DESCRIPTION:Join Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) and a panel of multi-disciplinary Asian American storytellers for a vital discussion about identity and belonging for artists with mixed-race backgrounds. \nPanelists will explore how navigating their mixed identities has shaped the ways they tell stories across disciplines including composition\, comedy\, and visual art. Through personal experience and creative practice\, the conversation will examine how their lived experience informs their artistic voice\, challenges singular narratives of identity\, and opens space for more expansive\, nuanced representations within and beyond the AAPI community. \nPanelists include Hannah Ishizaki\, composer and sound artist; Adam Mamawala\, comedian; and Michaela Ternasky-Holland\, XR/VR director. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Alex Chester-Iwata\, award-winning performer\, writer\, and cultural advocate\, in collaboration with Mixed Asian Media\, where Alex is Founder and CEO. \nMixed Asian Media (MAM) is a collective created by multiracial\, mixed Asian/Pacific Islanders (APIs). We seek to build community through conversations of what it means to be of mixed Asian/Pacific Islander descent and help establish our ever-evolving place in society. A former child actor and member of Diddy’s girl group Dream\, she has appeared on Broadway and across major networks\, including ABC\, NBC\, Forbes\, and PBS. As a mixed-race Japanese and Jewish American\, Alex has channeled her lived experience into founding Mixed Asian Media\, a platform dedicated to uplifting mixed AAPINH voices. The organization has been recognized by Nielsen and cited in academic texts for its cultural impact. She is also the founder of Mixed Asian Day™\, a national movement celebrating mixed Asian identity and community. Alex has spoken at events hosted by Asian Hustle Network\, Gold House\, TikTok\, Amazon\, and the Tribeca Festival\, among others\, and serves on multiple national boards\, including ACE NextGen\, the American Advertising Federation–LA\, the New York Asian Film Festival\, the Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation\, and The Lunar Collective. In 2025\, she was honored with the National Association of Asian American Professionals’ Inspire Award for her leadership and advocacy. \nHannah Ishizaki is a composer and sound artist based in Princeton. Described as “Imaginative…effective and moving” by the New York Times\, her music seeks to foster connections between musicians and the audience through the explorations of the physicality of music performance. Ishizaki is the current Composer-in-Residence with Young Concert Artists. Ishizaki’s compositions have been performed by renowned musicians and ensembles across the world such as Midori Goto\, Ensemble Intercontemporain\, Sō Percussion\, the Attacca Quartet\, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Ishizaki was named a 2023 Hildegard commission winner by National Sawdust\, supported by The Onassis Foundation and the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Ishizaki is a PhD candidate in Music Composition and a recipient of the Mark Nelson Fellowship at Princeton University. She studied with Andrew Norman for composition and Areta Zhulla and Ronald Copes for violin at the Juilliard School\, where she was the first composer to receive a Kovner Fellowship. \nAdam Mamawala is a nationally touring stand-up comedian based out of New York City. He has appeared on Comedy Central\, MTV\, BET\, Amazon Prime\, and SiriusXM\, and both of his comedy albums\, Statistically More Relatable (2022) and One of the Good Ones (2017) debuted at #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts. Since 2024\, Adam has toured as Dane Cook’s feature act\, performing at iconic venues including The Fillmore in Detroit\, The Met in Philadelphia\, and NYC’s Beacon Theatre. In 2025\, he featured for Jon Stewart at the prestigious Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown\, NY\, and was selected as one of Forbes’ 12 Rising AAPI Stand-Up Comedians To Watch. \nMichaela A.Ternasky-Holland is a Peabody-nominated and Emmy award-winning director who specializes in creating impactful stories using immersive and interactive technology. She is one of the first directors to create and premiere a short film utilizing Open AI’s SORA platform\, which screened at Tribeca Festival. Her first original animated series garnered over 2.2 million views on YouTube within a month of release. More of her prolific work in animation has been recognized as Best Directing in XR by The Collision Awards\, VR Film of Year Finalist by the International VR Awards\, and Grand Prize Winner at The Philippine Animation Festival. As a nominee for the Producers Guild of America’s Innovation Award\, she is also a consultant\, speaker\, and thought leader who has been recognized as one of the 100 Original Voices of XR and listed as one of Blooloop’s 50 Immersive Influencers.

Early bird tickets available until until January 19\, 7:00pm. \nStories by:\nDenise Cai\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai\, which is ironic since her last science class was high school biology. Her two biggest regrets are not trying out for the cheerleading team and not starting antidepressants sooner. Both helped shape her path toward understanding how our past experiences guide who we become. She studies how the brain organizes and integrates experiences so memories can inform future choices\, and how this process changes with trauma or aging. Denise co-developed open source Miniscopes\, (tiny head-mounted microscopes) that let researchers watch neurons interact in real time. Using these tools\, her lab has shown that memory systems are not tidy photo albums. They are more like chaotic group chats that constantly link\, relink\, and reshape our identities. Denise is passionate about fostering curiosity\, creativity\, and community. She believes that real scientific breakthroughs arise when diverse perspectives are welcomed and empowered. She still suspects she would have made a great cheerleader. \nDr Zakia Ghafari is an author\, consultant\, and captivating storyteller. An immigrant from Afghanistan\, she weaves powerful narratives of resilience\, womanhood\, and reinvention. Blending science and soul\, she inspires audiences to embrace change\, celebrate strength\, and transform life’s challenges into fuel for a vibrant\, empowered future. \nClare McCormack\, PhD\, is an assistant professor in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her research focuses on women’s mental health in pregnancy and the peripartum\, and challenges the “mommy brain” construct. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding interactions between brain\, biology\, and the environment in shaping adaptation to parenthood. Her recent work is among the first to use brain MRI during pregnancy to examine neuroplasticity at the transition to parenthood and its implications for maternal and infant health. \nDr. Kibby McMahon is a licensed clinical psychologist\, researcher\, and digital health entrepreneur who’s obsessed with the emotional complexities of relationships. She earned her BA from Columbia University and her PhD in clinical psychology from Duke University\, where her NIMH-funded research focused on how regulating our own emotions helps us connect more deeply with others. She has held research and clinical roles at Duke University Medical Center\, Columbia University\, Weill Cornell Hospital\, and the Max Planck Institute. Dr. Kibby is a family caregiver and breast cancer survivor- experiences that reshaped how she understands vulnerability\, resilience\, and what it means to care for others while holding yourself together. These threads came together when she co-founded KulaMind\, a digital mental health company that supports loved ones of people with mental illness through evidence-based skills\, coaching\, and AI-powered tools. She also hosts the podcast “A Little Help for Our Friends\,” which explores the invisible emotional labor of loving someone who is struggling with mental health or addiction. She lives in New York with her tornado of a son\, a fluff of a dog\, and a partner-in-crime husband. \nAnnie Tan is an educator\, activist\, writer and storyteller from Manhattan’s Chinatown. Annie’s work has been featured in Huffington Post\, New Republic\, PBS’ Asian Americans\, RISK! and twice on The Moth Radio Hour on NPR. As Edward’s journey unfolds\, viewers have the opportunity to learn alongside him\, gaining insights into the challenges faced by adoptees and the power of self-discovery. Michael was a producing partner for the Off-Broadway hit THE BIG GAY JAMBOREE at the Orpheum Theater in 2024. A proud Chinese-American\, Michael emigrated to the United States with his family from Vietnam in 1974. His experience as an immigrant has fueled his passion for storytelling. Michael continues to look for opportunities to support immigrant and first-generation artists in sharing their unique journeys. \nYasmina Yuexi\nYasmina Yuexi\, born in Beijing\, China\, began her artistic journey at the age of four with piano and classical music training. She joined the Jinfan Choir in middle school\, performing alto and piano at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA). In 2009\, Yasmina discovered Flamenco\, studying in Madrid\, Sevilla\, New York\, and Beijing. Expanding her dance repertoire since 2018\, she incorporates Ballet\, Classical Chinese Dance\, Jazz\, Krump\, Tap\, Contemporary\, and Hip-Hop. Winning first prize at Flamenco Certamen USA in 2023\, she performed at prestigious venues across the US. In 2024\, Yasmina collaborated with Blackbird Dance Company on “The Message\,” reflecting on climate change. Yasmina continues to explore dance as a medium for bridging cultures and storytelling\, aiming to inspire audiences through innovative performances. \nAlbert Hsueh\nAlbert Hsueh is a Taiwanese musical theatre performer and educator. He is the first Taiwanese actor to appear in a U.S. production of Chicago and has an extensive performance career spanning the United States\, Taiwan\, Norway\, and China. \nHis U.S. credits include Pacific Overtures\, The King and I\, Gypsy\, Grease\, Anything Goes\, and more. He has collaborated with Broadway and West End creatives and worked with award-winning production teams recognized by the Tony Awards\, Drama Desk\, and Obie Awards. \nBeyond performing\, Albert is the founder of the Taiwanese Artists Big Apple Club\, a platform supporting and connecting Taiwanese artists abroad.

SUMMARY:Localized History Workshop Series – The Missing Stories: South Asian American History from the 18th Century to Today
DESCRIPTION:South Asian Americans have been a presence in the United States for more than 250 years. Early immigrants from South Asia worked on farms and factories\, helped build railroads\, fought for India’s freedom from British rule\, and struggled for equal rights in the United States. Today\, more than 6.1 million individuals in the U.S. trace their heritage to South Asia\, the fastest growing immigrant group in the country. South Asian American stories are an integral part of the American story\, yet little information is available to the public about these stories. \nIn “The Missing Stories\,” SAADA’s Executive Director Samip Mallick will cover how communities come to be excluded from the archival record and how we can address these absences. Samip will introduce South Asian American history (1800s to present) and will also discuss how community-based archives can become sites for liberatory memory work by introducing the audience to SAADA’s archival collections\, programs\, and participatory storytelling projects.

DESCRIPTION:Following April’s successful performance of Comfort Girl\, Stephanie brings her band back to Joe’s Pub for a performance of entirely different material! Stephanie Chou is a composer/saxophonist/singer who blends influences from her Chinese heritage with Western jazz and pop to create a bracingly original sound. Tonight’s show will feature live premieres of newly-written material and fan favorites from her eclectic and wide-ranging body of work. \nChinatown Dreams is a songwriting album following the journey of a young\, second-generation Chinese-American woman\, as she and her Chinatown community go through a year of tremendous challenges. This semi-autobiographical story examines the conflict between choosing the safe\, expected path vs. following one’s heart\, a conflict so many second-generation Americans of all sorts face. Chinatown Dreams will be a concept album written for her band\, with lyrics in English and Mandarin. The music combines the energy of improvised jazz with the precision of progressive rock\, in an homage to Manhattan’s Chinatown.

In the face of rapid displacement of working class immigrant tenants and the ongoing construction of the tallest jail in the world\, we know that Chinatown has always been a site of resistance and resilience. \nAt this story gathering event we’ll be capturing people’s audio stories about Chinatown. Bring stories about your favorite places\, people\, sights and sounds of Chinatown – past and present. Share your hopes for a justice-oriented future for Chinatown. Excerpts of these recorded stories will be shared at a late September public event. Some may also be included in a mobile audio walking tour that will be launched at the end of September. \nThe workshop will be led by media artist Megan Hattie Stahl and Chinatown Art Brigade co-founder Betty Yu. \nAbout Borough Based Liberation Project  \nspace provided by Immigrant Social Services’ Storefront for Ideas \nThe Borough Based Liberation Project is a series of neighborhood cultural events and interventions to collectively vision abolition\, climate justice\, migrant justice\, and housing futures in New York City. For the month of September\, our project will activate this storefront to serve as a centralized hub for our organizing. As our communities converge\, learn\, and share together\, we will co-create an intersectional space that connects our local and global struggles to build solidarity and power. The project’s “Abolitionist Futures” theme will spotlight local resistance and link struggles for liberation from NYC to Palestine through art workshops\, exhibitions\, teach-ins\, gatherings\, performances\, and celebrations. \n
