SUMMARY:Author Talk: In Celebration of Outside Women
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of Roohi Choudhry’s Outside Women\, featuring Mona Eltahawy and Yashica Dutt\n\n\nJoin AAWW for a powerful celebration of Roohi Choudhry’s incandescent debut novel Outside Women\, a sweeping\, century-spanning story of feminist resistance\, radical kinship\, and migrant solidarity. \nChoudhry will be joined by Mona Eltahawy (The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls) and Yashica Dutt (Coming Out as Dalit) for an evening of readings and conversation on building transnational feminist community and writing toward justice. Together\, these three writers—whose work has shaped movements across borders—will reflect on the themes of Outside Women: finding courage in sisterhood\, defying silence across generations\, and the revolutionary possibilities of standing together. \n__ \nSet in South Africa\, Pakistan\, and New York City\, Outside Women weaves together the lives of Sita\, an indentured laborer in 1890s Durban\, and Hajra\, a Pakistani scholar in exile a century later\, each forced to reckon with the cost of fighting for a stranger. Lyrical\, gripping\, and deeply tender\, Outside Women is “riveting… an incisive story of how change happens” (Publishers Weekly) and a radiant exploration of what it means to risk everything for liberation. \nDon’t miss this urgent and electric evening with three of the boldest feminist voices writing today. \n__ \nRoohi Choudhry was born in Pakistan and grew up in southern Africa. She holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan and is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship and residencies at Hedgebrook and Djerassi. She worked as a researcher in criminal justice reform and public health\, wrote for the United Nations\, and facilitates creative writing workshops for interfaith groups\, schools\, libraries\, and community organizations. Her stories and essays have appeared in Ploughshares\, Callaloo\, Longreads\, and the Kenyon Review. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.\nFind out more at roohichoudhry.com. \nMona Eltahawy is a feminist author\, commentator and disruptor of patriarchy. Her latest book is an anthology on menopause she has edited called Bloody Hell! And Other Stories: Adventures in Menopause from Around the World. Her first book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (2015) targeted patriarchy in the Middle East and North Africa and her second The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls (2019) took her disruption worldwide. Her commentary has appeared in media around the world and she is founder and editor-in-chief of the newsletter FEMINIST GIANT. \nYashica Dutt is the award-winning author of Coming Out as Dalit\, an internationally acclaimed journalist and among the leading global voices on caste. Dutt’s work has been published in the New York Times\, Foreign Policy and The Atlantic\, and she has been featured on the BBC\, The Guardian and PBS Newshour. Her writing has been part of Pen America’s India at 75 anthology that featured prominent Indian writers looking back on India’s history in its 75th year of independence\, and a collection titled Our Freedoms: Essays and Stories from India’s Best Writers. Coming Out as Dalit was published in the South Asian subcontinent in 2019\, and a revised and the updated edition was released by Beacon Press in 2024. It is an enduring best-seller and is currently part of the curriculum in over 50 colleges and universities worldwide\, including Harvard University\, UC Berkeley\, and UC Davis. Dutt is currently working on her second book on caste in the United States\, also commissioned by Beacon Press. She graduated from Columbia Journalism School \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. \nWe highly encourage all in person guests to take a COVID test at home prior to the event.

SUMMARY:NEA Big Read: Interior Chinatown Discussion and Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore themes in Interior Chinatown and begin your own scripted story inspired by the novel.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) presents its 2024-25 NEA Big Read initiative\, featuring Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu\, a National Book Award winner. \nThis April\, join us for an engaging book discussion and writing workshop led by educator Alice Fung. This interactive program will explore literary appreciation and feature a dynamic writing activity inspired by the novel. Participants will discuss themes of family history\, the immigrant experience\, and storytelling as a means of addressing real-world challenges. All attendees will receive a FREE copy of Interior Chinatown. This event is open to all\, and no prior writing experience is required. \nCentered around the theme Where We Live\, MOCA has been hosting a series of free\, multidisciplinary public programs including talks and community events with artists\, performers\, and scholars. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. \nAbout Interior Chinatown \nWillis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son\, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day\, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant\, where Black and White\, a procedural cop show\, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here\, too\, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it? \nAfter stumbling into the spotlight\, Willis finds himself launched into a wider world than he’s ever known\, discovering not only the secret history of Chinatown\, but the buried legacy of his own family. Infinitely inventive and deeply personal\, exploring the themes of pop culture\, assimilation\, and immigration—Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu’s most moving\, daring\, and masterful novel yet. \nAbout Charles Yu \nCharles Yu is the author of four books\, including his latest\, Interior Chinatown\, which won the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction\, was shortlisted for the Le Prix Médicis étranger\, and longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. He has received the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Award\, been nominated for two Writers Guild of America awards for his work on the HBO series Westworld\, and has also written for shows on FX\, AMC\, Facebook Watch\, and Adult Swim. His fiction and non-fiction have appeared in a number of publications including the New Yorker\, the New York Times magazine\, the Atlantic\, Wired\, Time and Ploughshares.

SUMMARY:More Than a Meal: Celebrating Korean Food and Community
DESCRIPTION:This panel features moderator and freelance journalist Hannah Bae\, Chef Jae Jung\, and food writer James Park as they dive into the history of Korean food and its impact on New York. The Koreatown neighborhood has humble origins dating back to the 1980s and now dominates 32nd Street in midtown from 6th Avenue all the way to Madison Avenue. This neighborhood has served as the cultural epicenter for Korean culture to spread throughout New York. As much as Korean culture has affected New York\, New York culture has done the same in kind. This can be seen in how Korean food has been popularized in NYC. This panel will explore the impacts of these collaborating cultures\, and the ways they are different\, unique\, complimentary\, and contradictory.

SUMMARY:Propaganda\, Communication and Empire: Western Intervention in Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:Propaganda\, Communication and Empire: Western Intervention in Afghanistan (Routledge\, 2025) interrogates the mediatized politics of western intervention in Afghanistan\, to gain a deeper understanding of the occupation within the broader transition toward a multipolar global order. \nAccurate histories of western interventions and regional realities are often obscured or even eclipsed in the accounts of western mainstream media\, which\, if anything\, tend to rue the withdrawals and lionize the suffering of returning troops. This volume investigates the state’s role in the dark underbelly of the shortsighted interventionist media narrative\, as well as the dehumanizing portrayals of people living in the Afghanistan–Pakistan region. \nChapter themes: \n\nCritically evaluates the narrative of the Global War on Terror\, as well as the wars launched after 9/11 that destabilized the Middle East.\nContextualize developments in Afghanistan with a historical framework that will problematize linear narratives that are mobilized in support of interventions.\nRe-present specific aspects of the geopolitical and humanitarian consequencea that have eluded mainstream media workers\, including journalists and Hollywood moviemakers.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Vicky Nguyen with Tracey Nguyen Mang: Boat Baby—A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:NBC News anchor and correspondent Vicky Nguyen joins us for a conversation about Boat Baby\, her new memoir that tells the story of her family’s daring escape from communist Vietnam and her unlikely journey from refugee to reporter\, with Tracey Nguyen Mang of podcast and non-profit Vietnamese Boat People. \nStarting in 1975\, Vietnam’s “boat people”—desperate families seeking freedom—fled the Communist government and violence in their country any way they could\, usually by boat across the South China Sea. Vicky Nguyen and her family were among them. Attacked at sea by pirates before reaching a refugee camp in Malaysia\, Vicky’s family survived on rations and waited months until they were sponsored to go to America. \nBut deciding to leave and start a new life in a new country is half the story…figuring out how to be American is the other. Boat Baby is Vicky’s memoir of growing up in America with unconventional Vietnamese parents who didn’t always know how to bridge the cultural gaps. It’s a childhood filled with misadventures and misunderstandings\, from almost stabbing the neighborhood racist with a butter knife to getting caught stealing Cosmo in the hope of learning Do You Really Think You Know Everything About Sex? \nVicky’s parents approached life with the attitude\, “Why not us?” In the face of prejudice\, they taught her to be gritty and resilient\, skills Vicky used as she combatted stereotyping throughout her career\, fending off the question “Aren’t you Connie Chung?” to become a leading Asian American journalist on television. She delivers a uniquely transparent account of her life\, revealing how she negotiated her salary in a competitive industry\, the challenges of starting a family\, and the struggle to be a dutiful daughter. \nFunny\, nostalgic\, and poignant\, Boat Baby is a testament to the messy glue that bonds a family. In the tradition of We Are Dreamers by Simu Liu and Dear Girls by Ali Wong\, Vicky Nguyen offers an optimistic story full of heart that illuminates the promise of what America can be. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nVicky Nguyen is an NBC News senior consumer investigative correspondent and anchor of NBC News Daily. She reports for The Today Show\, Nightly News with Lester Holt and NBC News Now. She graduated as valedictorian from the University of San Francisco. Vicky lives in New York with her husband and three daughters. Her parents are always nearby. \nTracey Nguyen Mang is the founder of Vietnamese Boat People (vietnameseboatpeople.org)\, a podcast and nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of the Vietnamese diaspora through innovative storytelling programs. She was born in Vietnam and came to the U.S. in 1981 as a refugee with her family. Tracey has over twenty-five years of strategy and corporate social responsibility experience and is currently in real estate with West of Hudson Real Estate.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Unassimilable by Bianca Mabute-Louie with Dr. Dale Dagar Maglalang
DESCRIPTION:A scholar and activist’s brilliant socio-political examination of Asian Americans who refuse to assimilate and instead build their own belonging on their own terms outside of mainstream American institutions\, transforming the ways we understand race\, class\, and citizenship in America.\n\n\nIn this hard-hitting and deeply personal book\, a combination of manifesto and memoir\, scholar\, sociologist\, and activist Bianca Mabute-Louie transforms the ways we understand race\, class\, American respectability\, and the concept of assimilation and its impact on Asian American communities from the nineteenth century to present day. \n\n\n\n\nUNASSIMILABLE opens with a focus on the San Gabriel Valley (SGV)\, the first Asian ethnoburb in Los Angeles County and in the nation\, where she grew up. A suburban neighborhood with a conspicuous Asian immigrant population\, SGV thrives not because of its assimilation into Whiteness\, but because of its unapologetic catering to its immigrant community. \nMabute-Louie then examines “Predominantly White Institutions With A lot of Asians” and how these institutions shape the racial politics of Asian Americans and Asian internationals\, including the fight against affirmative action and the fight for ethnic studies. She moves on to interrogate the role of the religion\, showing how the immigrant church is a sanctuary even as it is an extension of colonialism and the American Empire. In the book’s conclusion\, Bianca looks to the future\, boldly proposing a reconsideration of the term Asian American for a new label that better clarifies who Asians in America are today. \nUNASSIMILABLE offers a radical vision of Asian American political identity informed by a refusal of Whiteness and collective care for each other. It is a forthright declaration against assimilation and in service of cross-racial\, anti-imperialist solidarity and revolutionary politics. Scholarly yet accessible\, informative and informed\, this book is a major addition to Ethnic Studies and American Studies. \n\n\nAbout the author: \nBianca Mabute-Louie is completing her PhD at Rice University\, where she researches the intersections of race\, religion\, and politics. She is published in top academic journals\, including Social Forces\, Socius\, and Sociology of Race and Ethnicity\, as well as in public outlets like Elle Magazine. Bianca has been featured in CNN\, TIME\, ABC\, LA Times\, among other outlets.

SUMMARY:Staying Inside the 501(c)(3) Lines: Keeping Nonpartisan in Messy Partisan Times
DESCRIPTION:Things are\, like\, a little cray-cray out there in 2025\, right? \n2024 was bound to be a loud year with such a hotly contested presidential election. But from where we stand\, 2025 has grabbed hold of that “PARTISAN” knob and cranked it all the way up to 11. But with a year of NONPARTISAN VOTER REGISTRATION ahead of us at National Voter Registration Day\, we think it’s high time to brush up on the fundamentals of celebrating democracy without so much as a whiff of ideological nonsense.

\nAbout the Author. \nBianca Mabute-Louieis an award-winning sociologist\, speaker\, and activist completing her PhD at Rice University\, where she researches the intersections of race\, religion\, and politics. She is published in top academic journals as well as in public outlets like Elle. Mabute-Louie has been featured on CNN\, ABC\, and in Time and the Los Angeles Times\, among other outlets. She lives in Houston. \nAbout the Moderator.\nMalavika Kannan is a Gen Z Tamil American writer. She is the author of UNPRECEDENTED TIMES (forthcoming Henry Holt 2026)\, a campus novel set against the apocalyptic background of the pandemic. SUMMARY:C100 Asian American Career Ceilings "How to Become a Public Company CEO"
DESCRIPTION:Topic: “How to Become a Public Company CEO” \nSpeaker: John T.C. Lee\, PhD\, President and Chief Executive Officer\, MKS Instruments\, Inc. \nModerator: Peter Young\, Committee of 100 Member and CEO\, Young & Partners \nThe data from many respected researchers shows that Asian Americans are severely underrepresented in the CEO ranks of both private and public companies\, particularly if you exclude Asian American CEOs who founded their company. Although this is not necessary true for Indian Americans\, it is clearly true for the other East and South Asian American ethnicities. Many of our previous events had highlighted this problem\, shared the research data from professors of prominent universities\, and interviewed senior executives in a number of industries. \nFor this event we have the privilege of conducting a Master Class fireside chat with John Lee\, the President and Chief Executive Officer of MKS Instruments\, Inc. MKS Instruments is a public company with $3.6 billion in revenues that provides products and technologies used to measure\, control\, power\, and monitor critical process parameters of advanced manufacturing processes. \nAfter a very successful career rising through the ranks of a number of companies\, he joined MKS Instruments in 2007\, was promoted to increasingly senior roles and became CEO in 2020. \nHe will provide his observations and advice on how an Asian American can rise through the ranks of a public company to become CEO. Although some of obstacles and required skills are independent of ethnicity\, there are clearly some that are particularly true for or applicable to rising Asian Americans. He will share his own personal journey through the corporate ranks and his view of how the parameters of success have changed over time and will continue to change in the future. The webinar will be one hour long. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions during the last ten minutes of the webinar. \n▦ Speaker Bio: \nJohn T.C.
