SUMMARY:Wing on Wo Presents: Rising Lotus a Collection by Michelle Wen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen on Friday\, October 3rd // 6-8pm.\n\n\nWing on Wo is thrilled to present ‘Rising Lotus\,’ a collection of imaginative ceramic jars by artist Michelle Wen. Inspired by her childhood visits to Chinatown\, Michelle creates a collection that not only breathes new life into the shop’s apothecary history but also uses the jar as a vessel to transport us to an otherworldly landscape of a lotus garden. This collection and its meticulously crafted ink painting and sculptural details are a love letter to Michelle’s family\, honoring her grandfather’s stories of a heavenly landscape of unfathomable beauty\, her father’s legacy of Chinese ink painting\, and Michelle’s mom and grandmother’s matriarchal power that continue to fuel her to keep expanding her practice. We are so thrilled to be sharing this work at W.O.W. as part of our ongoing Centennial programming <3 Join us for the opening on Friday\, October 3 from 6-8pm! \nABOUT MICHELLE WEN \n@michelle_wen_artist \nMichelle Wen is a ceramic artist and instructor born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, and received her BFA from Pratt Institute. An important aspect of Michelle’s practice is community engagement\, as she has been teaching arts and ceramics at a non-profit in Bed-Stuy for eight years. Michelle also continues to hold fundraisers to support humanitarian\, environmental\, and social justice causes by raffling off her ceramics. Michelle is honored to be showing her work at Wing on Wo\, as Chinatown still plays a significant role in her life and remains a place of gathering and sentimental value for her family. \nMichelle’s work has been featured in Vanity Fair and Pottery Making Illustrated. She has collaborated with the Brooklyn Nets\, the YES Network\, Asian Women Giving Circle\, and CUNY TV. Featured exhibitions include The Brooklyn Museum\, the Montclair Art Museum\, and the iidrr Gallery in Chinatown.

Lan Thao Lam is an incisive response to a modernist classic and an affecting exploration of the poetics and politics of our times. \nIn her 1933 The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas\, Gertrude Stein invented a new literary form by narrating her own story from the perspective of her partner\, blurring the lines between portrait and self-portrait. Almost a century later\, experimental filmmaker and artist Lana Lin has resurrected Stein’s project to tell a different story of queer love\, life\, and artistic collaboration. \nAt heart a candid chronicle of her partner Lan Thao’s life journey from Việt Nam during the war\, and her own troubled history as a gender-queer Taiwanese American\, Lin draws in subjects as varied as photography\, cancer\, tropical fruit\, 9/11\, and Eve Sedgwick’s eyeglasses\, weaving an intimate landscape of living that is also a critical investigation of race and gender. \nLana Lin is a writer\, artist\, and filmmaker based in New York and Connecticut. She is the author of the book Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects: Fractured Subjectivity in the Face of Cancer and film and video works including The Cancer Journals Revisited. Her various works and collaborative projects (with Lan Thao Lam as “Lin + Lam”) have exhibited at festivals and art and educational spaces throughout the world\, including the Museum of Modern Art\, Whitney Museum\, and New Museum\, New York; The National Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.; Gasworks\, London; the Taiwan International Documentary Festival and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute\, New Taipei City; Arko Art Center\, Korean Arts Council\, Seoul; and the 2018 Busan Biennale. Having had three years of psychoanalytic training before dropping out\, she sometimes still dreams of becoming a psychoanalyst one day. \nBorn in Saigon\, South Vietnam\, Monique Truong came to the U.S. as a refugee in 1975. She’s a novelist\, essayist\, children’s book author\, and librettist. Her novels are The Sweetest Fruits (Viking\, 2019)\, Bitter in the Mouth (Random House\, 2010)\, and the national bestseller The Book of Salt (Houghton Mifflin\, 2003)\, with German translations published by C.H. Beck. Her children’s picture book Mai’s Áo Dài (Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books\, 2025) is co-written with Thai Nguyen and illustrated by Dung Ho. A graduate of Yale College and Columbia Law School\, she’s received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Hodder Fellowship\, American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Rosenthal Family Foundation Award\, Young Lions Fiction Award\, Bard Fiction Prize\, and John Dos Passos Prize for Literature\, among other honors.

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS – Rock Springs Chinatown and the 1885 Chinese Massacre
DESCRIPTION:Discover daily life in Rock Springs Chinatown before and after the 1885 Chinese Massacre in this archaeological talk.\n\n\n$10 General Admission | $5 Student and Senior Admission | Free for MOCA Members \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) invites you to an insightful presentation with Laura W. Ng\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Grinnell College and a historical archaeologist specializing in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Chinese migrants and their transpacific lives. \nRailroad work and coal mining brought Chinese laborers to rural southwestern Wyoming starting in the 1870s. The Rock Springs Chinatown was constructed by the Union Pacific Coal Company as part of a racialized landscape intended to segregate Asian immigrant coal miners. At the same time\, Chinese laborers were scapegoated for white unemployment\, which culminated in the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Newspapers emphasized that Chinese laborers were foreigners because they were “heathens” and sent remittances to China. Within this context\, a fight broke out between white and Chinese coal miners in Mine #6 and white miners led a mob that brutally attacked Chinatown and its residents. The mob burned most of the Chinatown structures down and at least 28 Chinese were murdered. \nDrawing on the burn layer from the massacre as a time marker\, and in collaboration with Chinese American descendants\, Professor Ng will discuss how archaeological excavations provide tangible insight into silenced histories of Chinese immigrant labor\, transpacific migration\, and racial exclusion. \nAbout Laura W. Ng \nLaura W. Ng is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Grinnell College in Iowa. She is a historical archaeologist who researches late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Chinese migrants and their transpacific lives. Laura is currently investigating archaeologies of racism and transnationalism at the Evanston and Rock Springs Chinatowns in rural Southwestern Wyoming in collaboration with Dr. Dudley Gardner and Chinese American descendants. She received her PhD in Anthropology from Stanford University. \n\n\n\nNot a MOCA member yet? SUMMARY:Performance Art: Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves featuring Li-Ming Hu and Charmaine Poh.
DESCRIPTION:An evening of performances featuring Li-Ming Hu and Charmaine Poh.\n\n\nThe Goethe-Institut New York is pleased to present an evening of performances featuring Li-Ming Hu (b. 1987 in New Zealand\, lives in New York City) and Charmaine Poh (b. 1990 in Singapore\, lives in Berlin). These performances are held in conjunction with the exhibition\, Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves\, at the Goethe-Institut New York on view from September 24 to December 4\, 2025. \nPROGRAM \nLi-Ming HuCan It Be I’m Not Meant To Play This Part? (2024)\, performance\, video\, 30 min.Combining narration\, reenactment\, found footage\, karaoke\, animation and a sprinkling of augmented reality\, Li-Ming Hu’s Can It Be I’m Not Meant To Play This Part? explores representation\, identity and cultural production through the artist’s experiences as a professional actor and emerging artist\, in conversation with key moments in the history of Asian American theater.Works cited (in order of appearance): \n\nTrailer for the 2020 film Mulan\, directed by Niki Caro\n“Reflection\,” performed by Lea Salonga\, from Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan (Wilder and Zippel).\nInterview with Lea Salonga\, Jonathan Pryce and Terry Wogan\, BBC\, 1989.\nPhotos of 1990 Miss Saigon protests by Corky Lee\nFinal scene of M Butterfly by David Henry Hwang\, directed by David Cronenberg\, starring Jeremy Irons. Music “Everything is Destroyed” by Howard Shore and a Casiotone cover of “Un Bel Di Vedremo” by Puccini (from his opera Madame Butterfly)\n\nCharmaine Pohin the shadow of the cosmic (2023)\, performance-lecture\, video\, 30 min.in the shadow of the cosmic is a performance-lecture exploring the multiplicity of the avatar. Expanding Poh’s YOUNG BODY series\, the character E-Ching is placed in conversation with vocal clones\, anime characters\, 3D influencers\, and other entities in a vast digital constellation. The performance-lecture traces a technological lineage from the East Asian economic miracle of the 1980s and ’90s and the emergence of techno-orientalism\, positing that the digital image of the East Asian femme body was borne at a confluence of these historical flows. Pertinent to the work is the recursive logic of Daoism\, in which image\, self and cosmology reverberate in endless loops. Combining video\, live performance and sound\, in the shadow of the cosmic is a call to re-open questions of being and becoming. \n\nMotion graphics: Jawn Chan\nAudio generation: Jawn Chan\, Ashley Hi\n3D animation: Brandon Tay\nMovement artists: Robyn Wong Min Xuan and Kay Yoon\nMusic (the track\, Mutualism): Anise\n\nLi-Ming Hu & Charmaine PohSomewhere In Between Asian and British (2025)\, performance\, 15 min. This collaborative performance takes the Singaporean accent as a point of departure. Poh\, Singapore-born\, and Hu\, whose mother is Singaporean\, explore topics ranging from typecasting and codeswitching to post-colonial politics and diasporic experiences.Somewhere In Between Asian and British is commissioned by the Goethe-Institut New York for the exhibition Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves.

SUMMARY:The Original: A Chinese Bohemian in the Village\, Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:H T Tsiang with actress Joanna Moore in a 1960s TV program \nThe Original is an immersive walking tour through Greenwich Village with Michael Salgarolo following the strange\, hilarious life of Chinese American author H T Tsiang. Alternatively ignored and ridiculed in his own time\, Tsiang is now known as a visionary forebearer of modern Asian American literature. His two major novels\, The Hanging on Union Square (1935) and And China Has Hands (1937) challenged mainstream representations of Chinese Americans and presented a deeply unhinged satire of the American Dream. The Original explores how the cafeterias\, hand laundries\, and radical arts scene of the Depression-era West Village inspired Tsiang’s writing and made him an “original.”

Through intimate performances blending storytelling\, music\, and dance\, the cast shares their poignant first encounters with the United States and the bittersweet reality of leaving their homelands behind. \nThese personal narratives illuminate the courage\, resilience\, and complexities of building a new life far from where their roots began. Echoes of Arrival offers a heartfelt glimpse into the immigrant experience\, honoring those whose journeys are woven into the ever-evolving legacy of New York City. \nEchoes of Arrival is an excerpt from MOCA’s oral history street performance project\, Catching Silhouettes\, an immersive production inviting audiences into Chinatown to experience stories brought to life through dance\, music\, and narrative.

SUMMARY:Public Walking Tour- Chinatown: A Walk through History
DESCRIPTION:Join a MOCA educator for a neighborhood walking tour of Chinatown past and present! \nUncover the history of one of New York City’s oldest and most culturally diverse neighborhoods! This walking tour explores how both everyday buildings and places of historical significance reflect and shape a community. Together\, trace the transformation of the area from its origins as the Native American Lenape village of Werpoes Hill to the vibrant Chinatown it is today. Highlighted sites include the oldest streets in Chinatown\, a bustling neighborhood park and a Catholic church with layered histories\, Chinatown’s oldest general store\, and a Chinese eatery that catered to the needs of Chinatown’s turn-of-the-century “bachelor society.” \nWalking tours leave promptly from the main lobby at 215 Centre Street\, NY\, NY 10013. They are best for children ages 12 and up. Tickets include admission to the museum before and/or after your tour. \nTickets: $25/adult\, $15/adult 65 & up\, $15/student (with valid ID)\, free for children under 5. MyMOCA Members receive one free walking tour per year.
