SUMMARY:Clare Osongco presents "Midnights With You\," with Shannon C.F. Rogers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the New York launch of this YA romance about first love\, family ghosts\, and healing from generational trauma\n\n\nJoin Los Angeles–based biracial Filipina American writer Clare Osongco for the New York launch of her debut novel—a compelling YA romance about two traumatized teens who fall in love over a series of secret late-night driving lessons—with a reading\, conversation with author Shannon C.F. Rogers (I’d Rather Burn Than Bloom)\, signing\, and reception.\n \nPreorder your copy of Midnights With You! \n \nAbout the book\n \n“Where were you thinking of going?”“Nowhere.”“Great\,” he says lightly\, putting the car in gear. “Then we’ll go there.” \nSeventeen-year-old Deedee’s life is full of family ghosts and questions she can’t ask. She longs to escape her stifling home\, but guilt holds her back—that\, and the fact that her strict Filipino single mom won’t let her learn to drive. \nBut one sleepless night leads Deedee down a road she never thought possible: secret driving lessons with the new boy next door\, Jay\, whose turbulent family life also keeps him up until sunrise. \nAs midnights stretch into days\, Jay helps Deedee begin to unravel her past\, and as shared secrets blossom into love\, Deedee starts to imagine a life where happiness is possible. But the deeper she digs into the trauma that has shaped her\, the more that trauma threatens to tear Deedee and Jay apart. Together\, these two must decide if the pain they’ve both inherited has the power to choose their fate\, or if they have the power to choose for themselves. \n \nAbout the author\nClare Osongco is a biracial Filipina American author who likes to write about diaspora feelings and complicated relationships. Midnights With You (Disney-Hyperion\, Nov. 12\, 2024) is her debut novel. \n \nAbout Shannon C.F. Rogers\nShannon C.F. Rogers is a multiracial American writer of young adult novels and plays. While studying Creative Writing at the University of New Mexico and Writing For Young People at Antioch University Los Angeles\, she also served as an educator\, after-school program director\, and lost mitten finder at schools in Albuquerque\, Chicago\, and Brooklyn\, where she now lives. Her debut novel\, I’d Rather Burn Than Bloom\, won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Youth Literature in 2024.

SUMMARY:DOGEATERS by Jessica Hagedorn w/ Patrick Rosal & Lucy Yu
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the Penguin Classics launch of DOGEATERS with a conversation featuring Jessica Hagedorn\, Patrick Rosal & Lucy Yu!\n\n\nABOUT DOGEATERS \n“An original\, raw\, and wild novel that has held its power and demands to be read.” —Viet Thanh Nguyen\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer \nWelcome to Manila in the turbulent period of the Philippines’ late dictator. It is a world in which American pop culture and local Filipino tradition mix flamboyantly\, and gossip\, storytelling\, and extravagant behavior thrive. \nA wildly disparate group of characters—including movie stars and waiters\, a young junkie and the richest man in the Philippines—becomes ensnared in a spiral of events culminating in a beauty pageant\, a film festival\, and an assassination. At the center of this maelstrom is Rio\, a feisty schoolgirl who will grow up to live in America and look back with longing on the land of her youth. \nJessica Hagedorn is the author of the novels Dogeaters and The Gangster of Love\, Dream Jungle\, and a collection of poetry and short fiction\, Danger and Beauty. \nPatrick Rosal is an interdisciplinary artist and author of four previous books\, most recently Brooklyn Antediluvian\, winner of the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Award. He earned fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Fulbright Senior Research Program. He is Professor of English and inaugural Co-Director of the Institute for the Study of Global Racial Justice at Rutgers-Camden. \nLucy Yu is the owner of Yu & Me Books\, the first female Asian American-owned bookstore in Chinatown\, Manhattan. She loves reading\, running\, and resting.

SUMMARY:On Performance\, Poetics\, and Authoritarianism
DESCRIPTION:Christine Bacareza Balance presents ongoing research and writing from her book project\, Making Sense of Martial Law.\n\n\nProf. Christine Balance\, the 2024 CUNY Thomas Tam Visiting Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center\, will present ongoing research and writing from her book project\, Making Sense of Martial Law. In it\, she studies what the diverse and contradictory poetics of Philippine martial law (1972-1986) perform and reveal about authoritarianism and cultural memory\, as illustrated by both U.S.- and Philippines-based performances and productions. Making Sense of Martial Law also aims to illuminate important facets of the relationship between art and politics in dictatorships across the globe. \nBalance will offer a short presentation addressing the book’s main arguments\, themes\, and structure\, and her research & writing process\, as a way to open up discussion with others working in the fields of performance studies\, cultural studies\, transnational American studies\, Filipino/Filipino American studies\, and Southeast Asian studies\, as well as those interested in bridging critical & creative writing\, scholarly & public humanities projects.

SUMMARY:Midnight Release Party: The City and Its Uncertain Walls
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the midnight release of Haruki Murakami’s The City and Its Uncertain Walls! Featuring games\, prizes\, tea from Kettl Tea\, sake from Kato Sake works\, Milk Bar muffins (“Murakuffins”) inspired by the book\, and more! Be the first to receive your copy right at midnight! \nABOUT THE CITY AND ITS UNCERTAIN WALLS \nFrom the bestselling author of Norwegian Wood and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World comes a love story\, a quest\, an ode to books and to the libraries that house them\, and a parable for our peculiar times. \nWe begin with a nameless young couple: a boy and a girl\, teenagers in love. One day\, she disappears . . . and her absence haunts him for the rest of his life. \nThus begins a search for this lost love that takes the man into middle age and on a journey between the real world and an other world – a mysterious\, perhaps imaginary\, walled town where unicorns roam\, where a Gatekeeper determines who can enter and who must remain behind\, and where shadows become untethered from their selves. Listening to his own dreams and premonitions\, the man leaves his life in Tokyo behind and ventures to a small mountain town\, where he becomes the head librarian\, only to learn the mysterious circumstances surrounding the gentleman who had the job before him. As the seasons pass and the man grows more uncertain about the porous boundaries between these two worlds\, he meets a strange young boy who helps him to see what he’s been missing all along. \nThe City and Its Uncertain Walls is a singular and towering achievement by one of modern literature’s most important writers.

SUMMARY:MOCA TALKS – Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear Curtis Chin’s story and explore the themes of resilience\, cultural heritage\, and activism that resonate throughout his work.\n\n\nCan’t attend in person? Register for virtual participation \nThe Museum of Chinese in America invites you to an engaging MOCA TALKS event featuring Curtis Chin\, author of the award-winning memoir Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. In this insightful discussion\, Chin will share his experiences growing up in 1980s Detroit against the backdrop of his family’s popular Chinese restaurant. His memoir captures a journey of self-discovery during a time marked by rising xenophobia\, the AIDS crisis\, and the shifting social and political climate of the Reagan era\, illustrating how these challenges shaped his identity as a writer and activist. \nAs a filmmaker and co-founder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, Chin has dedicated his career to exploring cultural identity\, community\, and social justice through storytelling. He will delve into his evolution from comedy writing to producing documentaries that address critical social issues. The conversation\, moderated by Yifan Wu\, MOCA’s Director of Programs\, will offer insights into the intersection of personal history and larger social movements\, inspiring reflection and dialogue. \nIn celebration of the paperback release\, Chin has organized a series of events at beloved Chinese restaurants across the country to share their stories and discuss their history and challenges. Learn more about this national tour and join one of these special gatherings in New York Chinatown at Hop Lee on Wednesday\, November 20 at www.curtisfromdetroit.com. \nAbout Curtis Chin \nCurtis Chin is the author of the award-winning memoir\, Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. A co-founder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop in New York City\, Chin served as the non-profits’ first Executive Director. He went on to write comedy for network and cable before transitioning to social justice documentaries. Chin has screened his films at over 600 venues in twenty countries. He has written for CNN\, Bon Appetit\, the Detroit Free Press\, and the Emancipator/Boston Globe. A graduate of the University of Michigan\, Chin has received awards from ABC/Disney Television\, New York Foundation for the Arts\, National Endowment for the Arts\, and more. He is currently working on a docuseries on the history of Chinese restaurants in the US. \nAbout Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant \nNineteen eighties Detroit was a volatile place to live\, but above the fray stood a safe haven: Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine\, where anyone—from the city’s first Black mayor to the local drag queens\, from a big-time Hollywood star to elderly Jewish couples—could sit down for a warm\, home-cooked meal. Here was where\, beneath a bright-red awning and surrounded by his multigenerational family\, filmmaker and activist Curtis Chin came of age; where he learned to embrace his identity as a gay ABC\, or American-born Chinese; where he navigated the divided city’s spiraling misfortunes; and where—between helpings of almond boneless chicken\, sweet-and-sour pork\, and some of his own\, less-savory culinary concoctions—he realized just how much he had to offer to the world\, to his beloved family\, and to himself. \nServed up by the co-founder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and structured around the very menu that graced the tables of Chung’s\, Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant is both a memoir and an invitation: to step inside one boy’s childhood oasis\, scoot into a vinyl booth\, and grow up with him—and perhaps even share something off the secret menu.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:Come join Belladonna’s first full-length book launch since 2020 at our first partnership with AAWW!\n\n\nCome join Belladonna’s first full-length book launch since 2020 at our first partnership with AAWW! We are so excited to be able to celebrate the release of Mia You’s book FESTIVAL with two other fabulous Korean American poets who have released their own pieces this year. \nThe festival is a space of communion and celebration\, a romanticized collision of bodies\, music and magic. The revolution will look like a festival\, we’ve been told by philosophers\, writers\, artists\, and marketers. But the festival is also\, of course\, the space of formalizing ideology\, ritualizing the consumption and violence that propels existing structures of power. \nThis poetry collection views the migrant\, female body as both the glorified and martyred totem of the festival-of-all-festivals we call globalization. Drawing from sources such as Sigmund Freud\, James George Frazer\, H.D.\, the Situationist International\, seventeenth century narratives of Dutch sailors shipwrecked on the Korean peninsula\, the rise of K-pop and the “Korean Wave\,” and a zoo-breaking gorilla named Bokito\, Festival features kaleidoscopic poetic sequences aiming to show that if anything universal is to be found in lyric poetry’s “I\,” it is the result of centuries-long entanglements and contaminations\, and of the bodies made to bear these exchanges\, to give birth to this century’s globalized subject. \n__ \nMia You is author of the poetry collections Festival (Belladonna* Collaborative\, 2024) and I\, Too\, Dislike It (1913 Press\, 2016)\, as well as the chapbooks Rouse the Ruse and the Rush (Nion Editions\, 2023) and Objective Practice (Achiote Press\, 2007). Her poems have appeared in Boston Review\, Chicago Review\, Cordite Poetry Review\, the PEN Poetry Series\, and Poetry. She currently teaches Anglophone literature at the Universiteit Utrecht and in the Critical Studies program at the Sandberg Institute. \nStine An (안수연) is a Korean American poet\, literary translator\, and performer based in Queens. Her work has appeared in Best Literary Translations 2024\, Best American Experimental Writing 2018\, Electric Literature\, Black Warrior Review\, World Literature Today\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere. She holds a BA in Literature from Harvard College and an MFA in Literary Arts from Brown University and is the recipient of fellowships and grants from The Poetry Project\, PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant\, Yaddo\, ALTA\, Vermont Studio Center\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her translations include Today’s Morning Vocabulary by Yoo Heekyung (Zephyr Press\, 2025) and Comet and Star: A Story of Cosmic Friendship\, written by the musician and composer Lee Juck and illustrated by Lee Jinhee (Enchanted Lion Books\, 2024). Her debut poetry collection\, B-Dragon Suite (Nightboat Books\, 2026)\, is a winner of the 2023 Nightboat Poetry Prize. \nJimin Seo was born in Seoul\, and immigrated to the US to join his family at the age of eight. He is the author of OSSIA\, winner of The Changes Book Prize. His most recent projects were Poems of Consumption with H. Sinno at the Barbican Centre in London\, and a site activation for salazarsequeromedina’s Open Pavilion at the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority. We invite you to practice intentionality and care in your behavior and language when engaging with our programs and with each other. Violence of any kind\, including but not limited to racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, ageism\, class or casteism\, bigotry or bias toward religion or faith\, or any action or assault against marginalized identities\, is not tolerated. Those who bring harm to our community in person or online are not welcome\, and will be asked to exit the space. \nThe event will be live streamed on Zoom with auto captioning for those who cannot join us in person. For those joining us in person\, we are located on the 6th floor of 112 W 27th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues)\, there is an elevator that will take you directly to our office. To protect our friends with chemical sensitivities\, AAWW is a fragrance-free space. Masks are required for audience members for all AAWW events; if you forget yours\, one will be provided for you. We have three commercial grade air purifiers\, and a quiet room in the back should you need some space from the crowd. We highly encourage all in person guests to take a COVID test at home prior to the event. If you have had COVID or have had known contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID in the 10 days prior\, we ask you tune in for the live stream instead. Please reach out to msaleh@aaww.org for additional accessibility requests\, including ADA accessible bathrooms\, chairs with added back support\, and beyond. This space is for YOU!

SUMMARY:Printing the Battlefront with Jo-Ann Wong
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, cartographers joined the ranks of journalists in the efforts to convey information quickly and effectively to the public. Where geographical accuracy had once been a map’s prime aspiration\, the immediacy of the moment and the desire for editorial flair created a demand for maps that reported current events and military strategies with illustrations\, expanded infographics\, and eye-catching fonts. Using materials from the Library’s collections\, Jo-Ann Wong\, reference librarian at the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division\, demonstrates the ways in which new needs and desire for information reshaped cartographic traditions.

Five LGBTQIA+ Asian American storytellers from different backgrounds will share their personal narratives surrounding family. Following their presentations\, we will open the floor for program guests to share their own stories. We look forward to your participation in a night of meaningful storytelling.

Pre-order your signed copy here. \n \nPlease also consider making a donation with your RSVP! Donations go to Seward Park Campus Library (@SparkCampusLibrary)\, a proud NYC Public School high school library. Our library serves the five high schools in the building\, and in partnership with New Design High School\, we have been able to build a podcast/music recording studio to help students build 21st century skills. To that end\, we are in the process of building MarkerSpark – a creative Makerspace focused on 3D engineering and design. Your donations are crucial to making this happen. Help us build out the vision of next year’s leaders. \n \nABOUT THE BOOK \nFrom standup comedian Youngmi Mayer\, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw\, enviable freedom that simply floors you\,” interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality in America\, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan\, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). \n“Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood\, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother\, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. \n \nIn I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying\, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan\, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness\, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea\, while reflecting how years later\, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom\, all the while interrogating whiteness\, gender\, and sexuality. \n \nYoungmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all\, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang\, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart\, heart-wrenching\, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom.
