This program is in partnership with Chinese Theater Works. \nFree Admission | Registration Required \nLocation: Open Door Senior Center | 168 Grand Street\, New York\, NY 10013 \n

SUMMARY:Anna May Wong Double Feature: Shanghai Express & Daughter of Shanghai
DESCRIPTION:A rare screening of two Anna May Wong films on the rooftop of Ornithology Jazz Club.\n\n\nAnna May Wong\, considered Hollywood’s first Asian American film star\, had a groundbreaking career that spanned five decades and nearly every medium\, from silent films\, talkies\, and television to radio\, theatre\, and vaudeville. In response to the racism and sexism she faced as a Chinese American woman\, Wong continually reinvented herself on-screen\, often with spectacular results. \nShanghai Express (1932) and Daughter of Shanghai (1937) are perhaps two of the most important films she made in Hollywood during the 1930s. Join this double feature with author Katie Gee Salisbury\, one of Wong’s biographers\, who will introduce each film and answer questions following each screening with a brief intermission in between. Copies of her book\, Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong\, will also be available for sale. \nTickets are nonrefundable. Price includes admission to both film screenings and the cover for Ornithology’s jazz club. Cocktails will be available for purchase at the bar downstairs. \nSchedule \n8:00 pm – Doors open\n8:30 pm – Host Introduction + Shanghai Express\n10:00 pm – Intermission\n10:15 pm – Host Introduction + Daughter of Shanghai \nAbout the Films \nShanghai Express (122 mins)\, an entertaining ensemble piece\, follows a group of foreigners\, each with something to hide (including two women of ill repute)\, traveling by train from Peiping to Shanghai. When the train makes an unexpected stop in the middle of the night\, the first-class passengers are thrust into an unforeseen drama and find themselves collectively at the mercy of a dangerous Chinese revolutionary. Directed by Josef von Sternberg\, Marlene Dietrich stars as Shanghai Lily\, with a show-stopping supporting performance from Anna May Wong as Hui Fei. \nDaughter of Shanghai (62 mins) is based on a story supposedly ripped from the headlines about a human-trafficking ring smuggling undocumented immigrants into the U.S. When Lan Ying Lin (Anna May Wong) and her father accidentally discover the culprits\, her father is murdered and Lan Ying vows to avenge his death by exposing the crime syndicate behind the operation. Government agent Kim Lee (Philip Ahn) works in tandem with Lan Ying to catch the syndicate and at the same time falls in love with her. Directed by Robert Florey and written specifically as a starring vehicle for Wong\, the film established Wong and Ahn as the first Asian American actors to play a leading romantic couple in the sound era.

SUMMARY:Film and Panel: About Face: Disrupting Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of Lincoln Center’s Chinese Arts Week and China Institute’s centennial celebration\, About Face: Disrupting Ballet\, a new feature-length documentary\, spotlights the efforts of former New York City Ballet soloist Georgina Pazcoguin and author\, producer\, and choreographer Phil Chan as they launch their global Final Bow for Yellowface movement and challenge the dance world to rid ballet of long-standing Asian stereotypes. This vivid account of the growing pains of creative evolution reveals the tension and risks artists endure as they push classical artforms to more authentically reflect audiences today. \nAfter the screening\, join us for a talk-back with the film’s subjects and China Institute of America’s Director of Programs\, Susan Yuqing Feng. For a century\, China Institute of America has been dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Unfinished Business by Clare Osongco
DESCRIPTION:In this funny\, warmly chaotic novel\, a floundering office worker discovers her mother’s ghost is trapped in the company Slack server\, and must free her by resolving her own troubled love life. \nA few months ago\, Ruby Ocampo’s mother\, Adela\, died at her desk at work. Now\, lost and driven by a misplaced sense of obligation\, Ruby’s taken a job at the megacorporation where Adela worked for decades—and\, to her horror\, she discovers her mother’s ghost is trapped in the company Slack. \nRuby has never lived up to her mother’s expectations in life\, but to set her free\, she’ll have to resolve Adela’s unfinished business. She makes a list of all the ways she could live more like her mother would have wanted\, covering everything from her stunted career to her love life (#5 on the list: date someone in a higher tax bracket!). Soon her quest to free Adela gets Ruby entangled with two men at the office who might be able to help: the estranged childhood friend her mom never approved of—who’s the only one she can confide in about this supernatural crisis—and the hot but vaguely sinister junior executive who’s been paying her a confusing amount of attention. \nIn order to give her mom a chance at the afterlife\, Ruby must address her shortcomings one by one—and reevaluate her inherited ideas about love\, work\, and what’s truly important along the way. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHORS\n\n\n\n\nClare Osongco is a mixed Filipino American author living in Los Angeles who likes to write about falling in love\, messy family relationships\, and ghosts. SUMMARY:CARE & CONNECT: Understanding & Recognizing Cultural Trauma
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America is proud to partner with Connect/Hamilton Madison House to present a series of public programs focused on mental wellness: Care & Connect. This series aims to provide accessible resources while creating a space for open conversation\, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health support. \nJoin us for our second Care & CONNECT event\, Understanding & Recognizing Cultural Trauma\, a workshop led by Hamilton Madison House’s Dr. Jihan Ryu and Dr. Kristin Kim-Martin.\n\nDr. Kim-Martin is a psychologist whose research centers on cultural trauma and the immigration experience. Her dissertation explored how immigration shapes the help-seeking behaviors of second-generation Korean Americans. Dr. Jihan Ryu is CONNECT’s primary psychiatrist\, providing trauma-informed\, culturally competent care in our Lower East Side community.\n\nOpen to community members and mental health professionals alike\, this workshop offers an accessible entry point into what we mean by “cultural trauma” and an opportunity to reflect on how our own experiences may be shaped by it — as well as tools for connecting with others across similar and different cultures in ways that honor our histories\, traumas\, and varied cultural norms.\n\nWe will explore how trauma translates across generations\, drawing on historical events and the communities they impacted — including the Korean War\, American slavery\, the Ukrainian Holodomor\, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution. And making full use of our venue\, the workshop will engage directly with MOCA’s permanent exhibition.\n\nFree Admission | Registration Required

SUMMARY:Awakening Lion + Yingge Dance 南国醒狮 x 英歌
DESCRIPTION:As part of the opening day’s festivities for Lincoln Center’s Chinese Arts Week\, we present a performance of the millennia-old south China theater procession known as Xing Shi or the Awakening Lion (南国醒狮). The charismatic Awakening Lion hails originally from Guangdong\, which is also the home of Yingge dance (英歌)\, a highly stylized and energetic folk dance that merges Chinese opera acrobatics\, costuming and make-up with characters from classical novels such as White Snake and Water Margin. Both of these traditional arts will leap to life on The Dance Floor with the Awakening Lion Dance presented by Zhao Family Lion Dance Company\, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage carrier\, accompanied by the gravity-defying Fumei Youth Yingge Team from the town of Puning in Guangdong.

DESCRIPTION:From ABGs to “Wasian” TikTok: How Asian Identity Became an Aesthetic \nThis engaging conversation explores how pop culture\, social media\, beauty trends\, and dating discourse have shaped how Asian identity is perceived\, performed\, and consumed online. \nAuthors Kaila Yu and Joan King will examine the rise of labels and aesthetics such as ABG culture\, “boba liberal” identity\, K-pop beauty ideals\, and “Wasian” TikTok\, asking what happens when a community’s identity becomes a trend. SUMMARY:Their Films\, Our Films: Black Narcissus
DESCRIPTION:A series of screenings & discussions contrasting films about India/South Asia by Western directors with films by South Asians ourselves.\n\n\nFilmed and released on the eve of Indian and Pakistani independence\, Black Narcissus is globally lauded as a stunning cinematic project. It won the Oscars for ‘Best Color Cinematography’ and ‘Best Color Art Direction’ the year it was released. It also upholds the Western tradition of using Indian landscapes and bodies as mere storytelling props. The Indians are the background for a “larger” story focusing on Westerners dealing with the “harsh” and “inhospitable” landscape. The film features brown face and\, unsurprisingly\, just one Indian actor. \nThe film continues to be lauded for its epic colors\, landscapes (all hand painted and not actually shot anywhere near the Himalayas)\, and story\, but critics constantly ignore the racism\, orientalism\, and the ever prevalent stench of Empire while discussing this film. \nThis screening is part of a larger series of screenings and discussions attempting to pair Western films about South Asia with South Asian films dealing with similar themes or spaces. Black Narcissus will be paired with the Indian film A Death in the Gunj screening on 7/27(tickets available here). This series is a chance to go beyond the binaries of Bollywood and racist Indian caricatures to understand what it truly means to make Indian cinema. \nJoin us for a rare screening and discussion of Black Narcissus\, led by Anjali Krishnakumar\, an Indian writer\, chef\, and film critic. \nThe ticket price includes admission to the film screening and the cover for Ornithology jazz club. Drinks are available for purchase at the bar downstairs and food is available at the cafe next door. \n7:30 pm – Doors open \n8:00 pm – Host introduction + Screening \n10:00 pm – Film discussion \nAbout the film: \nBlack Narcissus (1947) (100 mins) \nA group of Anglican nuns\, led by Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr)\, are sent to a mountain in the Himalayas. The climate in the region is hostile\, and the nuns are housed in an odd old palace. They work to establish a school and a hospital\, but slowly their focus shifts. Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron) falls for a government worker\, Mr. Dean (David Farrar)\, and begins to question her vow of celibacy. As Sister Ruth obsesses over Mr. Dean\, Sister Clodagh becomes immersed in her own memories of love.
