SUMMARY:Staged Reading of The Butterfly Agreement
DESCRIPTION:About the Play \nThis play is a contemporary reimagining of the classic Chinese folk romance The Butterfly Lovers. In a world where marriage comes with a price tag\, self-branding has become a means of survival\, and ideals are quietly shaped by capital\, the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai takes root again in Shanghai and New York in 2026. \nTo escape a marriage arranged by the Ma family\, Zhu Yingtai assumes a false identity and leaves for the United States\, where she meets Liang Shanbo\, a struggling scholar kicked out of his lab and now working as an Uber driver. Both hiding behind carefully constructed personas and both measured by the world around them\, they enter into a marriage under “The Butterfly Agreement\,” trading a green card for research funding\, only to discover a feeling that cannot be calculated or measured. \nHow do we find an inner sanctuary that cannot be bought\, sold\, or measured in a digital age where identities\, feelings\, and ideals are all quantified? \nAdmission & Reservation Details \nAdmission: Free & open to the public. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. \nSeating: First-come\, first-served based on advance registration. Walk-ins are welcome\, subject to seat availability on the evening of the performance. \nEntry Requirements: Please be prepared to present a valid state-issued ID / Photo ID at campus security upon entry. \nArrival: Please plan to arrive 10–15 minutes prior to the start of the reading (7:00 PM).

SUMMARY:Sydney Yu's Autobiographical Show THE LAST LEAF Premieres
DESCRIPTION:“What does love mean to you? How do you express it? Can you move forward while still longing to stay within the memories?” \nThe Last Leaf is Sydney Yu’s autobiographical story\, premiering at the Tank’s LimeFest on Sunday\, August 23rd\, 9:30 pm\, 2026. It begins with her grandfather’s illness that brings her to reflect on the family she left behind. Born in Sydney\, raised in Beijing\, and now living in the US\, Sydney often thinks about how she ended up here. It begins in a dreamlike world of childhood\, fantastical love\, and memories from long\, long ago. Then reality breaks through\, and what’s left is the truth she never quite said out loud. \nThe show is an hour long with no intermission. It centers around physical theater\, pantomiming\, and monologues. The creative team includes Elie Berman as Stage Manager\, Siyin Yan as Scenic Designer\, and Ethan Ordower as Lighting Designer. The production was originally developed as Sydney’s senior thesis performance at Trinity College in Spring 2025. \nThis story is for anyone who has loved someone implicitly\, grieved someone quietly\, or wondered what home and love actually mean. This piece is dedicated to her grandfather and to her family. \nTickets to The Last Leaf are currently on sale by visiting https://thetanknyc.org/calendar-1/thelastleaf.

SUMMARY:This Memory doesn't Taste like a Birthday Cake
DESCRIPTION:“What does memory taste like?” Having never celebrated a birthday\, L is throwing her dream 28th—and you’re all invited\, woohoo! \nEmerging theater artist Andi Cui is premiering her new solo play\, “This Memory Doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” at Theater for the New City on Aug. 23-25\, as part of the Dream Up Theater Fest. \n“This Memory doesn’t Taste like a Birthday Cake” is a solo play inspired by real-life stories of children with incarcerated parents in China. The play digs a rabbit hole through L’s simple action of cooking favorite childhood dishes\, bringing back fragmented memories with almost neurotic details of texture\, taste\, and smell to the present stage. 2 dishes and a long awaited cake for an imagined birthday\, L unfolds her past in an intimate exploration of the childhood wounds that she once was unable to articulate. \nWritten and Directed by Andi Cui and starring Athena Yin\, this play expands beyond parental incarceration to explore the unspoken ways how love\, loss\, guilt and hope wrestel in Asian families\, and how can one make peace with a childhood fraught with regret and unresolved feelings. It stands as a vital\, deeply personal response to global crises of youth mental health and familial trauma. \nTICKETS\nTickets to “This Memory” is currently on sale by visiting: https://ci.ovationtix.com/35441/production/1283647\nGeneral Admission $15 \nAndi Cui is a New York based theater maker that writes\, directs\, performs and dramaturgs. Her practice centers on solo or small-cast works\, utilizing episodic narrative and rabbit hole structures to foreground the usually unnarratable subtlety\, dream-like absurdity\, and emotional residue of everyday experience.

SUMMARY:Action开拍--Bilingual Documentary Theater at The Tank
DESCRIPTION:Emerging theatre artist Yuchen Ye will premiere her newest original work\, “ACTION\,” on Saturday\, August 22\, 2026\, at 7pm at The Tank (312 W. 36th Street\, New York). Presented as part of LimeFest\, the bilingual documentary performance draws from family archives\, historical research\, and live storytelling to examine the intersections of war\, migration\, family\, and art. \n“When I was eighteen\, I discovered that my great-grandfather directed twenty-one films in 1930s China. Why did nobody ever tell me? Where can I find his films? What did he believe in as an artist? Now I step onstage\, searching through fragments for answers—in a world still falling apart.” \nPart investigation\, part performance\, “ACTION” follows Yuchen’s search to reconstruct the interrupted life of her great-grandfather\, a filmmaker whose artistic career was profoundly shaped by war and displacement. Blending live performance\, archival materials\, documentary footage\, audience interaction\, and bilingual storytelling\, the piece asks what it means to keep making art during war and migration. \nCreated and performed by Yuchen Ye\, the production is developed in collaboration with Gideon Lazarus\, Sheridan Merrick\, Alec Welhouse\, and Jieru Wang. “ACTION” connects one artist’s search to urgent questions facing our present moment: How do wars erase cultural memory? What does it mean to continue making art during political uncertainty and migration? Can performance become an act of historical repair? \nTickets to “ACTION” are currently on sale by visiting https://thetanknyc.org/calendar-1/action. \nYuchen Ye (she/her) is a Chinese-born\, New York–based interdisciplinary theatre-maker. Her theatre practice is rooted in real historical events and Chinese cultural memory\, integrating oral histories\, documentary materials\, and archival research to bring unheard stories from history to the stage. Through this practice\, she seeks to transform individual voices into a collective force for reflection and change. She is a recipient of the Contemporary Performance Award from Big Art Group and an alumna of Directors Lab North(Toronto\, Canada). Her work has been presented across China\, the U.K.\, and the U.S. MFA\, Sarah Lawrence College; BA\, Shanghai Theatre Academy.

SUMMARY:Performance – The Table
DESCRIPTION:The Table is a new work of performance that explores insatiability\, grief\, and the body within larger systems. Through immersive\, visceral meditations and a fever dream-like performance language—combining movement\, puppetry\, and everyday objects—the work opens liminal\, shifting worlds where anything can become a portal. Rooted in Pink Fang’s legacy of socially engaged\, interdisciplinary performance\, the work centers collective experience\, relational exchange\, and the body as a site of inquiry. Both poetic and unsettling\, it examines the forces that drive desire and dissatisfaction\, asking a central question: What is enough?

SUMMARY:Theater: Dragoness and Art Exhibit: Misalignment
DESCRIPTION:A high-octane\, satirical commentary on race and creating art under capitalism\, Dragoness interrogates the ethics of reinventing identity in order to satisfy the expectations of those in power. \nWritten by Thai-American playwright Cha Mangan and directed by Samantha Toy Ozeas. Starring Vi To\, Bridget Gao\, Balfour Clark\, and Aaron Applebey. Produced by Tin Can Contingency. To learn more about the project and artists involved: https://givebutter.com/dragoness \nPerformances run May 28th-June 7th\, Thursdays-Sundays\, 7pm at Inspiration Point. Tickets are $15. \nPerformances of Dragoness will be accompanied by a visual art exhibition entitled Misalignment. Misalignment invites artists to respond to paradoxes\, splits\, and contradictions. They are interested in identity as paradox\, in life as contradiction\, and in practices that honor the multitudes within and the multiple realities that serve us both for expression and for protection. Work featured confronts internalized oppression\, betrayal—of language\, land\, lineage—and the uneasy desire to pass\, belong\, or ascend.

DESCRIPTION:Access $25 tickets Use Disount Code: JAANY for May 17 at 7pn show. \nIndian Princesses\nby Eliana Theologides Rodriguez\ndirected by Miranda Cornell \nn the summer of 2008\, five young girls of color and their white fathers attend a program designed to bond families through handmade activities\, camp-like adventures\, and a heavy dose of cultural appropriation. But where can these girls turn when the program sparks questions that their fathers are unable – or unwilling – to answer? Inspired by the playwright’s experiences in a father-daughter program of the same name\, Indian Princesses is a tender satire that explores the stories we tell\, the histories we omit\, and the truths that live inside us\, waiting to come out.

SUMMARY:Theater: Four Seas Players: The So-Called Perfect Life
DESCRIPTION:In their pursuit of a perfect life and a perfect marriage\, a couple enrolls in a revolutionary AI system called Perfect Life\, a device that promises certainty\, compatibility\, and lasting love. \nBut instead of fixing their relationship\, the system begins to excavate it—dragging buried memories\, unresolved conflicts\, and unlearned lessons back to the surface. As the AI rewinds\, analyzes\, and reconstructs their past\, the couple is forced to confront a difficult truth: perfection cannot move them forward until they understand what they’ve been avoiding. \nA darkly humorous and emotionally piercing exploration of love\, choice\, and accountability\, The So-Called Perfect Life asks whether intimacy can ever be optimized—and whether a future together is possible without first facing the mess of being human. \nPlaywright: Patrick Lee \nCo-Directors: Patrick Lee & Wing Lo \nTicket Prices: Early Bird $21.80\, Seniors $13.48 \n  \nAbout The Four Seas Players\nTHE FOUR SEAS PLAYERS was founded by Dr. Joanna Chan\, Ms. Sun Fu Lo\, Dr. Leo Yam\, and Mr. Chung Lo in October 1970 in New York City’s Chinatown\, as a community outreach program for young people and recent immigrants. Its purpose is to promote a spirit of harmony and cooperation through artistic involvement and to nurture an interest in and appreciation for the dramatic arts\, especially in the tradition of Chinese culture and its relationship with the Western art form as seen in New York. The name “Four Seas” represents the first two Chinese characters in the ancient saying: “Within the four seas\, all men are brothers.”
