SUMMARY:Like a Wave We Break: A Fireside Chat with Jane Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join Like a Wave We Break: A Fireside Chat with Jane Chen moderated by Karen Choi. In her best-selling memoir\, Like a Wave We Break\, Jane chronicles the rise of Embrace Global—the company she co-founded that has helped save over one million babies. When the organization nearly collapsed after a decade\, she was forced to confront how growing up amid domestic violence had shaped both her deep commitment to serving the most vulnerable—and the burnout and personal breakdown that followed. \nTaking place during Mental Health Awareness Month and AANHPI Heritage Month\, the discussion will explore themes of mental health and cultural stigma often experienced within the AANHPI community\, resilience\, preventing burnout\, and what it means to rebuild after breaking. We hope you’ll join us for an honest and meaningful dialogue rooted in reflection\, healing\, and collective strength. \nTickets \nFree – General Admission; \n$50 – General Admission + Signed Book + Donation to Womankind

SUMMARY:Kimora Lee Simmons on the birth of Baby Phat with Fern Mallis (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join model and entrepreneur founder Kimora Lee Simmons for a conversation with Fern Mallis about her journey from the runway to becoming an enduring cultural force in fashion with her iconic lifestyle brand\, Baby Phat. \nDiscovered at just 13\, Kimora Lee Simmons rose quickly through the ranks of high fashion\, signing an exclusive contract with Chanel and appearing in the pages of Vogue\, Elle\, and Harper’s Bazaar. That early immersion shaped a distinctive vision — merging style\, storytelling\, and a keen sense of cultural influence. In 1999\, Kimora launched Baby Phat\, transforming it into a global lifestyle brand that redefined fashion inclusivity and female empowerment. As founder and creative director\, she expanded the brand across apparel\, accessories\, fragrance\, beauty\, and beyond\, creating a lasting cultural legacy that continues to thrive today — and with her daughters Ming Lee and Aoki Lee now helping to guide its evolution and connect with a new generation\, Baby Phat is entering a new era. \nIn a conversation with Fern Mallis\, hear Simmons reflects on a career that has consistently shaped and anticipated the culture — and find out where Baby Phat is headed next.

SUMMARY:Conference: The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures
DESCRIPTION:Exploring grassroots power & Asian American futures in NYC after Zohran Mamdani’s historic election.\n\n\nThe recent election of Zohran Mamdani—the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor—marks a historic shift in New York City’s political landscape. This victory stands not only as a milestone for AAPI and Muslim representation but as a testament to the power of grassroots\, working-class organizing. While often characterized as the “Mamdani Moment\,” this campaign’s trajectory from just 3% in early polling offers a profound case study in the collective “social technology” of door-to-door engagement and the merging of diverse identities. \nBuilding from this watershed moment\, AAARI’s 2026 symposium\, The New Asian NYC: Mobilization\, Grassroots Power & Pluralistic Futures\, invites a deeper conversation about what such victories reveal—how they reshape understandings of Asian American identity\, highlight the intersections of class and race\, and chart evolving strategies for civic engagement in an increasingly polarized era.

SUMMARY:Book: Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Reciprocity: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarity with the Earth will create a space dedicated to illuminating\, unpacking\, and strengthening understandings of cross-racial feminist connections as a tool for environmental and food justice. You will explore hands-on practices and healing modalities\, from gardening and composting to mutual aid and herbalism\, with contributors of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books\, 2025) and other practitioners in these spaces in order to facilitate deeper engagement within these intersections. The program will include a reading from the book\, panel discussion\, and nature walk. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSpeakers include:\nRosa Bordallo is a farmer advocate\, musician\, and native of Guåhan in the Mariånas. She currently resides in upstate NY on unceded land of the Oneida and Kanienʼkehá꞉ka peoples. Rosa credits her Chamorro upbringing for her commitment to political and cultural agitation and to Indigenous sovereignty and decolonial futures. Her essay\, “The Breadfruit Does Not Fall Far from the Tree” appears in the anthology\, We Are Each Other’s Liberation: Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities (Haymarket Books). She has released several albums and EPs as a solo artist and previously wrote and performed music as her alter ego\, Manett. \nEman Rashid is a Palestinian-American educator who teaches about Native American and endangered plants and wildlife. She’s also a media consultant with 10+ years in press rooms. A West Bank Native\, Eman now organizes across the nation for Palestinian dignity through Indigenous land stewardship\, education and activism across generations. \nTaylor Rae of Raeflower Holistics is an herbalist\, archivist\, and clayworker who is passionate about rekindling the land relationships of herself and her communities. After earning a B.A in Environmental Science from Northwestern University with a research concentration in pollination biology\, Taylor craved connection with land that cracked open the restrictive parameters set by western academia and offered space for reciprocity\, remembering\, and collaboration. Through her land practices\, Taylor aims to tell the stories of her lineage\, create safety in holistic care spaces\, combat the oppressive structures\, and support community in finding respite in the land once again. \nPista (any pronouns) is a queer South Asian herbalist\, educator and organizer currently based on occupied Lenapehoking land in so-called Queens\, NY. After many years of working in the tech industry\, Pista began composting at the start of the pandemic to re-center mutuality & living connections. Pista works now to compost systems\, beliefs & ideas that no longer serve communities in order to rebirth futures of greater reciprocity and care through connecting ancestral Earthwork with abolition. \nThis event is hosted by late-bloomer.info\, a community gardener\, cultural organizer\, and co-editor of the anthology We Are Each Other’s Liberation. There will be a limited number of copies of the anthology available for sliding scale donation ($10-25 suggested). \nAccessibility Notes:\nThis event is being held at an outdoor community space with uneven grounds that are not easily traversable with wheelchairs or other walking devices. There no on-site bathroom\, and the nearest publicly accessible restroom is at a grocery store on the corner. Please plan accordingly and practice recommended public health measures including masking (especially those with respiratory or immune issues)\, testing negative pre-event\, and staying home if you feel unwell or have symptoms. \nThis project is a part of the What Can We Do? artist grant program\, presented by Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and is supported by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. SUMMARY:Book Launch: Bindu Bansinath
DESCRIPTION:Bindu Bansinath launches her debut\, deemed “the most promising debut I’ve read in decades” by NYT bestselling author Gary Shteyngart!\n\n\nBook Launch: Bindu Bansinath presents Men Like OursWine reception to follow \nBindu Bansinath\, senior writer for New York Magazine’s The Cut\, launches her debut Men Like Ours\, a darkly funny and moving story about death\, life\, and community in a South Asian suburban enclave of New Jersey. When Matthew Pillai is found dead\, slumped over the wheel of his BMW\, the women of Willow Road are roped into the investigation of their friend’s death\, ultimately finding that despite their casual backstabbing and generational feuds\, in the end there is no one to turn to but each other. Deemed “the most promising debut I’ve read in decades” by New York Times bestselling author Gary Shteyngart\, Bansinath reads from and discusses the book before an audience Q&A and signing.

SUMMARY:W.O.W. Project: Storefront Origins\, Arts Activism\, and the Worlds We Build
DESCRIPTION:In this opening conversation\, Mei Lum and Diane Wong will revisit the origins of W.O.W—from their early kitchen table conversations to its evolution into a community arts initiative that centers women\, queer\, non-binary\, and trans Asian youth as stewards of Chinatown’s creative culture. Grounded in personal stories and collective memory\, this dialogue invites us to pause and to consider how spaces like W.O.W. speak to the possibility of a neighborhood defined by people rather than by profit\, where value is measured through cultural continuity and collective belonging rather than speculative capital. The conversation also opens up questions about the tensions and possibilities of doing cultural work in a moment shaped by ongoing struggles over land\, safety\, and displacement—and how we might imagine the next decade together. \nThe conversation will be moderated by W.O.W.’s youth leaders and alumni. Whether you’ve been part of W.O.W. since the beginning or are just getting to know the work\, we welcome you to join us for an evening of reflection\, celebration\, and community.
