SUMMARY:Siyan Wang: Mother Warriors (Artist Talk)
DESCRIPTION:Siyan Wong’s paintings depict immigrant Chinese women working in garment factories\, restaurants\, homecare\, and street vendors. Inspired by the immigrant dreams of a better life and the reality of survival in a dehumanizing economy\, Wong notes that her paintings\, “make the lives of Chinese women\, and the working poor\, visible while directing the viewers’ gaze to their body and soul as they toil.” A self-taught artist\, Wong’s outsider painting style\, replete with decorative patterning\, shallow pictorial space and panning compositions\, offer a closely observed\, non-filtered\, cinematic view of the unrelenting struggles\, yet earnest fortitude of her subjects. \nIn collaboration with New York Artists Equity (NYAE)\, Siyan also presents two simultaneous exhibits exploring the immigrant experience: \n“Familiar Stranger” featuring artworks by Luisa Henao\, Ying Hung\, Sharon Cheuk Wun Lee\, Elim Mak\, and Mary Ting. \n“Immigration in America” featuring artworks by NYC high school students \nExhibition Dates: 3/12/26 – 4/11/26\nOpening Reception: Thursday\, March 12th\, 6 – 8pm\nArtist Talk: Saturday March 21st\, 3 – 5pm

SUMMARY:Beyond Headlines: The Human Story of Americans in China An Official Book Launch and Conversation with Author William Brown
DESCRIPTION:Behind the headlines and geopolitics lies a rarely heard story\, the lives of ordinary Americans who became part of China’s history. \nFor decades\, Professor William Brown traveled more than 200\,000 kilometers across China and the United States to uncover letters\, photographs\, and memories of Americans who lived in China across generations — teachers\, doctors\, diplomats\, pilots\, and families whose ties endured long after they returned home. Their experiences reveal friendships and shared struggles that shaped mutual understanding far more deeply than official policy ever could. \nThese Americans helped establish early hospitals and schools\, advanced education for women and students with disabilities\, opposed the opium trade\, and supported China’s sovereignty during an era of imperial competition. During World War II\, the American volunteer pilots known as the Flying Tigers fought alongside Chinese forces against Japan\, a legacy still commemorated in China today. \nThrough vivid journeys across deserts\, villages\, and modern cities\, the book shows history as lived experience: people meeting\, learning\, and sometimes staying for a lifetime. \nThis year marks the 100th anniversary of China Institute\, founded to promote U.S.–China exchange through education and human connection. We invite you to join this conversation with the author\, hear these remarkable stories firsthand\, and explore how personal encounters continue to shape understanding between the two nations today.

A global musical alchemist and cultural agent provocateur” by Songlines (UK)\, Sunny Jain is a composer\, drummer\, dhol player and thought leader. \nSunny Jain’s Wild Wild East\, encompasses a myriad facets of Jain’s identity and sonically paints the journey of his own family’s immigration story. He sources musical inspiration from the scores of Bollywood classics\, Punjabi folk traditions\, jazz improvisation\, and rollicking psychedelic styles. His 5 piece band (drums\, vocals\, sax\, guitar\, bass) delivered a fiery NPR Tiny Desk Concert in 2024 and followed it up with an electric live KEXP session in 2025. They toured North America appearing at the iconic Monterey Jazz Festival\, Calgary Jazz Festival\, Victoria Jazz Festival\, The Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, National Museum of Asian Art\, and the historic Bryant Park in NYC. In 2022\, the band made a milestone tour to Pakistan headlining Music Mela in Islamabad\, the Lahore Jazz Festival and performing with master Sufi dhol drummers Nasir Sain Wajdani and Sain Tanveer. Just months prior to that\, Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East performed on the National Mall in Washington D.C. for the renowned Smithsonian Folklife Festival. \nWhile growing up with a deep cultural connection to his South Asian heritage\, Sunny Jain also fell in love with jazz music and prog rock. His eclectic musical upbringing has brought him to perform with percussion legends Mickey Hart & Zakir Hussain and Planet Drum\, to pop icons Ed Sheeran\, David Byrne\, Jon Batiste and Italian Pop Star Jovanotti\, to many jazz luminaries. He has been at the zeitgeist of America’s South Asian sounds for the past 2 decades. SUMMARY:My Dinner with Wong Kim Ark: Food\, Identity\, and the Fight for Birthright Citizenship
DESCRIPTION:AAPI NJ and Teach Asian American Stories invite adults and youths of all backgrounds to join us for a one-night-only community dinner and teach-in on birthright citizenship. \nGuided by Mindie Sobrinski\, Teach Asian American Stories Fellow\, we’ll learn that what’s on the table tells us who belongs at it. \nFrom Filipino sailors to Chinese laborers\, South Asian merchants to Japanese Americans\, Asian communities have long used food to claim their place in this country. At the center of our table sits Wong Kim Ark\, a Chinese American cook whose fight for birthright citizenship produced a Supreme Court ruling that still shapes American law today. \nBut as birthright citizenship faces renewed attack\, the histories carried in every plate of lumpia\, chop suey\, chaat\, and teriyaki remind us that the question of who gets to be an American has never been settled — and that what we do right now matters. \nCome hungry for history (and dinner!). Leave ready to act. \nFree and open to all. Professional Development hours for teachers awarded.

SUMMARY:Theater Takeover Tuesday & Potluck Asian America: Hoppers
DESCRIPTION:Potluck Asian America is joining forces with the community-based Theater Takeover Tuesdays crew to support the new animated film Hoppers across two special dates! \nTheater Takeover Tuesdays is a grassroots moviegoing group organized by Julie Huang and friends that brings communities together to support films\, particularly those connected to Asian and Asian American actors\, writers\, directors\, and creators. The gatherings began during the SAG-AFTRA strike\, when artists could not promote their work in the usual ways and people were eager to reconnect after years of COVID isolation. \nEveryone buys their own ticket\, showing up simply to support the film and the artists behind it. After the screening\, the audience often gathers in the theater lobby for a group photo or short video to capture the moment. \nFrom time to time\, actors\, writers\, directors\, stunt performers\, and others connected to the film stop by to meet the audience. The dream is to bring artists and communities together in a joyful\, authentic way while encouraging more organizations to join the effort and help fill theaters through the simple act of showing up. \nTuesday\, March 17\nJoin us for the 6:10 PM showing at Regal Essex Crossing\nTickets: $7.99 (+ $2 handling fee)\nCheck out this video on how you can get your Regal Crown Club tix for this price! https://youtube.com/shorts/T0LEbd1_LHY \nTuesday\, March 24\nMeet Karen Huie\, the voice of Grandma Tanaka in Hoppers\, at 5:00 PM!\nLa Caverna\, 122 Rivington Street

SUMMARY:Musical: At the Edge of Chinatown part of Rough Draft Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Created by the music group\, The Slants\, At the Edge of Chinatown follows three Asian-American teenagers navigating fractured identities while their family restaurants face extinction in a rapidly changing Chinatown. It’s an explosive musical about third-culture kids who must remix the old world to build their own\, proving that sometimes the most powerful form of preservation is fearless reinvention. With an emo/pop-punk score powering the show\, this story pulls from our own backstories of growing up in restaurants\, navigating Chinatowns around the world\, and figuring out what it means to forge an identity that’s entirely your own. \nOn March 12 at 7pm\, you’ll catch demo versions of songs performed by the two of us (Joe X. Jiang and Simon Tam) at the Little Theater (LPAC). Tickets are only $10\, and students get in free. After the performance\, stick around for a talkback where you can give us feedback and help shape this thing as we continue developing it. If you’re in NYC or know anyone who is\, grab tickets here…and please spread the word! \n

Yet Delhi keeps pulling them back—even as Sachin’s predatory uncle\, Laxman\, hounds Gita. A man of restless ambition\, Laxman ascends through the ranks of a rising Hindu nationalist movement\, caught between his political aspirations and his personal transgressions. As India erupts in violence and long-buried secrets come to light\, the embattled Chopras must reckon with the cost of power\, the weight of tradition\, and the shifting nature of love and allegiance. \nKaran Mahajan worked on The Complex during his 2018-2019 Fellowship at the Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. SUMMARY:Join Potluck Asian America at a Performance of Chinese Republicans with Reception & Talkback - $20 Tickets
DESCRIPTION:Join Potluck Asian America at a special community performance of Chinese Republicans with a pre-show reception catered by Jing Fong and a post-show conversation with Alex Lin and the cast!  $20 Tickets!\nChinese Republicans is a biting new satirical drama from Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Playwright Alex Lin and Award-Winning Director Chay Yew. \nThree high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs\, as they’ve done for decades. But the group is jolted when Katie\, a bright-eyed 24-year-old new to the workforce\, joins to navigate the world of corporate finance. As each of the women attempts to steer Katie towards what they’re certain is best\, they’re forced to grapple with how much they already have and are willing to sacrifice to climb the corporate ladder. \nShifting between sharp-tongued humor and the harsh realities of modern capitalism\, this world premiere production explores themes of assimilation\, intergenerational conflict\, and gender politics in the workplace—all with unflinching wit and empathy. Chinese Republicans is a new play from a thrilling new American voice and tells a truly American story. \nThis performance includes a “pay what you wish” option starting at $20. Availability is limited and we encourage early RSVPs. \nCast: Jennifer Ikeda\, Ben Langhorst\, Jully Lee\, Jodi Long\, Anna Zavelson \nHarold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre\, Laura Pels Theatre\, 111 West 46th Street\, New York\, NY

SUMMARY:Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a CE workshop for affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans.\n\n\nTitle: Supporting Queer Arab/SWANA Americans in Psychotherapy \nSubject: Affirming clinical care with queer second-generation Arab\, Southwest Asian\, and North African Americans. \nCourse Description: “Queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans are a rich\, vibrant\, and diverse community\, yet\, are marginalized within multiple contexts. Anti-Arab\, anti-immigrant\, and cisheteronormative structural norms and policies in the United States intersect with intense cultural and religious beliefs about the incompatibility of sexual and gender diversity and Arab/SWANA identity” (Alsamadi\, 2025\, p.1). Consequently\, queer Arab/SWANA Americans may seek psychotherapy for support in managing stress related to intersectional oppression and disenfranchisement (Alsamadi\, 2025; Chaney et al.\, 2020; Habhab\, 2018; Ikizler & Szymanski\, 2014; Khatib et al.\, 2023). \nThe unique needs of this population are rendered invisible in psychology training programs and continuing education programming. As such\, this workshop will teach attendees (1) relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities; (2) common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans; and (3) how the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind (KRHM; Adames et al.\, 2023) therapeutic approach is relevant to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans. The workshop will conclude with a collaborative case example where attendees will apply the KRHM therapeutic approach to a composite clinical case of a queer second-generation Arab/SWANA American client. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will identify relevant cultural values within Arab/SWANA communities.\nParticipants will identify common themes in psychotherapy with queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\nParticipants will describe the Keeping Radical Healing in Mind therapeutic approach and its relevance to queer second-generation Arab/SWANA Americans.\n\nPresenter Bio: \nDr. Nadia Alsamadi is a queer and nonbinary Palestinian American clinical psychologist\, educator\, and speaker in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area. Dr. Alsamadi is the founder of Beyond the Binary Psychotherapy and Consulting\, PLLC\, where they collaborate with LGBTQ+\, Arab/SWANA\, BIPOC\, and first/second generation immigrant clients to explore issues related to anxiety\, identity\, culture\, oppression\, and empowerment. They support their clients and collaborators in drawing strength and pride from their identities and culture\, resisting false dichotomies\, and reclaiming their own narratives. As a dynamic and engaging speaker\, they build relationships with individuals and organizations to deepen cultural humility\, critical consciousness\, and compassion for the complexity of the human experience. \nYou will also be eligible to earn 3.0 Continuing Education Credits if you hold a New York State License as an LMHC\, LCSW\, LMSW\, LCAT\, LMFT\, LPsyAn (LP)\, or Psychologist. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors #MHC-0300\, licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0114\, licensed marriage and family therapists #MFT-0124\, and licensed psychoanalysts #P-0071. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0793. \nQ’Lective Therapy is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0262. \nPlease Note: This training will not be recorded and the attendance list will only be shared with the presenter.
