolationism\, conventional wisdom has attributed this rise to a “failed state” or economic insecurity and cultural backlash. In this book\, I explore emotions as a driving force behind social action. The Philippines is currently experiencing the longest-running Muslim-Christian conflict in the modern world and an increasingly anti-Western populist government. By unpacking the role of emotions from the American colonial period to the present\, my book blurs the line between American colonizer and Muslim-Filipino “terrorist\,” highlighting the lasting effects of America’s footprint in Southeast Asia.  My book is the culmination of over two decades of engagement with the Philippines and its southern islands of Mindanao.  It provides an analytical sociology of race and emotion lens\, borne out of the Global South\, to study other emerging conflicts throughout the world. \nTo hear more about the book\, listen to Dr. Radics’s podcast episode with the New Books Network\, a NYSEAN Partner. \nAbout the Speaker: \nGeorge B. Radics is a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore. After receiving his PhD in sociology from the National University of Singapore (NUS)\, he earned a juris doctor with a concentration in Asian law from the University of Washington and worked for the Supreme Court of Guam for two years. He is also a member of the New York Bar. His work involves the judicial system\, notions of justice\, human rights\, minorities\, and comparative legal studies\, and his articles have been published in Columbia Human Rights Law Review\, Journal of Human Rights\, Current Sociology\, and Philippine Sociological Review. \nRegistration: \nTo attend the event in person\, please register here.
