Age 16+ \nChan Is Missing is a groundbreaking black-and-white film that follows two American-born Chinese cab drivers\, Jo and his nephew Steve\, as they search for Chan Hung\, a middleman who suddenly disappears with their money meant for taxi medallions. Their quest to find Chan takes them deep into San Francisco’s Chinatown\, uncovering the complexities of his life as a Chinese immigrant struggling with assimilation and identity in America. As Jo delves further into Chan’s world\, his frustration turns to empathy\, revealing the nuances of the immigrant experience. \nThis film marked the directorial debut of Wayne Wang\, an internationally recognized filmmaker known for amplifying Asian American voices through independent cinema. As one of the first feature-length films of the Asian American cinema movement\, Chan Is Missing is celebrated for its authentic portrayal of Chinatown in the early 1980s\, featuring characters that felt true to everyday life. The film won Best Experimental/Independent Film from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association in 1982 and was later selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural\, historical\, and aesthetic significance. Wang later gained further acclaim for directing Smoke(1995)\, which won multiple international awards\, including the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. \nStarring: Woody Moy\, Marc Hayashi\, Laureen Chew \n  \nPOST-FILM CONVERSATION\nStay after the screening for a conversation between MOCA’s Curator Herb Tam and NYAFF’s Executive Director Sam Jamier\, starting at 8:20 PM. SUMMARY:Beyond Hard Work: How to Advocate for Your Wants Without Feeling “Too Much”
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Hard Work: How to Advocate for Your Wants Without Feeling “Too Much”\nLeadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP)  LEAP Connect with Nicole Cruz\, Wednesday April 16th at 12:00pm (PST)/ 3pm EST \nMany of us were raised to believe that hard work speaks for itself—but in reality\, staying silent about our contributions often keeps us overlooked and underrecognized. For many Asian Pacific Islanders\, the fear of being seen as “too much” or “too demanding” can make self-advocacy feel uncomfortable. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll unpack the cultural and systemic reasons we downplay our value and reframe self-advocacy as a skill that honors both our work and our worth. You’ll learn how to communicate your impact with confidence\, advocate for your needs without guilt\, and embrace visibility in a way that feels authentic—not performative. Through guided exercises and real-world examples\, you’ll walk away with tangible strategies to ask for what you deserve—whether it’s a raise\, leadership opportunities\, or simply more respect in your personal and professional life. \nThis workshop is tailored to the API experience but is open to all allies and community members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLEAP Connect leadership workshops are free\, accessible to the public\, and are intended to bring a safe space to the community. Participants can walk away from the sessions with the tools and resources necessary to increase their leadership skills and inspire change. \n

SUMMARY:War’s Long Shadow: Generational Grief from War - Watch Party and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us to watch a recording of a conversation between Jungwon Kim and Linda Thai on the impact of war on generational grief!\n\n\nWar’s Long Shadow Watch Party and Community Conversation \nJoin us to watch a recording of a conversation between Jungwon Kim and Linda Thai on the impact of war on generational grief followed by a guided community conversation! \nTogether\, we’ll watch the beautiful conversation between Linda Thai and Jungwon Kim where they explore psychological\, spiritual\, and communal reverberations of historical violence\, framed within the context of U.S. wars in Korea and Vietnam\, yet deeply relevant to other conflicts\, past and present. Their conversation touches on themes of intergenerational war trauma and grief as well as how we can use communal ritual practices towards collective healing. This conversation was hosted and recorded by Science and Nonduality on March 12. \nThe recording will be followed by a guided community conversation and connection practice. \nMeet the Instructor: \nAngela is a Visionary Organizing and Kingian Nonviolence facilitator-trainer working towards a world where we have increased capacities to sit with our own and each other’s complexities. Angela stewards community containers where participants can share grief\, practice conflict skills\, and be co-opted into emergence inspired by the erotic\, the intuitive\, the divine\, and the more-than-human.

SUMMARY:The New Rap Language: How Musicians Continue to Transform the Spoken Word
DESCRIPTION:Groundbreaking musicians Audry Funk\, Bartika Eam Rai\, and Felukah sit down with renowned journalist Jessica Lipksy to discuss using their native and adopted languages to shape their unique styles\, and how their artistry speaks to issues important to them. \nThe discussion will be followed by short performances from each artist demonstrating their special techniques. \nJessica Lipsky is an award-winning journalist and managing editor at the Recording Academy. When she’s not collecting records to DJ\, she writes about them for the New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, NPR\, the Washington Post\, Columbia Journalism Review\, Wax Poetics and elsewhere. Her book\, It Ain’t Retro\, a biography of Daptone Records and the revival soul scene\, was largely researched and written at New York’s library systems. \n  \nKnown as Audry Funk\, Audry Bustos Díaz is a singer – songwriter\, MC\, and activist born in Puebla\, Mexico who is considered as one of the most important exponents of Hip-Hop in Spanish. Residing in the Bronx\, New York\, she has an international presence in the independent music industry for twenty years. During this time\, her powerful message has reached different high-profile venues\, while also giving talks about philosophy\, feminism and migration at forums around the world. \n  \nBartika Eam Rai is a New York based singer-songwriter\, celebrated for her poetry-like lyrics\, haunting vocal and authenticity. Rai was born and raised in Kathmandu\, but it was only after moving to the US that she decided to experiment her prose as music\, in an attempt to express the displacement that consumed her\, intensified by the tangible realization of leaving home. She recognizes her medium being intertwined with her longing for home and perennial identity crisis of existing as a Nepali in a non-Nepali world\, which is why all her recorded music is intentionally created in Nepali\, her mother-tongue. Her albums have received rave reviews and she has been the recipient of Nepal’s national music awards. Bartika is currently working on her first book\, tiny excerpts of which\, was written inside the New York Public Library! \n  \nFelukah is an Egyptian rapper\, singer\, poet and activist. Seamlessly blending her Arabic culture into Western sounds\, Felukah is dubbed the ‘Arabfuturist songstress\,’ or the artist paving the way for a ‘new wave of Arab women.’ Felukah’s music and revolutionary character has garnered the attention of thousands in the Middle East as well as the Western world\, landing her opportunities with the FIFA World Cup\, Harvard University\, the Brooklyn Museum\, Boiler Room TV\, and more. Felukah’s new collaboration with Ash\, “On My Mind” showcases her versatility as a pop artist\, rapping and singing over a dance beat and staying true to her conscious lyrics about empowerment\, life and romance.

SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS - Two Stop
DESCRIPTION:A play exploring interracial tension through the experiences of a Black teen\, her mother\, and a Korean immigrant during the 1992 LA Riots.\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America is honored to host playwright David Johann Kim for a presentation of his poignant play Two Stop\, which premiered last year at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in Los Angeles. \nSet against the backdrop of the Los Angeles Riots (April 29\, 2025 marks its 33rd Anniversary)\, in the tiny Two Stop market\, a headstrong Black teen\, her fierce mother and a lone Korean émigré shop owner reach back decades and even across the globe through war\, strife\, love and heartbreak to find connection and even hope? …but will it be enough? \n  \nABOUT the Playwright\nDAVID JOHANN KIM \nDavid’s plays PANG SPA and TWO STOP had their Los Angeles premiere produced by Chalk Rep and Ensemble Studio Theatre LA in Spring of 2024 and both received critical praise including Outstanding Production of a Drama (Intimate Theater) for both. TWO STOP was named BEST SHOW in the 2024 LA Theatre Bites Awards. Both plays were funded in part by VENTUROUS THEATER FUND and LA New Play Project. As a young actor\, David fell hard for new play development while working with powerhouse dramaturgs Mame Hunt (at Berkeley Rep) and Morgan Jenness ( NYSF’s New Works Now Festival and NY Theatre Workshop’s Dartmouth retreat). Mabou Mines’ Ruth Malaczech asked David to be part of the writers group when she was devising A Drop In The Ocean in residence at New York Theater Workshop. Les Waters selected him to be part of the devising team for their Joint Stock-style production\, Act 3 Sc 2 of Life at UC San Diego. He later lead Watts Village Theatre Company in the Joint Stock process for their production of B-Flight. His plays Two Stop and Pang Spa were awarded the 2022 Los Angeles New Play Project Award and Grant. as well as Venturous Theatre Fund Grants. Two Stop was workshopped in 2023 at The Inkwell Theater. Pang Spa was a semifinalist for the 2018 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference\, Ashland New Play Festival and Bay Area Playwrights Festival and the final round of Dennis and Victoria Ross Foundation Playwrights Program. \nDavid spent the first half of his career in the theatre primarily as an actor. He originated lead roles in new plays including Han Ong’s Reasons To Live…\, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ Innocent Erendira\, Milton Murayama’s All I Asking For Is My Body\, Larry Yep’s Dragonwings\, Alan Cook’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East Of Eden\, Lynn Manning’s Up From The Downs\, and Jessica Hagedorn’s Holy Food. He performed at theatres on both coasts including: The Public Theatre\, NY Theatre Workshop\, The Lark\, Mabou Mines\, Repertorio Espanol\, La Mama ETC in NYC and Berkeley Repertory Theatre\, Magic Theatre\, Asian American Theatre Co. and El Teatro Campesino in California. \nHe holds an MFA from UC San Diego and is a member of The Dramatists Guild\, The Playwrights Union\, Circle X Theatre’s 2024 Evolving Playwrights Group\, Chalk Rep’s Writers group\, Playwrights ThinkTank\, EST/LA’s Playwrights Unit and is a co-founder of EST/LA’s Ignite Project. \nHis latest play IMAGINED NOISE… is currently in development. \n*All ticket sales are final. Unfortunately\, we are unable to issue refunds under any circumstances at this time. This ticketing policy is not intended to create barriers based on financial status but rather to ensure the sustainability of our practice—allowing us to compensate artists while keeping our events accessible and welcoming to everyone. \n**MOCA members are required to present their MOCA ID at check-in.

SUMMARY:Healing & Storytelling: Brooklyn Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join the special screening of Far East Deep South\, followed by a discussion on Asian American History and Intergenerational Well-being.\n\n\nLet’s talk about Asian American History and Intergenerational Well-being. Join this special screening of Far East Deep South in New York\, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers\, an Asian American scholar\, and a mental health practitioner on April 12\, 2:00-4:30 PM at Brooklyn Chinese Baptist Church. \nAbout The Film \nFar East Deep South is the award-winning 76-minute documentary about a Chinese American Christian family whose search for their roots leads them to Mississippi. On this journey\, they find miraculous family revelations and uncover the racially complex history of Chinese in the segregated South. The film not only shows a powerful family testimony\, but it explores the seldom discussed discrimination Asians historically faced and touches upon the role of the church in helping establish Chinese mission schools. It also highlights the interconnected relationship between the Black and Chinese communities in the Jim Crow era and the generational impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act. \n\n\nAbout The Panel \nConverse about healing and storytelling with filmmakers Larissa Lam\, award-winning director and accomplished music artist\, and Baldwin Chiu\, award-winning film producer and Gospel hip hop artist (a.k.a “Only Won”)\, Asian American Christian History scholar Dr. Timothy Tseng\, Director of the Asian American Christian History Institute (Fuller)\, and mental health practitioner Hilary Chiu\, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (Redeemer Counseling). \nPanel facilitated by Daniel D. Lee\, Academic Dean of Fuller’s Center for Asian American Theology and Ministry (AAC) and Associate Professor of Theology and Asian American Studies. \nAdmission is FREE\, thanks to the grant funding of the KT Foundation.

SUMMARY:National (un)Belonging: Bengali American Women on Imagining and Contesting
DESCRIPTION:Based on research from her book\, Roksana Badruddoja explores the lives of two second-generation gender-queer South Asian American folx.\n\nMuch queer theory in America is based on white male experience and privilege\, excluding people of color and severely limiting its relevance to third-world activism. Within the last three decades\,  chronicles from gay lesbian bisexual transgender intersex queer (GLBTIQ) communities within the South Asian diaspora in the United States have appeared\, but the richness and contradictions that characterize these communities have been stifled. Too often\, the limitations due to undertheorized South Asian American lesbian\, bisexual\, and transsexual histories—compounded by a queer canon overwrought with the East/West and tradition/modern equations—render queer South Asian Americans as a monolithic homogeneous category with little or no agency. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Roksana Badruddoja visits paradoxes\, difficulties\, unity\, and diversity by unraveling the lives of two second-generation gender-queer South Asian American folx\, Rupa and Ronica. They show us ways in which an often invisible and marginalized group accepts\, manipulates\, and resists hegemonic powers. A core question Dr. Badruddoja advances in her research is how can historically disenfranchised lives be animated and made to interrupt binaried discourses? She answers the question by offering an embodied theorization of an assemblage of multiple saberes or knowings that avoid the traps of binary discourses. One of the ways she accomplishes this is by offering ethnographic work as a compelling narrative and theorization of decoloniality. \nPurchase Book: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/
