DESCRIPTION:Since 2020\, AAPF’s summer schools have served as foundational platforms for learning about the forbidden histories and knowledge that make collective advocacy and activation possible. \nOver the course of five Wednesdays starting May 27th\, and together with our partners the Freedom to Learn Network and Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies at Columbia Law School\, Backtalkers Academy through homerooms\, plenaries\, intensives and office hours\, will engage in interactive conversations on Critical Race Theory\, historical memory\, feminism\, democracy\, and education. Featuring some of the most distinguished racial justice and democracy experts including Carol Anderson\, Barbara Arnwine\, Kimberlé Crenshaw\, Ibram X. Kendi\, Nancy MacLean\, Jason Stanley\, and Kaye Wise Whitehead\, and many more\, this is a space to sharpen your analysis of the democratic crisis we are living through and forge the tools needed to fight back. \nWe will be running a special 10% early bird discount to the first 100 people who register by April 10th. Just use EarlyBird10 at checkout. \nIn addition\, limited 50% scholarships are available  for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.

Together\, trace the transformation of the area from its origins as the Native American Lenape village of Werpoes Hill to the vibrant Chinatown it is today. Highlighted sites include the oldest streets in Chinatown\, a bustling neighborhood park and a Catholic church with layered histories\, Chinatown’s oldest general store\, and a Chinese eatery that catered to the needs of Chinatown’s turn-of-the-century “bachelor society.” \nWalking tours leave promptly from the main lobby at 215 Centre Street\, NY\, NY 10013. They are best for children ages 12 and up. SUMMARY:The Original: A Chinese Bohemian in the Village\, Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:H T Tsiang with actress Joanna Moore in a 1960s TV program \nThe Original is an immersive walking tour through Greenwich Village with Michael Salgarolo following the strange\, hilarious life of Chinese American author H T Tsiang. Alternatively ignored and ridiculed in his own time\, Tsiang is now known as a visionary forebearer of modern Asian American literature. His two major novels\, The Hanging on Union Square (1935) and And China Has Hands (1937) challenged mainstream representations of Chinese Americans and presented a deeply unhinged satire of the American Dream. The Original explores how the cafeterias\, hand laundries\, and radical arts scene of the Depression-era West Village inspired Tsiang’s writing and made him an “original.”

SUMMARY:Chinatown '75 Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tours on May 11\, 17\, and 18\, 2025 from 11:00am to 12:30pm \nCHINATOWN ‘75 is an interactive walking tour that tells the story of the police brutality case that rocked Chinatown and the protest movement that arose in its wake. In May of 1975\, 25\,000 protesters marched from Chinatown to City Hall to demand justice for the beating of Peter Yew. CHINATOWN ‘75 traces the route of the original march in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. \nBased on archival research and oral histories with march participants\, CHINATOWN ‘75 uses the Peter Yew protests to paint an in-depth portrait of a transformative moment in Chinatown’s history. We’ll explore how the interactions between radical social movements\, community organizations\, and the NYPD shaped the ensuing demonstrations\, and how the iconic photographs of the march came to symbolize a generation of Asian American activism. \nTours will be led by Dr. Michael Menor Salgarolo\, a New York City-based historian\, walking tour guide\, retired stand-up comedian\, and founder of UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours. He holds a PhD in History from New York University\, where he teaches courses in Asian/Pacific/American Studies in the Department of Social & Cultural Analysis. \nThis walk is presented by UNASSIMILATED Walking Tours and Think!Chinatown\, as part of the 2025 Chinatown Storytelling Festival. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to Think!Chinatown.
