SUMMARY:Theater and Resource Fair: The Hunger & The Haunt
DESCRIPTION:The Hunger & The Haunt is an original theatrical song recital and community resource fair held at Culture Lab LIC on April 4 and 5\, 2025 at 7:00 PM. \nThe performance explores how folks from the AANHPI diaspora reclaim connection to their heritage and discover new pathways towards ancestral nourishment. This interdisciplinary work combines contemporary dance\, spoken poetry\, and classical music by exclusively AANHPI composers to tell the fantastical story of a Chinese American girl trying to find her way home as she traverses a mysterious pit of forgotten stories. \nThe performance will be presented by an ensemble of Asian American women\, including Abagael Cheng (soprano)\, Marie Lloyd Paspe (dancer)\, and Amber Scherer (piano). The curated recital program features works by Juhi Bansal\, Chihchun Chi-Su Lee\, Shruti Rajasekar\, Angela Yam\, Johnum Palado\, and Teresa Mei Chuc\, among others. \nEach performance will be complemented by a community resource fair at 8:30 PM\, where local organizations that empower AANHPI communities in Queens will share information about their work and offer concrete ways to get involved. Partner organizations include the South Asian Youth Action\, MinKwon Center for Community Action\, Korean American Civic Empowerment\, and more. Representing a variety of neighborhoods and AANHPI identities across Queens\, these organizations advocate for residents around issues of housing\, civic engagement\, youth leadership\, and economic and social justice. \nTickets are offered on a sliding scale from $10-$40 in advance and $20-$50 at the door. A limited number of free tickets are available upon request to abagael.cheng@gmail.com\, for those with financial barriers. \nTo learn about the accessibility of the venue\, please visit www.culturelablic.org/accessibility.

SUMMARY:Creating Archives: Book Talk with Gaiuthra Bahadur
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive talk\, Prof. Gaiutra Bahadur will discuss her book\, Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture (University of Chicago Press\, 2013)\, and dive deep into the processes of creating a living archive\, collecting oral stories\, and preserving family histories.\n\nAbout Coolie Woman\nGaiutra Bahadur uncovers the story of her great-grandmother\, a young woman who sailed from India to Guiana in 1903 as an indentured laborer\, or “coolie\,” replacing emancipated slaves on sugar plantations. Through her journey across three continents and extensive research in colonial archives\, Bahadur not only uncovers her ancestor’s life but also sheds light on the repressed history of the quarter of a million coolie women. These women\, often widows or outcasts\, endured harsh labor\, poor conditions\, and sexual exploitation\, using their sexuality as a tool for survival and sometimes inciting uprisings. Coolie Woman is a gripping exploration of gender\, power\, and survival across generations\, revealing a complex\, untold history. \nPurchase Book: https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/C/bo13393932.html \nThis lecture is part of the Localized History Project Workshop Series

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Boat Baby by Vicky Nguyen with Hoda Kotb
DESCRIPTION:In a memoir where heroism meets humor\, NBC News anchor and correspondent Vicky Nguyen tells the story of her family’s daring escape from communist Vietnam and her unlikely journey from refugee to reporter with laughter and fierce love. \nStarting in 1975\, Vietnam’s “boat people”—desperate families seeking freedom—fled the Communist government and violence in their country any way they could\, usually by boat across the South China Sea. Vicky Nguyen and her family were among them. Attacked at sea by pirates before reaching a refugee camp in Malaysia\, Vicky’s family survived on rations and waited months until they were sponsored to go to America. \nBut deciding to leave and start a new life in a new country is half the story…figuring out how to be American is the other. Boat Baby is Vicky’s memoir of growing up in America with unconventional Vietnamese parents who didn’t always know how to bridge the cultural gaps. It’s a childhood filled with misadventures and misunderstandings\, from almost stabbing the neighborhood racist with a butter knife to getting caught stealing Cosmo in the hope of learning Do You Really Think You Know Everything About Sex? \nVicky’s parents approached life with the attitude\, “Why not us?” In the face of prejudice\, they taught her to be gritty and resilient\, skills Vicky used as she combatted stereotyping throughout her career\, fending off the question “Aren’t you Connie Chung?” to become a leading Asian American journalist on television. She delivers a uniquely transparent account of her life\, revealing how she negotiated her salary in a competitive industry\, the challenges of starting a family\, and the struggle to be a dutiful daughter. \nFunny\, nostalgic\, and poignant\, Boat Baby is a testament to the messy glue that bonds a family. In the tradition of We Are Dreamers by Simu Liu and Dear Girls by Ali Wong\, Vicky Nguyen offers an optimistic story full of heart that illuminates the promise of what America can be.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month: NĀ MELE HAWAIʻI — SONGS OF HAWAIʻI
DESCRIPTION:aaiEnjoy Hawaiian music and dance celebrating women\, with musicians and a dancer.\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of mele (song) and hula (dance) celebrating women of Hawaiʻi\, with musicians Kainoa Yasui\, Kanileʻa Goddard\, and Kristian Lloyd\, and dancer Kawena. \nFeaturing female composers\, lyricists\, and choreographers\, the performance will share standards from the canon of 20-21st century Hawaiian music and hula ʻauana that animate stories from Kauaʻi\, Oʻahu\, Maui\, and Hawaiʻi island. \nA short Q&A will end the program\, with a community mixer to follow. \nNā Mele Hawaiʻi — Songs of Hawaiʻi is a free community program presented by Queens Public Library\, and the first Hawaiʻi-focused event offered at the Flushing branch. Special thanks to Kumu Kaliko Beamer-Trapp\, Kahu Kris\, and Kanoe Cazimero. \nARTIST BIOS \nTAYLOR KAINOA YASUI was born and raised in Hawaiʻi on the island of Oʻahu in the area known as Maunalua. Collaborating and fostering relationships in business as a real estate agent and in music as a classically trained cellist is where Kainoa finds purpose in his life. Kainoa was instilled with Hawaiian values and culture throughout his education at Kamehameha Schools\, a beneficiary of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s trust and estate. \nCLAUDIA KANILEʻA GODDARD’s vocals are a result of a blend of classical training and a passion for Hawaiian music and culture. A coloratura soprano\, she also plays ʻukulele and Hawaiian Slack Key guitar. When in Hawaiʻi\, she studies with slack key guitar masters Keola Beamer and Ozzie Kotani (both of whom were featured in the all-slack key soundtrack to the Oscar-award winning film “The Descendants”). In NYC\, Claudia is the musician for kumu hula (master hula teacher) Vicky Holt Takamine’s group Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima o Nuioka\, an extension of Kumu’s hālau on Oʻahu. \nKRISTIAN LLOYD got his start in Hawaiian music at 14 years old in his school’s Hawaiian Ensemble with Jon Toda. Soon after\, he began studying under Grammy nominee and multiple Nā Hoku award winner\, Kamalei Kawaʻa\, of Nā Wai Eha\, learning leo kiʻekiʻe (Hawaiian falsetto techniques). At 18\, he began dancing with nā kumu Iliahi and Haunani Paredes of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi. Kristian is currently a student at Columbia University where he sings for the Hawaiʻi club\, Mālama Hawaiʻi. Whenever he is home on Maui\, Kristian also works as a musician for Tihati Productions. \nKAWENA is from Honolulu\, Hawaiʻi. She began dancing hula at age 5\, learning from Kumu April Chock at Kamehameha Summer School. In middle and high school\, she studied under nā Kumu Lehua Carvalho and Ed Collier and met her mentor\, Kanoe Cazimero. When dancing\, her goal is to perpetuate the ʻike (knowledge) she has been trusted with. \nKawena has offered hula courtesy of American Indian Community House\, Brooklyn College\, Cullman Education Center MoMA\, and The Watermill Center. She collaborates frequently with Taylor Kainoa Yasui and is currently based on Canarsie and Munsee Lenape land (Brooklyn\, NY). \nRegister for up to 3 free tickets.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Jinwoo Chong on I Leave It Up To You\, In Conversation With Grant Ginder
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brooklyn Heights Library to hear Jinwoo Chong discuss his new novel I Leave It Up to You with Grant Ginder.\nFrom the award-winning author of Flux comes a dazzling novel about love\, family\, and the art of sushi that asks: What if you could return to the point of a fateful choice\, wiser than before\, and find the courage to forge a new path? \nA coma can change a man\, but the world Jack Jr. awakens to is one he barely recognizes. His advertising job is history\, his Manhattan apartment is gone\, and the love of his life has left him behind. He’s been asleep for two years; with no one to turn to\, he realizes it’s been ten years since he last saw his family. \nLost and disoriented\, he makes a reluctant homecoming back to the bustling Korean American enclave of Fort Lee\, New Jersey; back into the waiting arms of his parents\, who are operating under the illusion he never left; and back to Joja\, their ever-struggling sushi restaurant that he was set to inherit before he ran away from it all. As he steps back into the life he abandoned—learning his Appa’s life lessons over crates of tuna on bleary-eyed 4 AM fish runs\, doling out amberjack behind the omakase counter while his Umma tallies the night’s pitiful number of customers\, and sparring with his recovering alcoholic brother\, James—he embraces new roles\, too: That of romantic interest to the male nurse who took care of him throughout\, and that of sage (but underqualified) uncle to his gangly teenage nephew. \nWhy do we run from those we love\, and why do we still love those who run from us? A highly entertaining and poignant story about second chances and self-discovery\, I Leave It Up to You navigates loss\, love\, and the absurdity of finding one’s footing after the ground gives way. \n\nJinwoo Chong is the author of the novel Flux\, a New York Times Editor’s Choice\, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award\, and named a best book of 2023 by Apple Books\,  Amazon Books\, Esquire\, HuffPost\, GQ\, Cosmopolitan\, and Goodreads. His work has appeared in Guernica\, The Southern Review\, The Rumpus\, LitHub\, Chicago Quarterly Review\, and Electric Literature. He lives in New York with his husband and cat. \nGrant Ginder is the author of the novels Let’s Not Do That Again\, Honestly\, We Meant Well\, The People We Hate at the Wedding\, Driver’s Education\, and This is How It Starts. Originally from Southern California\, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MFA from NYU\, where he currently teaches writing. He lives in Brooklyn with his husband\, Mac\, and their disastrous dog\, Frankie.

SUMMARY:Chinese American Excellence in Business & STEM
DESCRIPTION:Join Committee of 100 and The Asian American Education Project for a three-part series examining the rich contributions of Chinese Americans to U.S. society\, both historically and in the present day. The content was sourced from Committee of 100’s report “From Foundations to Frontiers: Chinese American Contributions to the Fabric of America.” \nChinese Americans have found success in the fields of business and entrepreneurship and science and technology. Their ability to thrive in these industries has been impacted by immigration policy at different moments in American history\, yet Chinese Americans have found ways to adapt and survive. In this workshop\, participants will learn about early Chinese American contributions to business and STEM\, and how they made progress in later decades up to the present. Participants will gain classroom resources for teaching these contributions in the classroom. \nThis workshop will be offered twice on Thursday\, March 27  at 1pm and 7pm EST to accommodate educators in different time zones. Each session will present the same content. \nThis workshop series is facilitated by Ashley Chu from The Asian American Education Project.
