SUMMARY:Author Talk: Gish Jen with Weike Wang: Bad Bad Girl (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed novelist mines her own family history for an intimate story of mothers\, daughters\, and the wounds that echo across generations. \n \nGish Jen’s latest novel\, Bad Bad Girl\, began as a memoir of her late mother\, Loo Shu-hsin\, before evolving into a fictionalized portrait of their turbulent mother-daughter relationship. As a child Shu-hsin learns how little her life is valued as a woman in 1930s Shanghai and is constantly reprimanded\, “Bad bad girl! You don’t know how to talk!” Years later\, struggling to keep her own family together as an expat in America\, she finds herself incanting the same refrain to her own strong-willed\, outspoken daughter. Spanning continents\, generations\, and cultures\, Bad Bad Girl weaves fragments of memory with careful invention to create an intimate portrait of the complex bonds between mothers and daughters. \nGish Jen discusses her new book with author Weike Wang.

SUMMARY:YY Dance Company: Elsewhere (World Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:Yue Yin returns to 92NY with the world premiere of Elsewhere\, the final chapter in a trilogy exploring the meaning of our existence\, the journey of identity\, and our deep connection with the universe. Blending Chinese classical and folk dance with contemporary forms and the layered influences of the immigrant experience\, the choreography is both fluid and fierce\, deeply expressive and technically sharp. \nThe main themes of Yue Yin’s work are demonstrations of sensibility and strength\, emotional experiences\, conflicts\, and connections in all their complexity. Her presence in Women Move the World\, 92NY’s 2025/26 Harkness Mainstage Series — a season devoted to work created and choreographed entirely by women — reminds us that when women move\, they move more than bodies — they move ideas\, forms\, and the world itself. \nYue Yin’s connection to 92NY runs deep. A former Harkness Artist in Residence Mainstage artist\, Harkness faculty member and DEL facilitator\, she created work here during the pandemic and has continued to grow as a visionary choreographer and educator. With Elsewhere\, she returns to a place that helped shape her path — and shares a powerful new work that reflects how far that path has taken her. \nOct 17 at 7 pm\nOct 18 at 2 pm\nOct 18 at 7pm \nPlease note: At the artists’ request\, there will be no late seating at this event.

This unprecedented joint exhibition between the Katonah Museum of Art and The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund illuminates the full scope of the artist’s trailblazing practice\, offering rare access to Shen Wei’s paintings\, works on paper\, choreographic compositions\, short films\, and video highlights from the Shen Wei Dance Arts repertoire—including new pieces never before exhibited in the United States. \nShen Wei’s visual art transcends cultural and geographic boundaries\, capturing the body in motion with dynamic brushwork that seamlessly incorporates Chinese calligraphy\, allusions to post-World War II abstract movements such as Action Painting and Gutai\, and traditional Chinese shan shui (mountain-water) painting. The resulting works evoke both abstraction and visionary landscapes\, often monumental in scale and cinematic in quality\, compelling the viewer’s gaze to move and dance across the surface. \nAt The Pocantico Center\, the exhibition emphasizes Shen Wei’s dialogue with nature through his recent landscape paintings\, whose immersive scale invites sustained contemplation. \nAt the Katonah Museum of Art\, the presentation highlights the interdisciplinary nature of his oeuvre—the generative influence of music on his choreography\, and the central role of movement in his paintings. Together\, these two venues offer audiences a complete experience of Shen Wei’s multidisciplinary vision.

SUMMARY:Nikkitha Bakshani Presents Ghost Chilli\, in Conversation with Kat Tang
DESCRIPTION:Nikkitha Bakshani celebrates the US release of her novel Ghost Chilli with Kat Tang at The Crown Inn. Hosted by Fleet with cosponsor AAWW.\n\n\nJoin us for a celebration of the US release of Ghost Chilli\, Nikkitha Bakshani’s acclaimed debut novel\, the recipient of a Cosmopolitan Book Award and a finalist for the 2025 New Adult Book Prize. Nikkitha will be in conversation with novelist Kat Tang (Five-Star Stranger). Hosted by Fleet\, an imprint of Little\, Brown Book Group\, and cosponsored by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, the event will include readings\, discussion\, mingling\, and drink specials. Admission is free. \nMore about Ghost Chilli: \nMuskan has a great life: a creative job in the big city\, supportive friends\, and no trouble finding first dates. So what if her colleagues don’t know she exists\, or her friends won’t stop lecturing her about the three-year ‘situationship’ she’s in? It’s not like she’s starving. \nBut something is wrong\, and while the people around her seem to have all the right words\, nobody can articulate what they want from each other. As obstacles mount and the easy-going persona Muskan has built starts to crumble\, she is forced to face a question that’s been quietly burning at the back of her mind: Why did her family move to America so abruptly? \nWarm\, funny\, and sharply observed\, Ghost Chilli is a story about trying to find honest relationships in an isolating world\, and the weight we unwittingly carry. \n‘A rich coming-of-age story full of punchy and astute observations about everyday relationships‘ COSMPOLITAN \n‘By turns witty\, compassionate\, and toe-curling. An incredibly astute and propulsive writing of modern relationships\, familial\, platonic and romantic‘ SUSANNAH DICKEY \n‘Ghost Chilli is enjoyably bittersweet\, a black comedy that conjures the turbulent twenties in all their isolation and shame‘ TELEGRAPH \n‘A kaleidoscopically detailed novel of twenty-first century life\, full of human comedy\, which finds richness in the quotidian\, ephemeral\, and overlooked’ LUCIE ELVEN \n‘Exquisite\, forensic and tender . . . This book gently brûléed my heart‘ DOREEN CUNNINGHAM \nNikkitha Bakshani is an Indian-American writer based in London and the author of the debut novel Ghost Chilli\, which has been shortlisted for the 2025 New Adult Book Prize. Her writing has been published in the Telegraph\, the Paris Review Daily\, The Baffler\, the Village Voice\, and more. She has an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths. \nKat Tang is a graduate of Columbia’s MFA program where she taught as an Undergraduate Writing Fellow. Born in China\, relocated to Japan\, and raised in California\, she is fascinated by how we make and fake human connection in a technologically evolving world. Her short stories and graphic narratives have appeared in Electric Literature\, The Margins\, Pigeon Pages\, and elsewhere. She currently lives in New York.

SUMMARY:Dance: Of Dishes and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Of Dishes and Dreams is a new evening-length creation choreographed by Spring 2024 Baryshnikov Arts residency artist Keerati Jinakunwiphat. Inspired by her experiences growing up in a family-run Thai restaurant\, Jinakunwiphat explores service\, synergy\, and the balance between order and chaos. Set to an original score by Quaba Ernest and Bryndon Cook\, the piece evokes the energetic pulse of kitchens and home-cooked meals. The evening’s visual landscape will be designed by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya\, incorporating traditional textiles\, sculpture\, and domestic objects. Together\, the dancers transform an everyday space into a sphere of healing and belonging\, driven by themes of lineage\, community\, and the American Dream. \n“It’s rare for a young artist to emerge so quickly with a distinctive choreographic voice\, but Keerati has that confidence\, vision\, and originality.
