SUMMARY:Unveiling The Findings: State of Chinese Americans Survey 2024

All the scoops for books in 2024 and beyond.\n\n\nThis virtual event is part of the 2024 Asian American Literature Festival celebrating ‘Cosmic Kinship.’\nFrom September 14-22\, this festival aims to make literature accessible to all through inclusive and hybrid events\, fostering a literary constellation that spans the globe.\n  \nJoin award-winning poet and Bamboo Ridge Press editor-in-chief Cathy Song for a virtual talk story and reading with four authors that have new and upcoming books. It’s a roster that showcases the diversity in Bamboo Ridge writers and a continuation of 45 years of making literary mischief. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear Wing Tek Lum’s newly released historical poetry that conjures Honolulu’s Chinatown circa 1900s and to preview Donald Carreira Ching’s short story collection rooted in family and place\, Scott Kikkawa’s fourth Hawaiʻi Noir novel\, and Tamara Wong-Morrison’s lyrical poems and mele. There’s a lot to look forward to and get excited about! \n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nDonald Carreira Ching\nwas born and raised in Kahaluʻu\, Oʻahu. His novel\, Between Sky and Sea: A Family’s Struggle\, was published by Bamboo Ridge Press. In 2018\, he received an Elliot Cades Award for Literature. He is currently working on his short story collection\, Blood Work and Other Stories. \n\n\nScott Kikkawa\nScott Kikkawa is the author of Kona Winds\, Red Dirt\, Char Siu and the upcoming Sporting Girl\, from Bamboo Ridge Press\, noir detective novels set in postwar Honolulu. But\, with the emerging Hawaiian renaissance and her family’s active involvement in protesting over-development on her home island of Kaua’i\, her often angry and bitter poems emerged and evolved. Her collection of poems and songs written over almost 50 years will be published by Bamboo Ridge Press in 2026. \n\n\nWing Tek Lum\nWing Tek Lum is a Honolulu businessman and poet. Bamboo Ridge Press has published two earlier collections of his poetry: Expounding the Doubtful Points (1987\, winner of the Association of Asian American Studies Book Award) and The Nanjing Massacre: Poems (2012\, winner of a Hawai’i Book Publishers Association Ka Palapala Po’okela Award). With Makoto Ōoka\, Joseph Stanton\, and Jean Yamasaki Toyama\, he participated in a collaborative work of linked verse\, which was published as What the Kite Thinks by Summer Session\, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1994. SUMMARY:In Celebration of The Lucky Ones
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of writer Zara Chowdhary’s memoir The Lucky Ones\, in conversation with Nur Nasreen Ibrahim!\n\n\nJoin AAWW in-person and online for a celebration of Zara Chowdhary’s memoir The Lucky Ones! Zara will be joined by journalist\, television producer\, and writer Nur Nasreen Ibrahim. \nIn 2002\, Zara Chowdhary is sixteen years old and living with her family in Ahmedabad\, one of India’s fastest-growing cities\, when a gruesome train fire claims the lives of sixty Hindu right-wing volunteers and upends the life of five million Muslims. Instead of taking her school exams that week\, Zara is put under a three-month siege\, with her family and thousands of others fearing for their lives as Hindu neighbors\, friends\, and members of civil society transform overnight into bloodthirsty mobs\, hunting and massacring their fellow citizens. The chief minister of the state at the time\, Narendra Modi\, will later be accused of fomenting the massacre\, and yet a decade later\, will rise to become India’s prime minister\, sending the “world’s largest democracy” hurtling toward cacophonous Hindu nationalism. \nThe Lucky Ones traces the past of a multigenerational Muslim family to India’s brave but bloody origins\, a segregated city’s ancient past\, and the lingering hurt causing bloodshed on the streets. Symphonic interludes offer glimpses into the precious\, ordinary lives of Muslims\, all locked together in a crumbling apartment building in the city’s old quarters\, with their ability to forgive and find laughter\, to offer grace even as the world outside\, and their place in it\, falls apart. \nThe Lucky Ones entwines lost histories across a subcontinent\, examines forgotten myths\, prods a family’s secrets\, and gazes unflinchingly back at a country rushing to move past the biggest pogrom in its modern history. It is a warning thrown to the world by a young survivor\, to democracies that fail to protect their vulnerable\, and to homes that won’t listen to their daughters. It is an ode to the rebellion of a young woman who insists she will belong to her land\, family\, and faith on her own terms. \n__ \nZara Chowdhary is a writer and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. She has an MFA in creative writing and environment from Iowa State University and a Master’s in writing for performance from the University of Leeds. She has previously written for documentary television\, advertising\, and film. She lives in Madison\, Wisconsin with her partner\, child\, and two cats. \nNur Nasreen Ibrahim is a journalist\, television producer\, and writer from Lahore\, Pakistan. Her speculative fiction\, literary fiction\, and personal essays have been published by The Aleph Review\, Salmagundi\, and Barrelhouse and anthologized in collections from Harper Perennial\, Catapult\, Hachette India\, and Platypus Press. She is a senior editor with the South Asian Avant-Garde (SAAG) Anthology and a two-time finalist for The Salam Award for Imaginative Fiction. Nur is a recipient of the 2021-2023 Lighthouse Writers Workshop Book Project Teaching Fellowship and the AAWW Margins Fellowship. \n__ \nCOMMUNITY CARE & ACCESSIBILITY \nAt AAWW\, the safety and comfort of our community is our top priority.
