SUMMARY:Film: Standing Above The Clouds followed Q&A with director Jalena Keane-Lee
DESCRIPTION:Standing Above the Clouds highlights the movement to protect Mauna Kea through the intergenerational stories of women in three Native Hawaiian families as they stand for the sacred mountain. The film follows teacher and community organizer Pua Case and her two daughters — artist-activists Hāwane Rios and Kapulei Flores — who have been called to stop the telescope since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions and court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests\, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.

SUMMARY:The Story Collider: Unspoken - Stories About Science
DESCRIPTION:True\, personal stories about science\n\n\nThe Story Collider is a storytelling show dedicated to bringing true\, personal stories about science to audiences around the world. Each month we bring five storytellers to the stage to tell their stories of how science impacted their lives in touching\, funny\, and interesting ways. \nJoin us for an evening of stories about science that is not talked about enough\, from mental health to infertility. Spend the evening with 5 stories that need to be heard\, at Caveat\, NYC! \nHosted by Diana Li and Paula Croxson at Caveat NYC. Doors at 6:30pm. Show starts at 7:00pm. \nIn person and livestreamed. Early bird tickets available until until January 19\, 7:00pm. \nStories by:\nDenise Cai\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai\, which is ironic since her last science class was high school biology. Her two biggest regrets are not trying out for the cheerleading team and not starting antidepressants sooner. Both helped shape her path toward understanding how our past experiences guide who we become. She studies how the brain organizes and integrates experiences so memories can inform future choices\, and how this process changes with trauma or aging. Denise co-developed open source Miniscopes\, (tiny head-mounted microscopes) that let researchers watch neurons interact in real time. Using these tools\, her lab has shown that memory systems are not tidy photo albums. They are more like chaotic group chats that constantly link\, relink\, and reshape our identities. Denise is passionate about fostering curiosity\, creativity\, and community. She believes that real scientific breakthroughs arise when diverse perspectives are welcomed and empowered. She still suspects she would have made a great cheerleader. \nDr Zakia Ghafari is an author\, consultant\, and captivating storyteller. An immigrant from Afghanistan\, she weaves powerful narratives of resilience\, womanhood\, and reinvention. Blending science and soul\, she inspires audiences to embrace change\, celebrate strength\, and transform life’s challenges into fuel for a vibrant\, empowered future. \nClare McCormack\, PhD\, is an assistant professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on women’s mental health in pregnancy and the peripartum\, and challenges the “mommy brain” construct. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding interactions between brain\, biology\, and the environment in shaping adaptation to parenthood. Her recent work is among the first to use brain MRI during pregnancy to examine neuroplasticity at the transition to parenthood and its implications for maternal and infant health. \nDr. Kibby McMahon is a licensed clinical psychologist\, researcher\, and digital health entrepreneur who’s obsessed with the emotional complexities of relationships. She earned her BA from Columbia University and her PhD in clinical psychology from Duke University\, where her NIMH-funded research focused on how regulating our own emotions helps us connect more deeply with others. She has held research and clinical roles at Duke University Medical Center\, Columbia University\, Weill Cornell Hospital\, and the Max Planck Institute. Dr. Kibby is a family caregiver and breast cancer survivor- experiences that reshaped how she understands vulnerability\, resilience\, and what it means to care for others while holding yourself together. These threads came together when she co-founded KulaMind\, a digital mental health company that supports loved ones of people with mental illness through evidence-based skills\, coaching\, and AI-powered tools. She also hosts the podcast “A Little Help for Our Friends\,” which explores the invisible emotional labor of loving someone who is struggling with mental health or addiction. She lives in New York with her tornado of a son\, a fluff of a dog\, and a partner-in-crime husband. \nAnnie Tan is an educator\, activist\, writer and storyteller from Manhattan’s Chinatown. Annie’s work has been featured in Huffington Post\, New Republic\, PBS’ Asian Americans\, RISK! and twice on The Moth Radio Hour on NPR. Annie is writing a memoir about connecting with her immigrant parents despite not sharing a common fluent language. Find more at annietan.com.

SUMMARY:MOCAKIDS Meet & Greet with Chi-Hoon Kim & Juniper Eisenberg & MOCACREATE
DESCRIPTION:Join Chi-Hoon Kim & Juniper Eisenberg\, authors of Juniper & the Red Swoosh\, for a workshop that brings Juniper’s math-filled world to life!\n\n\nAfter an interactive read-aloud\, explore how the abacus has been used by Chinese and Chinese American families for generations and inspired the innovation of a universally designed abacus to increase math literacy. Build your own simple abacus modeled after the surapan abacus and try out beginner counting techniques drawn from Juniper’s problem-solving journey. Experiment with exploring place values and number sense by setting numbers\, basic arithmetic\, and coin-counting challenges using both the 3D-Click™ abacus and your handmade version. Then\, design your own collage creature inspired by the Red Swoosh with teaching artist Yu Rong. A variety of textures\, shapes\, colors\, and materials will be available for participants to mix\, layer\, and arrange into their own imaginative creatures. \nDesigned for curious makers and math lovers of all ages\, this hands-on workshop invites participants to learn\, play\, and discover how math\, culture\, and creativity come together. Best for ages 6-12. Older and younger siblings are welcome. Book signing and purchase will follow the reading! \nSCHEDULE \n\nThe MOCACREATE drop-in arts & crafts will run from 2 – 4 PM.\nThe MOCAKIDS Meet & Greet with Chi-Hoon and Juniper will start at 2:30 PM.\n\nThis event is FREE with museum admission! Reservations are encouraged. MOCA Family Level Members should enter their promo code to access complimentary tickets. \nAbout Juniper and the Red Swoosh: \nJuniper\, a nine-year-old girl with a vision impairment\, sets out to Corn Market to buy kernels to make popcorn. In front of the market\, she encounters a red creature that is swooshing out with a bag of coins totaling 100 cents. \nJuniper works with Ms. Maize\, the shop owner\, to remediate the theft. Along the way\, Juniper uses her 3D-Click™ abacus to keep track of the coins she retrieves and teaches readers how to add using the abacus. \nThis interactive book provides step-by-step instructions for readers to follow Juniper as she sets her abacus to tally the coins. \nAbout Chi-Hoon Kim and Juniper Eisenberg: \nJuniper Eisenberg \nJuniper is a brave\, fun-loving explorer. Her favorite subject is math and she enjoys using her abacus to solve problems about money. She loves all colors except orange and has a soft spot for pigs and goats. When she is not coming up with jokes\, you can find her practicing her parkour moves. Juniper lives in New York City with her parents. \nChi-Hoon Kim \nChi-Hoon is Juniper’s mother and an academic who holds a PhD in anthropology with a concentration in food studies. She embarked on the adventure to learn Braille and other non-visual skills when Juniper was born. Her mission is to raise awareness about accessible tools and accommodations to empower children with vision impairments. \nWhat is the 3D-Click™ abacus? \nAn abacus is an ancient calculation device used around the world. It features a frame holding an arrangement of slidable beads on rods. It is a tool that helps people visually and tactilely add\, subtract\, multiply\, and divide numbers. Just as typically sighted people use pen and paper to solve math problems\, those with vision impairments can use an adapted abacus. The multi-modal book\, Juniper and the Red Swoosh features a universally designed 3D printed abacus called the 3D-Click™. With our collaborators Mountain Lakes Public Library Makerspace and Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired\, we reimaged the abacus with access in mind to modernize and expand the reach of the abacus. The innovative “click and bump” rod design of the 3D-Click™ locks in the counting beads and provides haptic and auditory feedback. These unique features support foundational math literacy skills such as number sense\, number bonds\, and place value. \nPaint\, build\, craft\, and collage with us! Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists\, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month. MOCACREATE workshops are designed with families in mind\, but all are welcome! \nYu Rong is a painter and product designer. She was born in Sichuan and currently lives in New York City\, where she is a teaching artist at the Hope Garden Center and at MOCA. She received her BFA in Product Design and MFA in Painting at Parsons School of Design and NYSS\, but has been practicing art ever since she was a child. You can learn more about her here: www.yurong.work! \nMOCACREATE & MOCAKIDS Meet & Greets are supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts under Governor Kathy Hochul’s Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. \nGeneral Admission \n\nAdults: $10\nSeniors (over 55): $5\nStudents (with valid ID): $5\nVisitors with disabilities: $5\n\nBook online in advance to receive $2 discount for adults. \nReserve Here \nFamily Level Member Admission: FREE \nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:Charlene Kaye: Comedy and Music
DESCRIPTION:Charlene Kaye – Friday\, January 16 – 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show\n\n\nWelcome to the unhinged\, razor-sharp\, fluorescent universe of Charlene Kaye: guitar god\, internet legend and “Breakout Comedy Star” according to Rolling Stone Magazine. Known for her countless viral videos such as “Every Taylor Swift Song” (100M views and counting)\, this new show is the follow-up to “Tiger Daughter: Or\, How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame.” That show played to sold-out runs at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival\, and will soon be filmed as her first comedy special. \nWhile Tiger Daughter was a vulnerable story about Charlene’s relationship with her Chinese Tiger Mother\, this new show is a madcap musical revue about being a menace to society as a queer Asian guitar shredder. From her previous life as a folk singer-songwriter\, to shredding guitar in Darren Criss’ internet sensation Team StarKid\, to that time she started an epic feud with a restaurant by giving them a one-star review\, to starting endless gender flipped cover bands like Guns N’ Hoses and Labiahead (her all-female Guns N’ Roses and Radiohead cover bands\, respectively). You’ll be rolling in your seats\, you’ll learn a lot about how music works\, and you might even confuse her for Bobby Lee. Anything is possible! \n\n\n7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show \n$15 advance / $20 at the door GA (mixed seated / standing) \nAges 21+ \n\n\nFAQ\nAll Advance and Door tickets are Mixed Seating and Standing. Seating is limited. \nWhen you arrive\, simply check in at the door by providing the name of the ticket purchaser to claim your Will Call tickets. \nOnly Credit and Tap to Pay are accepted for ticket sales at the door. \nMost other questions answered here.

Excavating seemingly insignificant but deeply ingrained memories\, Antonym envisions the future as an escape from pain and ponders how we can possess painful memories without being beholden to them. Using field recordings of New York City to create a rich sonic landscape\, the four seasons serve as a cyclical frame and context for memory. Antonym invites audience members to reflect on their own relationships with memory\, identity\, and imagine their own futures. \nPerformers: sugar vendil/isogram: Cindy Lan (violin)\, Annie Nikunen (flute)\, Marie Lloyd Paspe\, Sugar Vendil\, Annie Wang \n“icchā / desire” by Barkha Dance Company\nicchā is a new interdisciplinary work that engages with the fierce and wild Goddess Kali to excavate female desire buried across generations. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s Uses of the Erotic\, icchā draws from traditional kathak\, contemporary choreography practice\, and anthologies collected from several aunties and sisters in barkha’s community. \nbarkha becomes the vessel that represents these women who are finding their way back to their desires they had once betrayed and explores what happens to a woman’s unspoken desires\, where do they live\, and can they be danced back into the world? \nDancer: Barkha Patel \n“Celestial Motion: Rhythms from the Silk Road and Beyond” by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company\nExperience a dynamic journey across China’s diverse cultural landscape\, from the bustling modern metropolis to the ancient tribal lands of the south and the vast northern grasslands. This showcase program celebrates tradition\, innovation\, and the enduring human spirit through four signature works. \nDancers: Madeliene Lee\, Esteban Santamaria\, Caleb Baker\, Lorenzo Guerrini\, Yuchin Kiki Tseng\, Rio Kikuchi\, Kathryn Taylor\, Madelyn Sarver\, Sarah Botero\, Candace Jarvis \nFeatured Dances: \n“Lion in the city”: This exhilarating\, highly popular work brings a modern edge to the traditional Chinese New Year celebration. Commissioned by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)\, this unique version develops a dialogue between contemporary/Chinese movement and Hip-Hop\, celebrating the pioneering spirit of the collaboration. The Lion Dance itself is a prayer for peace and harmony on earth\, symbolized by a child playing freely with a ferocious beast. \n“Peacocks under the Moonlight”: A truly elegant piece that showcases the grace and beauty of Dai ethnic dance. Hailing from the Yunnan province\, the peacock is revered as a sacred bird among the Dai people. The choreography draws inspiration from the natural movements of the peacock\, such as drinking water\, running\, and grooming its feathers\, to create a supremely graceful display. \n“Pipa Dance”: A spiritual and historical journey brought to life from the Dunhuang Grottoes\, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a treasure trove of Buddhist art. This new work is inspired by the iconic Flying Apsaras and celestial musicians depicted in the ancient murals. The choreography recreates the classical\, flowing movements of these divine figures\, with the Pipa (Chinese lute) taking center stage as a symbol of heavenly music and grace\, bridging the gap between ancient devotion and contemporary performance. \n“Mongolian Harvest (or Mongolian Festival)”: Commissioned by NJPAC\, this dynamic work captures the essence of the nomadic Mongolian way of life. The dance is renowned for its powerful steps and expressive upper body movements\, focusing on the generous spirit of the Mongolian people and their respect for the great prairie. Inspired by the joyful Naadam Festival\, the piece portrays aspects of herders’ daily activities including cooking\, hunting\, and traditions. \n\nProgram for Sun\, Jan 11 from 4:15-6:15pm: \nOpening Remarks\nAndy Chiang (Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company) and Lisa Gold (Asian American Arts Alliance) \n“Ikigai” by Naomi Funaki\nRecognized as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2024 and Asian American Arts Alliance’s 2025 Jadin Wong Fellow\, experience an in-process showing of award-winning tap dance artist Naomi Funaki’s new work. Funaki will continue creative work on Ikigai\, an evening-length piece exploring the 2011 Tohoku earthquake\, tsunami\, and Fukushima nuclear disaster. Through tap dance\, live music\, and storytelling\, the project draws inspiration from her personal experience of the event\, and that of her family and friends\, to highlight a story of resilience\, loss\, and connection. The work will offer a rhythm-driven exploration of the emotional and cultural impact of one of Japan’s most devastating tragedies. The in-process showing will bring together a diverse cast of tap dancers\, movement artists\, and vocalists. This project underscores tap as a powerful medium for storytelling and cross-cultural connection\, sparking dialogue around cultural resilience in the face of catastrophic events. \nDancers: Naomi Funaki\, Liberty Styles\, Lucas Santana\, Zakhele Grabowski\nMusicians: Ajani NaNaBuluku\, Zachary Berns \n“Alien of Extraordinary” by Sun Kim Dance Theatre\nAlien of Extraordinary is a dance theatre piece born from the labyrinthine U.S. artist visa system – a process that flattens human stories into forms and reduces lives to paperwork. Choreographed by Sun Kim\, a South Korean immigrant who specializes in the street dance style of popping\, the piece takes its name from the “alien of extraordinary ability” (O-1) visa and her own experiences with it. The piece is an invitation to witness the immigrant artist’s journey in all its fragility and resilience\, creating a meeting ground for empathy\, imagination\, and shared belonging. \nDancers: Sun Kim\, Alice Castro\, Julia Charkales\, Natasha Huang\, Anjali Kanter\, Choung Woo Hyun\, Adniel Velez\, Jordan Kaya \n“Rogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies” by Nava Dance Theatre\nRogue Gestures/Foreign Bodies is a bharatanatyam\, experimental movement\, and live music production that explores the history\, labor and lived experiences of women and immigrants in the US\, and how these fractured experiences inform our identities now. The work shows that together we are stronger\, inclusive of the nuances and contradictions that we all hold in our bodies. Initially inspired by the oral histories of Indian nurses who arrived as a result of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act\, choreographer Nadhi Thekkek\, and her collaborators find universality in the heavy and enduring work of immigrant women and the worlds they traverse between. Rogue Gestures is an ensemble work of 6 dancers with a live original score by Roopa Mahadevan\, Kalaisan Kalaichelvan\, and others. Rogue Gestures is created and produced by Nava Dance Theatre. \nDancers: Nadhi Thekkek\, Shruti Abhishek\, Lalli Venkat\, Janani Muthaiya\, Aarthi Ramesh \n“Mirage of the Spirit: Mystic Vision of the Forces in the Shadow” by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company \nThis profound and evocative cross-cultural contemporary dance showcase navigates the intricate landscapes of human experience—from the allure of fantasy to the depths of spiritual history and our primal need for connection. Through four signature works\, the program explores cycles of illusion\, inner transformation\, and the powerful forces that shape our vision of self and world. \nDancers: Dancers: Madeliene Lee\, Esteban Santamaria\, Caleb Baker\, Lornezo Guerrini\, Yuchin Kiki Tseng\, Rio Kikuchi \,Kathryn Taylor\, Madelyn Sarver\, Sarah Botero\, Candace Jarvis \nFeatured Dances: \n“Carousel”: Inspired by the dual imagery of playful\, dreamlike carousels and the majestic elegance of real horses\, this buoyant piece is one of Nai-Ni Chen’s most celebrated abstract works. It explores the flow of energy and the dynamics reminiscent of the brush strokes used in Chinese ink painting\, melding childlike wonder with the nobility and pride of equestrian movement. \n“Mirage”: A serene yet passionate work inspired by the Silk Road and the journey to the edge of the Dunhuang Caves. Influenced by the unique rhythms and movements of the Uyghur people of Xinjiang\, the dance transports the audience to a desert oasis\, evoking both tranquility and passion through movement that utilizes trance\, rhythmic breathing\, and spiral motions\, reflecting the compelling\, yet fleeting\, image of a mirage in the shifting sands. \n“Mystic Echos”: This spiritually charged work delves into the iconography of the Tibetan period murals found within the ancient Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. Drawing inspiration from the powerful images of Tantric Buddhist deities and the spiritual portraits of Tibetan monarchs and pilgrims\, the choreography translates the intricate visual language of the paintings into contemporary movement\, exploring themes of transformation\, divine protection\, and the sublime echoes of devotion. \n“Shadowforce”: Solo Created by Nai-Ni Chen during the challenging period of the global pandemic\, this beautiful and haunting solo serves as a poignant reflection on the human need for intimacy. The choreography highlights the importance of human relationship and our longing for connection and love for each other\, offering a deeply personal and resonant conclusion to the program. \nBIOS \nAbout TAKE Dance/Take Ueyama \nA native of Tokyo\, Take Ueyama moved to the United States in 1991 to study dance at The Juilliard School in New York City. For this special session\, Yadi partners with meditation teacher Michel Pascal\, whose gentle guidance and occasional live vocal elements create a serene\, multi-sensory environment. \nParticipants are invited to pause\, breathe\, and step into the program from within\, becoming part of a shared ritual of presence\, quiet observation\, and embodied awareness. \nNotes: \n\nThis session will be gently documented through photos and videos.\nImages may include wide shots of the group and close-ups of the artistic process.\nSelect images may be used by the artist for non-commercial artistic purposes.\nIf you prefer not to be photographed\, please let our team know at check-in and we will gladly accommodate.\n\nAbout Yadi Liu \nYadi Liu is a New York–based visual artist and the founder of Armat\, an artist-led initiative exploring how contemporary ritual\, perception\, and Eastern philosophy can shape shared cultural experiences. A Society of Illustrators Gold Medalist\, Liu works with fluid linework and abstraction to examine ideas of presence\, transformation\, and the unseen dimensions of human experience. \nHer live drawing practice integrates projected photography with real-time mark-making\, creating images that gradually obscure and reveal participants’ forms. Through this process\, Liu investigates the shifting boundary between the visible and the interior\, inviting audiences to witness “inner states” as evolving\, communal artworks. \nLiu’s work has been presented in public settings in New York’s Chinatown\, in experimental workshops with graduate students at FIT (SUNY)\, and in cross-disciplinary collaborations that bridge contemporary art with wellness and community engagement. Through Armat\, she continues to expand visual ritual as a participatory art form rooted in civic\, cultural\, and contemplative spaces. \nAbout Michel Pascal \nMichel Pascal is an internationally respected vocalist\, author\, and meditation teacher whose work combines contemplative practice with the immersive power of sound. For nearly a decade\, he has performed annual concerts at Carnegie Hall\, where his distinctive style\, often described as “The Medicine Voice”\, creates resonant environments for collective calm. His programs have been presented at the Rubin Museum of Art\, the NYC Mayor’s Office and other cultural and civic institutions. \nPascal trained for fifteen years in Himalayan contemplative traditions\, developing voice-based techniques centered on grounding\, visualization\, and emotional steadiness. He is the author of more than twenty books on stress reduction and mindfulness. \nHis trauma-informed programs for veterans\, first responders\, and justice-involved communities\, including collaborations with the Amity Foundation\, have been recognized for their measurable impact on stress and well-being. Across performance\, wellness\, and public settings\, Pascal’s voice functions as a stabilizing instrument for collective presence. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:Godzilla Minus One Vs. Past Lives: Romantic Histories and Historic Romances
DESCRIPTION:Love and gender roles in the recent globally successful films ‘Godzilla Minus One’ and ‘Past Lives.’\n\nProf. Jayashree Kamblé will present on her essay in CUNY FORUM Volume 11:1\, focusing on love and gender roles in the recent globally successful films Godzilla Minus One and Past Lives. Prof. Kamblé delves into how Godzilla unexpectedly challenges traditional cinematic depictions of romance and gender\, offering fresh perspectives on themes of identity and geocultural representation. Both films show how popular culture can shape our understanding of history\, belonging\, and societal dynamics. She also goes beyond the article to invite connections between the philosophy of romance in Past Lives and its Korean-Canadian-American director Celine Song’s 2025 movie\, Materialists.

SUMMARY:MOONSquare Closing Party
DESCRIPTION:It’s our last event of the year! Let’s celebrate the closing of MOONSquare exhibition with the silent auction.\n\n\nIt’s our last event of the year! Let’s celebrate the closing of MOONSquare exhibition and the winter solstice. \nOur auction will end on the evening of the closing so be sure to check out all the amazing pieces these artists have created. Winners of the auction will also be able to pick up their pieces at that time. If you can’t join us\, you can still bid on the MOONSquare auction remotely here. The proceeds will be shared between T!C and the artists\, so this is an incredible opportunity to support as well as learn more about our community!  \nTo cap off the year we will be serving tangyuan\, a sweet and warming traditional treat eaten to celebrate Dongzhi (the Winter Solstice). We’d love to see you all and wish our friends & neighbors a happy holiday before our studio goes into hibernation!
