SUMMARY:MOCA PERFORMS - Standing Above Pajaro
DESCRIPTION:An opera staged reading of Standing Above Pajaro\, which is inspired by the Watsonville Riots in 1930\n\n\nThe Museum of Chinese in America proudly supports the creative journey of generative artists in the development of new works. In this spirit\, we are honored to present Standing Above Pajaro\, a poignant new opera composed by Jeremy Rafal based on the original play by Conrad A. Panganiban. Returning to MOCA with this evocative piece\, Rafal delves into a turbulent chapter of American history\, offering a narrative that resonates deeply with contemporary issues of immigration\, identity\, and the human capacity for empathy. \nSet against the backdrop of 1930s Watsonville\, California\, Standing Above Pajaro unfolds on a desperate early morning when Celestino Tobera\, a Filipino farm worker\, seeks refuge in a general store\, fleeing an enraged mob intent on eradicating the Filipino community. The store’s owner\, Melissa Anne Crawley\, is faced with a heart-wrenching decision: protect Celestino or align with her son\, who leads the violent mob. \nThrough powerful music and compelling storytelling\, Standing Above Pajaro explores the collision between anti-Asian violence and the pursuit of the American Dream. It challenges audiences to reflect on the question: “What will it take to create empathy for immigrants seeking better opportunities and the willingness to help them?” \nThis program is supported by Museum of Chinese in America’s Creative Space Initiative. \n \nSTANDING ABOVE PAJARO \nA Filipino-American Imagined Opera Inspired by the 1930 Watsonville Riots \nOriginal Story and Libretto by Conrad A. SUMMARY:Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit: A Biography
DESCRIPTION:Manu Bhagavan will present his biography of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit\, based on eight years of research.\n\n\nAuthor/professor Aruni Kashyap will read from his new novel\, The Way You Want to Be Loved (Gaudy Boy\, 2024). \nAt a New Delhi conference\, an Assamese writer is interrogated on why he writes about magical folktales instead of the insurgencies. A mother splashes around in the village lake to mask the lovemaking sounds of her son with another man. A newly-arrived graduate student in Minnesota navigates living arrangements with his white roommate\, Mike\, and Mike’s Indian girlfriend. \nIn agile and frank prose\, The Way You Want to Be Loved tells the stories of queer\, displaced lives from India’s Northeast\, an underrepresented region in English fiction. A hybrid cast of characters represents the common people in these thirteen stories\, whether western-trained academic or village sorcerer\, army soldier or local politician\, homeward-bound son or dutiful daughter-in-law. They wrestle with diasporic melancholia\, the social pressures of familial duty\, and the search for their own personhood\, even as they live in a world where personhood is continually compromised and reshaped under oppressive forces larger than themselves. Aruni Kashyap offers up a powerful critique of the malfunctioning democracies of India and the U.S.\, deftly balancing devastation and tragedy with a darkly humorous tone that has readers questioning their laughter.

SUMMARY:Coming Out of My Skin: Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Baptiste Phou in conversation with Sokunthary Svay\n\n\nComing Out of My Skin: Jean-Baptiste Phou in conversation with Sokunthary Svay \nIn this searing memoir\, Phou faces his fears and shame to examine the role his ethnic origin has played in the construction of his sexual identity and his romantic relationships in a predominantly white environment. Being gay in a largely straight world is difficult but being Asian within this sexual minority can be a doubly oppressive experience. Coming Out of My Skin deftly tackles this challenge and aspires for a reconciliation that can empower people of sexual and racial minorities to joyfully inhabit their bodies. \nJean-Baptiste Phou is writer and multidisciplinary artist born in Paris to Chinese-Cambodian parents. He wrote the play Cambodia\, Here I Am! and directed the short film My Mother’s Tongue (2022) that received the Public’s Choice award at the 29th Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema. He is also the author of Coming Out of My Skin (Seagull Books\, 2023) and 80 mots du Cambodge (L’Asiathèque\, 2024). His works explore issues of identity\, exile\, the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge genocide and minority experiences. He has made his home in Phnom Penh\, Cambodia since 2017. \nSokunthary Svay is a Cambodian writer and performer from the Bronx. A founding member of the Cambodian American Literary Arts Association (CALAA)\, she has received fellowships from the American Opera Project\, Poets House\, Willow Books\, and CUNY\, as well as commissions from Washington National Opera\, the Asian American Writers’ Workshop\, the Chautauqua Institution\, and ISSUE Project Room. She is a doctoral candidate in English at the CUNY Graduate Center and a Lecturer at CCNY in Harlem. Author of a poetry collection and three opera libretti\, her hybrid memoir\, Put it on Record: A Memoir-Archive\, is now available from Willow Books. \nThis is a free event but we highly encourage a donation of $10 to support the work of Bluestockings’ Collective. RSVP here and pre-order a copy of the book. Masks are required.

SUMMARY:The Role of Art & Cultural Organizing in Justice Movements
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore how art and cultural organizing play a crucial role in driving forward justice movements!\n\n\nThe Role of Art & Cultural Organizing in Justice Movements \nArts and cultural organizing have played central roles in our justice movements. For many artists and cultural workers art serves as a spark to ignite action\, counter erasure\, challenge invisibility and counter dominant narratives while shaping a future. Art offers a place for healing\, visioning and a space for radical imagination that is critical during times of great despair. During this webinar\, artists and cultural workers will be discussing the role of art and culture work for our social justice movements during a time of crisis/genocide. \nAbout the speakers: \nArshia Fatima Haq (born in Hyderabad\, India) works across film\, visual art\, performance\, and sound\, through counter-archives and speculative narratives\, and is currently exploring themes of indigenous and localized knowledge within the context of Sufism. Her projects have been presented nationally and internationally at museums\, galleries\, nightclubs\, and in the streets\, and have been featured at the Broad Museum\, LA; LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions); the Hammer Museum\, LA; Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Tucson; Station Museum of Contemporary Art\, Houston; Onassis Stegi\, Athens; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris; Pacific Film Archive\, Berkeley; Toronto International Film Festival; and NPR; among others. Haq is the founder of Discostan\, a collaborative club-based project\, radio show and record label drawing from the cultural production of South and West Asia and North Africa and their diasporas. She has produced radio programming for Dublab and KCRW and currently hosts and produces a monthly radio show on NTS. Haq received an MFA in Film and Video from California Institute of the Arts. \nRekoil Chafe Born in Vikhroli\, Rekoil Chafe is one of the “OG” Lyricist and Music Producers of Mumbai’s Hip-hop scene and has been making music for almost a decade now. Rapping in English\, Hindi & Marathi\, his music features lived experiences\, abstract and metaphorical concepts\, and assertion of his identity as an Ambedkarite Buddhist—often addressing issues that his community\, independent artists and freelancers face through bars\, schemes and satirical bits. An ex-core member of a Thane based organisation “The Hip-Hop Movement” (THHM)\, Rekoil contributed to the planning and organizing first of many Hip-Hop events in the blooming stage of the Indian Hip-Hop circuit. He has produced for several Indian Hip Hop Favourites including producing & engineering singles for MTV Hustle Fame Gravity\, Shah Rule from Gully Gang & Gully Boy Movie roster\, Farhan Khan\, Kidshot\, Kr$na and many more. \nSeema Hari is a non-binary engineer\, multihyphenate artist\, producer and activist focused on annihilating colorism\, casteism and queerphobia through their work. They co-produced the internationally acclaimed short film ‘Sheer Qorma’ with director Faraz Arif Ansari\, which has traveled to over 250 film festivals and won 76 awards – including awards at the prestigious BAFTA Qualifying FRAMELINE Film Festival (San Francisco)\, the Academy Award qualifying Out on Film (Atlanta). They also co-created and acted in ‘Closer’\, a musical short film made with musician Khanvict and director Anjali Nayar which won the ‘Prism Prize’ Audience award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. They have acted in various music videos for international acts like Young The Giant\, Sunny Jain\, Love Fame Tragedy\, Racquel Jones etc. and in the feature film Anxious which will be releasing soon.Seema also DJs focusing on blending south asian sounds and rhythms into music from around the world. They have played at festivals internationally and love bringing people together through the unifying power of music and dance. \nKey questions we will discuss: \nIn what ways do art and cultural work play a critical role in our social justice movement work? \nWhat are examples of ways art and culture work connects us to legacies of healing and liberation that preserve traditions that are invisiblized or lost? \nWhat ways do art and culture counter dominant narratives? \nIn what ways does art and culture work serve as a catalyst to action? \nWhat is the artists role in a time of genocide? \n \nNote: While this event is free to the general public\, we encourage those from caste privileged backgrounds to donate to our caste equity work.

SUMMARY:In Celebration of Emerging South Asian Short Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join AAWW for a celebration of short story collections by Aruni Kashyap and Puloma Ghosh\, in conversation with writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Aruni Kashyap’s short story collection The Way You Want to Be Loved and Puloma Ghosh’s short story collection Mouth! Aruni and Puloma will be joined by writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim\, who will moderate their conversation following their readings. \nAbout Mouth \nIn this debut collection\, Puloma Ghosh spins tales of creatures and gore to explore grief\, sexuality\, and bodily autonomy. Embracing the bizarre and absurd\, Mouth stretches reality to reach for truth. \n“Desiccation” follows a teen figure skater with necrophiliac fantasies who is convinced the other Indian girl at the rink is a vampire. When a woman returns to Kolkata in “The Fig Tree\,” she can’t tell if she is haunted by her dead mother or a shakchunni — or both. “Nip” bottles up the consuming and addictive nature of infatuation\, while “Natalya” is a hair-raising autopsy of an ex-lover. In “Persimmons\,” a girl comes to terms with her own community sacrifice. \nFull of fangs and talons\, Mouth lays bare the otherwise awkward and unmentionable with a singular sharpness. Through surreal and captivating prose\, Puloma Ghosh delves into otherworldly spaces to reimagine ordinary struggles of isolation\, longing\, and the aching desires of our flesh. \nAbout The Way You Want to Be Loved \nIn agile and frank prose\, The Way You Want to Be Loved tells the stories of queer\, displaced lives from India’s Northeast\, an underrepresented region in English fiction. Aruni Kashyap offers up a powerful critique of the malfunctioning democracies of India and the US\, deftly balancing devastation and tragedy with a darkly humorous tone that has readers questioning their laughter. \nAt its core\, The Way You Want to Be Loved explores what it means to love\, desire\, and long for life under the duress of everyday and state-sanctioned violence and discrimination. \n__ \nAruni Kashyap is the author of The Way You Want to be Loved (Gaudy Boy 2024)\, the novels The House With a Thousand Stories (Penguin 2013)\, and How to Date a Fanatic (Harper Via 2026) . Along with editing a collection of stories called How to Tell the Story of an Insurgency\, he translated two novels from Assamese to English\, published by Zubaan Books and Penguin Random House. Recipient of a Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship\, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, the Faculty Research Grants in the Humanities and Arts Program\, the Arts Lab Faculty Fellowship\, and the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing to the University of Edinburgh\, his poetry collection\, There is No Good Time for Bad News\, was nominated for the 58th Georgia Author of the Year Awards 2022\, a finalist for the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize\, and the Four Way Books Levis Award in Poetry. His translations have been nominated for the Armory Square Prize for South Asian Literature in Translation 2023 and VOW Book Awards 2024. His short stories\, poems\, and essays have appeared in Catapult\, Bitch Media\, The Boston Review\, Electric Literature\, The Oxford Anthology of Writings from Northeast\, The Kenyon Review\, The New York Times\, The Guardian UK\, and others. He also writes in Assamese and is the author of a novel called Noikhon Etia Duroit and three novellas. He is an Associate Professor of English & Creative Writing and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Georgia\, Athens. \nPuloma Ghosh is a fiction writer based in Chicago whose work has appeared in One Story\, CRAFT Literary\, Cutleaf\, and other publications. Mouth is her first book. \nNur Nasreen Ibrahim is a journalist\, television producer\, and writer from Lahore\, Pakistan. Her speculative fiction\, literary fiction\, and personal essays have been published by The Aleph Review\, Salmagundi\, and Barrelhouse and anthologized in collections from Harper Perennial\, Catapult\, Hachette India\, and Platypus Press. She is a senior editor with the South Asian Avant-Garde (SAAG) Anthology and a two-time finalist for The Salam Award for Imaginative Fiction. Nur is a recipient of the 2021-2023 Lighthouse Writers Workshop Book Project Teaching Fellowship and the AAWW Margins Fellowship. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority.
