SUMMARY:Book Launch: Betty Yu’s Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Please join Magnum Foundation on Thursday\, July 24th\, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM for an artist talk and conversation celebrating the launch of Betty Yu’s new art and photography book\, Family Amnesia: Chinese American Resilience. \nCo-hosted by Magnum Foundation and Daylight Books\, the evening will begin with a short reading by Betty Yu\, the artist will then be joined by Rochelle Kwan for a conversation about the uncovering of family roots and the intergenerational memory work. The evening will end with a Q&A and book signing. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFamily Amnesia is a visual tribute and love letter honoring my Chinese American family roots in the U.S. The art book explores my family’s multi-generational resilience and resistance through mixed media collages\, my grandfather’s photographs\, my own captured images and archival material. The book project honors the past and current lives of Asian Americans and immigrants in the U.S. by examining the incalculable and traumatic impact that historical events like the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act continue to have on the Asian American experience. This is a painful part of our American history. I am reclaiming that narrative through my own personal family’s story. The book will feature my grandfather’s role as a founding member of the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance of NY\, my mother’s plight as a garment worker who became a labor organizer\, and my sister’s legacy as a community activist. I know my family story is not unique. It is part of the larger collective Asian-American immigration experience.\n– Betty Yu \n[Buzz #13 at the door] \nMagnum Foundation is in an elevator building and has a restroom that is wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral. For access requests or questions\, please contact events@magnumfoundation.org.

SUMMARY:Literary Thursdays: Sarah Chihaya\, Author of “Bibliophobia”
DESCRIPTION:Sarah had always lived through her books\, seeking escape\, self-definition\, and rules for living. She built her life around reading\, wrote criticism\, and taught literature at an Ivy League university. Then\, she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown\, and the world became an unreadable blank page. \nSarah Chihaya’s memoir “Bibliophobia” is a searing and darkly humorous story of breakdown and survival told through books. Delving into texts such as “Anne of Green Gables\,” “Possession\,” “A Tale for the Time Being\,” and “The Last Samurai\,” Chihaya interrogates her cultural identity\, her relationship with depression\, and the intoxicating\, sometimes painful ways books push back on those who love them. \nMeet the author and join the discussion on Microsoft Teams: https://queenslib.org/45Rs

SUMMARY:BFF Night w/ Katie Yee: Maggie; or\, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night celebrating books and besties at Melissa Joy Manning Jewelry! \nJoin us for an evening celebrating books and besties with Katie Yee. Get a signed book\, sip a margarita\, buy some bling! The first 30 people who buy a book bundle ticket will receive a FREE pair of Melissa Joy Manning Hug Earrings! \nProse Hoes subscribers receive 25% off of forever bracelets. \nA Chinese American woman spins tragedy into comedy when her life falls apart in a taut\, wry debut novel that grapples with grief\, motherhood\, and myths—perfect for fans of Joan Is Okay and Crying in H Mart. \nA man and a woman walk into a restaurant. The woman expects a lovely night filled with endless plates of samosas. Instead\, she finds out her husband is having an affair with a woman named Maggie. \nA short while after\, her chest starts to ache. She walks into an examination room\, where she finds out the pain in her breast isn’t just heartbreak—it’s cancer. She decides to call the tumor Maggie. \nUnfolding in fragments over the course of the ensuing months\, Maggie; Or\, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar follows the narrator as she embarks on a journey of grief\, healing\, and reclamation. She starts talking to Maggie (the tumor)\, getting acquainted with her body’s new inhabitant. She overgenerously creates a “Guide to My Husband: A User’s Manual” for Maggie (the other woman)\, hoping to ease the process of discovering her ex-husband’s whims and quirks. She turns her children’s bedtime stories into retellings of Chinese folklore passed down by her own mother\, in an attempt to make them fall in love with their shared culture—and to maybe save herself in the process. \nIn the style of Jenny Offill and the tradition of Nora Ephron’s hilarious and devastating writing on heartbreak and womanhood\, Maggie is a master class in transforming personal tragedy into a form of defiant comedy. \nKatie Yee is a writer from Brooklyn. She has received fellowships from the Center for Fiction\, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, and Kundiman. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books\, No Tokens\, The Believer\, the Washington Square Review\, Triangle House\, Epiphany\, and Literary Hub. By day\, she works at the Brooklyn Museum. By night\, she writes\, usually under the watch of her judgmental rescue dog\, Ollie.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of Marginlands
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Marginlands by Arati Kumar-Rao!\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a celebration of Marginlands by Arati-Kumar Rao! \nAs a child growing up in Mumbai\, Arati Kumar-Rao’s parents instilled in her an abiding love for the natural world and a passion for storytelling. Years later\, adrift in a corporate job and concerned by the unbridled development of her country\, she asked herself\, “When will you stop doing what you can do and start doing what you really want to do?” \nAnimated by an instinctive sense that our fate is bound to that of the earth and the more-than-human world\, Kumar-Rao sets out on a journey across India\, listening along the way to stories the land and its people share with her. In the Thar Desert\, often reduced to the value of extractable commodities\, she learns about ancient methods of harvesting rainwater from shepherds with deep ancestral memories. In the delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges\, Brahmaputra\, and Meghna Rivers at the Bay of Bengal\, she walks ancient shorelines and mangrove forests with a marine biologist\, exploring tidepools and learning of the extent to which this astonishingly diverse ecology is increasingly endangered by commercial trawlers and overfishing. And on India’s northernmost plateau\, surrounded by the Himalaya and home to snow leopards\, ibex\, and numerous endangered species of eagles and owls\, she finds glaciers disappearing at an alarming rate and meets with inhabitants who play little role in creating climate change but now bear the brunt of it. \nRichly illustrated with the author’s photographs and drawings\, Marginlands is a vibrant and compelling account of the changes reshaping India today. Engaging and urgent\, infused with wonder and profound empathy\, this is a work of love and hope\, inspiring readers across the world to preserve and protect the world around us. \n__ \nArati Kumar-Rao is a National Geographic Explorer\, an independent environmental photographer\, a writer\, and an artist. Her work has appeared in National Geographic\, Emergence\, BBC\, and in leading Indian publications. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. SUMMARY:We’re Not White: Discussing MENA Visibility in NYC
DESCRIPTION:When Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) communities are erased in data\, we’re erased in real life too. \n\nIt means we don’t get funding for our schools or language support for our families.\nIt means our health data is inaccurate and our communities are misdiagnosed.\nIt means our stories are overlooked in media\, politics\, and research.\nIt means we’re hyper-visible when we’re targeted but invisible when we need help.\n\nThis Thursday July 17\, we’re gathering at Qahwah House in Astoria to name what’s happening and reclaim our visibility. \nMENA communities are erased in state data and forced into the “white” category on the Census. This erasure has real\, daily impacts. It leaves our cultures misunderstood\, health needs unmet\, languages unsupported\, and our kids grow up without seeing themselves reflected. Our stories remain untold\, struggles hidden\, and our communities denied the chance to be fully seen\, heard\, and valued. \nJoin us for a conversation led by North African creatives\, including Aymann Ismail and Zina Louhaichy\, where we’ll share stories and explore why visibility matters\, building understanding within our community. \nThe night will open with a poetry performance and continue with a fireside chat on the MENA experience in NYC\, from the Census to the streets. \nYou’ll hear from: \nMuna Faiz Abdelwahab\, a Sudanese poet and humanitarian whose poetry opens up space for our complex\, beautiful identities \nZina Louhaichy\, a Moroccan Italian actress and designer challenging narrow Western views of North Africa through fashion and film \nAymann Ismail\, a journalist\, storyteller and the author of ‘Becoming Baba’ whose work exposes the cracks in American systems and uplifts MENA voices across media and culture \nMohamed Attia\, a former street vendor with over a decade of organizing experience and now leads the Street Vendor Project\, championing the rights of immigrant and working class communities \nMona Elboghdadi\, Malikah’s own Immigrant Program Director building grassroots safety and resistance with North African immigrant women \nWe’ll close with a community activity that invites you to share your stories and your vision for what true representation could look like. \nThis night is more than a conversation. It’s a chance to gather in our truths\, to challenge systems that erase us\, and to build power through connection over coffee. \nWe hope you’ll be there!

SUMMARY:In-Store: Joseph Lee: Nothing More of This Land w/ Leslie Jamison

Today\, as tourists flock to the idyllic beaches\, the island has become increasingly unaffordable for tribal members\, with nearly three-quarters now living off-island. Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag\, journalist Joseph Lee grappled with what this situation meant for his tribe\, how the community can continue to grow\, and more broadly\, what it means to be Indigenous. \nIn Nothing More of This Land\, Lee weaves his own story and that of his family into a panoramic narrative of Indigenous life around the world. He takes us from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the icy Alaskan tundra\, the smoky forests of Northern California to the halls of the United Nations\, and beyond. Along the way he meets activists fighting to protect their land\, families clashing with their own tribal leaders\, and communities working to reclaim tradition. \nTogether\, these stories reject stereotypes to show the diversity of Indigenous people today and chart a way past the stubborn legacy of colonialism. \n  \nJoseph Lee is an Aquinnah Wampanoag writer based in New York City. He has an MFA from Columbia University and teaches creative writing at Mercy University. His writing has been published in The Guardian\, BuzzFeed News\, Vox\, Electric Literature\, High Country News\, and more. He was a Margins Fellow at the Asian American Writers Workshop and a Senior Indigenous Affairs Fellow at Grist. He has won multiple awards from the Indigenous Journalists Association for environmental coverage\, health coverage\, and beat reporting and this book was awarded a 2024 Silvers Grant for Work in Progress. Follow him on X at @JosephVLee and on Instagram at @Joseph.V.Lee. \nLeslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters\, The Recovering\, and The Empathy Exams; the collection of essays Make It Scream\, Make It Burn\, a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award; and the novel The Gin Closet\, a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. She writes regularly for The New Yorker and her work has appeared in many places including The New York Times\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, and the New York Review of Books.
