SUMMARY:Performance Art: Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves featuring Li-Ming Hu and Charmaine Poh.
DESCRIPTION:An evening of performances featuring Li-Ming Hu and Charmaine Poh.\n\n\nThe Goethe-Institut New York is pleased to present an evening of performances featuring Li-Ming Hu (b. 1987 in New Zealand\, lives in New York City) and Charmaine Poh (b. 1990 in Singapore\, lives in Berlin). These performances are held in conjunction with the exhibition\, Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves\, at the Goethe-Institut New York on view from September 24 to December 4\, 2025. \nPROGRAM \nLi-Ming HuCan It Be I’m Not Meant To Play This Part? (2024)\, performance\, video\, 30 min.Combining narration\, reenactment\, found footage\, karaoke\, animation and a sprinkling of augmented reality\, Li-Ming Hu’s Can It Be I’m Not Meant To Play This Part? explores representation\, identity and cultural production through the artist’s experiences as a professional actor and emerging artist\, in conversation with key moments in the history of Asian American theater.Works cited (in order of appearance): \n\nTrailer for the 2020 film Mulan\, directed by Niki Caro\n“Reflection\,” performed by Lea Salonga\, from Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan (Wilder and Zippel).\nInterview with Lea Salonga\, Jonathan Pryce and Terry Wogan\, BBC\, 1989.\nPhotos of 1990 Miss Saigon protests by Corky Lee\nFinal scene of M Butterfly by David Henry Hwang\, directed by David Cronenberg\, starring Jeremy Irons. Music “Everything is Destroyed” by Howard Shore and a Casiotone cover of “Un Bel Di Vedremo” by Puccini (from his opera Madame Butterfly)\n\nCharmaine Pohin the shadow of the cosmic (2023)\, performance-lecture\, video\, 30 min.in the shadow of the cosmic is a performance-lecture exploring the multiplicity of the avatar. Expanding Poh’s YOUNG BODY series\, the character E-Ching is placed in conversation with vocal clones\, anime characters\, 3D influencers\, and other entities in a vast digital constellation. The performance-lecture traces a technological lineage from the East Asian economic miracle of the 1980s and ’90s and the emergence of techno-orientalism\, positing that the digital image of the East Asian femme body was borne at a confluence of these historical flows. Pertinent to the work is the recursive logic of Daoism\, in which image\, self and cosmology reverberate in endless loops. Combining video\, live performance and sound\, in the shadow of the cosmic is a call to re-open questions of being and becoming. \n\nMotion graphics: Jawn Chan\nAudio generation: Jawn Chan\, Ashley Hi\n3D animation: Brandon Tay\nMovement artists: Robyn Wong Min Xuan and Kay Yoon\nMusic (the track\, Mutualism): Anise\n\nLi-Ming Hu & Charmaine PohSomewhere In Between Asian and British (2025)\, performance\, 15 min. This collaborative performance takes the Singaporean accent as a point of departure. Poh\, Singapore-born\, and Hu\, whose mother is Singaporean\, explore topics ranging from typecasting and codeswitching to post-colonial politics and diasporic experiences.Somewhere In Between Asian and British is commissioned by the Goethe-Institut New York for the exhibition Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves.

SUMMARY:The Original: A Chinese Bohemian in the Village\, Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:H T Tsiang with actress Joanna Moore in a 1960s TV program \nThe Original is an immersive walking tour through Greenwich Village with Michael Salgarolo following the strange\, hilarious life of Chinese American author H T Tsiang. Alternatively ignored and ridiculed in his own time\, Tsiang is now known as a visionary forebearer of modern Asian American literature. His two major novels\, The Hanging on Union Square (1935) and And China Has Hands (1937) challenged mainstream representations of Chinese Americans and presented a deeply unhinged satire of the American Dream. The Original explores how the cafeterias\, hand laundries\, and radical arts scene of the Depression-era West Village inspired Tsiang’s writing and made him an “original.”

SUMMARY:Author Talk: In Celebration of Where Are You Really From - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s Where Are You Really From\, featuring Delia Cai!\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a celebration of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s Where Are You Really From\, featuring Delia Cai! \n__ \nA mail order bride from Taiwan is packed up in a cardboard box and sent via express shipping to California\, where her much older husband awaits her. Two teenage girls meticulously plan how to kill and cook their downstairs neighbor. An American au pair moves to Paris to find herself\, only to find her actual French doppelgänger. A father reunites with his estranged daughter in unusual circumstances: as a background actor on the set of her film. A writer’s affair with a married artist tests the line between fact and fiction\, self-victimization and the victimization of others. \nIn these six singular stories and a novella that pivot from the terrible to the beautiful to the surreal\, Elaine Hsieh Chou confronts the slipperiness of truth in storytelling. With razor-sharp precision and psychological acuity\, she peels back the tales we tell ourselves to peer beneath them: at our treacherous desires\, our self-deceptions and our capacity for cruelty\, both to ourselves and each other. Expansive and provocative\, Where Are You Really From is a visionary achievement. \n__ \nElaine Hsieh Chou is a Taiwanese American author and screenwriter from California. Described as “the funniest\, most poignant novel of the year” by Vogue\, her debut novel Disorientation was a New York Times Editors’ Choice Book\, New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award finalist and Thurber Prize finalist. A former Rona Jaffe Graduate Fellow at New York University\, her Pushcart Award–winning short fiction appears in Guernica\, Black Warrior Review\, Tin House Online\, Ploughshares and The Atlantic\, while her essays appear in The Cut and Vanity Fair. She is a Fred R. Brown Literary Award recipient\, a Sundance Episodic Lab Fellow and a Gotham Series Creator to Watch. Her work has been supported by the Harry Ransom Center\, the New York Foundation for the Arts and Hedgebrook’s Writers-in-Residence Program. \nDelia Cai is a writer and editor based in New York. She writes the culture newsletter\, Deez Links. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nThis event will be streamed on Zoom Webinar. SUMMARY:Art Exhibit Opening: Talkin’ Bout a Revolution: Pyaari Azaadi
DESCRIPTION:Talkin’ Bout a Revolution: Pyaari Azaadi\nSeptember 25th – December 13th\, 2025 \nTalkin’ Bout a Revolution is a solo exhibition spotlighting the work of Pyaari Azaadi\, formerly known as Jaishri Abichandani. Taking its title from Tracy Chapman’s iconic 1988 song\, the exhibition reflects Azaadi’s lifelong commitment to art\, activism\, and community. Known for her fearless approach to materials and form\, Azaadi is an acclaimed painter and sculptor who continually embraces a multidisciplinary practice that challenges dominant narratives and centers feminist and decolonial perspectives. \nIn this exhibit\, Azaadi’s work explores and celebrates feminist\, queer\, racialized\, and en-casted bodies\, specifically through the lens of South Asian identity and with social justice playing a key role. This groundbreaking exhibit\, Talkin’ Bout a Revolution\, is an opportunity to amplify the bold voices of anti-caste activists and South Asian feminists. A special set of paintings also feature Dalit\, Bahujan\, and Adivasi leaders. \nThis exhibit is so meaningful to our communities because it challenges dominant narratives in South Asia by centering feminist\, decolonial\, debrahminised perspectives. Azaadi seamlessly intertwines her art with activism as well as BIPOC/feminist/queer/DBA identities\, and\, now more than ever\, we need to see this type of representation. \nA fully illustrated exhibition catalogue will accompany the show\, featuring essays by prominent voices offering a range of perspectives on Azaadi’s work and its impact across disciplines including: lawrence-minh bùi davis\, (curator of Asian Pacific American Studies at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center)\, Yashica Dutt (is a leading anti-caste expert\, journalist and the award-winning author of the non-fiction memoir Coming Out as Dalit)\, Mona Eltahawy\, (an award-winning writer focusing on Arab and Muslim issues and global feminism whose works have appeared in various publications including The Washington Post\, The New York Times)\, Carmen Hermo (Lorraine and Alan Bressler Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston)\, Pamela Sneed\, (poet\, performer\, visual artist\, and educator)\, Hrag Vartanian (arts writer\, curator\, and editor-in-chief and co-founder of Hyperallergic)\, and Anuradha Vikram (writer\, curator\, and educator. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Immigration Detention Inc.: Deirdre Colon and Nancy Hiemstra in conversation with Gregory Donovan
DESCRIPTION:The trio of scholars will discuss “Immigration Detention Inc.: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants” — the new book authored by Dr. Conlon and Dr. Hiemstra. \nNancy Hiemstra and a panel of scholars discuss her new co-authored book (with Deirdre Conlon)\, a damning exposé of the ways immigration detention generates income while those detained are starved\, sickened\, and exploited\, and how that profit making is driving the explosive growth of the U.S. detention system today. \nThe United States has the most extensive immigration detention system in the world\, expanding from a capacity of less than 5\,000 detainees per day in the 1980s to 52\,000 by 2019\, and even higher today. While the most vociferous anti-immigrant rhetoric may be attributed to Republicans\, US detention infrastructure has grown exponentially regardless of the political party in power as reports of abysmal detention conditions pile up. \nNancy Hiemstra is Associate Professor of Women’s\, Gender\, & Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook. A political geographer whose research focuses on US immigration enforcement policies\, she is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, author of Detain and Deport: The Chaotic U.S. Immigration Enforcement Regime\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention. \nDeirdre Conlon is Associate Professor of Geography based at the University of Leeds. A critical geographer working in the US and Britain\, her work focuses on how immigration and border controls are proliferating as they are monetized. She is co-author of Immigration Detention Inc: The Big Business of Locking Up Migrants\, and co-editor of Intimate Economies of Immigration Detention and Carceral Spaces: Mobility and Agency in Imprisonment and Migrant Detention.

This workshop also shows how Black American and APIDA histories are interconnected. Students will learn about cross-cultural solidarity. \nThis workshop is free for educators and will take place virtually. It will be facilitated by Laura Ouk.
