SUMMARY:Agbayani Worship: the Problematics of a Filipino Captain America (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Vina Orden examines how narratives in popular media can perpetuate or challenge existing power structures and colonial mentalities.\nVina Orden will present on her essay in CUNY FORUM Volume 11:1\, examining how narratives in popular media can perpetuate or challenge existing power structures and colonial mentalities. Orden explores this through the complex dynamics behind the pop culture success of comics like “The United States of Captain America.” Her analysis delves into the diverse creative team behind these comics\, including queer\, Filipino\, First Nation\, and South African writers. And she critically questions whether Captain America\, despite such diverse creative input\, must still operate within a context of “imperial power dynamics” and the realities of the U.S. nation state.\n\nVina Orden is a writer based in Lenapehoking/New York City whose work has appeared in Asian Journal\, CUNY FORUM\, The FilAm\, The Halo-Halo Review\, hella pinay\, Hyperallergic\, and The Margins. As senior poetry editor at Slant’d magazine\, Vina supports and amplifies other emerging Asian American writers. She is a 2025 VONA Poetry Residency Fellow and has received fellowships from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, Kweli\, Roots. Wounds. Words.\, and Tin House. She also is working on her first novel for young adults.

SUMMARY:Author Panel: Minh Nguyen\, Memorial Park: Revisiting Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:Launch of book by Minh Nguyen\, with Catherine Quan Damman\, Kaleem Hawa\, Yasmina Price\, and Mark Tseng-Putterman\n\n\nJoin us at e-flux on Tuesday\, October 23 at 7pm for a reading and conversation with Minh Nguyen on the occasion of her new book\, Memorial Park: Revisiting Vietnam\, released by Art Metropole and Wendy’s Subway. Nguyen will read and present from the chapter of the book on art and censorship\, followed by remarks and a conversation with Catherine Quan Damman\, Kaleem Hawa\, Yasmina Price\, and Mark Tseng-Putterman. \nFifty years after the Fall of Saigon and twenty years after her family’s emigration to America\, Minh Nguyen returns to her native Vietnam to find out what’s left of the old revolutionary project. In Memorial Park\, a collection of essays pairing travelogue and criticism\, Nguyen encounters relics of proletarian romance and vestiges of authoritarian control amid an evermore corporatized society. Along the way\, she considers how contemporary artspeak confuses state censors\, the rise of luxury “Smart Cities” as they supplant socialist housing complexes\, and the enduring appeal of propaganda signs that once promised utopia. \nDriven by a diasporic curiosity that seeks discovery over dwelling on loss\, Memorial Park avoids nostalgic idealism or reflexive condemnation. Instead\, Nguyen takes seriously the legacy of Vietnamese liberation by naming what it has become—and what it has not. What emerges is a complex picture of the country today and a reflection on how we inherit and reckon with radical histories that shape our world. \nBios \nMinh Nguyen is a writer and curator based between New York City and Ho Chi Minh City. She is the curator of Dogma\, a collection and gallery in HCMC focused on art and political graphics\, and managing editor of e-flux journal. Her book Memorial Park is out with Wendy’s Subway and Art Metropole. \nCatherine Quan Damman is an art historian and critic; she holds the Valeria Napoleone Linda Nochlin Professorship at the Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University\, where she is Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary Art. Her first book\, Performance: A Deceptive History\, is forthcoming with Princeton University Press in early 2027. \nKaleem Hawa is a writer and researcher living in New York. His book on the Palestinian captives’ movement\, Like a Bag Trying to Empty\, was published by Wendy’s Subway last year. \nYasmina Price is a New York–based writer and film programmer completing a PhD at Yale University. She is devoted to visual culture from the African continent and diaspora\, anti-colonial cinema\, and the experimental practices of women artists. Her programming has been featured at Anthology Film Archives\, Light Industry\, Maysles Documentary Center\, e-flux\, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Pan African Film & Arts Festival\, Los Angeles; and The National Gallery of Art\, D.C. Her writing has appeared in edited volumes and museum catalogues\, with essays in The Nation\, The Baffler\, MUBI’s Notebook\, Hammer & Hope\, Criterion’s Current\, Film Quarterly and World Records Journal. \nMark Tseng-Putterman is a writer\, historian\, and educator based in New York City. His work focuses on how US empire has shaped the politics of Asian American belonging during the unfinished Cold War. His manuscript-in-progress\, Cold War Diaspora\, draws on several years of archival research and oral histories to trace how Chinese\, Filipino\, and Japanese American communities navigated the colliding projects of racial inclusion and diasporic nationalism during the 1950s–1980s. His writing has appeared in publications such as The Atlantic\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, and Boston Review. He is co-editor of a new collection on contemporary Asian American grassroots activism\, Asian America Rising\, published in September by New York University Press\, and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. \nFor more information\, please contact program@e-flux.com. \nAccessibility\n–Two flights of stairs lead up to the building’s front entrance at 172 Classon Avenue.\n–For elevator access\, please RSVP to program@e-flux.com. SUMMARY:MOCA Queer StoryJAM #5 – In-Between
DESCRIPTION:This storytelling program fosters understanding and builds connections across communities by amplifying the voices of queer Asian Americans.\n\n\nWe live at the intersection. We are Asian and American. To friends\, we may be out; to family\, perhaps not. In-betweenness is where the tug-of-war lives—between identities\, expectations\, and choices. But must we choose? \nMOCA Queer StoryJAM returns for another heartfelt gathering. This storytelling program fosters understanding and builds connections across communities by amplifying the voices of queer Asian Americans. This time\, we’re exploring IN-BETWEEN—the daily push and pull of navigating multiple identities. Presented in conjunction with MOCA’s special exhibition hapa.me\, the program also invites deeper reflection on mixed-race identity. \nThrough personal narratives\, LGBTQ+ Asian American storytellers will offer nuanced perspectives on intersectionality and belonging. Afterward\, audience members are invited to share their own stories. Join us for an evening of storytelling\, reflection\, and connection.

SUMMARY:Disciples of the Pear Garden: NYC Cantonese Opera Histories 梨園兒女：紐約之粵劇歷史
DESCRIPTION:Step behind the scenes into the roots of Cantonese opera in America…\n\n\nCantonese opera has been part of New York’s story for more than 170 years. Beginning in the 1850s\, touring troupes performed in Chinatowns across the United States from San Francisco to Chicago\, New York\, and even Spokane (plus smaller cities in between). In 1853\, the 40-member Tong Hook Tong opera company appeared at New York’s Niblo’s Garden\, one of Manhattan’s grand theaters. By 1890\, Chinatown’s Doyers Street had its own dedicated opera house\, founded by cultural activist Wong Chin Foo. These performances helped build community through music\, theater\, and tradition that continues to resonate today. \nThis special evening brings that legacy to life: \n\nDr. Nancy Yunhwa Rao shares highlights from her acclaimed new book Inside Chinese Theater: Community and Artistry in 19th Century California and Beyond.\nCelebrated theater artist Ping Chong and his sister Betty Chong share stories of their family’s arrival in the 1930s as members of a Cantonese opera troupe from Canada and performing in New York.\nCantonese opera performer Mee Mee Chin shows vintage costumes from her collection and performs some classic opera songs.\n\nCopies of Dr. Rao’s book will be available for purchase and signing. \nTea and typical Chinese opera snacks will be served. \n* Pear Garden was China’s first royal performing arts academy dating to the Tang Dynasty. Today the phrase ‘Pear Garden’ is used to refer to Chinese opera in general and performers are commonly known as ‘Children/Disciples of the Pear Garden’ \nNancy Yunhwa Rao 饒韻華 is a Distinguished Professor of Music at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Her book\, Inside Chinese Theater: Community and Artistry in 19th Century California and Beyond (Illinois University Press\, 2025)\, tells the story of iconic theater companies and the networks and migrations that made Chinese opera a part of North American cultures. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, Nancy Yunhwa Rao has produced award-winning research on a range of topics\, including gender and music\, sketch studies\, music modernism\, cultural fusion in music\, racial representations\, and the music history of early Chinese Americans. Rao’s earlier book\, Chinatown Opera Theater in North America (Illinois University Press\, 2017)\, received the Music in American Culture Award\, American Musicological Society; Lowens Book Award\, Society for American Music; and Book Award in Performance and Media\, Associations for Asian American Studies. In 2024\, Rao was named Honor Member of the American Musicological Society. \n  \nPing Chong 張家平 iis an internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary artist. Since 1972\, he created over 100 original works for the stage with the Ping Chong Company (now Pink Fang) in New York City\, and around the world. He is the recipient of two BESSIE awards\, two OBIE awards\, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award\, a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship\, and the 2014 National Medal of Arts. Ping grew up in Manhattan Chinatown where he\, sister Betty Chong and their siblings all worked in the family’s two local restaurants and cafe. And\, according to Ping\, “My mom was a diva. My grandfather was a very famous Chinese opera director-librettist. My father was a director-librettist. My mother was performing in Vietnam in the late ’20s\, and my father was directing in Singapore and Malaysia in the ’20s.” \nMeeMee Chin 陳美美 began her Cantonese Opera journey in 2004 as a way to support the oldest Opera Club in Chinatown\, Manchee Benevolent Association. At first it was something for her to fill her Saturdays but it soon became a deep passion as she found her voice. \nThis event is part of the Chinatown Arts Festival\, a month long celebration of culture in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Showcasing both traditional Chinese arts groups and emerging Asian American artists\, this year’s festival is packed with exciting programs for all ages. Check out our long list of free and low-cost events at www.thinkchinatown.org/artsfest \nThink!Chinatown is a place-based intergenerational non-profit in Manhattan’s Chinatown\, working at the intersection of storytelling\, arts\, and neighborhood engagement. SUMMARY:Documentary Film: Because of You: A History of Kilawin Kolektibo
DESCRIPTION:The remarkable story of queer Filipnxs who\, in the 1990s\, against a racist\, lesbophobic backdrop\, came together for the first time in NYC.\n\n\nBecause of You: A History of Kilawin Kolektibo (Dahil Sa ‘Yo: Ang Storya Ng Kilawin Kolektibo) traces the history of Kilawin Kolektibo\, a pioneering collective of Filipnxs who came together in NYC in the mid-nineties. Having experienced marginalization in Filipino culture because of their queerness and in mainstream gay culture because of their race\, language\, and gender\, the members of the group sought political empowerment and increased visibility. But above all\, they sought to create a space of friendship and safety for those who found themselves suspended between cultures and identities. Above all\, they sought to create a space of friendship and safety for those who found themselves suspended between cultures and identities. Kilawin Kolektibo allowed them to transform their experience of oppression into one of joy and growth. Kilawin made lasting connections with similar groups in the global Filipinx diaspora\, most significantly\, with Babaylan\, a queer Filipinx group based in Toronto. \nCulling from a treasure trove of over a quarter century’s worth of historic documentation that includes footage\, photographs\, interviews and ephemera\, the film tells the inspiring story of members as they found each other\, fell in love\, and became each other’s lifeblood amidst a society that rejected them. From marching\, partying\, and protesting\, to its oftentimes incestuous sexual politics\, the film serves as an exhilarating memorial to the rebellion and nostalgia of the nineties. \nJoin us during LGBTQ History month\, as we screen this film and hear from the directors and participants of Kilawin Kolektibo\, at the City College of NY\, Shepard Hall Rm 291 at 259 Convent Avenue at 140th street at 6 pm. ASL and CART provided. Free\, light refreshments served. ID needed to enter the building. #1 to 137th St\, ABCD to 145th street. Accessible route: #6 to 125th Street\, then M101 to 140th Street. \nPresented by Third World Newsreel and the Documentary Forum at CCNY and cosponsored by AAARI (Asian American/Asian Research Institute CUNY) and the CCNY LGBTQ+ Student Center. \n\n\n\nDesireena Almoradie (she/they) PRODUCER\, DIRECTOR\, CAMERA\, EDITOR emigrated from Manila\, Philippines at the age of eleven\, settling in the borough of Queens\, New York with her family. She graduated from NYU with a BFA in Film and a Master’s degree at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). Her works explore collective history with a focus on queer and/or BIPOC lives. Barbara adopts an adventurous approach to travel\, exploring the connections that shape our understanding of home\, identity\, and the passage of time\, while also navigating the beautiful complexities of memory. \nAs a key member of Kilawin Kolektibo\, a vibrant Pinay lesbian collective\, active in the 90s\, Barbara spent crucial years in NYC honing their filmmaking skills by capturing the heartbeat of the collective’s actions—from marches and protests to joyous celebrations. Their passion led them to co-found and serve as an associate producer for Lesbian Central\, the groundbreaking world’s first Lesbian TV talk show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network\, a Public Access Television project sponsored by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. SUMMARY:Reclaiming the “Monster” to Challenge Power: What the Horror Genre Reveals About Power\, Bias\, and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive and timely Halloween-season session\, actress\, writer\, and comedian Kausar Mohammed (THE FLASH\, JURASSIC WORLD: CHAOS THEORY\, MONSTER HIGH\, APPENDAGE) takes us inside the horror genre as both fan and creator. Drawing from her own work and collaborations with diverse horror storytellers\, Kausar unpacks how fear on screen reflects the fears of society\, and how those fears are too often weaponized against marginalized communities. Together\, we’ll explore who gets cast as the “monster” in media and why\, examine how these narratives ripple into policy\, culture\, and everyday bias\, and use creative writing to reimagine and reclaim our own monsters. With humor\, insight\, and a dash of the macabre\, Kausar invites us to flip the script\, confront what haunts us\, and turn “horror” into a tool for empathy\, resistance\, and change.

SUMMARY:Chinatown Modern Dance Legacies: Hsueh Tung Chen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate HT Chen’s legacy in modern dance & Chinatown with Dian Dong\, plus a “Needle and Thread” performance excerpt.\n\n\nJoin us for an evening reflecting on the life and legacy of choreographer H.T. Chen\, a cultural pillar of New York’s Chinatown\, whose work bridged Asian traditions and American modern dance. Born in Shanghai\, raised in Taiwan\, and trained at Juilliard and NYU\, Chen came to New York in the 1970s and founded HT Chen & Dancers. He went on to create a professional dance company\, school\, and theater at 70 Mulberry Street\, making the Chen Dance Center a vital artistic hub in Chinatown for more than forty years. \nIn recognition of his contributions to the city’s cultural life\, he received the NYC Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture and NYS Governor’s Arts Award. Chen also served as a board member of organizations including the Asian American Arts Alliance and CREATE in Chinatown/Think!Chinatown\, helping to strengthen the role of the arts in community life. \nAt this intimate gathering\, his artistic and life partner Dian Dong will share memories\, rare video footage and images of Chen’s career and discuss his lasting influence. The program includes a live mini-performance by Chen & Dancers of “Needle and Thread” offering a glimpse of how his legacy continues to inspire. \nTogether\, we’ll honor a trailblazing choreographer\, educator\, and cultural leader—and look ahead to the exciting plans for rebuilding the new Chen Dance Center after it was destroyed by fire in 2020 at its historic Chinatown home. \nHT Chen & Dancers Since its inception in 1978\, the multicultural company has received critical acclaim for its national and international tours\, extended residencies in communities throughout the U.S.\, New York performances\, and award-winning educational programming. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Gish Jen with Weike Wang: Bad Bad Girl (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed novelist mines her own family history for an intimate story of mothers\, daughters\, and the wounds that echo across generations. \n \nGish Jen’s latest novel\, Bad Bad Girl\, began as a memoir of her late mother\, Loo Shu-hsin\, before evolving into a fictionalized portrait of their turbulent mother-daughter relationship. As a child Shu-hsin learns how little her life is valued as a woman in 1930s Shanghai and is constantly reprimanded\, “Bad bad girl! You don’t know how to talk!” Years later\, struggling to keep her own family together as an expat in America\, she finds herself incanting the same refrain to her own strong-willed\, outspoken daughter. Spanning continents\, generations\, and cultures\, Bad Bad Girl weaves fragments of memory with careful invention to create an intimate portrait of the complex bonds between mothers and daughters. \nGish Jen discusses her new book with author Weike Wang.

DESCRIPTION:An evening of ear seeding\, soundbath\, herbal teas and concoctions\, a talk about traditional Chinese medicine practices in the Autumn season.\n\n\nAs autumn approaches\, we pause to reflect and restore.
