SUMMARY:The Shed Exhibition Walkthrough of Open Call: Portals
DESCRIPTION:Civil Art is pleased to invite you to a guided tour of the Open Call: Portals exhibition at The Shed\, led by Dejá Belardo\, Assistant Curator\, Civic Programs and Visual Art. \nThe exhibition walkthrough will delve into the process of curating these emerging artists’ installation-based works and their social\, political\, and ecological relevance to the world we live in. \nIMPORTANT: Make sure to cross-register for a free ticket to the exhibition on The Shed’s website. You must do this in order to access the walkthrough.https://at.theshed.org/program/447-open-call-portals \nItinerary: \n2:30 – 2:40 PM | Guests arrive\n2:40 – 3:30 PM | Exhibition Walkthrough \nAbout Civil Art \nCivil Art empowers the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community by making the contributions of the API creatives accessible to wider demographics through our educational programming\, editorial platform\, community gatherings\, and other events. Civil Art’s public programming highlights the ways in which the contributions of API creatives communicate cultural narratives\, including employing themes that speak to the multiplicity of the API community’s identity. Our programming raises awareness of the community’s diverse histories while fostering opportunities for intra-community connection\, understanding\, and further creative development. \nAbout Open Call: Portals \nTwelve early-career\, NYC-based artists and collectives present new works that harness personal stories and ancestral global history to open portals for passage\, transformation\, and resistance. Ranging from painting and film to sculpture and performance\, their works explore forces shaping our world: colonialism\, migration\, and environmental crisis. \nTogether these artists forge profound connections between the past and present\, memory and material\, and displacement and belonging to create Open Call: Portals. Artists featured in the exhibition were selected as part of Open Call\, a commissioning program for early-career\, NYC-based artists redefining what it means to make art.

SUMMARY:Summer Open House organized with Small Editions - Artist books and ziness
DESCRIPTION:Join us with Small Editions\, lucky risograph\, Superbloom*\, and Calipso Press to learn more about artist books and zines!\n\n\nAAAinA is thrilled to announce our summer open house collaboration with Small Editions. This event will feature short presentations by the following independent presses: Small Editions\, lucky risograph\, Superbloom*\, and Calipso Press. Each of the selected independent presses approaches publishing at varying scales and utilizes a variety of print and production methods to realize their projects. Please join us to learn more about these exciting artist books and zine makers and engage with their recently published materials. \nFood is first come\, first served\, and features vegan ice cream by @ijsmaaker! RSVPs are required. Doors will open at 4pm with presentations from 5-6pm. \nParticipant bios: \nSmall Editions is a graphic design studio\, print consultant\, and artist book publisher led by Hannah Yukiko Pierce and Isobel Chiang. Our studio also hosts educational events and workshops on print and publishing-related topics throughout the year. \nOur work aims to center the book as a form of art\, rather than a vehicle for art. Projects begin from a thoughtful engagement with source content\, and are informed by our ongoing research and experimentation in print\, materiality\, and fabrication. \nSmall Editions’ books are held in publicly accessible collections at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Museum of Modern Art\, The Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Brooklyn Museum\, The Walker Art Center\, Harvard University\, Yale University\, RISD\, and MICA\, among others. \nSuperblooom* (stylized with three o’s and an asterisk) is a Vietnamese multimedia collective of Vietnamese-Americans helping to foster a dialogue on the Vietnamese/Asian diaspora and the Global South through photography\, text\, mixed media\, and design. Through this collective\, we are cutting through the media\, the noise\, the lies\, the myths\, and adding to the conversation of Southeast Asian artistry. We are here to connect\, create\, and inspire a superblooom. \nCalipso Press is a risograph studio\, publishing platform\, and artistic collective founded by Eva Parra and Camilo Otero. Established in 2015 in Cali\, Colombia and currently based between Cali and New York\, Calipso explores publishing as a site for research\, collaboration\, and critical imagination. \nCalipso’s practice centers on the book as a space for experimentation and conversation\, treating printed matter not only as a format but as a methodology. From 2015 to 2022\, Calipso hosted a residency program dedicated to expanded publishing and print-based inquiry\, welcoming artists\, writers\, and researchers to develop projects that blur the boundaries between disciplines\, formats\, and geographies. \nCalipso Press has participated in international art book fairs including the New York Art Book Fair\, UNFOLD Shanghai\, Libros Mutantes Madrid\, and Rrreplica México\, and has curated contemporary art and publishing projects such as Post-Digital Mimeography (Colombia Biennial\, 2016)\, No Room for Books (Brazil\, 2017)\, and soft revolution (Madrid\, 2014). \nLucky Risograph is an Asian and Hispanic-owned print press and design studio based in DUMBO\, Brooklyn. Since our establishment in 2019\, we have continued incorporating the eco-conscious\, accessible\,and affordable nature of risograph printing into our everyday practice. \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nAAAinA’s general programming and operations are funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, the Vilcek Foundation\, and other foundations and individuals.

SUMMARY:MOCA CINEMA - Dancing Home 跳進部落的孩子
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Home is a heartfelt documentary tracing the artistic journey of world-renowned Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava.\n\n\nDancing Home is a heartfelt documentary tracing the artistic journey of world-renowned Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava\, a member of one of Taiwan’s Indigenous tribes\, whose work is deeply rooted in nature and indigenous heritage. Presented by the Museum of Chinese in America\, the film follows Bulareyaung’s return to his hometown in Taitung\, Taiwan\, where he found renewal at a time of personal and professional uncertainty. \nA graduate of Taipei National University of the Arts and former dancer with the legendary Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, Bulareyaung later received an Asian Cultural Council fellowship to study in New York in 1998. He went on to choreograph for internationally acclaimed companies\, including the Martha Graham Dance Company. \nIn 2015\, supported by the Luo Manfei Dance Grant\, he founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company—offering a space for indigenous youth\, many without formal training\, to explore contemporary dance. Dancing Home captures their shared journey of self-discovery\, as these young performers reconnect with their roots and\, in doing so\, help Bulareyaung reconnect with his own. \nThe screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Bulareyaung\, focusing on his artistic experiences in New York and his lifelong commitment to uplifting Indigenous communities through dance. \n*This 90-minute documentary is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles. \nThis program is supported by Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York. \n \nABOUT Bulareyaung Pagarlava\nBorn in the Jialan Village in Taitung\, Taiwan\, Paiwan choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava’s name means “happy warrior.” \nHe dreamed of becoming a dancer at the age of 12\, choreographed his first piece while studying at Taipei National University of the Arts\, and later joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, performing solo works on tours around the world. In 1998\, he received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council to study in New York. His choreography has been featured by esteemed companies such as the Martha Graham Dance Company in the U.S.\, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre\, and Cloud Gate 2 in Taiwan. He has also been invited to perform at prestigious international venues\, including the Vancouver Winter Olympics Arts Festival\, the Vail International Dance Festival in the U.S.\, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. His works have been praised internationally for their “wild originality\, humor\, sensuality\, and surprise—making modern dance irresistible.” \nIn 2010\, while taking a curtain call hand-in-hand with the Martha Graham dancers at Lincoln Center\, Bulareyaung thought to himself\, “How wonderful it would be to be holding hands with my own people.” That wish became a mission. In 2015\, he returned to his hometown in Taitung and founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company (B.D.C.). Drawing from the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities and rooted in a landscape between mountains and sea\, B.D.C. empowers local youth who love to dance. Through the exploration of voice and movement\, the company develops a unique vocabulary of indigenous contemporary dance.

SUMMARY:Asian American Psychological Association Convention in Denver\, CO
DESCRIPTION:In Resistance\, We Find Liberation. In Community\, We Find Joy.\nIt’s hard to find joy in the midst of activism and resistance\, and yet our movements depend on holding onto joy – together. Resistance is not just about struggle; it is also about healing\, connection\, and the radical act of embracing joy. Our organization seeks to uplift both resistance and joy\, honoring the ways they sustain each other in our collective work. This year’s theme\, “In Resistance\, We Find Liberation. In Community\, We Find Joy\,” brings together our shared commitments to activist scholarship\, collective healing\, and community empowerment. It invites us to explore the ways that joy fuels our resistance\, sustains our activism and scholarship\, and strengthens our communities. As we engage in a long-term struggle against oppression\, we must also create spaces for celebration\, renewal\, and hope. This theme highlights our presidential mission of embracing the full spectrum of our experiences\, recognizing that joy is not merely a byproduct of liberation but an essential part of the process itself. \nWe invite our community of psychologists\, researchers\, scholars\, practitioners\, community workers\, healers\, elders\, and students to share their expertise\, scholarship\, and journeys in navigating these interwoven forces. We document so much pain\, yet joy remains an underexplored and radical force in our work. This convention is an invitation to remember joy\, to reclaim it\, and to embrace it as an integral part of our resistance. As the saying goes… \nIf you want to run fast\, run alone. If you want to run far\, run together. \n

SUMMARY:Climate: Premal Shah and Kinari Webb: Small Dollar\, Big Impact - Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:The climate doesn’t care where emissions cuts come from; what matters is that the world transitions to renewable energy quickly and cheaply. If it’s significantly cheaper to install solar panels in India than on a rooftop in California\, then isn’t that where they should be built? \nIn 2005\, Premal Shah co-founded Kiva.org\, a global anti-poverty effort that has loaned more than $2 billion for low-income entrepreneurs in 80 countries. He recently applied a similar microfinance model to climate\, creating renewables.org\, with the goal of leveraging small amounts of money for the greatest impact. \nKinari Webb saw a similar opportunity in rain forest communities around the world. Currently\, less than 1 percent of climate finance goes to these communities\, yet transferring funds directly to the local people with the greatest stake in preserving their land can have outsized impact. \nWhere does the climate dollar go furthest? Join Climate One’s Greg Dalton for an illuminating and encouraging conversation with Premal Shah and Kinari Webb.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Betty Yu’s Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Please join Magnum Foundation on Thursday\, July 24th\, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM for an artist talk and conversation celebrating the launch of Betty Yu’s new art and photography book\, Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience. \nCo-hosted by Magnum Foundation and Daylight Books\, the evening will begin with a short reading by Betty Yu\, the artist will then be joined by Rochelle Kwan for a conversation about the uncovering of family roots and the intergenerational memory work. The evening will end with a Q&A and book signing. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFamily Amnesia is a visual tribute and love letter honoring my Chinese American family roots in the U.S. The art book explores my family’s multi-generational resilience and resistance through mixed media collages\, my grandfather’s photographs\, my own captured images and archival material. The book project honors the past and current lives of Asian Americans and immigrants in the U.S. by examining the incalculable and traumatic impact that historical events like the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act continue to have on the Asian American experience. This is a painful part of our American history. I am reclaiming that narrative through my own personal family’s story. The book will feature my grandfather’s role as a founding member of the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance of NY\, my mother’s plight as a garment worker who became a labor organizer\, and my sister’s legacy as a community activist. I know my family story is not unique. It is part of the larger collective Asian-American immigration experience.\n– Betty Yu \n[Buzz #13 at the door] \nMagnum Foundation is in an elevator building and has a restroom that is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral. Delving into texts such as “Anne of Green Gables\,” “Possession\,” “A Tale for the Time Being\,” and “The Last Samurai\,” Chihaya interrogates her cultural identity\, her relationship with depression\, and the intoxicating\, sometimes painful ways books push back on those who love them. \nMeet the author and join the discussion on Microsoft Teams: https://queenslib.org/45Rs

SUMMARY:BFF Night w/ Katie Yee: Maggie; or\, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night celebrating books and besties at Melissa Joy Manning Jewelry! \nJoin us for an evening celebrating books and besties with Katie Yee. Get a signed book\, sip a margarita\, buy some bling! The first 30 people who buy a book bundle ticket will receive a FREE pair of Melissa Joy Manning Hug Earrings! \nProse Hoes subscribers receive 25% off of forever bracelets. \nA Chinese American woman spins tragedy into comedy when her life falls apart in a taut\, wry debut novel that grapples with grief\, motherhood\, and myths—perfect for fans of Joan Is Okay and Crying in H Mart. \nA man and a woman walk into a restaurant. The woman expects a lovely night filled with endless plates of samosas. Instead\, she finds out her husband is having an affair with a woman named Maggie. \nA short while after\, her chest starts to ache. She walks into an examination room\, where she finds out the pain in her breast isn’t just heartbreak—it’s cancer. She decides to call the tumor Maggie. \nUnfolding in fragments over the course of the ensuing months\, Maggie; Or\, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar follows the narrator as she embarks on a journey of grief\, healing\, and reclamation. She starts talking to Maggie (the tumor)\, getting acquainted with her body’s new inhabitant. She overgenerously creates a “Guide to My Husband: A User’s Manual” for Maggie (the other woman)\, hoping to ease the process of discovering her ex-husband’s whims and quirks. She turns her children’s bedtime stories into retellings of Chinese folklore passed down by her own mother\, in an attempt to make them fall in love with their shared culture—and to maybe save herself in the process. \nIn the style of Jenny Offill and the tradition of Nora Ephron’s hilarious and devastating writing on heartbreak and womanhood\, Maggie is a master class in transforming personal tragedy into a form of defiant comedy. \nKatie Yee is a writer from Brooklyn. She has received fellowships from the Center for Fiction\, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, and Kundiman. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books\, No Tokens\, The Believer\, the Washington Square Review\, Triangle House\, Epiphany\, and Literary Hub. By day\, she works at the Brooklyn Museum. By night\, she writes\, usually under the watch of her judgmental rescue dog\, Ollie.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of Marginlands
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Marginlands by Arati Kumar-Rao!\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a celebration of Marginlands by Arati-Kumar Rao! \nAs a child growing up in Mumbai\, Arati Kumar-Rao’s parents instilled in her an abiding love for the natural world and a passion for storytelling. Years later\, adrift in a corporate job and concerned by the unbridled development of her country\, she asked herself\, “When will you stop doing what you can do and start doing what you really want to do?” \nAnimated by an instinctive sense that our fate is bound to that of the earth and the more-than-human world\, Kumar-Rao sets out on a journey across India\, listening along the way to stories the land and its people share with her. In the Thar Desert\, often reduced to the value of extractable commodities\, she learns about ancient methods of harvesting rainwater from shepherds with deep ancestral memories. In the delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges\, Brahmaputra\, and Meghna Rivers at the Bay of Bengal\, she walks ancient shorelines and mangrove forests with a marine biologist\, exploring tidepools and learning of the extent to which this astonishingly diverse ecology is increasingly endangered by commercial trawlers and overfishing. And on India’s northernmost plateau\, surrounded by the Himalaya and home to snow leopards\, ibex\, and numerous endangered species of eagles and owls\, she finds glaciers disappearing at an alarming rate and meets with inhabitants who play little role in creating climate change but now bear the brunt of it. \nRichly illustrated with the author’s photographs and drawings\, Marginlands is a vibrant and compelling account of the changes reshaping India today. Engaging and urgent\, infused with wonder and profound empathy\, this is a work of love and hope\, inspiring readers across the world to preserve and protect the world around us. \n__ \nArati Kumar-Rao is a National Geographic Explorer\, an independent environmental photographer\, a writer\, and an artist. Her work has appeared in National Geographic\, Emergence\, BBC\, and in leading Indian publications. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other.
