SUMMARY:Reimagining the Asian American Immigrant Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Join novelist Sarah Wang\, author of the novel New Skin\, for a free one-day writing workshop on “Reimagining the Asian American Immigrant Narrative” on Saturday\, October 24th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET at the Chatham Square branch of the New York Public Library. \nComplimentary copies of Wang’s novel New Skin (Little\, Brown 2026) will be given to participants (1 per person) until books run out. \nHow can we develop narrative strategies when writing immigrant stories and characters\, particularly in regard to Asian Americans? This generative workshop will discuss approaches to crafting immigrant stories across fiction and nonfiction\, as well as how we can move past limiting tropes such as the model minority stereotype and achieving the American dream. \nWang’s novel New Skin\, which Maggie Nelson describes as “mirthfully and mercilessly abject\,” explores such approaches through writing characters who dare to dream beyond meritocracy and belonging\, offering a different perspective on the immigrant story. \nAttendees will participate in dialogue about their own histories\, experiences\, and identities during the workshop to foster collaboration and exchange ideas. \nNo writing experience necessary; all levels of participation are welcome. Bring a pen and paper or laptop to write with. \nThis workshop is open to all Asian American writers and is supported by White Rabbit Trust\, Kundiman\, Welcome to Chinatown\, and Yu & Me Books. Free beverages from Sanzo will be provided. Registration is limited to 60 participants. \nRegister here (RSVP required): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/free-writing-workshop-with-novelist-sarah-wang-author-of-new-skin-tickets-2002951210990

SUMMARY:Joyful Activism
DESCRIPTION:How can artists use their creative practice to respond to the moment\, build solidarity\, and support the communities they care about? \nJoin us for an interactive workshop exploring the intersection of art\, activism\, and community-building with multidisciplinary artist and activist Perry Yung\, co-founder of SLANT Performance Group. \nInspired by the legacy of New York City’s Basement Workshop and San Francisco’s Kearny Street Workshop\, this participatory session invites artists to reflect on how creative practice can foster connection\, resilience\, and positive change through building solidarity. \nThrough theater improvisation exercises\, creative collaboration\, and group reflection\, participants will investigate questions such as: \n\nWhy do I make art?\nWhere does my inspiration come from?\nWho is my work for?\nWhat impact can art have on the world around me?\n\nDrawing from decades of artistic and community-based practice\, Perry will share personal stories and examples of art that continues to resonate across generations – such as his spoken word piece Diary of a Paper Son\, which explores the legacy of the Chinese Exclusion Act\, as well as the enduring influence of Civil Rights leaders such as Corky Lee\, Grace Lee Boggs\, Yuri Kochiyama\, and Angela Davis. \nTogether\, participants will examine how art activism can serve as a catalyst for storytelling\, solidarity\, and social change – all in the spirit of fun and flow. In the words of Angela Davis\, “It’s a lifetime of work. Learn to enjoy it.” \nWhether you are an emerging artist beginning to define your voice or an established artist looking to deepen the impact of your work\, this workshop offers an opportunity to connect with fellow creatives\, generate new ideas\, and explore pathways for meaningful engagement. We only ask that you bring an open\, collaborative spirit\, and willingness to investigate your work and its place in society. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but RSVP is required. To help keep our programs free\, there is a suggested donation of $10. Capacity is limited to 15 people to help create an intimate\, supportive\, and participatory environment. There will be a waitlist. \nAbout Perry Yung (he/him)\nPerry Yung\, born in Oakland\, CA\, is an actor\, musician\, and activist whose artistry has shaped both stage and screen for over three decades. A longtime member of La MaMa’s Great Jones Repertory Group\, he co-founded the Asian American performance collective SLANT Performance Group\, known for subversive explorations of Asian American identity. His screen credits include HBO/Netflix’s Warrior\, Netflix’s The 3 Body Problem\, The Knick\, and John Wick 2. As an award-winning shakuhachi bamboo flute musician\, Perry has studied in Japan under the Japan-United States Friendship Commission and Asian Cultural Council artist fellowships. He performs live and records for film and television scores worldwide\, most recently on the score for all three seasons of the Warrior series. In 2024\, Perry made his festival debut as a film director at the Disorient Film Festival in Eugene\, OR\, with his short experimental music film “Stop Asian Hate Love One Another\,” which was nominated for best music video. Beyond his artistic work\, he is an advocate for justice\, delivering national keynote speeches against anti-Asian violence and for workplace equity. He was recognized with awards for his activism by the California Asian American Bar Associate and Asians Fighting Injustice in New York.

SUMMARY:OPEN LAB | Dancing Stillness and Silence with Yuki Kawahisa
DESCRIPTION:2026 AiR Yuki Kawahisa presents her second movement workshop that examines the beauty and narrative potential of stillness and silence. \n\n\n2026 AiR Yuki Kawahisa presents the second iteration of a participatory movement workshop that examines the beauty and narrative potential of stillness and silence. Incorporating elements of Noh Theater\, Butoh\, Noguchi Taiso\, Tai Chi\, movement improvisation and clowning\, Kawahisa will engage participants in inclusive communication around movement and disability\, challenging perceived limitations around “normal” movement in performance. \nParticipants with disabilities\, mobility-limitations\, and no prior dance experience are encouraged to register. \nBoth new and returning participants are welcome! \nCPR is a fully ADA-compliant and accessible venue with two single occupancy\, all gender restrooms and one wheelchair-accessible restroom. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nYuki Kawahisa\, a native of Japan\, based in New York for over two decades now\, is a proud immigrant who earned the US Permanent Residency status through her work achievement in the field of performing arts. As an actor\, performing artist\, theatre creator\, she has written/directed/choreographed her own theatrical work and has collaborated and devised pieces with others. Kawahisa works across disciplines with various artists\, companies in New York and internationally. \nEverything she creates is somewhat influenced by her Japanese origin\, the beauty and richness of the culture\, its esthetics\, language\, literature\, traditions (and the coquettish\, Kawaii culture also). Training background include: Noh (Kita style\, Tokyo)\, Clowning (Sue Morrison)\, Balinese/Mask dance (Bali\, Indonesia)\, Noguchi Taiso (Mari Osanai) and Butoh with numerous Japanese masters. \nShe often creates peculiar\, darkly humorous and absurdly comical movement pieces with texts. She sees great beauty in stillness and silence. She dances still and tells stories with silence. And those are her uniqueness and strength\, her signature style. Her work is a reflection of herself\, closely intertwined to her identity as a minority/immigrant/woman living abroad. She creates to give herself a voice and the strength to voice it and be heard. \nOPEN LAB is a series that encompasses theoretical and practical discussions\, movement research\, and workshops open to the public that invite practice-based inquiry and creative exchange of ideas.
