Case 84 is a show for anyone who has struggled with identity or just feels like people misunderstand where they come from. It is an immersive journey through Edward’s experience growing up in Philadelphia as a transracial adoptee and touches on the influence of American media on identity\, complex family dynamics\, and ultimately what it means to be an American. There are silly\, introspective\, and also painful moments in the show. As Edward’s journey unfolds\, viewers have the opportunity to learn alongside him\, gaining insights into the challenges faced by adoptees and the power of self-discovery. This show is a love letter to adoptees and an invitation for all to learn more about us. \nAbout Edward: \nEdward is a two-time Emmy nominated Senior Writer/Producer for Cable Entertainment Brand Creative at NBCUniversal. He is also a Co-Founder of The Asian Comedy Fest. The largest\, longest running Asian led comedy fest in the country. \nAbout Kathleen Kim: \nKathleen is a NYC based producer\, puppeteer and voice artist best known for her work on Sesame Street as Ji-Young\, the show’s first Asian American Muppet character who debuted in the Emmy nominated AAPI special “See Us Coming Together.” Some of her other performance credits include Awkwafina’s Nora From Queens\, Saturday Night Live\, The Today Show and Helpsters on Apple TV+. \n

Intimacy is about connection—being seen\, understood\, and celebrated for who we truly are. It often lies in navigating complex dynamics\, rediscovering love\, or creating unspoken bonds of support. \nMOCA Queer StoryJAM returns with another heartfelt gathering! This storytelling program aims to foster understanding and build bridges across diverse communities by highlighting the voices of queer Asian Americans. This time\, we are eager to hear stories about INTIMACY—whether centered on romantic relationships\, friendships\, or family connections—from our community. \nFive LGBTQIA+ Asian American storytellers from different backgrounds will share their personal narratives on intimacy and the ways it shapes their lives. Following their presentations\, the floor will be open for program guests to share their own stories. We look forward to hearing your story! \n  \nSTORYTELLERS\nMichael Ngo (He/Him)\nMichael is one of the founders of Voyage Theater Company and has served as producer for all of VTC’s readings and mainstage productions\, including their most recent project SAY GAY PLAYS at NYU Skirball Center. Michael was a producing partner for the Off-Broadway hit THE BIG GAY JAMBOREE at the Orpheum Theater in 2024. This season Michael extends his producing credits to Broadway for the world premiere of GOODNIGHT AND GOOD LUCK starring George Clooney. A proud Chinese-American\, Michael emigrated to the United States with his family from Vietnam in 1974. His experience as an immigrant has fueled his passion for storytelling. Michael continues to look for opportunities to support immigrant and first-generation artists in sharing their unique journeys. \nYasmina Yuexi\nYasmina Yuexi\, born in Beijing\, China\, began her artistic journey at the age of four with piano and classical music training. She joined the Jinfan Choir in middle school\, performing alto and piano at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA). In 2009\, Yasmina discovered Flamenco\, studying in Madrid\, Sevilla\, New York\, and Beijing. Expanding her dance repertoire since 2018\, she incorporates Ballet\, Classical Chinese Dance\, Jazz\, Krump\, Tap\, Contemporary\, and Hip-Hop. Her cross-cultural works\, such as “Pregón de Candied Haws por Flamenco” and “Flamenco por Spring Festival Overture\,” explore cultural intersections. Winning first prize at Flamenco Certamen USA in 2023\, she performed at prestigious venues across the US. In 2024\, Yasmina collaborated with Blackbird Dance Company on “The Message\,” reflecting on climate change. Yasmina continues to explore dance as a medium for bridging cultures and storytelling\, aiming to inspire audiences through innovative performances. \nAlbert Hsueh\nAlbert Hsueh is a Taiwanese musical theatre performer and educator. He is the first Taiwanese actor to appear in a U.S. production of Chicago and has an extensive performance career spanning the United States\, Taiwan\, Norway\, and China. \nHis U.S. credits include Pacific Overtures\, The King and I\, Gypsy\, Grease\, Anything Goes\, and more. He has collaborated with Broadway and West End creatives and worked with award-winning production teams recognized by the Tony Awards\, Drama Desk\, and Obie Awards. \nBeyond performing\, Albert is the founder of the Taiwanese Artists Big Apple Club\, a platform supporting and connecting Taiwanese artists abroad.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this engaging event where four LGBTQIA+ Asian American storytellers will share their stories about family.\n\n\nWhat is family? How do you navigate family relationships? What is your chosen family like? MOCA Queer StoryJAM returns after its Pride session with another heartfelt gathering. This storytelling program aims to foster understanding and build bridges across diverse communities by highlighting the voices of queer Asian Americans. This time\, we are eager to hear stories about family\, whether it be biological or chosen\, from our community. Five LGBTQIA+ Asian American storytellers from different backgrounds will share their personal narratives surrounding family. Following their presentations\, we will open the floor for program guests to share their own stories. We look forward to your participation in a night of meaningful storytelling.

SUMMARY:Localized History Workshop Series – The Missing Stories: South Asian American History from the 18th Century to Today
DESCRIPTION:South Asian Americans have been a presence in the United States for more than 250 years. Early immigrants from South Asia worked on farms and factories\, helped build railroads\, fought for India’s freedom from British rule\, and struggled for equal rights in the United States. Today\, more than 6.1 million individuals in the U.S. trace their heritage to South Asia\, the fastest growing immigrant group in the country. South Asian American stories are an integral part of the American story\, yet little information is available to the public about these stories. \nIn “The Missing Stories\,” SAADA’s Executive Director Samip Mallick will cover how communities come to be excluded from the archival record and how we can address these absences. Samip will introduce South Asian American history (1800s to present) and will also discuss how community-based archives can become sites for liberatory memory work by introducing the audience to SAADA’s archival collections\, programs\, and participatory storytelling projects.

DESCRIPTION:Following April’s successful performance of Comfort Girl\, Stephanie brings her band back to Joe’s Pub for a performance of entirely different material! Stephanie Chou is a composer/saxophonist/singer who blends influences from her Chinese heritage with Western jazz and pop to create a bracingly original sound. Tonight’s show will feature live premieres of newly-written material and fan favorites from her eclectic and wide-ranging body of work. \nChinatown Dreams is a songwriting album following the journey of a young\, second-generation Chinese-American woman\, as she and her Chinatown community go through a year of tremendous challenges. This semi-autobiographical story examines the conflict between choosing the safe\, expected path vs. following one’s heart\, a conflict so many second-generation Americans of all sorts face. Chinatown Dreams will be a concept album written for her band\, with lyrics in English and Mandarin. The music combines the energy of improvised jazz with the precision of progressive rock\, in an homage to Manhattan’s Chinatown.

DESCRIPTION:Come share your favorite memories and experiences of preserving and celebrating Chinatown’s rich cultural heritage with us!\n\n\nShare Your Chinatown Placekeeping Story \nWe invite you to participate in reclaiming and reasserting our own narratives  through telling our own stories of resilience and resistance in Chinatown. In the face of rapid displacement of working class immigrant tenants and the ongoing construction of the tallest jail in the world\, we know that Chinatown has always been a site of resistance and resilience. \nAt this story gathering event we’ll be capturing people’s audio stories about Chinatown. Bring stories about your favorite places\, people\, sights and sounds of Chinatown – past and present. Share your hopes for a justice-oriented future for Chinatown. Excerpts of these recorded stories will be shared at a late September public event. Some may also be included in a mobile audio walking tour that will be launched at the end of September. \nThe workshop will be led by media artist Megan Hattie Stahl and Chinatown Art Brigade co-founder Betty Yu. \nAbout Borough Based Liberation Project  \nspace provided by Immigrant Social Services’ Storefront for Ideas \nThe Borough Based Liberation Project is a series of neighborhood cultural events and interventions to collectively vision abolition\, climate justice\, migrant justice\, and housing futures in New York City. For the month of September\, our project will activate this storefront to serve as a centralized hub for our organizing. As our communities converge\, learn\, and share together\, we will co-create an intersectional space that connects our local and global struggles to build solidarity and power. The project’s “Abolitionist Futures” theme will spotlight local resistance and link struggles for liberation from NYC to Palestine through art workshops\, exhibitions\, teach-ins\, gatherings\, performances\, and celebrations. \n
